Thread: Pontic noble cavarly... ouch...

    Default Pontic noble cavarly... ouch...

I just witnessed my Hypaspistai crumble from just one charge from these guys... and it wasn't like they were out on their own... I had them on my left flank backed by hellenic heavy spearmen and agrianian assault infantry right behind them and medium phalanx on their right. Just one charge from these guys routed my elites and the only thing that saved them from utter destruction was the spearmen and assault troops behind them... so much for being elite.

They aren't line infantry. They have the very problematic sword/spear combo so getting them to use the right weapon is a little difficult. Also, were they moving? Usually you're fine even with swords unless you're moving.
Fighting isn't about winning, it's about depriving your enemy of all options except to lose.

Yeah I noticed the buggy sword/spear switch especially when charging and no they were not moving I saw the charge coming and halted them and had the spearmen and assault infantry that were behind my Hypaspistai attack them with javelins. That's the last time I have them protect a flank ill stick with my heavy spearmen and hold them in reserve.

    What is Pontic Noble Cavalry???

Are you referring to Khuveshavagan Shahvar (Pontic Early Bodyguard) or the late ones?

Yoi, the Khuveshavangane Shavar is a rather good shock unit, so it wasn't surprising to see them charging a line of swordsmen and win before the swordsmen deploy their spears.

you should assign your own heavy cavalry branch to take out such heavy cavalry units first... do you have any Hetairoi/ Thessalikoi Ippeis/ Mistophoros strategos avalaible ???

The Late Baktrian Boduguards are even more sick puppies, as I've discovered today...47 Charge bonus and 30 Armor ....almost seems unfair using them, but of course I am ;)

Hypaspistai have always been buggy for me. They are troops that should have been great, but end up short. I just use Agranians to flank and Thorakitai/Hoplitai to hold. Don't be surprised by the performance of Eastern Cavalry, tread carefully and use phalangitai liberally.
