Default Hilarious Family Trees! You have to see this...

Well, many of you have already noticed that the choosing of the current faction heir seems to follow rules that few of us understand.
In my first campaign playing as the French this has been done to the point where I just can't take it anymore and went out to create an imageshack account just so that I could share this with you.
Below you will see my beloved King and his prefered Heir.

So let's try to understand what happend here:
We have King Gile, who should not be king in the first place, because as you can see his grand-father was the former king and had adopted his father Germaine Philibert before his first son Henri had come of age. So somehow Germain Philibert ended up being heir and upon his death the new heir became.. his eldest son Gile Philibert of course!
So our somewhat shaky heir Gile waits until his grandfather dies and now is the new righteous (???) king. And whom does he choose as his new heir?
Let's see, his children have not yet come of age so they're ruled out. Maybe his uncle, who should have gotten the crown in the first place would make a good choice. Well not him apparently!
So following some crude and obviously poor logic the programm goes back to the old king and looks up his brothers.
Second eldest brother Noel Touchet would come to mind, but lo and behold he's only married himself into the family, we won't give him the crown!
What else have we got, ah, Henry the Chivalrous what a fine man, what a fine man. The third eldest son of King Phillip the Chivalrous too, perfect!
But wait, who's this? This looks interesting the youngest brother, well and he's mad too. You know what, that poor boy was probably always the victim of his elder brothers jokes and they never allowed him to go to the tourney fields with them either. Let's make him heir and see how he likes it!

All jokes aside this issue is honestly killing me....

    Lol!

I know what you mean...I am hoping that patch 1.2 sorts this out...and give users back control of the faction heir..or at least some sense to it..

Not sure what went wrong here....I try to ignore it as much as possible

Ok, that is certainly an odd tree...

I have sent Henry the Mad on a suicide attack against the HRE in the meantime. All he had done before was sit in a fort guarding the border against them, so really no waste there. His elder brother Henry the Chivalrous became heir then, the third son of Phillip the Chivalrous. So it looks like the programm goes from the youngest to the eldest son. Strange...
Probably gonna kill King Gile although that will rob me of another noble, but he was never meant to be king!

Looking at your tree, Gile should have become King, but Henry not

Default AW: Hilarious Family Trees! You have to see this...

I have a theory that the choice of the faction heir has something to do with some traits that the king and the heir have in common (But I think being the son of the king helps, too). I had a king with the trait uninhibited. And his heir had this trait, too. The heir was a rather weak personality, so I got rid of him by sending him on a single cog to the mediterranean where he got killed by enemy fleets. The next heir that was chosen by the king again had the uninhibited trait. Now I decided to get rid of them both.

Finally I had another king after that who had the courageous trait. And his heir had this one, too. And maybe mad kings would rather choose mad heirs?

I would be very interested if other players can confirm this.

Isn't there a way in the console to give a command to set your heir?

LMAO Ituralde, you have my utmost condolences! Though, to be fair, your game has kinda followed suit with what has historically happened in many cases with European nobility.

As for the game, I'd like to see two things occur, both of which I've posted in the feature wishlist thread:

    1. Give us the ability to change the faction heir, OR Make it modable so that the core game doesn't do that, but a flag or something in a config file will let us do so. Option 2 is the best imo, because it lets those who like the mechanic to stay as is, and gives those of us who want to be able to change it that option as well.

    2. Give us back the ability to assassinate our own generals/family members/named characters!!!

Well I guess the problem there is that we now have the ability to stack the assassins, spies and other agents with our armies/generals so the do not get to perform an action on them.

I miss using spies to put low loyalty generals on trial for treason...

I guess we have no need of using Diplomate to script generals of titles as there are no titles.

So all we need is CTRL-leftmouse or some kind of alt-click method.

Oh now you've done it! Don't get me started, I put both of those suggestions in the feature wishlist thread awhile back. *Really* miss those and the others that added those extra dimensions of control and interaction over the named characters. The new RTW/M2TW engine has so much potential and thinking about MTW-type features in M2TW always sounded so cool! Let's hope that the clamoring masses can help change CA's mind about not including those.

King Gile seems to be holding on to sanity so far, and as I have stated above there seems to be some reverse kind of logic going on, taking the youngest instead of the eldest but only from the grandfathers children, instead of the fathers.

Actually the alt-click functionality is in the game... when you hold alt (might be ctrl, can't remember) it changes to the dagger icon...

But it still won't let you give the kill order on your own people.

I have to wonder if the faction heir selection process is anything other than Random. In my Turkish campaigns I'd often get faction heirs 20-30 years older than my faction leader, they would routinely die long before he would. I had a 16 year old Sultan at one point with a 43 year old faction heir. It doesn't seem to follow primogeniture or royal bloodlines, or any kind of sanity. I really wonder what the underlying processes are for this system.

The future of your kingdom rests with someone called "Prince Henry the Mad". May God help you.

I have for the first time been trying to control my family tree. after killing off multiple rulers and heirs on suicide missions I have come to the conclusion that there is no recognisable logic to who becomes heir.

e.g I kill off an heir who has brothers - does one of his brothers become heir? no it jumps to another branch of the family tree

and significantly it doesnt seem to follow age - eg it is not always the eldest male.

Something equivalant to Russian Roulette, it would appear.
