I've only seen duck served in Chinese food resturaunts. I've heared its dark and oily. Doesn't sound very appetizing. Besides, little duckies are too cute to eat! I just wanna say 'qwack, qwack, qwack' till their cute little beaks fall off! (not literally of course)

The pic I posted was a Mallard duckling. The ducklings do look similar to the Pacific Blacks, but they change as they get older.

I've never actually eaten ducklings, I don't imagine there would be much meat on them, but I have eaten duck and duck eggs, both being much more tasty than chicken.


The grown Pacific Black still looks quite similar to the Mallard female, but nothing like the Mallard male.

Actually, it is dark but one of the best tasting meats there is. However, if you order from a Chinese, ask for it shredded. Sometimes they do it automatically anyway, but I always had a bad run-in with duck, when it hasn't been shredded when bought from a chinese resturant.

Restaurant-cooked duck tends to be dry and even, which is good if you're just looking for meat. I prefer home-roasted duck, which is less evenly cooked, but has those moments of wonderful caramelisation and parts where the balance of fat and meat is just right. This only applies of course if you eat it fresh from the oven. Leave it for a few hours, and it becomes just as dry as any other restaurant-cooked duck, except not as professionally done.

Getting back to the OP. I've never played with ducklings, but I used to play with chicklets, which were pretty cute.

Actually, any waterfowl is going to be fairly fatty. Think about it for six seconds and you'll figure out why. (Hint: bouyancy.) The trick is how you manage all of that fat while cooking it. If you don't do anything, yes, you're going to have a comparatively oily meat. You also should go back to cooking frozen pizzas, 'cause you're a culinary idiot.

I'd go into some solutions, but it really depends on how you're cooking the bird. Making a gumbo? Scoop the excess fat off the top. Roasting? Suspend the bird on a grate of some sort and have a pan ready to catch the waterfall of drippings. Etcetera.

Ducklings are too small to make a satisfying meal. Wait for them to grow up.

Also, duck fat is considerably less unpleasant than far from red meats like lamb and beef. It's less fatty somehow.

Duck rolls sound good. After reading this tread I might try some duck (not duckling) some time if convienent.

Bathing with duckies reminds me of that song Ernie once sang on Seseme Street. After which time Bert yelled at his for eating cookies in bed. Dessert after a duck gumbo.
