Chapter 1: The rise of a new army

The crack of the door as it swung open broke the silence of the morning's heat.

"Get up," grunted one of the men that stepped inside. Groggily I stood up obeying the command. My former military days no doubt. A taller, more dressed man stepped inside the wooden door frame.

"You have been conscripted in to the Basileis army to fight against the enemy of the country," he said with a sharp crisp voice that could only be from an officer.

"I have done my years in the army though," I protested still half-asleep. My wife stepped into the room. She had always waken up early than me to do the chores before the morning heat came.

"What is it Demetrios," she questioned looking over the two men that had entered our house.

"Nothing," I muttered under my breath, "go back to your work."
She left the room but I knew that she was still in ear range of our conversation. "I have served my years in the army," I repeated again this time more defiantly.

"The Basileis has ordered you to rejoin the army," ordered the officer again. I was starting to get uneasy. Why did the Basileis want me to join the army so bad? He had never introduced conscription before.

"You have five minutes to comply or we will be forced to us drastic measures," re-grunted the soldier in the background. I stood there dumbfounded on what to do. I did not want to leave my home again but they seemed to be following on orders from the highest sector of the government.

"No," I stated bluntly, "No I will not go."

"This is your last chance, you can join the army willingly or be forced to."

"You heard me, no I will not go!" The soldier from the background lunged at me. Stepped out of the way and hit his helmet. I could tell that his helmet was to big for him because it rang so much that it knocked him out. The officer just stood there staring at me. "Well are you going to make me or not," I said defiantly. He just locked eyes with me and said nothing. I noise came from behind me. I looked over my shoulder and the soldier on the ground started to get up. Before I could turn my head a sharp crack came from my head and before I blacked out I heard, "Hope you enjoy your Pantodapoi unit."

Looks good, but I've got one question: was the leader of the Ptolemaioi called Pharaoh? Because I thought they were Basileis (Kings). I could be making a mistake though.

    Depends on who's calling him.

    For the Native Egyptians: Pharaoh.
For the Greeks, and probably the Mercs as well: Basileus (King). Or Basileu when someone is talking to him.

Great start, can't wait for your first battle! I wonder why the Pharaoh is so desperate for men (It's the grey death, isn't it?)

    Possibly
Argh... I'm not used to big countries off the bat. I'm more used to like Makedonia or Romani. Few provinces but good ones. This will prove to be intresting.

Chapter 2: March of the nations

"Sir, Pantodapoi Demetrois reporting for training!" I shouted. "You will speak when spoken to you maggot," screamed the officer in charge, spittle flying from his mouth. I wiped the spit from my face before his large calloused hand smacked my in the cheek spinning me to the ground. Two other men lifted me up after the officer had gone.

"My name is Alexander," said the one with long black hair and darker skin.

"My name is Phillip," replied the other one. He was shorter, fairer, and was quieter than Alexander. I groaned from the swelling on my cheek. "Don't worry about that he does that to everyone," uttered Phillip, "don't ever think about hitting him back though he is the Basitlues son."

"How long have you been here," I questioned Alexander.

"About several weeks," replied Alexander, "Phillip has only been here four but he knows what to do and what not to do." Alexander looked around and leaned in and wispered "I have heard about the Bastilues declaring war on the Selucid Empire. This is not a fight I would want to be a part of." He leaned back and let out a long sigh. He scanned me with his eyes. "Are you Greek?" he asked me.

    "Yes," I replied sheepishly.

"Great Ares," he exclaimed, "why are you in a Pantodapoi regiment?"

"Well," I started but the officer came back and looked at me. A horn player stood beside him and let out a long blare from the horn. Everyone in the camp assembled at him.

"You disgraces to the empire have been choosen to attack a rebel settlement outside of our borders. You are to support the Phalanx's at all costs. You can be replaced they cannot. You are all here because you have dont wrong in your past but if you survive this there may be hope for you in our society in the future. This will be a long march across the desert and many of you will not make it but that is not of consquence. You may bring one jar of water each. Anymore and they will be all poured out."

With that we all marched towards the gate of our camp awaiting the battle that was about to come

It's a cool idea to choose the point of view of one of the weakest, cheapest units. By all means continue.

    This is just a preview:

Chapter Three: Primo Macto (Part One)

We besieged a settlement after a long march and a winter spent in a camp. This settlement did not want to join our Bastilus' Empire. They longed to be free and do as they wish.

The cool breeze swept across the plains before the city.

    "You ready Demetrios," wispered Alexander.

"Not sure, I haven't been trained much," I replied in a dry humor way.

"All you need to do is stand behind that shield and stab with that spear," he joked.

All eyes faced forward as we watched the rebels set up infront of us. They had two units of javalin horses. I could faintly make out the sound of arabic being spoken but I couldnt understand what they were saying.

"Watch out for them," Phillip said pointing towards the horses who were trying to hide the towns milita behind them. Another breeze swept across chilling everyone to the bone. A hush came over the crowd as our leader stepped forth.

"Many of you know that I am the Bastilus's son," he started, "but only some of you know that I am acutally the Bastilus!" A giant hush came over the crowd. The pain in my cheek came back and I thought how he hit me. "Over there stand the overly proud rebels! They will be your first test on the road of many! Some of you may not make it. Maybe even myself but remember that if you conquer fear you will conquer death! I am not one who will bow to the Selucid Empire and their petty allies. I am one who will stand up and fight for freedom!!!" A loud roar came from the crowd behind me as I just stared up in awe. Here was a demi-god right infront of me so close I could touch him. I felt sorry for the people in the city for they could fear us but have no where to run. "For Glory!" cried our king and with that the battle of the city was on.

They wasted no time coming at us. Our brothers and counterparts were sent after us first. A mirror image of what was about to happen to us. Luckly for me the Bastilus decided to sent the other unit towards them to cut them off.

"Looks like luck is on our side, eh Demetrios," laughed Alexander. I chuckled nervousily. A heavy sigh came from beside me. It was Phillip.

"What's a matter Phillip," joked Alexander, "itching for a fight?"

"No," he snapped back, "I just miss my wife and my son." Alexander and I just stood there not know what to say next.

Before we could say anything back the Bastilus sent our only calvary regiment to aid the others. The phalanxs just stood there waiting for an order than never came. The calvary failed against the mass spear wall presented by the enemy. Horse after horse fell against metal. The blood shed was horrific.

"What madness is this?" I heard someone say.
"We are not going to survive!" Someone else shouted. The phalanxs just stood there saying nothing. Not moving, not even blinking.

The Bastilus could see that everyone was cowering and not willing to go any further. He did not know what to do. He knew if one man would flee everyone would follow him.

"What are you going to do," I wispered to Alexander.
"I don't know," he said with a quiver in his voice.
"I know I am going to get out of here as soon as I can," cried Phillip.
"Hush," Alexander semi-shouted at Phillip. That quieted him down quick. The Bastilus seeing no other option looking at us threw himself in to the battle trying to show us that even he himself was not afraid to die. We were all so amazed at his self sacrafice that my regiment with my lead threw ourselves at the other enemy trying to charge him.

It would be interesting if in the end Demetrios regained his honour and was made a personal bodyguard of the Basilleus or somthing to that extent.
