"My name is Eukleides Nikias Apollon. I born of Eugenios Nikiandros and Andromeda. My father fought to unite the hellas, and I fought to defend it against its most powerful foe yet. I write this history from accounts of the elders of Sparte, and my father's own accounts before his passing. In 275 BC, 3 great hellenic cities united to face the threat of Makedon. Her imperial ambitions still hounded against us even after the death of Alexandros! Athenai, Rhodes. These were the only free states willing to risk joining Sparte on her defiance of the evil tyranny of Makedonian rule. One king! Who will keep that single king from corrupting?! Our King Kleonomos went to Athenai by ship to ask for assistance in fighting back the Hounds of Hades as they were then known. Reluctantly the Attike's accepted, and prepared their citizen warriors to face the coming war. Rhodes had already begged Sparte to aid them if Makedon decided to attempt a second invasion of their island. Perhaps the warning of the Collosus was not enough? That statue was built with the money gained from Makedon's abandoned seige equipment after all. Sparte agreed to send aid if such an invasion occurred, but not unless Rhodes sent economic support. Our great state could not stand alone, dispite our military prowess.. We had but 700 Homoi left. Our old barracks were falling apart with the economic crisis, we could not afford to continue to train young men in the old ways like before. In 272 BC The new King Areus Agiados went to Crete to find mercenaries willing to help our plight. Most of our army accompanied our king incase the King of Crete decided to attack our forces despite our prior notice of our true intentions on the island. Such actions were prudent in the perilous times..."

Well my current KH campaign will be taking a backseat for once, and I'll be starting this new one today.
Screenshots will be Raw, with minimal UI, since im retarded at computer stuff.

This IS MY FIRST AAR so bear with me I hope you guys like it. Its gunna be somewhat of a blood bath haha. The main enemies will be Epirots, Makedon, Athens and Carthage or Rome (whom ever is the largest and moves into the Hellas)

"To keep from going into debt, Areus borrowed 5000 mnai from Ptolemaic Egypt under the condition that it would be paid back in full as soon as the Spartan League could, and if the Ptolemaic Pharaoh ever needed military aid, it would be sent with haste. The League put this money to use immediately. Agathokles, King of Rhodes, designed a completely new port to support the new flow of trade from Egypt. In Athens the council decided to do the same, and also fixed the drainage problem below the Acropolis. Sparta herself invested in a larger market with the Ptolemaic gold.

Areus Agiados of Lakedaimonios was met by King Ainesidemos to discuss his possible admittance to the Spartan led alliance. Unfortunately for the late Ainesidemos, he declined, giving Areus the remainder of the day to leave Crete or he would lead his men to the field to face the Spartan.
Fearing a trap set by Makedon, Areus declined, and challenged the young King. "We will meet you, at your city!" He replied, asking for the island's surrender. The Cretan also declined the Hedgemon's generous offer of joining the alliance as a full member, and returned to Kydonia. Later in the week all 242 men from Ainesidemos' Phalangites and 320 of his best archers defected to Areus. Feeling he had the upperhand, Areus now laid seige to the city.

Once finished the rams in early Theros, Areus now pleaded to the young King to join the Alliance, and that his life would be spared, and he'd retain his position as king. A single volley of arrows was the only reply from the city. Areus now had no choice... His words before his men were remembered and recorded. 'Today fellow Hellens we fight for honour! We fight that so one day, all the Hellas may be at peace with eachother, and a see a new age of Greek prosperity! The Cretan King has made an enemy of Sparta! Let us show him what happened to Persia when they became our enemies! NIKE SHINES HER GLORY ON US TODAY!"


Using his 320 cretan archers to cover the ram's advance, the 162 Athenian Hoplites advanced.
The ram did its job, and the Athenians found a suitable standoff point to hold back the counter attack. The constant bombardmant from the turncoat archers kept the enemy off the Athenians just long enough to set in formation

Areus began moving his unit of Spartan hoplites into the city, seeing the Athenians being pushed back by the shear weight of the Cretans he ordered them to withdraw and the Spartans now took the fight with deadly efficiency.

After several hours of fighting, most of the Cretans lay dead, and when Ainesidemos took flight himself the rest of his army was not long in following! The Hedgemon took this fatal error to heart and charged his men home, butchering the straglers, and setting up next to the intersection before the town square. He sent his second in command to order the Cretan Phalangites and Rhodesian hoplites to deploy within the walls. It was during this crucial phase at the intersection where Ainesidemos made a final heroic charge and was killed by a Spartan named Eukleides, My father's father. Areus fought wave after wave, cutting any and all resistance to pieces with his blade, till they reached the square.

'A LAST PITIFUL CHARGE BOYS! TO HOME! CHARGE!' Cried Areus upon seeing 30 odd hoplites charging from the otherside of the intersection. But before the lines clashed, the Cretans turned and fled!

Mere metres from the town square a hundred or so Peltastai tried to hold the spartans off but to no avail, they broke in a matter of minutes. Leading his men by example Areus charged again, cutting deep into the Cretans and he was the first to reach the square, cut off from his men Areus fought like a lion and defended himself till the rest of the hoplites reached him. The Cretan turncoat Phalangites moved up to the intersection to cover the Spartans backs.

Seeing this Areus called out to his men 'REFORM! WE MUST REFORM! FALLBACK!' But in truth this was no rout, but a cleverly guised, and old, Spartan trick! they lead the Cretans into their own Phalangites and allowed the Spartans some well deserved rest.

The Phalangites moved forward and butchered the cretans till they got to the square, Spartans tagging behind closely. The cretans fought tooth and nail, but it all eventually perished. The final Cretan fell to a Spartan named Achiaos.


Despite most Cretans welcoming direct Spartan control and a Hedgemon Areus decided to expel all Cretans still loyal to their dead King's dynasty, even though the Queen decided to accept the Spartan King's offers. Once settling the Athenian hoplites in the newest addition to the Spartan League, and setting up the new government, Areus took the rest of his warriors and set sail for Athens to help defend her from the coming attack from Makedon."

Good update, but I think you're making things too easy by giving yourself 15.000 mnai to be honest... Also takes the fun out of the game, if you get me. I've always found it fun to fight myself into a considerable power against all odds as the Koinon.

what by multiplying the numbers by 10? so instead of 320 archers it would have been 3200? 2420 Phalangites? The spartan numbers will remain the same though.

Well, I play with "100" unit size (from the preferences.txt) and multiply my numbers by the factor 15. If it seems too much, I may crop it down or just mention the number of units. But mostly, especially during big battles and sieges, I multiply both mine and the enemy's numbers by 15 in my AAR.

I removed 10 grand and switched the value in the AAR to 5000 mnai. you were right Maion Maroneios, 15 grand is kinda steep. So im in the hole 2000 now. Doesnt matter though. Corinith is next, then Chalkis. I cant wait to see some Lesbians ahaha

Well, when I said 15 I meant with the unit size I use. For me, a phalangitai unit has 152 men, multiplied by 15 gives us 2.280 men. A full stacked army has roughly 2.000 in-game men, so multiplying this by 15 gives you a total of 30.000 men, which is IMO, a very good and realistic number. Historically, large single armies tended to be more or less the number I mentioned, after that it became difficult to manage.

Ahhh, Well, I'm going to make myself some chicken soup right now, then I'm adding another update cause well, This AAR stuff is really fun hahaha. I just took Korinth and Chalkis, the latter was more reluctant to join the cause, but was forced into it if they wanted to be free from Makedon.

I didnt say this before, so I'll say it now, Governments will be instantly installed if the City joined the League without coercement. Unrest will cause the government to be installed slower. Chalkis is one of these, due to protesters. who were given a funny punishment, and it will have effects later in the story.

Also anyone else following this, I am wondering if I should make a short military alliance with Epirotes. Would this make any sense? I'm using poetic license with my AAR, but I'd like to stay within the confines of plausibility. Some things I'll come to you guys for, like certain alliances and stuff, so what you guys want will have an effect on what happens somewhat.

For much later when the 2nd Pelopenesian war happens, I'd like someone to Be the Supreme commander of Athens. Maion if your interested, she's all yers.



UPDATE NUMBA 2
Securing the Peloponnese
A ballsy opportunistic Admiral named Kleon, King of Thieves attacked the Athenian fleet with 157 ships in between the Attike port and Krete.

Admiral Nikandros used his faster Pentekonteroi to flank the slower pirates, sinking 117 ships, caturing 7 and losing only 45 of his own.. Kleon drowned in the battle and the surviving pirates dispersed in all directions. After dropping off Areus' army at the port, Nikandros sailed to the Isthmus to engage the Makedones fleet there. Effectively trapping them. Admiral Arpalos commanded 105 Pentekonteroi, and Nikandros had 112 with 7 of the pirates vessels. The bloody engagement lasted the entire day, creeping into the night. Arpalos lost 57 ships, while Nikandros lost only 31 and captured 4. Admiral Arpalos blitzed through towards the Agean and went North, with Nikandros closely behind him. and was engaged by the Makedonian fleet led by Admiral Alkaios in late Autumn.

Korinthos sent a runner to Sparte, to ask the other King that they would gladly join the league if Sparte would liberate them. And also notified them that the majority of the Makedonian army left with their King to engage Pyhrros near Pella. King Akrotatos Agiados accepted and immediately left for Korinthos with 124 Spartans, 3240 Athenians, and 2400 Helots, arriving and laying siege that very week. Areus moved and challenged a inferior army led by a Captain Hephaistion just East of Athenai, but they withdrew to Euboia.

Reaching the enemy fleet several days after Hephaistion's hasty retreat, Admiral Nikandros attacked. The battle was a massacre. all Makedonian ships were sunk and Admiral Alkaios was captured and executed. Nikandros' 2nd Echelon lost 2 ships, being the only losses. Due to this stunning victory Nikandros was given the option to retire, but he refused saying "I shall serve on the seas till the day I die." The old seadog sailed deep into the Agean searching for his only escaped foe... Arpalos. He found him admist a brutal storm off the island of Skyros

Nikadros sunk all the Makedonian ships without a single loss of his own. Tales of Nikandros' battles had by now reached the farthest extent of the Mediterranean, by the time of the Battle of Skyros he was only 36. He now took the initiative and blockaded the trading port at Lesbos.

In early Spring of 271 BC, Euboia, begging Areus to free them from Makedon reluctantly agreed to join the Spartan League if they indeed defeated Hephaistions army. Areus left in the Early winter dispite the frigid temperature as a sign of good faith and determination to free the Euboians. His army comprised of 120 Spartans, 3240 Athenian hoplites, 1200 Helot slingers, 1410 Cretan archers, and the remaining 1830 Cretan Phalangites. Totalling 7700 men. He built to rams and sent a diplomat to Pella demanding the surrender of Korinth and Euboia. Odysseus Kalabrios, was unsuccessful in swaying the Makedonians, so he told them "Your Generals will hang by their necks from the Akropolis."

It was around this time that Sparte's long awaited market was finished. Something the town could be wholesomely proud of. The influx of traders helped push Sparte's crumbling economy back.
King Akrotatos Agiados attacked Korinth with his 6890 warriors Korinth was defended by 5400 men led by an Alexandros Argeades. An influential drunk (as most Makedonians are) with only small skirmishes under his belt. No match for a hardened Spartan Lion like an Agiados.

"LIBERTY! FREEDOM! All Spartans know and live by this words, day after day! But not all Greeks are as lucky! As free men it is our duty to save our brothers from these Makedonian Barbarians!" The reply came loudest from the smallest in numbers... "HARROO HARROOOO!"

There was no resistance on the walls where the tower was going.

The first Athenian detachment moved up quickly and engaged the Phalangites foolishly placed on the walls. The Athenians performed poorly, losing almost 100 men, for 20 or 50 Makedones within the first hour. This began to change when the 2nd detachment of Athenians deployed on the walls and engaged. But despite their best efforts the Athenians began dropping faster than they could kill.

"We must deploy... now... The Athenians are outnumbered. This battle will be decided by Sparta not Athens." Akrotatos told his Lieutenant. He deployed on the walls and moved into the streets, running around the walls and moving back up through the Gatehouse.

As the Spartans moved along the sides of wall A young Athenian pushed the Makedonian Standard bearer off the walls with his shield, effectively gutting the moral of the phalangites and marking the end of their lives. "FOR ATHENA!!!" Outnumbered and outskilled these citizen warriors fought tooth and nail, like true warriors, refusing to quit. the thousands of bodies littered the wall breaking the efficiency of the melee. It was a boodbath.

"SPARTA HAVE COME! PUSH ON!" The now trapped Makedones were butchered by the Spartans, and not a moment too soon. only 680 of the original 3240 Athenians remained at the end of the engagement. "Hail Spartan, you've saved us." one Athenian is quoted as saying upon greeting his saviours. The King took his helots and his into the streets, leaving the Athenians to look after the wounded and dead.

118 spartans vs. 1500 hoplites and 550 heavy horses... an unfair advantage... for Sparte! Victory was assured.
The King deployed at the end of the streed, goading the young Alexandros. This would be no repeat of Alexandros The Great's cavalry charge.
The horses pushed the Spartans back to the helots and were promptly massacred

Only 5 of his best horsemen remained when Alexandros pulled out. When the Spartans reformed back at the end of the street, Alexandros foolishly repeated his charge.

this time no dice... in minutes his men were dead leaving him surrounded. He fought valiantly, killing a Spartan named Timarchos, finally being silenced by by Xenophon, a 40 year old man, stabbing him through the curiass. But the young man refused to die. He broke Xenophons spear, swinging his sword violently. Xenophon drew his blade and sliced the poor boy's head off cleanly.

The final engagement was brutal and quick. Using the helots to surround the last men in the square, Akrotatos massacred the rest. The last hoplite was quoted as saying "Forgive us." before being slain.
85 Spartans lived to tell their glorious tale, of the 6890 Greeks who faced Makedon, 4410 survived. 45 prisoners were taken and would serve their lives as slaves.

Akrotatos was celebrated as a hero, he let Korinth remain as a Klerouchia, governing her own internal affairs, but military control was given to Sparte to protect the whole of the League. With his helots and Spartans, Akrotatos returned to Sparte.

Eudamidas Eurypontidos, a Spartan General was sent with 124 Spartans and 3600 Helots to bolster Athens' defence.
Two weeks later Areus launched his own assault on Chalkis.
"The Gods watch your everymove today! Do Zeus, Ares, Athena, and Nike proud! For you owe them everything! Be brave, and we will enjoy another victory!"
Again the cheers of the Spartans outweighed those of the other nations.

The barrages worked just like on Krete. The Athenian Hapoi moved to the left to cover the Kretan Phalangites, who held off the Makedones' counter attacks against the gateway.

The Athenians Haploi moved to the Western Street and held the counter attacks there,

the regular Hoplitai moved to the right, and swung around on the Eastern approach.

All warriors performed well, advancing at pace, casualties minimal, & many Makedones were slaughtered. But Bombarded by Javalins, the haploi charged prematurely before the Kretans and Spartans were still fighting in the street. This caused the Regulars to charge aswell to save the levy hoplites.

Areus seeing this moved through the Phalangites and cut the remaining Makedonian hoplites to peices then charged home into the enemy phalangites.
Somewhere in the resulting carnage Hephaistion was killed, the man responsible is not known even to this day. but he most likely fell to an Athenian.
With the Phalangites surrounded, the Makedones were quickly slain.

Chalkis was secured. "LONG LIVE AREUS! HARROO!" was the victory cry. No Makedon survived the battle.

Several hundred Euboians protested the League, saying they were no better than the Makedones. Areus invited them to endure the same hardship he and all Spartan boys must. He threw them out into the hills with only a loin cloth and a spear. The rest of Chalkis fell in line. Due to this unrest though the Klerouchia government took much longer to install then predicted, taking roughly 6 seasons.

After this Areus decided he should push forth to Makedone taking the fight to their people for a change. But only next year. That Spring had seen the unity of the Peloponnese. Sparte was safe... For now. It was then Kalabrios was sent to meet with Pyhrros to discuss a military alliance against Makedon. this discussion took over a season, with many meetings, and it's result was not certain. It was during the summer of 271 that the League's economy was on the rise. Bolstered trade from Chalkis and Korinth, aswell as goods from Ptolemy, and grain exports from Rhodes kicked the economy back over. Albeit 113 mnai or so...

Anyway, awesome AAR! Definitely following this. I love your style, as it is the perfect mix of roleplaying and reality. I don't like AARs that are overly roleplayed, but at the same time neither a simple commentary is enough, and your AAR is right in between those two things. I also have to commend you on that advertising campaign prior to the release of your AAR . You definitely know how to draw people's attention .

EDIT: the screenshots are in the "tgas" folder that's right in the main RTW folder. They are in tga format though, so you'll have to convert them before posting.

Chapter 3: An Uneasy Peace

I appologize for not updating in a while, and the lack of screens, I lost them all in a cpu crash after I exited the game on Friday. luckily I write my AAR by hand first, then I make the 2nd draft changes here on the forum.

Autumn! Sinope is attacked by hordes of Pontic barbarians! Agathokles sent 100mnai in grain, bows, arrows, and bowstrings, 4 catapults, and 150 men to permanently join the sinope defence force. Rhodes also had finished the docks and began construction of a new naval dock which only cost the League 1600 mnai. Sparta began clearing out a harbour and fixed their drainage issue in the main quarter. Admiral Nikandros said back to Athens to avoid Poseidon's angry storms of winter. He left Athenai in 272 aged 36, a fresh sailor. He returned a triumphant hero, a wiley captain, with only 89 ships of the original 172 under his command. The extra hands returning from sea pushed the construction of the new docks to late winter. My father joined his father that summer at the age of 19. He noticed the King Areus had gained an affinity with Athenia, perhaps it was her acting through him in our war against the Makedonian Hegemon. Areus sent word to Sparta he was planning a raid on Thessalia, but the Euphors prohibited it. Till we were attacked on the Peloponnese any aggressiveness would be uncalled for they said. The oracle of Delphi told us the Euphors cared not for Greece but only Sparta. When Areus returned from Delphi he decided to obey the Euphors and Spartan law and waited at Athens expecting Makedon. The year ended with no attack however, and scouts were sent to Thessalia to watch for any strike coming in Spring and after. Agathokles' second son was born 2nd week of spring. Named Otos of Rhodos. King Akrotatos of Sparta began construction on some simple docks for Sparta now that there was a suitable harbour cleared. Korinth started digging sewers seeing a possible problem in the future. Early summer of 270, Eudamidas & Areus joined the Elusians. As areus' scribe, my father became well acquainted with the late King Areus. It was Areus who pushed for new sewers in athens. Seeing the horrendous condition the poor had to live in. It was he who commissioned the new temple to Athenai, and he who built the sanctuary of Asklepieos in Athens. It was he who sealed the alliance with Phyrros. Late summer Areus took 248 Spartans to "scout" the border area since the scouts who were dispatched in late winter did not ever send word. 1550 Athenian hoplites were sent to "patrol" the Attike, both meeting up on the border for the raid. Chremonides the League rep for Athens accepted a ceasefire with Selukeia on the condition they end hostilities with Ptolemy, and that trade between the two nations flow. He then built a colony on the isle of Mykonos, just as his naval dock was built.

Under the excuse of chasing a thief stealing food from his camp, Areus crossed the border with his men, and recieved reinforcements of 2400 helots and the 18 100 Cretan Phalangites.
By the end of Summer Areus' ploy did not pay off.. The field armies of Makedon retreated into Demetrias, and refused to come out to engage by the beginning of winter. Areus returned to the Peloponnese.
Autumn 269 Areus oncovered a MAkedonina spy network in Athens, rounded them up, and publicly executed them. He left their headless corpses hanging from the gates as a warning to future enemy agents who would pass them. Korinth began updating her merchant quarter and Chalkis completed a Shrine to Poseidon. As Areus returned to Sparte with Eudamidas a festival was held to Nike to celebrate their return and many victories against the Makedones.
That winter Agathokles died of natural causes, and a festival on the island was held everyear since on that day to commemorate his contribution to her glory. It was also to keep the minds of the populace of Rhodes off the Impending disaster in the recordbooks and budgets since Agathokles did all the bookeeping budgeting and other management things himself. Especially since it was his eldest boy, Eugenios, aged 10, who would be assuming the throne of Rhodos.
Ptolemy demanded their money, in full, by the end of 268. Areus agreed to pay, and said he'd send
Admiral Nikandros with the money in the summer of '68. The young Rhodesian commissioned a new public gymnasium which was schedualed for completion in 2 1/2 years.

Hermine, daughter of Areus was married to Chlidanon Lamptraios of Attike. An Attike-born man who's family had roots in Pontos Euxeniou. He was a calm, Skilled, unflaggin cavalryman who took few luxuries in life. He knew his way around politics and government, an dhe was sent to Athens to study till he was 20 years of age.
In Summer 268, Admiral Nikandros left the port of Athens and set sail for Alexandria. A brutal storm put him off schedual and he would arrive in early Spring 267. Akrotatos competed in the 268 Olympics. The day before his son competed, Areus had a vision of fighting in the streets of Sparte against an enemy he did not recognize in a style he had not seen before. They bore red like the hoplites of Sparte, but fought with large shields and a small sword. He assumed this dream to be a warning from Athena, and began experimenting with large rectangular shaped shields and how to defeat soldiers armed like the men he saw in his vision. He gave a grant of 4800 mnai to the blacksmiths in Sparte so that they could band together and they were now paid and organized by the Spartan Hegemon. The grant would be paid back in full in a year and a half - Winter 267.

Cretan boy's who were seen as hardy, and good potential were taken from their parents and shipped to Sparta to undergo the Agoge. Athens had its own Doros Aithalidos, son of Chremonides, sent for the agoge in late 268. These men would become future soldiers and fight in the ranks of the Hoplitai trained in Sparte. They were given Spartan citizenship if they completed the Agoge, and were called Companions.
Nikandros arrived early Spring, and saw that in breech of the Ceasefire agreement with Arche Seluekia, they were blockading the port of Alexandria. He broke the ceasefire, in a surprise attack at night. He surrounded the 25 Seleukid Kerkuoi as so,

trapping the enemy against the port. Nikandros and another ship went up the gap and forced the Seleukids to attack the belt. 2 ships were lost for 13 of the Seleukids. The others escaped and Nikandros quickly dropped off the money and sailed east to destroy the remnants of the Seleukid navy.
Back home Athens begun Construction of a newer, larger barracks, and Areus declared in a public address that the Spartan League had secured all of the Peloponnese and asked all the Hellens to send word to the Spartan Council chambers they wished to join the League against Makedon. Our men were itching to go back to Thessalia.

They where. There was no name for one who completed the Agoge, even the Spartiatai. Rather, if they did manage to complete it (the Spartiatai), they became Homioi, or Equals.
