Default What did that fox want?

Ok, was just outside (middle of night here) to get the newspaper...

Anyway, as I came out I saw this HUGE fox, much bigger than the variants I have seen in Sweden...

As he saw me, he ran down the street, but stopped and looked back at me... He then did a hissing sound, however, I am not sure if it was pleading or hostile. Clearly I dont speak foxish.

Anyway, he then disappeared behind some cars...

Now, I stayed very still looking if I could see him again... I mean, it's not often you get to see a fox, and I was curious.

Now... some 2 minute later, I notice some movement to the left of me at the corner of my eye...

I look over, and the fox is only like 3 meters away, heading towards me!

Some natural reaction made me make quite a hiss as I very fast turned towards him...

The fox got spooked and disappeared.

Now... I don't know what to believe?

Did the fox attempt to attack me? I mean, sure it was a big fox, but still! I wouldnt have been very worried.

Did it seek aid for something?

    Was it just curious?

Some minute later I went to the kitchen and got a bowl of milk, a bowl of water, and some meat... I put it outside the house in case he was hungry /thirsty...

    Anyway, was wierd...

    What do you guys think?

You must be from the city, or at least a largeish town.

I usually tend to find wild animals cute and cuddly and wanna help them ;)

However, what do you figure the fox was after?

Let me explain this in plain English.

If the fox is around people that means one of two things.

It's starving and prone to bite anything (including you)
It has rabies (which kills you)

    Do not feed this animal

Do not feed wild animals, they cause all kinds of problems, especially in a city. In the country, if you're feeding animals in your yard, especially if you're near a highway, you can be prepared for a talking to from your neighbours.

What STFS and EMFM said. The fox was probably scavenging or hunting for an easy meal, which you interrupted.

You shouldn't feed it. Not only is it dangerous to feed wild animals, but if you encourage it to come back your neighbors will be quite unhappy when their pets begin to disappear.

    Done some further investigations...

    A) At this time of year, the foxes gets together with their mates again after the season.

    B) Most likely, the one who approached me was the mate, not the same fox. Foxes has bad eyesight, but are good at detecting movement. As I stood still it is most likely it didn't notice me untill I turned, and thats why it appeared to approach me, and that is why it ran away.

    C) Foxes are very suspicious, and it is highly unlikely they would eat the food I put out, as they would probably think it was a trap.

    D) If it had rabies it wouldn't have just ran away.

    E) Foxes still wouldnt attack a human no matter how hungry they are. Much for the same reason we wouldn't attack a bear empty handed no matter how hungry we were.

    F) Yes they growl, the sound I heard was probably a warning to its mate, and not directed at me.

    G) Foxes do not attack pets like cats and dogs (they make too much sound). of course, if you might have a pet hamster running around freely in your back yard it might happen... Only attacks has been against puppies and kittens...

    So, THERE!

I guess I answered my own question

Thanks for the input though, btw, if you have some spare time read up on foxes. They are quite cool!

I would've been equally disappointed if it had been about fox news

Its an urban fox, they are extremely common.
If you don't see them you will probably hear them or see the mess they make.
It makes no difference if you feed it or not, they scavenge for your food scraps anyway.

Well tribes... I live in a VERY small village (5000 people)... surounded by mountains and woodlands.

I dont think the fox can be very urban, specially considering the amount of hunters here.

When I went home for the hols I was shocked to find that there was a set of traffic lights in the main street. WTF?!?! I come home from the hole that is Sydney, to get away from all the big city for a while, and part of it's come with me! Why are there no roundabouts in Sydney? All they have are traffic lights everywhere, and traffic lights are pure evil!

    IT'S A CONSPIRACY I TELL YOU!!!!

A bloodcurdling sound like a baby crying in pain. The main voice sounds like a baby crying, but with an additional discordance like a grown up with a particularly painful injury. Absolutely ghastly.

No, the obvious question is what you then call a settlement with 200 people. Or what you count as large village.
We are all aware that the senses can be deceived, the eyes fooled. But how can we be sure our senses are not being deceived at any particular time, or even all the time? Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere, tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? And does my life gain or lose meaning based on my reaction to such solipsism?

How common is rabies in other countries? A few years ago my parents found a couple of dead bats in the yard, presumably killed by our cats so we took them to the vet. He gave them shots but also said there was little to worry about since rabies is extremely rare in the Neth's nowadays.
