Hi, Total Warriors.
I've loved TW since MTW1. I played it for months.
Months, I tell you!
But I was disheartened by MTW2 and RTW. They made the game more complex without summarizing it well (which towns are doing well and why, and how your generals are doing). I didn't even try ETW or NTW when they didn't get uber-glowing reviews. But I really needed a TW fix, and leapt for TWS2 when it got raves.
I really like TWS2 as a "TW lite". There is a clear summary of generals' stats (and are overall much simpler), and the map is small enough that you don't run into vast numbers of micro-decisions.
If there is one thing I would like the TW series to improve, it's how it could really use a Civilization-style awake/asleep cycling list for units and towns (see post 34 and especially 38 here for more info). In my mind, simple micro-management reductions like this cost pennies to program versus all the time sunk into game mechanics, historical accuracy, etc. Witness the Caesar games which steadfastly refused to consider bold improvements to their interface (a.k.a. micromanagement reduction) but instead just tossed out new expansions with the same old tired interface ... I really wish TW would take a hint from Civ.
With that said, it's also clear that few developers have ever tried what Creative has done, and done well: mixing a strategic map with a battlefield - and all that with an eye toward historical accuracy, to boot.
Three cheers for Creative Games!
