So he felt guilty for living a life of luxury while people live and die in poverty in Iraq...a nice sentiment. But actually going there? What was he thinking?
If he wanted to see poor people living miserable lives exposed to constant danger, he could have picked a dozen other countries who are worse off then Iraq. Why Iraq? He isn't Iraqi- his parents were, he's American. He doesn't speak a word of Arabic, probably isn't even a muslim. He knows nothing about the local culture. It's a miracle he survived longer then ten minutes. His parents being originally form Iraq means shit- why would the Iraqi's look differently upon him then on any other American?
All this makes him a good hearted, yet blissfully ignorant fool. Hopefully he has learned his lesson.
It wasn't real bright going there with minimal preparation, but kudos to the kid for wanting to find out what Iraq is really like.
"The facts of history cannot be purely objective, since they become facts of history only in virtue of the significance attached to them by the historian." E.H. Carr
Why Iraq? As an American citizen he has the right to personally see what his country is doing in Iraq.
he had the right but not the brains, he seemed to have no idea of what kind of place this was, it would be just as likely to have him taken hostage as return home safe.

Not your average teenage runaway....
"Yeah, you see when I was a teen, I ran away from home... I got as far as Kirkwood... there was a hobo...."
I still do not see the problem with someone trying to find the truth and seeing things for themselves. The only issue is between him and his parents and that he ditched school.

What?!? When I said I agreed with the boy in the other thread I got no support, while DevDave sticks up for him and people flock to support DevDave!Originally Posted by LeftEyeNine

Why didn't his dad just tell him what it was like on his visit instead of helping him with the visa .
Perhaps the father should have taken a video camera to show his son the sights , then again daddy didn't want to look too much like a tourist in Iraq I suppose , or even worse a journalist![]()

Tell your friend that if he had invested every single penny he spent for that shirt on his own sense of humor, he'd level up higher than those shirt manufacturers.I'm Hungary for Turkey
I'm not even abroad but already bored (not annoyed) with this joke. Is it really so funny -some cultural difference maybe I'm not getting the idea of over-repeating a joke whatever it is about?

if he can't take that joke, then that's just sad...
I'm not saying you can't, but if that's the case...
A joke is funny maybe the first 3 times, when you have heard it a 3 hundred times it becomes a tad boring.
Mmm...
After re-reading it I thought that's what he meant...
The last line in his statement confused me though...
whatever it is about?
I want to see pictures. And he should have worn a t-shirt with that photoshopped picture of Bush giving Saddam a noogie
