Default How would you describe heaven?

Last Sunday morning, it was "Sinterklaas". Sinterklaas is a fellow with a long white beard who walks on the roofs and who, together with his servant, Zwarte Piet, brings presents for children every 6th of December.

He also brings candy, cookies and chocolate.

Of course, I'm no longer a child, so the friendly old man doesn't bring me anymore presents or candy, but my lovely wife surprised me with a huge pile of chocolate on the breakfeast table.

When I was sitting there, in the kitchen, with a hot cup of coffee in my right hand, chocolate in the left hand, putting the chocolate in the coffee and letting it melt in my mouth, piece after piece of excellent chocolate melted in hot coffee, it suddenly struck me that if there is a heaven, then it must be like that.

A lazy Sunday with no obligations, nothing that needs to be done, no where to go to, cold weather outside, warm inside the house, good music coming out of the radio, excellent female company, and a never ending sensation of melting chocolate in my mouth.

    That's heaven for me.

This reminds me of an Andre Agassi quote after he had won a particularly hard tournament final in his prime (one of the large prestigoius ones); asked how he felt, he said that it was like being "a homosexual in a submarine".

Everyone loves somebody and everyone is loved by somebody. Romantically and Platonically

    That's all one needs.

Now if I were to paint a picture for you.

It's sundown in Texas, the sky is a bright pink. There is football on the radio and meat on the BBQ. The kids play and their laughter echos throughout the yard while the adults sit and chew the fat for eternitey.

Some beer would be nice to

My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.

A historic old house in rural England or France with a bottomless wine cellar, an oak-paneled library filled with history books, and my wife. A FIOS line to a gaming supercomputer would also be nice.

Also, a Mercedes SLR. And a Bugatti Veyron. Make it two Veyrons.

I guess you have to wonder how close to heaven we could come on earth. Perhaps if technology advanced to the point where there wasn't a shortage of basic goods, medical technology improved so that diseases weren't a big factor in people's lives, we had better methods for treating depression, we could eliminate mental disorders like sociopathy, hmmmm.

I don't know if you wouldn't hit a biological limit. TinCow becomes bored with his life, Andres becomes sick of chocolate by day three, agassi's boyfriend cheats on him with the assistant navigator.

Heaven implies something persistant and constant, impossible for humanity I would guess.

You really had to ruin it, hm? Destroying my dreams with some depressing thoughts.

You're just being jealous because I still have a lot of chocolate waiting in my cellar to be consumed next Sunday.

That's very true, no matter how idylic a setting, I'd probably get bored of it eventually if it never changed. Variety is the spice of life.

Well, you go chase variety while I read books in your rural house, enjoying the exquise wines from your cellar and the company of your wife, play some games and drive around your Mercedes. Have fun.

You think i'm joking? A turkey sandwich made from leftovers on the day after Thanksgiving. Maybe a little brown mustard for good measure.

dammit... I hate agreeing with Sasaki...

STOP STEALING MY THOUGHTS! GET OUT OF MY HEAD!!!

ah... missed the first part... luckily that ruined it all. We'll never get close to heaven, ever. Because whenever we come one step closer to the bar we've raised, we'll raise the bar another level. So heaven will always be better, grass will always look greener on the other side. even when the sahara has swallowed up the entire earth. or maybe esspecially then.

Yesterday, after 8 months of false starts, dead ends, tedious coding and infuriating bug fixing, I finally finished the calculation I've been working on since April. Reams upon reams of painstakingly crafted code concertinaed down to produce the single expression "candidate/comparison = 1.0".

That was a pretty good moment.

Sitting with my two closest friends. I can't think of anything that would bring me that much joy.

Or if you want something that I'd actually be able to do: Building a computer, pushing the power button and it working perfectly. The reward of work well done is good enough.

Absolutely zero concerns, obligations, or responsibilities.

Where exactly would that be? I can't quite say, since I'm certain it would be changing around a lot. The point, however, is the freedom to find out and go to those places.

Retired in Hawaii, with a beach front property. A full cellar of wine and a cabinet stocked with rum and vodka. A loving wife. Sitting on the front porch in a rocking chair, watching the ocean, wearing a Hawaiin shirt, white slacks, and fedora... And, of course, no obligations or concerns outside the immediacy of family.

It is better to conquer yourself than to win a thousand battles. Then, the victory is yours. It cannot be taken from you, not by angels or by demons, heaven or hell.

That's the only way I could imagine a heaven being. A time when: Everything was beautiful. Nothing hurt.

It feels like heaven sitting in the sunlight on a cold winter morning with a cup of coffee......but it is transient....
I never really understood the concept of heaven myself....for basically if all the stuff written about it is to be believed, basically heaven means a place where you no longer want anything....
Now that can be because you get everything you want (not possible) or because you actually no longer want anything at all.....
Either way, that is what it is supposed to be....complete peace....perfection......That is what they say isn't it? When a man reaches perfection he reaches heaven (for instance Galahad, in The Once and Future King)....
The concept here is quite similar too.....Nirvana. The blowing out of the candle, because the dawn has come.

The horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight.

I would descrive heaven as spending an eternity in a place where all interesting people are missing, along with almost all of my friends. And they are replaced with This kind of people

    Heaven......

retired after a long enjoyable career. grandchildren come to visit occaisonally. living on the family land in Montana. Hunting and fly fishing in the daytime and at night after eating great food i caught getting to retire to my library. maple lined walls, wall to wall bookshelves sections for history, philosophy, and of course trashy fiction. Writing some books in my spare time at my leisure, male friends to hang out with, and a woman to love and spend my life with.

honestly, it isnt about havent lots of stuff im all about simple lifestyles with a few nice things you truly enjoy. For me Books, family and the outdoors.
