The only place where people care about what the Church thinks and sees should be the Vatican. Countries have laws, and each time the church decided to not abide to these laws, it ended up badly for her.

Perhaps, but then the Roman Church has also been criticised for capitulating to Nazi Germany and Facist Italy. So most people obviously expect them to make some independant moral judgements outside the law.

I think it was a little more complicated and rather sadder than that. The Nazi's were actually losing votes when Hitler became Chancellor - their popular vote had fallen and perhaps the tide was beginning to turn. However, Hitler got the office because of the machinations of the Catholic Centre party, who formed a coalition with him. They persuaded the President that Hitler could be "controlled". Several of their lesser members were rewarded by being shot in the night of the long knives. The episode was summed up nicely by a contemporary cartoon - showing the centrists riding the Nazi tiger.
