There are limits to RP - you can't kick a guy out of the diplomacy thread for IC reasons - he needs to be here in order to play the game.

So is it true, has Constantinople been handed over to the Venetians? If so, i will speak to them bout my offer. Surely the Doge of Venice doesn't want to provoke further conflict in the region, I offer a peaceful solution that should give you some amount of profit as well. What say you?
The Saracen would only laugh.
Just due to I agree with the most powerful christian country does not mean that I am an enemy to all. The Kingdom of Franks are right, And We will make sure that his words, may it be true. Will be the path of the days to come.
Sadly, You mock yourself now, Calling yourself a diplomat when you have done real no good. Making idiotic ideas about how we should just "Give up" and leave. Or else the mighty peasant army of Germany will come and spend many years of traveling, of which it will already be a Venecian City. You are the sole purpose of splitting your "Community" apart. You are a perfect example of a christian kingdom who wants more power in the court over the Franks in their own courts. We advise the German people to stay out and not try to re-open a settled issue at hand.
With the current success at the kievan rus diplomat now, We can not comment, This is up to mainly the Current powers, Kingdom of Franks, Venice, and Seljuks.
lol, yeah right. As it is, I've only said no to a few of you, I have been 100% co-opertive with the Kingdom of franks (The court's belong to france.) How would you kill the saracen, the guest of the King of the Franks? See, If you were to try to RP that, you, the representive of germany who enjoys declaring war on small merchant countries, would of been killed first by king's guard by trying to assassinate not just a representive, but the representive of the most powerful and largest kingdom. Yea... ok. =p

The Magyar stands again.
I must again disagree with the Saracen.
The Turkish flag still flies over Constantinople, regardless of what has been agreed in principle between France and Egypt.
No Venetians have yet set foot in the city - the Turks are the ones to negotiate with, as they are in possession.
The Saracen would only sigh.
The Turkish Diplomats need time to reach Venetian Grounds, They have announced it some time ago if you did not hear his statement.
The Duke takes a minute or so to fully remove his palm from his face, which has been stuck there for at least a few hours. Then he stands to speak.
"You, sirs... and I mean ALL of you... have succeeded in turning a very small issue into a great and controversial conflict, in which every party has become subject to slander and insult. You may congratulate yourselves on this effort.
But as for myself, I refuse to be part of it. I refuse to bring Venice into the base argument that this council has devolved into, and I resent the falsehoods that have been spread about my nation, especially when I do not retaliate.
The Turk is currently in control of Constantinople. What they choose to do with it is entirely up to the wisdom of their Sultan. Should they choose not to place the Queen of Cities under our protection, so be it. Should they decide to sell it to the Rus of Kiev, so be it as well. The Venetians have no authority over the city at this given time, and will not press the Turk to honor our agreement, as it was, like all treaties, subject to change and whim. If the Seljuk Sultan still wishes to give us the city, we will happily oblige, but we are content either way.
Venice is a most serene Republic; it does not want war with the Byzantines, nor with the Rus, nor with the Seljuks; it does not wish for any ill will between it and the Magyar King our noble ally; the negotiations we make are in the name of peace, and we will not negotiate in the name of war. Keep this in mind the next time idle threats are to be thrown about."
The Duke leaves the council to take a break, not looking behind him once.

I, Sir Ulricus Dives vom Hamburg, do not threaten an Egyptian ambassador by death, but I might request the Franks for a more noble one to take his place. I do not say Egypt should not be represented here, I merely state that it should not be represented by you who has broken most law of etiquette during the time you were here. You have repeatedly mocked the feudal system, armed forces and nobility of all european leaders.
And stop making false statement Muslems, I have never splitted any community apart. I have simply, like all Christians nations in this court, refused to acknowledge Venitians claims which included the Papal States itself and for that Venice attacked me which united most Christian nations against it. It is Venice who has splitted Europe apart.
Moreover, I accepted a truce in part brokered by your nation which saved Venice from utter destruction from me, from France, from Sicily, from England, and from the East Roman Empire. And instead of acknowledging my propensity for peace against all odds, and for you feeling respectable for your nations bartering such a treaty, you start making stupid remarks that I declared war on Venice and that I, not Venice, is a war-monger; you should choose your words, and your allies better.

We thank the Venetian for his resonable words. While Constantinople may simply be a great city to you, it is the center of my peoples religion as well and thus worth a great deal more to us. war has never been our aim and we are glad to see that Venice is also eager to follow this course now. We now simply wait for word from the Turkish ambassador as to our offer. And be assured, we do not want war, we simply cannot bear to see Constantinople under the rule of a foreign religion. Of course, we are sure that you Muslims would not destroy its relics or persecute its people, but we must be cautions and retain our great cities, as you must Mecca, Jerusalem, and other such places.

The Roman ambassador smiles as the Duke of Bologna says the words "most serene Republic".
The Saracen would laugh.
It is a shame, Such small, weak germans won't have a say at this due to the mai-...
Another Saracen would enter the court, with escorts that had no swords in their sheaths. This one would be much older.
Alhanzi!!! You are now dismissed from this court, the Caliph has received a letter from the... He would look down to read scroll.. The Holy... Roman Empire?... Since when do they call The remains of the Roman Empire holy!?... Oh well, it is not for me to judge... any ways, These people have sent a very bad letter to our ruler of how you are ruining our Relation Ships with different nations that we do not even know about!, The Caliph wishes to re-position you to the lands of... He would look down again... South of the Nile river, You will be be overseeing the diplomatic relations with the African Tribes! So be-gone!
The Saracen Diplomat (Who's name was finally reviled.) wouldn't leave, a second goes by and the escorts drag the old one out, slamming the door behind. The Old man would sigh... and then look to the audience.
Greetings Fellow Nobles, Diplomats, Rulers, and Dukes. I am the Caliph's Former Governor of the Coastal city of Alexandria. The Caliph has replaced me so that his nephew could obtain this title, I see no objection to this. Please let it be known that I am not apart of the Royal line of the Great Caliph, But I am a man of high status and have done many good deeds for one of the more advanced cities in the Al-Quds Empire. The Caliph has chosen me since I have recently been educated on the western culture, Since we have opened our trade to the Republic of Venice.
He would look down, and take a deep breath.
The Caliph regrets sending the rather dogmatic inexperienced diplomat to Paris. Though, Since we have lost over 20 diplomats in the tribal area in the past few years, We have run low on expendable diplomats, and the fact that the caliph has been receiving complaints about this.
OOC:
I was bored with acting like a all mockey like, so time to kill him off... XD

He would put away the scroll and look up.
On a more personal note now, I would be most pleased if you would so kindly call me Quittiben Al-Mezzehan. Quittiben is fine enough, I won't burden you to say my full name over and over. We are here for the our Caliph's benefits, as well as your benefits. Thank you, and sorry for my intrusion.

The Magyar Joszef is busy eating a large plate of bread and cheese, cramming huge hunks of the loaf into his mouth at once and washing it down with long drafts from a wineskin that lays on the table in front of him dripping claret onto the stones. He looks up and through a mouthful of cheese and wine says
Welcome.....Quittiben? And share a drink with me if you will.
The roman diplomat rises while the new fatimid ambassador searches for his seat.
Our two nations are at war Quittiben Al-Mezzehan, still I will greet you with all the honesty I have to spare. Please excuse me with my rudeness but I am weary of all these negociations that were going nowhere... I hope your new coming will mark a better future for both of us.

Again, it is very flattering to hear and see the interest by foreign nations in our affairs. Thank you!
Regarding the matters at hand, we will not purchase Smyrna and Dardanellia. They are to be handed over to the Seljuk Sultanate of Konya if peace is to be reached. Otherwise, our valiant troops will liberate them the coming seasons.
Constantinople is clearly a thorn in many nation's eyes. Yes, it is true that we have agreed to hand the city over to Venetian control. However, if this move will spark hostisilty from allies of the Romans, we are willing to renegotiate the city's fate. It won't be cheap however. You are welcome to present your offers. Until I get a good offer from any of the Roman allies, most notably the Rus, I will stick to my former deal with the Venetians.

The King has yet again left the court for a tour of his possessions in Flanders. After a ushed conversation with a courrier, Archbishop Étienne de Reims addresses the court:
His Majesty King Philippe would like all members of this council to take note that he will view with great displeasure war brought to his doorstep by any power, great or small, near or distant, friend or rival. The King will not hesitate to order his troops to intervene in any and all conflicts that put the interests of his Crown and Realm at risk.
Those who are particularly concerned have already been made aware of the specifics but the warning stands for all to heed. We will brook no exceptions, however justified.

Rus, we thank you for you generous offer regarding Konstantiniyye, and will to solve this diplomatically. However, we consider the Venetian deal more profitable overall. The necessary papers have been handed to the Doge himself in Venice, and await his signature.
The war continues. The massive Roman forces gathering around the Aegean forced us to further offensive action. Their threats towards Konstantiyye under Venetian rule cannot be ignored. Therefore, the stronghold of Adrianople has been occupied by Seljuk troops.
The doors would open, and a few scrolls would come the way of Quittiben. He would shake his head and gets ready to announce.
Attention. The Royal Diplomat from Alexandria, a well scholar that has spent many years learning the western culture, and learned the languages of English, French, Spanish, and Latin, is now Dead. He died along the routs of Italy. He was one of our best diplomats, and the Caliph is furious. He demands who was responsible for taking a life of a man of peace and trade. My most noble caliph assumes it was the Sicilians, though, he was near Holy Roman Empire and Venetian grounds as well.
Though, My Caliph blames the Sicilians on this matter... Why? The Diplomat boats carrying the diplomat were surrounded by Sicilian vessels. we spotted Sicilian troops in Malta waiting to board our ships. The Caliph has ordered the western expansion army to take Palermo, and they did, how weakly defended the place is, but has occupied and not destroyed any buildings, If the Sicilians do not listen to our demands, We will destroy... or sell Palermo to any catholic nation that has interest of Silica's capital.
Quittiben would look down at a different scroll.
The Word of the Seljuk's needing aid has been recieved, and the Holy Navy (20+ boats) and Armies (3 and half stacks) of Al-quds have landed in Eastern Roman Empire lands, They have Taken Athens and Smyrna. Our only comment to this is that we demand that the Romans surrender their cause to the Seljuk Turks. We can not risk the fact of the Romans invading the Seljuk turks, or the Venice republic of which will be the owner of the greatest city on earth.
Quittiben looks like he is just about to be done, but then another scroll falls out, he sighs and picks up the last scroll.
Hopefully, last but not least. The Caliph continues on his conquest to conquer all of Arabia. of which, the Caliph's body guard leave's Baghdad, to the next major rebel city, in hopes to claim that for us.
For any diplomacy, news, or treaty, please contact me in public or in private, We will be expecting the Sicilians to start making a proposal of their capital returned to them unharmed.
Quittiben would sit down.

This is utterly unacceptable. We see that the Turks have little real interest in peace seeing as they have refused our offers and continued their aggression against our roman allies. But peace may still be preserved, please reconsider our offer about Constantinople, if it is refused again we have little choice but to join the war on our allies side. To the Al Quds, we see through your thinly veiled excuse for war. You have been a hostile force from the start and we can no longer negotiate with you.
As I recall, the Fatimids have promised not to intervene in the Romano-Turk war unless my allies bust in themselves. I haven't seen any of my allies military corps yet, so tell my why you have invaded my lands. It seems that the turkeys do not need your help as they ventured into my land, even if we had emptied anatolia of our military troops.
Your military might be mighty, but you people have no respect, no honor, and no integrity. Even if we fall here, it will be remembered throughout the ages, and it will be written in history books that muslems are nothing more than wretched bandits.
The Caliph is quite upset about the assassinations of diplomats. We demand who ever killed off our men to come foward. Until some one does, We will presume it was one of the powers who are harassing Muslim powers.
Now face the facts. You are outnumbered, We have told you the very reason. If any thing you should blame your neighbors. You should be trying to make who ever committed such a murder to confess, or was it yourself? Either way, Declare peace with the Turks, and the Al-Quds will pull out. Stand and fight, you will be foolish and not last more than a year, As we speak, Cornith castle is very weakly defended, and could not possibly survive an assault.

Kievan, we have offered the Romans to surrender us Anatolia for peace. As far as I recall, that was denied. I also think it's obvious that you are desperate to get the city for yourself. We turned your offer down because the Venetians had a better offer, and are a better owner of the city than you. The Romans are out of the picture, since they are our enemies at the present time.
Roman, your cities in Anatolia were hardly surrendered, and your military presence around our borders was vast. I find it hard to believe you were ready to accept our peace deal.
The Caliph gives the cities that we have conquered in Anatolia to the Seljuk of Turks of no charge. We feel that the Romans have given this choice of peace, but averted. We will stop the push when the Turks tell us that they have achieved peace with the Romans. Until then, We are appreciated of the current bids in private of Palermo, but Sicily has not given us a peace offer yet.

Yes, I had recalled that the Egyptians had declared they would not join the Seljuk in Greece if the Byzantine allies did not join them in their battle against Seljuks. I might be misunderstanding but it seems Egypt is reneging on the word they have given in this very court. The Kaiser is not sure how to react to such a change in their politic.
The Count of Liritello observes a monent of silence at the chamber and takes the oportunity to make his announcements.
"The Sicily and Naples embassy welcomes the Diplomat Quittiben Al-Mezzehan to this council, it´s refreshing that the former representative was removed."
"Here, Roger sent news about the Tripoli bid, but this has no importance anymore, so lets see what´s next"
He readies the next scroll
"The County of Sicily and the Duchy of Apulia are now allied to the Roman Empire. We salute the Emperor representative"
"Well, about your recent announcements, I will send word to Roger. But he´s not likely to accept anyone buying his castle if it´s not to give it back to him. He´s not likely to trust the Caliphate about any propposal too, I wouldn't."
"About that diplomat. The Sicilian fleet did not attacked that fleet, nor does assassination is our style. We much rather prefer a field battle, but that seems to be a rare event lately."
"That´s it"
Gentlemen, We must be realistic now. Please understand that the Roman Empire is close to being completely destroyed, and the Silicians have just lost their capital. We have also just captured the largest military castle that the silicians own.
None of you are in the position to try to attempt an hostile attack. I will restate, My empire has armies that can easily outnumber any one in each of the position.
Now, the silicians have a chance of obtaining their capital un-harmed if they please just listen to us. As they have rudely attempted to steal our territory that we first announced of land claiments, first claimed, and announced that they were going to attack it.
This is our proposal, Since we are already getting bids up to 17,000 florins, It would be only fair to ask of the Kingdom of Sicily to do two simple things.
One, Is to give us 8,000 florins.
Two, The Kingdom of Sicily must close off the ports (Destroy) all ports in their empire for one and half years. (time it takes to rebuild the port.) Though it's your choice of re-opening. Please note if ANY hostile attempts will cost you the castle, the Castle will be burned down. and the lost of your greatest military production facility.
On side note, the kingdoms who wish to buy it. You simply have to double the current price that the Sicily offers. All of this will be dicussed in private chat, as the Franks have prohibited us to let it be publicly known in the court house, as the court house is not a auction house.
This is all, please be smart, and let's keep this peaceful, and non destructive
"Sure...I shall send your proposal to Roger. But he and Mark will never accept it. Go ahead and kill then both...maybe then Prince Simon will accept it. But then...he might not. He could grow up a spine after you kill his father. Who knows?" *schrugs*
"...dont look to me like that Sigrid, that boy pales after seeing blood, it´shamefull".
The Duke of Ancona's face seems to be a portrait of exasperation.
"Sirs, I do believe this council was put together so that all of our nations might have peace? Why, then, are we all starting wars with each other? I truly hope that clearer heads will prevail in every one of these recent conflicts, and I wish it to be known that Venice is in sharp dissapproval of the Saracens' policy of putting Sicily to the sword and asking questions later. It seems the whole diplomat incident had a gross overreaction... for one thing, you do not even know if it was the Sicilians that did it!
I am unsure of how much longer any words will be of use in this council... because soon it seems swords will be the only negotiations of any merit!"
He sits, and begins to bang his head on the table repeatedly.
The Caliph has tried to use words many times, what did it do us? We need to show that we will act to treachery. As this is getting out of hand... Still no confession.
In the noisy court, no one ever saw the tiny messenger come and go. All they saw, was the Roman diplomat, scroll in hand, tears on the cheek. As the court quiet down to observe him, he rises, take a deep breath but coughs violently and leans on the table to keep his balance. Once the coughing stops, he closes his eyes before speaking:
These are grim times indeed. The proud romans have been attacked by enemies who are bent to destroy us. We have tried to reason with them, but to no avail. Even now, a ceasefire has been sent to them, in exchange of Dardanellia, the castle they so much want. But we are not stupid, they are as likely to accept this proposal as a chicken to eat a bull.
At least, before we are exterminated, for the outcome seems almost certain... the roman people will be happy to know that...
He stops fora brief moment, not able to keep from sobbing.
They will be happy to hear that the Roman Empire managed to keep hold of their beloved city once again, even if it is just for a brief instant.......
The roman diplomat now clearly cries in front of the court. It is visible that he tries to retain his dignity, but it is simply too much for him. The Venitian diplomat, rises to argue but he is cut short by the Roman who miraculously regained his composure.
Of course we reject your ownership of our Holy City. We also sunk your ships that were in route. They were in roman waters after all, and you didn't ask us for passage, and as we saw it, it was an aggression toward the Romans. You are the allies of the Fatimids after all.
The Duke of Ancona stands, his face turning a pale color.
"You, sir... are a most vile knave. My cousin was on one of the ships that you sunk! You have begun a war with us for absolutely no reason at all; when negotiations could have been made, you attempted none with us and went straight for the violent alternative! Not a single envoy was sent to the Venetian court in an attempt to negotiate for the city.
Before this day, Venice was a neutral party in the conflict. If you have sought to seal your own ruin, then you have done so admirably by assaulting us. Not only will you now be crushed by the Turks; you will have us to contend with. And with us, we bring along another friend...
As the time has now come, I invoke the defensive alliance pact signed with the Fatimid Empire. This agreement, signed some years ago, stated that if the Byzantine Empire was to attack either of our states, the other would join in the war. You had better start praying, Greek, for unless you can find some way to repay the loss of our city, our ships, and our royal family member, you will in all likelihood be crushed beneath our might."
The Duke seats himself, awaiting the Saracen's supporting words.
Quittiben would raise his brow, and look through his notes and books.
Yes... The Venecian Diplomat is right. We have had a defensive trade alliance for some time now. Since the Romans attacked out neutral ally. All armies of the Caliphate must respond to this, and also the Navy of Al-Qud will be coming to escort our 3 armies to your cities... Make peace now with Venice or be destroyed.
The Roman Diplomat turns to his servant and nods. The servant opens one of his bags and brings out a small bottle of home made wine with no label on it. As Angelus speaks to the court, his servant pours the wine in one of the cups in front of his master.
My dear Venicians, how can you say that you bring a new friend? The Fatimids are ALREADY in my lands. The reason how dumb you people can be but also so successful eludes me. You also forget one simple thing. You seem to put all the blame on me, but I am not the one who takes the decisions. I am merly a messenger, and now I see how useless, how powerless my position is. We were trusting, we were honest, and therfore we were weak.
Angelus picks up his cup, now full of wine, and rises itup in the air.
This is the wine of defeat. As our imminent destruction approaches I drink it, proud to be a Roman. But if we must fall, by all means, before we do, we will screw you up!
With this last words, Angelus brings the cup to his mouth and drinks the whole cup. He then looks at the muslems with defiance and sits down, waiting...
Quittiben would only sigh.
I Really do not consider 1 general and 4 militia units taking over cities that peasants were defending are armies...
Thus for... The Caliphate of Al-Quds has no choice but to declare Total War onto Romans and any other empire in the region who attacks the Venecian Merchant Republic, and will take back any city that the Republic has lost to the Romans, and give it back to the Republic.

Venitian, by agreeing to take control of the Byzantines capitol you made yourself far from neutral, and this, followed by a transgression on there waters is justification for hostility. My people are greatly saddened by the losses of the Romans, and we hope that there is still some way for them to survive. It has now become very clear to us that the Muslim nations are hostile and have no aim other than to impose their rule over the peoples of the rest of the world. The Nation of Kieven Rus is closing its borders at this time to all but our great friends the Hungarians. Any agents or troops found in our territory will be removed by force. Diplomats may enter if we give express permission, finally, any ships found in the black sea will be regarded as hostile, with the division being drawn at the port of Constantinople.
The Duke rises to speak.
"I have no words left for the Byzantine. Let him come to me begging for peace, or remain forever silent.
As for the Rus': Do I smell a hypocrite? Did you not yourself vie for control of the Queen of Cities with the Turks? Presumably, after you had bought it, you would not have attacked the Seljuks or the Greeks, would you? No. You would have stayed neutral, and you would have called it as such. Do not pretend that I am some evil monster who deserves to be punished.
We did not sail through Byzantine waters, as, for one thing, no man rules over the seas. But even if you were to consider the sea surrounding Byzantine territory as theirs, we did not sail through that, either. We were close to Seljuk and Fatimid-held Anatolia, and whatever the Greek claims is a blatant lie.
If the Emperor wanted the city, he should have negotiated with me for it, as I have negotiated for it myself. Even if he had sent me an insulting offer and then attacked me after I refused- even THEN his actions would be better justified than what he has done here. He has attacked a neutral state, unprovoked, without attempt at a peaceful solution. His act of seizing the city and sinking our ships makes only him the aggressor!"

The Magyar Joszef looks disgusted at the Venetian's words, and glares darkly at him where he stands across the chamber, next to the Turkish and Saracen delegations.
Surely the Duke of Ancona is not so naive as to think that his Doge can purchase the ancient Byzantine capital, the city of Constantine himself, from the Turks who stole it without warning, and remain at peace with the Romans?
I do not think him so stupid.
Qui seme le vent recoltre la tempete, as they say in this country of our host.
As for the Saracens, they seem to think us all fools that we would believe their invasion of Greece in 'defence' of Venetian interests has not been long planned.
Indeed, they were so eager to put their plans into action that they could not even wait for the Romans to attack, but instead invaded without warning.
They have more than once tried to justify their aggression by mocking the light defences of the cities they have stolen. Like a robber who blames his act on the houseowner leaving the door open.
God and any right-minded men of this Court see straight through such false words.
He spits on the flagstones in front of him before sitting down in his chair, fixing the Saracen with a cold stare.
Quittiben would remain sitting, ignoring the Hugnarian's stare.
Ofcourse we were ready to defend our allies, As it is, The reccomendation of letting Venice control Constantinople was of his idea, and the Turkish party accepted, Venice then accepted, and since it is under our influence, We moved our armies to protect. And exactly the Romans attacked our dear trade alliance on our trading turf, We have to honor the alliance.
Face the facts. The Romans are beaten, they are trying to hurt every thing they can around them, They are an old empire, a declining empire. and soon to be, just part of one of the many books in alexandria and nothing more.

Joszef looks scornful.
Yes, it has all happened exactly as you planned it. You engineered it so that Rome would have no choice but to attack Venice, and you could make your invasion of Greece. The idea that you are defending Venice by doing so is laughable - you didn't even wait for the Romans to attack them!
Quittiben would only smile at the Hungarian.
You sound like you are convinced that We are the ones who caused this, But how many times will you ignore that the person who said that Venice should receive is none other than our very generous hosts. The Kingdom of Franks have suggested it, and we went through with it.....
Now look at what you are saying, Are you really trying to defy the Turkish and Al-quds.. or Are you trying to insult the Franks? You support War on a Catholic peaceful nation, A way how to prevent Islamic forces from entering europe. but yet.. You and your ally the Romans have done the exact opposite.. You know of our trade alliance. and yet... You attack Venice...
Look at yourself, You are supporting the opposite of what the great king of France proposed... The Great and Noble King of France Proposed that if A neutral Catholic nation, that has good ties between the Islamic powers, the Greatest city on earth would be saved, and a natural border would be formed.., But yet you greedy pigs defy him, and you attack our ally... You knew the consequences. Now the Romans will suffer until they give back what the Venetians want.

Quittiben would turn to the Merchant Diplomat.
Yes, Good Sir... How can you let yourself be used by the King of France to keep peace between us? Hopefully soon We will have the King of France's support for your cause... As it is, You were only doing of what you must to keep peace between the great powers. The King of France Specifically gave the Al-quds the ability to Defend the city as it is in our influence. We will not fail of a task that the King of France has given us. The City will be returned to the Venetians at all costs.

We saw no reason to accept your peace treaty, Roman, since your violence against our Venetian friends was so blatant. Dardanellia has instead been conquered by force, and it's Roman garrison has been put to the sword. Anatolia is now in Muslim hands, and as soon as the necessary formalities have been finalized Smyrna will be transferred from it's current Caliphate owners to the righteous governance of the Sultanate. All of Anatolia is now in faithful hands, and we have no reason to pursue the Romans further into Europe. We will however keep control of Adrianople.
I also wish to announce that the great Roman host that temporarily occupied Konstantiniyye, and threw out the city's benefactors from Venice, is no more. Not a single Roman soldier was left alive, and the Roman commanders were thrown to the dogs. Konstantiyye will now remain in the Sultanate's hands, until Venice has a sizable force in place, able to defend the city from greedy neighbours, or until the Sultan sees it fit to change the city's governance.
The border against our Magyar neighbour has been fortified, but we assure that this is purely for defensive purposes. We also wish to warn our Rus "friends". If they continue their aggressive position, we will take appropriate measures. The entire might of the Roman nation lies shattered and broken before our feet. The same fate awaits you if you decide to walk that path.
The Duke rises to speak.
"No. I will have nothing more to do with the cursed city of Constantinople, which has caused so many friendly nations to turn on us. That city is the cause of my cousin's death. The only way a Venetian will set foot in that city again is if I am sure that not a single nation in this council has an objection to it. We do not seek to anger anyone.
That being said, the Greeks can be sure that the death of my cousin will be avenged. They will pay dearly for their unprovoked and un-negotiated offense.
Noble Magyar: I hear your words, and they move me. However, you may be sure that the Republic of Venice has never been manipulated by another nation. Anything we have done has been in our own interest and through the decisions of my Doge. We never sought for conflict over Constantinople... the only reason we offered to govern it was to stop the conflict... and a lot of good that has done us!"
Quittiben would recieve a scroll and raise.
Attention! The Royal navy passing the waters have found a badly damaged Warship that belonged from the Merchant Republic of Venice. Onboard was one of the royal members of the Venice family. The Royal Navy tended and their ship will be alright now.
On the other news... The Royal armies have landed in Greece, taking the fortress of Cornith, and a settlement north of that. The Romans have no armies in site... They will be removed soon.
And last to note... The smallest army 7 armies, The Western Expansion army has been defeated by a superior force. Though, As the kings would say, The defeat was Heroric, They did every thing they could, being out numbered 2 to 1. the smallest army headed out to battle, and destroyed over 3/4ths of the army led by the King of Sicily, though.. they had too many men, the remaining group of men retreated back into the castle, and then burned down the castle's goods. All of the loot including the remaining of the men escaped and it was added to the Caliphate's treasury. With that said, The Silicians have paid the ulitmate price for obtaining their price.

Joszef glares once more at the Saracen.
The Venetians have just declared they will no longer claim Constantinople.
So their 'interests' no longer need defending - why then do the Caliph's armies continue their advance into Greece? And will they be withdrawn now they are no longer needed by their Venetian ally?
The Duke breathes an audible sigh of relief.
"My cousin yet lives? This is good news indeed.
I will still await a formal apology from the Greek Emperor before I think of signing any sort of peace treaty, however. I stand firm by the fact that their attack came without any beforehand attempt at negotiation and is so considered unprovoked."
Oh Venitians... I could, if I would, offer you money, but our treasury is empty and our debts are growing. I could also offer you land, but then there would be no place for romans to live.
So no, I will not offer you anything for peace.
The choice is yours to do what you will...
"Do not worry about money or land. I would like an apology and an admission that you made an unprovoked assault. Fortunately, you seem to have harmed no one after all, so no reparations need be made. I pity your current position in world politics.
If you will do this simple thing for me, then I will do as I can to rein in my ally the Saracen... but you must understand that I may not be able to control him- his Sultan's holdings are tenfold that of my Doge's. I would not like to see your state removed from the face of the earth."
These actions were done before the peace of the Romans and Venice. To the Hungarians, It is not about land, but just the fact that They went to war with the Venice is enough for the defensive alliiance to work. But with this said.
The Ayyubids have no more conflict with the Romans. and Will hault our advance. Consider this a Ceasefire, And technically we are still at war until the Romans declare peace with us as well.
If the Turks, feel no need to push their troops further, the Al-Quds, to destroy us, and the Venitians to seek revenge, then the romans can themselves take rest and recall what remains of their soldiers, whatever peasants with forks they may be.
Gabrielus rises up from his chair, shambling. The roman diplomat looks very weak, and pale. He quicly asks for support from his servant, who swiftly runs up under his arm to keep him from falling.
I, Gabrielus Angelus, in the name of the Roman Empire, asks for forgiveness. Heavy sweat starts flow from his forehead. I... am sorry. I may have drank my...wine too soon... replacement is in route... May... we all finally find...peace...
The servant could not keep the man on his feet and so the big roman falls down on his chair. The servant calls for escorts, who come, pick the lifeless diplomat, and carry him away, out of the court. The servant now turns toward the court:
I beg pardon to the court for this event. My...former master has received from the last messenger, notice that he would be replaced. It seems that he could not bear the shame. If the court permits it, I will act as liaison until the replacement has arrived.

Ah, it is good to see that the Venitians have realized that their place is not here in the east. We are glad to see that agreements are being made between them and the Roman's and see no need to have any involvement in that matter ourselves. We are also glad to hear that the Turks have halted their advance, and wish to give them our assurances that we do not want war with them, only a peaceful settlement. As to the Caliphate's invasion of Greece, this is the last straw. We cannot let this stand and have no choice but to eject them from Greece by force of arms. If they are willing to return the Greek lands to the Romans and retreat from Greece we will halt our advance, but this must be done soon, or we will be there in force.

As for the invasion of Palermo by the Egyptians; we must warn them that by our alliance with Sicily, we will have to intervene if Egypt does not give the city back to Sicilian control.
We would like to say that the Silicians had to pay the ulitmate price for ignoring our demands. Their army is almost destroyed, and Palermo is nothing more than just walls, every thing in the inside is burned down. We offered them a fair 8,000 florins for it. but they declined, So we took over 14,000 in scraps from looting.
Also for the Romans, The Al-Quds will sign an official peacetreaty with you if you disband is what left of your navy. If you do this, We will not have any more problems. We are not asking for any money, and the disbanding of your navies will only bring you more income since you are not having to pay upkeep for them, Is this fair?

What of the territory you have captured in greece? Will that be returned to the Romans if they agree?
If the Romans want their territories back, They will be forced to sign a vassal treaty, with the including parts of the disbanding of their navy, and a small permanent tribute... and ofcourse a proper change of his empire's name... Only with that condition, will might agree.
Yet another messenger, yet another scroll. Andreas seems unsure if he should read it or not. As he he opens the scroll to read it, his expression changes from doubt, to surprise, to sadness. He looks up to the Fatimid.
It seems we are going to become your vassals Al-Quds. May I ask to speak to you privatly, so we can discuss the terms of surrender?
Quittiben would be delighted.
We are delighted that the Romans have agreed. We will start the Private negotaitons. at once.

Dear representatives of the nations. I spent several hours reading through the writings of the council and reported everything important to my lord. Here is his answer:
I, king Alfonso, the only remaining Christian ruler of Iberia, am deeply worried and sad about the rise of Islam. If my envoy have read the scripts carefully enough it appears to me that Christianity is on retreat at large and the Islamic wave of conquer is rolling again over the lands once claimed by Christianity.
I am deeply worried about the downfall of the Roman Empire in the East. Once a bastion of Christianity it is now a puppy of the Muslim rulers.
This once again has proven the aggressiveness of Islam and should be a warning to every Christian Ruler. Worries about the future of the Kingdom of Hungary are troubling my mind. Thinking about the fact that even the city of the great Constantine himself has been conquered is heart troubling and sad at the same time. How could the Christian rulers especially Eastern Christian rulers stand by idling while a Christian Kingdom fell? (Though it looks like as if the East Roman Emperor was lacking the skills that once enabled his ancestors to built up the bastion of Christianity the empire once was.) Unfortunately it right now looks to me that Eastern Christianity either not have the guts or the will to support Eastern Rome’s fight against aggressive and expansive Islam. Or has Islam risen to such power that even the united forces of Eastern Christianity did not – and still seem to not – have the necessary strength to prevent this from happening? That would be even more troubling than the lack of will or guts.
Now that what was rightful part of Eastern Christianity fell into the hands of heathens. (Though the elaborated plan to sell it to moneymaking, Muslim allied Venetians who even threatened if not conquered and killed brave Christian Warriros in the Levante was not much of a choice either.)
Also the situation in Sizilia and Southern Italia is heart troubling. The Fatimids are advancing! Considering the – although not openly proclaimed but appearing as already secretly negotiated – alliance between Islam and Venice to divide Christian Europe among them is a threat to every Christian! Christian Europe once again is in Danger!
Christian Nations have to stop talking and get to action!
If Christianity does not finally unify and rollback Islam there will be no hope left for any Christian Nation! We can not longer stand by idling listing to the fraudulent talking of “soly defensive positions” and “rightfully claim of Islam”. Although not crowned yet I urge the remaining strong Christian Nations to ally and take the sword! I especially call on the strong Western Christian Powers of the Franks and Normans who can field strong armies to take the sword and roll back Islam!
TO ARMS! TO ARMS! TO ARMS!
Quittiben would be outraged by the new arrival.
This man is Mad! We have finally solved our problems, but yet this man wishes to bring war again. The King of the Franks must stand by with his decisions, and must not be effected by one of the most radical king.
The largest of the Islam States requests for the leader of the catholic nations, the Kingdom of the Franks into privately negotiate to finish these conflicts before new ones start due to this.

The Magyar Joszef studiously ignores the new arrival, for the time being, turning instead to the ambassadors of the Caliph and the Basileos.
Would either of you kind gentlemen be so kind as to tell us the outcome of your negotiations? Will Caliphate forces be departing their positions in Greece? And has the Basileos agreed to become the vassal of Al-Quds and disband his navy?
If all goes to planning, yes. The Al-Quds will give most of greece back, and having one of the settlements to watch further progression, once the Romans have fully done their treaties, we will give them the last of the settlements.
The last settlement will also be given when the Silicians come to peace treaties with the Al-Qud Caliphate. Until then, We are at war. and will be forced to keep our front lines, on max alert.

Well well well well well well well my friends… lets see whether the Muslim factions will completely draw back from mainland Greece and Sicily and to which terms !!
I can already hear the voice of the Fatimid envoy… “Oh yes my beloved friends we dearly would like to leave our positions in Greece and on Sicily BUT… the Roman Empire is not paying his debts nor is the Sicilian King… they are not abandoning their navy…they are still holding offensive postions. ” bla bla bla…
If the Muslim factions will complete draw back from Greece and Sicily to reasonable terms I will kindly report this to my king but I doubt that the King of Sicily will see Palermo under his rule again as the Roman Emperor will surly not very soon move back into his palace in Constantinople.
Anyway my friends… the downfall of the Roman Empire and the weakening of the Kingdom of Sicily is a threat to mainland Europe! Fast striking across the Hellespont will be easy from now on as well as a swift attack on Italy and a fast assault on Rome. Thus the words of my king should be taken serious!
My Hungarian friend… you should be worried the most as your kingdom is the most likely next target of Muslim expansion. (And once Hungary and especially Bran fells mainland Europe is open like a meretrix in the Haram in Damaskus!)
Remember the words of my king fellow Christian friends!
How Dare do you call us by our old name, Our name is the Al-Qud Caliphate!
The Roman empire we have hope for, and will reply, and it is obvious that you now know that we do not hold Sicily any one. We ask of the Spanish kingdom to stop trying to seperate the faiths even more. The Hungarian King is a good friend of Seljuk Emprie, there for a friend of the Al-Quds.
We have more important wars to fight further in the east, but you have been keeping us with these nonsense politics of which you are scared of.

Paranoia and War-mongering dine with your King, I see. The Sultanate of Konya has merely defended it's Anatolian interests. My Sultan tried to solve the situation concerning your highly valued Konstantiniyye in ways suggested by Christian rulers, and it obviously didn't work. Adrianople has already been negotiated to the Hungarians, but Konstantiniyye will remain in our hands. It is best for the entire region.
And as for us being a threat to the Hungarians, we do not wish any further conflict. The Rus and Hungarians have both threatened to attack my nation, but these matters have been solved diplomatically. There is no need for a foolish Christian king, from far off lands with no knowledge of our lands, to tell us or our neighbours what to do. Peace has been reached, and you try to rip off the newly sown stitches?
*the Count of Loritello wakes up from his nap after Sigrid pokes him enouth*
Ahhh...yes...yes?
*Sigrid whispers to his ear*
Another Sarracen army at Sicily? Hmmm, Where? ....ahhh, ok ok.
*He adresses the room*
Errrmm...there are no Sarracen armies at Sicily, at least since the last weeks, Roger destroyed the army holding Palermo. I believe he´s rising more militias...wherever.
About another topic the County of Sicily supports the Leon and Castille King´s Catholic Alliance!
My thanks for the atention.
*Sigrid tryes to have the Count atention again with a scroll...he waves her away*
No...no...I am not troubling Roger with these sneaky proposals. Sink the fleet? Nay. The last time the Caliphate proposed anything her attacked us, so it´s pointless, he´s just buying time to rise another army.
... It seems that the Silician Diplomat is extremely slow in the head, considering that I have said that We have withdrawn from the Palermo Castle over four times. Though, As it is. If the Silicians don't come to the table of peace, We have no choice but to take him out, and replace him with another kingdom.
Though, The Kingdom of Sicily is doomed, they have no chance of rasing another army. As the castle was burned down to the ground after he was specifically warned not to besiege it. This was done directly by Sicilians assassinating our diplomats on his territory.
As it is, We have four armies in Greece, and we will not pull. Any further aggression shown by the Sicilians will be countered by the royal forces that invaded the Roman empire with ease. We can not pull back from greece until the Silicians agree to a peace treaty.

The slim Moorish diplomat has listened with great care to the debate on the floor, but does not comment until a document is delivered to him by a messenger.
Gentlemen of the court it is with great distress that I have heard these freshly hostile words from our Castillian neighbors. Firstly my Caliph would like to point out that the nation of Portugal is still peacefully extant in Iberia, or so our trade ships report, and there is no need for anti-Muslim hysteria or desperate claims about the state of Christianity here. For our part the, ahem, Moors bears our brothers no ill will at all, indeed we have sent away all our great armies from Iberia and maintain only the most minimal of garrisons. This belligerence concerns the Caliph greatly, but we pray still for peace.
...this being said, there is a matter of some concern to be addressed. A Spanish fleet has laid anchor just beyond the Cordoba docks. The Caliph has commanded that the Moorish ships nearby sail away so as not to antagonize our neighbors, but this seems a needlessly hostile act, especially in light of these most recent comments. The Moorish people officially request that the Castillian ships be withdrawn from our waters.
There was, at one time, a proposal for permanant ties between our people. I ask, publically, what is the state of this proposal now? If it has fallen through then we shall presume Valencia is once more an open city, no longer subject to the terms of our deal, and we announce our intent to expel the rebels now terrorizing the countryside there.
Peace be unto you great lords.
The elegant diplomat bows deeply before resuming his seat.

The Iberian envoy enters the hall and sits down. He is looking towards the Fatimid envoy:
Fatimid, my king doubts your desire for peace…
“…The Kingdom of Sicily is doomed…”
Those are your words and those words barely are words of peace…
though turning towards the whole ensembly
my lord is no hatemonger!
You have to understand him!
He was born in a land that once had been almost fully conquered by expansive Islam. Therefore he is deeply concerned about any Muslim expansion into the Christian Realm.
But as my king has stated his position and is not willing to be the scapegoat to justify any further Muslim aggression he will no longer raise his voice on this matter pro tempore. However no one ever dares to say that Christian Iberia did not warn about a further Islamic expansion.
Turning to the Moorish envoy:
Moorish Envoy - my king still is not in charge of his country. Therefore any activity currently taking place is not based on any of his decisions. Right now he is still residing in the Kingdom of the Franks waiting for their King.
Taking a deep breath:
You personally seem like a wise and peaceful man my heathen friend but you have to understand that the Christian people of Iberia and its leaders naturally mistrust their Muslim neighbours due to the happenings in the past.
However so far the Kingdom of Asturias is pleased with the seemingly peaceful behaviour you are displaying here.
Having said this he stands up turning to the whole assembly again:
Once again I have to remind everybody that my lord is not in charge of his kingdom so far and he is just commenting on the current developments taking place while residing in the land of the Franks. Hopefully the king of the Franks will arrive soon so my lord finally can return to his kingdom.
He turns to leave the hall. On his way out he stops by looking with amusement at the Fatimid envoy:
Fatimid – you are angry that I call you by the name of your forefathers? Did you not just change the name of your empire but also contemn the name of your own dynasty? Abi Talib and Fatima would be shaking their heads in disgust!
Starts laughing:
However…
Getting more serious again:
The conquering of the Holy City of Jerusalem by Islam has not been recognized by Christian Iberia since 638! Therefore we will not justify your conquest by naming your realm Caliphate of al-Quds.
He turns away and leaves the hall.
The Al-Qud Caliphate will ignore all statements made by the weak and pathetic Iberian Rebels. We hope the Franks will restore order to their mad ways before they start a bigger conflict.
They know nothing, and if foolish kings, emperors, and Caliphs listen to these barbaric rebels. It may spell the end of our very fragile state we have now. For that, We ask the Kingdom of Franks to please silence them, in any mean necessary before this gets out of hand.
Last but not least, We urge the Silicians to accept peace treaties, If they do not, and show more aggression, we will have to think of more ways how to control their methods..
The Caliph has been considering what the Noble King of Hungary has been requesting... and the caliph has come to a decision to agree with him, it is the best that the Al-Quds stay out of Europe, and we want to thank the Hungarians for convincing us. So... We wish to pull out. though... We worry about the safety of our armies, as the Roman Empire refused to agree, and now his navy is a huge threat to our forces pulling back. So...
This is a bold move for us to make, but we will try asking.... We need help from Catholic forces, The Merchant Empire of Venice, and the Noble Kingdom of Hungry to try to persuade these war countries to pull back. Also I propose a border that the catholic forces, and the Al-Qud empire will go.
We thank all of you for listening, We hope to await your response...

The hulking Joszef stares intently for a long moment at the Saracen...
....before draining his tankard of ale in one motion, slamming it down on the table with a crash and crossing the chamber to embrace the surprised diplomat in a powerful bear hug, lifting him off the ground in the process.
No sooner has the Saracen regained his footing than he is almost knocked to the ground by a powerful slap on the back from the overjoyed Magyar who, grinning broadly, says to him.
You see I knew you were a fine fellow after all! And not at all like everybody says you are! Of course you were persuaded by the clear thinking of my liege King Lazslo the Diplomat, who isn't?
He laughs uproariously, before finally taking a slightly more sombre tone.
Your master the Caliph has our word that as he leaves Greece we will not attempt to stop him, and we will do everything in our power to ensure his passage is unmolested.
We cannot, of course, speak for our allies the Romans who still remain exiles from their great and ancient city. While for the sake of their own survival we would advise them to make peace at this time, we will understand if they are not able to accept Turkish rule over Constantinople.
Quittiben would be trying to recover from the overhappy Hungarian man's excitment.
We hope they do not... Also, All areas of interest will be given to the Venice Empire, it is up to them to decide to sell / give away the lands. Also please note that the armies HAVE pulled back, all three major armies are on the very eastern tip of Iraklion
The Duke of Ancona stands, surprised, apparently having heard this last detail for the first time. He is not, however, displeased.
"Could you, sir Saracen, detail to me, either now or later in private, exactly which lands will be placed under my Doge's control? Whatever these lands may be, I do not intend to keep all of them- perhaps only a single base for easy access in the Mediterranean."
All of the Caliph's Invasion forces are now out of Greece. and now back onto Islamic lands of Turkey.
Please remember that ANY lands taken from Venice other than Diplomatic Treaty, Will bring back the caliph's forces into Greece, on behalf of the Defense treaty.
Also, We would like to enter diplomatic relations with the Hungarians, As we are now in trading range.
In other news, The Caliph of Al-Quds have run into Other Islamic nations, of which friendships are unsure, these are the Persian Shahs, and the Omani Imamate. We are unsure of what will soon will happen (IE I'm about to control all of Arabia and I have already entered into Persian lands... =D )

The Magyar delegation is missing one large, barrel-chested drunkard today. Rumours abound that he was last seen attempting to swim the Seine for a wager in the early hours of the morning after an evening spent carousing in the flesh-pots of Paris.
In his stead, the priest Stephen stands to address the Court.
While our noble King Lazslo will no doubt be pleased to hear of the Egyptian withdrawal, it is still of concern to us that the Caliph must retain a presence so close to our borders. With the strength and reach of the Egyptian navy, could his armies not withdraw further as a gesture of good faith?
We are most pleased to establish trade links with the Caliphate but cannot do business in good heart unless we are comfortable that an immediate invasion of our lands is neither planned nor possible.
Sadly we lack a diplomat - our King's royal daughter Adelhaide can be found at Rome, or we would be pleased to receive an Egyptian diplomat to formalise a trading deal.
OOC:
While I respect your right to keep troops close enough to defend your allies' territory from attack, I don't like it that you can strike at my lands without warning - please withdraw further so that you can reach the Venetian territories but not my lands in a single turn.

Word soon reached the court room of the Spanish king's death at the Moorish sultan's hands. The Spanish invaded Marukia with superior forces in hopes to claim back territory, he would be very wrong on the outcome, The Sultan of the Moors would be on boat heading toward. the very same area, having a slow foot soldier army that could not reach the city in time of the assault, the Sultan decided to have all of the horsemen including himself go toe to toe with the whole Spanish army. having an army that was not even 1/2 the size of the Spanish King's forces, The Spanish were not prepared to see an all horsemen on their flanks when assaulting the walls, This would cost the King of Spain his life.

During the long absence of King Philippe, the court room had become despondent. Few representatives ever paid attention to the on-goings of their peers and protocol had been lax to say the least. It was then a great surprise when, on a particularly slow wednesday afternoon, the doors to the court room opened with great commotion. Before even the first trumpet was able to wheeze a note or any courtier managed to get to his feet, the large, brutish form of Prince Louis thumbled down the central aisle and marched up to the throne, his over-ripe belly encased in solid plate armor.
Much like a commander adressing his troops, the prince barked at the bewildered assembly:
My father, the King, has been ill for a very long time and his rule has lost the vigor that made our foes tremble and our friends bask in awe at our grandeur. My father, though weakened, still lives and it is by his will that I shall take the reigns of our territories and govern them until he is fit to return to his royal duties.
Much has happened in his absence which requires immediate attention. The foolish crusade started by the Iberians against the Moors, Rome's call for the faithful to march upon Jerusalem and the excommunication of the Normans of England will all be answered to by the crown of the Franks. Be prepared for great things. The Franks will be everywhere!
With these words, he grunts an order to one of his squires who stays on the stairs by the throne, and marches out in a cacophony of steel and trumpet wails.

I have some news I find both disgusting and hilarious.
It appears that too the Franks a deal signed in good faith is something to be tossed aside at the slightest inconvenience. Louis is a brute with no regard for the honor he claim's he has.
It would appear that the good relations between the Normans and Franks have been for naught, as he has bluntly stated he intends to take ancestral Norman lands from our people
The Holy Roman Empire and all of Frances neighbors should beware, lest Louis decides to tear apart their diplomatic deals as well. I see no reason why a diplomat should reside in such a Treacherous house as this, so I take my leave. We shall talk further with our neighbors in their own personal courts.

The door opens.
A new faces limps into the courtyard.
Something has left its mark on him.
He stumbles into the middle of the hall looking into the faces of the remaining envoys.
III AAAM ALFONSO, Prince of Asturias, ONE OF THE ONLY TWO NOBLES WHO SURVIVED THE MASSACRE OF MURCIA - NEVER WILL IT BE FORGOTTEN!
He lowers his voice.
In these halls I am the representative to the new King of Christian Iberia, King Rodrigo I. – honoured he shall be.
In his name I proudly enlighten you that Christendom now seeks to end the occupation of the lands that rightfully belongs Christianity.
With the long absence of the Frankish King and the sudden disappearance of the Caliph of the West there was no sovereign to consider such a bold move. Thus my Lord had no choice but to try to seize an opportunity.
Even though our first attempt to relieve Iberia was repelled and cost the life of almost every men that joined that cause we will not yield!
THE SPIRIT OF PELAYO IS STRONG IN IBERIA!!
Here I stand full of pride telling you that every captured man refused to convert to Islam haughtily choosing death instead. Honoured shall they be!
Murcia now is an shinning example of Christianity!
He lowers his head and stands still for a while before he limps to his bank to rest.
He raises his voice again.
War is overspreading the Lands of Christianity. After a long period of peace the Realm of Europa now has fallen into Darkness.
The balance of power in the Lands of Europa has been shattered now that the Franks are visibly trying to force the Normans back into feud and vassalage.
Sad it is that Christianity once again is fighting each other instead of the Muslim heavens that are threatening Christendom more than ever.
The aggression of the Countship of Portugal had to be answered by my murdered King Alfonso.
The passage at arms against the Normans however is an unnecessary step into the wrong direction.
The enemy of Christianity is not residing in the Lands of Europa but in the Holy Land. That is where they have to be fought.
He lays back on his bank and takes a rest.
The Duke of Ancona stands to speak.
"It is truly a shame that so many kings have lost their way with the Pope. We hope they can reconcile themselves faster than the French can take their lands."
The Duke barely manages to stifle a chuckle under his breath. He then continues, with a more serious overtone.
"With that said, my business today is not with Christians, but with followers of Islam. I have received a message from a herald, claiming that our outpost in Tripolitania has fallen to the Moors. We would like an explanation from the Moorish diplomat for this... was it a deliberate attack, or could it have been a rebel insurrection? Either way, you may keep the outpost, but the Most Serene Republic would like a recompensation as well as a speedy peace deal, so that we may return to trading."
The Duke sits, awaiting an answer.

The Prince of Asturias is lying more than sitting on his bank. He still suffers from his wounds and needs the help of his anciallas to even get up.
Now standing firm and with a questioning look he is glancing at the remaining envoys.
Is there no Frankish envoy in these halls anymore? He pauses.
We still have not heard one word of explanation why the Franks started to punish their Norman neighbours.
As a rule this is non of my Lords business but taking the words of Prince Louis in mind who warned everyone about the Franks being everywhere my King honestly is concerned about where the Franks “are going to be” next. More than ever since my Lord like the Norman King has been banned from mother church. He pauses. An illegitimate ban as my Lord solely was answering the aggression of the Countship of Portugal.
His anciallas help him to sit down again.

The frankish squire stands, arms crossed, at the foot of the throne.
The Franks have not initiated any war or battle against any of their neighbors. The Normans however, refusing to recant their heretical beliefs and to heed the counsel of their liege whereas Normandy is concerned, seem very eager to trade blows with the King's army.
There is even words of a coalition of heathens bent on besieging our noble nation.
I am but a squire, I can transmit your words to my sire, Prince Louis. But I hear he is busy readying a crusade near Toulouse and will have little time for trivialities.
Is there anything specific you seek from my Lord?

The Prince of Asturias listened carefully to the words of the person who noticeably was speaking in the name of the ruler of the Franks.
There seem to be different opinions on the outbreak of the conflict between the Normans and the Franks… seemingly even on the fact whether there is a conflict going on at all. A look of lack of knowledge is on his face
Unfortunately the Norman delegation left this court so this high house will not get the chance to listen to another view on this matter. We might never find out what “slightest inconvenience” started this conflict if its not just a war of words at all…
What my Lord was seeking was enlightenment… but truth remains in the shadows more than ever…
The Prince of Asturias remains with an unsatisfied mind.

The squire looks at the Spaniard with slight confusion.
The root of this conflict is obvious. The Duke of Normandy, William, who took an oath of fealthy to King Philippe when he inherited his lands of Normandy, has left the bosom of the Most Holy Church. Can a King allow heretics to rule in his land and in his name? Prince Louis, in the absence of his father, will surely not tolerate such a stain on the crown's honor. But as for open warfare, none has been initiated, as far as I have been informed.
A nondescript man wearing lightly colored robes steps into the council chamber.
Greetings. There has been a change of advisors to the ruler of the Fatimid Caliphate. As a result I will be replacing my nation's former delegate. We wish to reassure our friends that we will honor any agreements made by the earlier delegate. We also want to extend our goodwill and friendship to any nations who may have had strained relationships with the Caliphate up until now.

Greetings, I hope you bring new policies by your nation, unlike the last replacement we had. I hope you will see the wisdom in remaining in the south and not attacking Christian neighbors without provocation as your people have in the past. As long as you abide by this my people will gladly remain in peace with you and yours.
The Saracen diplomat bows in return.
We offer no comment on the past actions of prior delegates but I assure all that the Sultan has instructed me to make trade, not war, our main priority. As long as none behaves aggressively towards us, we will return the favor.
I would like to apologize in advance for any errors I make in the near future while speaking here. I am still going through the negotiations made here by my predecessor and will need some time to catch up completely.

Reflecting the words of the Frankish squire the Prince of Asturias now seem to know what policy the Kingdom of the Franks is pursuing…
Resting on his bank he notices the new Muslim envoy and his talk of Love and Peace.
Turning towards him:
I want to welcome you too my heathen friend!
I cant bow down before you even if I wanted to as I still suffer from wounds inflicted on me by Muslim hand during the massacre of Murcia that I only just could escape alive.
Taking an apple from the nearby board from the hand of one of his ancillas. Vigorously biting into it:
Lets see what you bring to the table…
Allowing Christendom to rule the Holy City of Jerusalem would be a bold sign of your willingness to respect Christianity more than the former Caliph did.
Leaning back on his bank with relish eating his apple.
An incredulous look briefly crosses the Fatimid diplomat's face before swiftly changing to mirth.
A wonderful joke my friend, to suggest that we give away the city that was the site of Muhammad ascended to heaven to converse with the prophets, even leaving alone the fact that the city is our capital.
We will gladly protect the routes of pilgrims of all faiths that desire to visit Al-Quds, something we are far more capable of than any European state that would ahve difficulty keeping military forces in the area supplied.
If you are truly interested in friendship we will gladly sign a treaty of trade rights.

He is laughing out loud on his bank:
Well my heathen friend I wasnt expecting anything else really… still having a big grin on his face.
He now sits up straight on his bank getting more serious:
But your empire already rules over the most holy and the most second holy sites of Islam whereas the most holy place of Christendom is in the hands of Muslims. Imagine Mecca and Medina being ruled by Christians…
Resignation fills his voice:
The Holy City of Jerusalem will always be a bone of contention... the next Pope already could call on all Christians to liberate the Holy Sepulchre…
Philosophically:
Dont you think an everlasting generously gesture of allowing Christendom to govern its most holy place would be a better solution than any upcoming war that only would cost thousands of innocent lives and would set on fire the entire Levante? It is just one place, no other cities, no castles around it. Only on Noble and a garrison of solely pilgrims and peasants, no knights neither on horse nor on feet… One city ruled by the legitimate Christian leader of the West. Anointed and coronated by the Pope.
The new Caliph would portray himself to the known and unknown world as the most wise and generous ruler of Islam since the Prophet himself – praised be his name. Your Caliph legitimately would earn his place in history among the greatest of all times and would truly merit to be welcomed by Mohammed himself in heaven – praised be his name.

Thirty proud trumpets echo through the Grande Salle, heralding the return of the King. As the attending nobles and diplomats rise to welcome the Frankish monarch, Philippe enters through an honor guard, his son, Louis, and the Archbishop of Reims helping him make his way to the throne.
Philippe has changed much in the last two years. His once strong frame is now wizened and life has drained from his face, leaving his features ashen and sickly. Even his attire, once silk and jewels, has been replaced with a simple gray garb, and only the crown reminds his audience that he is the great King of the Franks. Sweat breaks up on his forehead as he lowers himself painfully onto the throne, his white knuckles straining on the arms of his seat.
He pauses just moment, head bent, his eyes closed but agitated. To the restless crowd, it seems an eternity. A hushed rumor creeps to the four corners of the Grande Salle, quickly replaced with a tense silence.
The King has raised his hand, slowly, and purposefully his head rises level to the assembled dignitaries. Philippe’s eyes belie an incredible strength that resonates with force through his words:
Caen has fallen, thanks to the brave deeds of our knights and the selfless heroics of the Comte de Clermont. The heresy that has befallen our wayward vassal, the Duke of Normandy, has been routed from our lands and this is the will of the Lord. We dearly hope that his majesty, Lord William, who has been in intense negotiations with the Holy Father will soon be able to reconcile with the Church. Messengers were already dispatched to London to settle all matters between the Franks and the Normans for beyond restoring the true faith to our lands, we have no wish to fight our Norman brothers or trouble their English subjects’ peace.
But the Normans of England are not the only people in Christian Europe to have disregarded their faith. The Crowns of Denmark, Leon and Castile have also been chastised severely by Rome and rumors abound of war between Christian princes. All the while, our eastern brothers are dispossessed of their lands and our most holy faith is mocked in its most holy cities.
God has sent me a warning.
Slightly, a shrill has crept in the King’s voice.
To pursue heresy in our homes is not enough! Our sins burden our souls and the souls of our people! We have been complacent while our enemies gnawed at the tenets of our faith and exploited our weaknesses for far too long. The Franks have always been the chosen defenders of the Holy Church and for our lack of piety and virtue I bear the weight of the Almighty’s judgement.
Philippe affixes the courtiers with a searing gaze, his eyes bloodshot, his every muscle straining his weakened frame.
The time has come for the armies of Christendom to shake the torpor that has kept them prone for so long and to wash the heathens from their ill-acquired conquests. The Eastern Church has all but been swept away by the Moslem storm! Jerusalem! Holy Jerusalem chafes under the yoke of the oppressive Sultans of Egypt, a land once the birthplace of great Christian scholars, now only a den of heathen magics and evils!
Tomorrow I ride towards the fortress of Lyon where the armies of the Franks, assembled by my son, are already converging. There I will take up the cross and set upon the long road towards Jerusalem where our Savior was crucified for our sins. I leave my country in the care of my son whom I crown as co-ruler. Should anything befall me, he will assume to throne and rule as King of the Franks by the grace of God.
All who wish to join the armies of Christ, this Crusade, are welcome. Redemption awaits those who reach the Holy City and liberate it from the infidels.
Moslems, bring back this message to your leaders: the Franks are coming!
The King breathes heavily. The Archbishop of Reims helps him to his feet and he leaves the Grande Salle amid the stunned silence of the audience. As the doors close behind him, a cacophonous uproar tears through the assembled nobility.

His Holiness the Pope has not discussed this matter with our Cardinals....we are not prepared for such an initiative and greatly fear provoking our Muslim neighbours and their allies with whom we have strived for good relations.

I see... The noble King of such a peaceful and righteous nation calls for further bloodshed in a region that has just established a hard-fought and equally fragile peace. Hail! King of the Franks. My name is Demyan Beskinski. I have arrived from the great city of Novgorod to announce the dissolution of our Republic and the reunification of the Kievan Rus. We have for all this time been their subjects, but now we offer our full obedience to the Principality. We have been in talks with the Kievan Princes for many months now and, today, we wish to make these events known to your court:
Novogorod is no more. We are, today, officially a part of the Kievan Principality. The Rus of the Steppes have been reunited.
As for myself, I am representing the Sinii Druzhina (Blue Guard)--special guard to the Kievan Princes and servants to the Orthodox faith. May we be in service to this courtroom; and we echo both the concerns for this new crusade and the pleas for the return of our great city, Constantinople. We hope a resolution to these matters will come in the near future.

The Grand Prince of Kieven Rus, new Patriarch of the Orthodox Church, has hereby anathematizes the Byzantine Empire. These men, who were ounce the mighty Roman Empire, have fallen far indeed. The Grand Prince once believed that they were indeed men of true faith, but their loss of the great city of Constantinople has clearly shown that god no longer favors them. The Byzantine state has been consumed by greed and politics, tragically losing their faith. This is why they have fallen and this is why they can no longer truly be counted among the faithful. In light of this, the Hungarians war upon them is most just and is fully backed by Kieven Rus.
My lord would also like me to confirm the reunification of Rus. The Sinii Druzhina have taken control of the former provinces of Novgorod and their delegate, Demyan Beskinsk, is here as an honored guest. He speaks with the authority Rus and shall be treated as such.

The Greeks at least, tried to hold back their aggressors, even if they failed. But I have heard no word of even a gathering of your people to protect the faith. You should not be so quick to judge other men's motives when yours remain questionable.
Remember that inaction is also a conscious choice.

The papal envoy slithers into the court discreetly, in rather plain clothing. It actually takes a certain time for some to notice his presence. When a silence presents himself, he speaks up in a confident but oily voice with a heavy italian accents.
Esteemed gentlemen, too long has the righteous voice of his Holiness been absent from this chamber. Thanks to a gracious invitation by the most catholic Franks, this slight has been rectified.
Now, it has come to the attention of his Holiness that a Crusade is to be launched to retake the most holy of city of Jerusalem. Of course, his Holiness endorses such an endeavour and hopes *ALL* christians will lend their support. Unfortunately rumors have reached His ear that some might seek to hinder this Holy Cause, the faithless having wormed their way into their ranks and poisoned their mind with the words of the devil himself! These unfortunate souls would do well to rejoin the ranks of the Holy and join this Crusade, for those who move against it shall be eternally damned!
The Duke of Ancona receives a letter from a Venetian courier, reads it, and then stands to speak.
"This letter brings word that the Republic of Venice has, after much deliberation, decided that the crumbling Byzantine Empire can no longer truly be considered a true state. Its citizens are suffering in poverty and are ignorant of the true faith, and so the Doge sees no other alternative to seizing their lands, that we might bring them back to prosperity once more. Venice has joined the war against the Byzantines, in support of our friends the Magyars."
The Duke sits.
John Kenneth, the embassador of King William rises as he recieves news from England. Once he heard the messenger, he turns to the court to speak.
I've recieved words that Prince William has indeed abandoned Normandy to the french. Such foolishness has been ill recieved by his highness the King and so the prince has been punished accordignly. As for the province of Normandy... the King has decided to leave it in the capable hands of our respectable host, and accepted the cease fire.
Though we wish to better our relations with our neighbors, i'm afraid we have no men available to join in the crusade for Jerusalem. Not yet at least, for we too, wish for Jerusalem to be back into Christian's noble hands.

And how have we defended Infidels? The Muslims to our south have shown that they to can live in peace. Trade and happiness have flourished here in the East.

Resting on his bank the Prince of Asturias is doubtfully shaking his head while wonderlingly looking towards the Norman envoy.
England is doomed!
How foolish to accept a cease fire at this moment of time…
Now that the Franks are crusading in the Holy Land the Normans should have taken the opportunity to fight back the Frankish aggression the English people are facing!
Instead they are accepting a cease fire. How foolish…
The Franks were the ones who invaded your lands of the Normandy. They are the aggressor! You have the right and its your duty to defend your people! And now that the chance to fight back has risen you are backing down? Unbelievable…
You better make sure all your garrisons are fully packed… obviously not to fight the Franks but to keep your own people in check since any Englishmen in his right senses will outrage over the new kings decision.
Believe me my English friend… this peace wont last long! As soon as the Franks returned from the Holy Land and as soon as they will have invaded Christian Iberia they will take on England again! Its a matter of when not if!
You better take your chances now and fight as long as you still stand a chance!
Of course the Franks will try to appease you. Dont let them fool you! They act like a good and a bad king. The good king in this stage play Philip appears when its all about justice and God wanted things whereas bad king Prince Louis appears when punishment is around the corner. Be smart! See through it!
As soon as the Holy Land and Iberia is conquered there will be no hope left for England!
If the Normans refuse to go on fighting now they are doomed!
You better listen to my words my English friend! The upcoming invasion of my lands by the Franks and the conquering of Christian Iberia by Prince Louis the Aggressive -- the soon to happen fate of my kingdom will show you that I am right!

What foolishness are you babbling about? No later then this past month, the Frankish crown has returned Burgos in your care in hopes of strengthening your pathetic excuse for a kingdom against the Moorish Caliphate which your late King himself provoked without sufficient means for victory. And now, you accuse ME, in MY PRESENCE, of attempting to conquer your lands? You question the resolution of my father, now on a mission from God Himself, to have successfully forced William to amend his sinful ways and make peace with the Holy Father?
Maybe I should indeed head to Spain with my best knights and teach you both humility and respect for the Head of the Church. I may not be a man of prayer, but I certainly know better then to defy Rome for senseless reasons. Are you net already beleaguered enough between your war with Cordoba and your row with the Pope that you seek yet to alienate the Franks who have always had nothing but noble intentions towards your crown, even offering you assistance in your military struggles? Assistance which you readily accepted, going so far as to ask us to strike against the Moorish armies standing south of Valencia!
You heap baseless accusations upon the Frankish Crown, you lie openly to this court after all the offers of assistance we made you, you seek to incite war between Christian Princes in good standing when peace has been reached, and you insult me outrageously!

These Latins are very emotional, no, and bloodthirsty? First this Spaniard urges the whole world to war against the Moslems and now against our hosts the French? And the French are marching to war with their friends the Germans against the Moslems having ignored the Spaniard when he wanted to fight them!
The Priest blushes and skulks beneath his cowl as he realises that everyone has heard. Joszef is undeterred and grins broadly at the Spanish and French Princes, raising and draining his tankerd in his now-customary fashion.
Truely I hope that Spain does not believe that England will play their hand. You would have us wage a war that you wish you could conduct on your own but don't seem to be able to by yourself. Surely you would not think of us as foolish as this. As Prince Louis just stated, we already signed a ceasefire. Revoking it after your blabbering would be madness and an insult to our host. Prince Louis has been gone for several days. There is a hush in courtroom and France itself is quiet... for the news was heard not but a week ago:
King Phillipe is dead.
The noble king, fighting--it is said--dysentery amongst other things, sought to set out on one last valiant crusade before his death. He told no one of his condition... not even his son... and the illnesses took him before he could ride to the Holy Lands. His son, Louis, now seems to have disappeared. Perhaps internal politics have driven him off. Perhaps, he merely has gone to mourn his father in peace. Regardless, the French nobility have scrambled to fill the void... and in the midst of this situation, a new arrival comes to the court.
The doors to the courtroom burst open. Out of the early morning light he enters. He has a wide mustache and wears a soldier's uniform. As he surveys the crowd, he twiddles the mustache with his gauntlets--nodding and casting an eye around the room. Then the man rests his arms behind his back and puts one foot forward, slowly making his way to the center of the court.
Bonjour un amies! Auy am Jean Bon of thay FrEInch Duché... and I come repr'resenting de Duché in de abseance of de preence, Louis XI. Know sat... az of now... de crusades of de King Phillipé have been put on hold-ah... maybe latrr if we-ah feel like it, thoe.
The man then begins to make his way to the end of the chamber, where the King's throne and ambassador's seat rest. As he walks up the steps, he trips slightly and grabs hold of the armrests of the ambassador's chair. He then snaps around and eyes the general court, finding immediately the English diplomat and glaring at him. He draws his fingers up to his eyes, pointing between him and the Englishman as he slowly takes his seat.

As the message arrives the Council Chamber the Prince of Asturias suddenly becomes silent. He bows his head to the floor in shame. He feels guilty. The man who has just been enjoying the beauty of his ancillas now feels like an old broken man. There is a black hole inside of him.

After having spent two weeks back at home at the royal palace in Léon enjoying all the great things Iberia has to offer the Prince of Asturias now has recovered from the feelings of guilt and is back in Paris.
He is resting on his bank, as always enjoying the service and beauty of his ancillas when a messenger arrives handing over a note to him.
The Prince has a look on the note.
Harrumph.
Caliph the of the East, he starts to read.
I gladly received your offer for peace. How desperately I would like to end this horrible war.
Yet this no longer seems to be in my hands. Mmmmh...
After the Massacre of Murcia I promised to the people of Christian Iberia to not stop fighting until the last heathen left. Yes I remember that day in Léon
Even if I now ordered to stop this terrible war it would not end. My brother, my son, the nobles… they would rebel against me as soon as I released this order. Those disloyal bastards...
Prince Eusebio already does not seem to follow my order anymore. Eusebio... mhhh... brother... He and two nobles loyal to him, on their own ,rushed forward towards the city of Cordoba. It looks like as I lost control over him. Eusebio Eusebio... what did I tell you about rushing into enemy territory. Hopefully you will survive this trip. He is concentrating on the letter again, stops thinking and continues reading.
If we want to end this horrible war we will have to come to an agreement that includes a full withdrawal of all Muslim armies from Iberia. I guess so
It is on you great Caliph to decide upon peace or war. Let this horrible shedding of blood end wise ruler of the East. Hopefully the new Caliph is a wise ruler so this war finally will come to an end.
King Rodrigo I.
He is looking up. Thats all!
The Prince of Asturias sits down again glancing towards the Moorish envoy with a quizzical look on his face.
A Venetian envoy enters the room, presents the Duke of Ancona with a scroll, and then leaves quietly. After reading over the scroll, a triumphant grin stretches across his broad jawline. He stands to speak.
"This message has given me an excellent piece of news. The last vestiges of the Byzantine Empire, holed up in Dyrrachium and Arta, have been conquered, and their petty kingdom is no more. While it gives us Venetians no happiness to know that blood had to be spilt to gain these new lands, we can rejoice in the fact that the poor people of these regions will no longer be condemned to hell for heathenism. They will, once again, be brought back into the fold of the one true faith.
And, with the end of the war, the Most Serene Republic is now once again completely at peace, and we may focus our efforts on trading and being prosperous as usual."
The Duke sits, pleased.

I trust, my Lord Duke, that you condemn these people to hell for falling under the influence of the false Pontif of the Romans. The Orthodox faith is the truest and most faithful of all religions, and I'm sure that the good people who had the wisdom not to fall under the spell of that false Pontif will not go to hell. My Lord does not slander the people of Catholicism in this way, for while your path may not be correct in all ways, you do follow The Lord and his divine son Jesus Christ, and as such will be spared from the fire, for "He is a merciful God."
On a somewhat different matter, it has come to my attention that the Princes of Novgorod who had been believed to be under the control of the Sinii Druzinii, have once again rebelled. The Sinii Druzinii, along with the standard forces of the Grand Prince and Pontif of Kiev, are currently teaching these traitors the error of their ways and soon all of Rus shall once again be United under the sight of our Lord God.
The Duke stands.
"Yes, of course. Your nation and the Orthodox faith are both highly honourable. It was the filthy Byzantine influence on your faith that needed to be purged, and rest assured, we are doing so. You have my apology if my words were unclear and misinterpreted."

How dare you speak of the Byzantines in such a way! The gold of your Doge might be great, but it can not buy the right and true nobility of the sword, which you quite lack.
The Duke puts on a semblance of confusion.
"What Byzantines? I see no Byzantines here. Why, my friend, I do believe there are no Byzantines left to be insulted!"
Then he sits, chuckling to himself.

it is not the venetians, but the turks who hold that holy city.
The English envoy would listen to his collegues and sigh.
Altough I did not have much to do with Byzantium's fall, there is one thing that bother's me and it is the lack of respect that show's in one's actions and words. Obviously, the Eastern Romans were naive enough to get tricked by the turks and the Egyptians. Their fall is their own fault and there is no denying it, but it is no reason to show the once great nation respect. And you, my dear Duke, your nation waited until they were weak enough so that venitians army would have no nearly no opposition to seize what was left of the land. Your cowardly victory has no merit. It is the Turks, whom I see high in this war. They were clever, prepared, and true to themselves, and never have I heard them insult any of you in this court.
You might want to learn from the "heathens" my friend, for they seem to be more of a noble than you.

Although we value your words, Englishman, and appreciate the compliment, our actions are nothing to value too highly. We have merely followed the ways of Allah and not payed disrespect to those who have not deserved it. Although the Byzantines were our enemies, we have respect for there noble ways and their valiant warriors. They ended their time as our friends, and as such we would ask of all nations to honour their memory.

A well dressed French gentlemen enters the room, and dismisses the former representative of France.
https://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb225/askthepizzaguy/France.png
Demandez à L'Homme: Warm greetings to all in these chambers. I am Demandez à L'Homme. It seems there has been a sudden coup by the military, and the French nobility has executed our former King for numerous reasons, which I've included in the following poem. We might be violent revolutionaries but we take our cultural contributions to the world most seriously.
*ahem*
Le Grand Roi
by the Demandez à l'homme
Our King is guilty of lewdness, exposure indecent,
Incestuous romances, both chronic and recent,
Drinking while horse riding, demonic possession,
And that's just page one of his ten page confession!
We have found him guilty of lascivious adultery,
And also of barbarity, and quite a lot of bribery.
Our tax rates are insanity; raised to an intolerable degree,
And he's offended the bourgeoisie with this cruel oppressive larceny.
He's the epitome of illegitimacy, quite unworthy of being royalty,
And it seems he's also put our entire treasury on a ship that sank at sea.
It's even rumored that the King sleeps with his donkey!
But most insulting of all, by royal decree,
We've now been forced to spell "oui, oui" as "wee wee"
And now people snicker whenever we're seen,
He's dishonored all France to the highest degree.
We've had enough of this, and agreed the king had to go.
We dragged him from his bed and out into the fallen snow.
His maddening reign was one that had to be stopped,
So we put him to the guillotine, and his head we surely chopped.
"Au revoir and bonne chance, mon Roi" we said,
To his rolling, disembodied, freshly crownless head.
Upon hearing this poem, all French observers in attendance began to applaud enthusiastically, cheer and whistle. L'Homme nods politely and continues.
L'Homme: "The nobility have pledged their allegiance to the new French king. There is still unrest in the country, where some who are loyal to the former king are causing trouble. It is recommended that our neighbors steer clear of the French border, for your safety.
It is my duty to inform all ambassadors here that any non-sanctioned military forces found on French soil during this instability may be mistaken for the enemy and destroyed accidentally. Please accept our apologies in advance.
I would also like to inform everyone here that any foreign agents in our lands that are not solely engaged in diplomacy or commerce will be executed immediately upon sight, and we will consider such treachery to be an act of war, even more so than an unintended trespass of non-French military units who proudly carry the banner of their nation. In short, leave your cloak and dagger at home; if you wish to enter France illegally, bring an army. We will be proud to fight you honorably. And should you be forced to carry your banners back home in defeat, we will offer you some wine.
We offer you ONE entire season as a grace period to remove any undeclared agents and units from French territory, out of a desire for peace and as a show of generosity.
Bonjour, mes amis."

The burly Magyar Joszef is clearly delighted with this turn of events, and as the poem is read out he beats his tankard on the table in front of him in time with the rhythmn of the verse, causing suds of ale to shower those seated closest to him.
When the Frenchman finishes his address, Joszef rises unsteadily to his feet and, grinning broadly, addresses him in a booming voice, waving his arms around demonstratively and showering his neighbours with more ale as he does so.
Sir, you are a fine fellow indeed and a poet of some skill! You should attend some of the establishments I have been frequenting in your fine city, where your skills at verse will be greatly appreciated!
I'm sure our great King Lazslo is more than happy to continue his friendly relationship wtih the French crown, whichever chappie tends to wear it at the time. We have no agents or armies in France, save for my good self and my companion Father Stephen here, so you have nothing to worry about on that front.
Vive la France!
With an exaggerated bow which nearly causes him to lose his balance, he sits once more and can be heard happily humming the Frenchman's poem to himself while drinking from his now-depleted tankard.

Demandez à L'Homme is handed a scroll and reads it. He seems to be upset with what he has read. He stands and requests the attention of all the assembled guests and dignitaries.
Demandez: It seems the previous French king was more foolish than I thought. He had apparently signed an alliance with our centuries-long blood enemies, the English. I am afraid I cannot honor this alliance, especially when we do not even know who the current English King is. There are rumors he has been slain in battle due to the Scottish or Irish rebellions.
We cannot abide such instability so close to our capital, nor can we abide lawlessness and piracy near our ports. Unless something is done, I am afraid I must announce our intention to protect French interests by defeating the rebellion where the English crown has failed. We may be forced to send a peacekeepers to the region to defeat the rebels, before they grow fat and powerful in conquest. I have already spoken to our allies and received no word of objection to this action. Should anyone else take issue with this which we consider to be an internal matter of French security, please contact one of our emissaries and make your objections known. If necessary, we will begin by securing any undefended English towns and ports. Given how often we have defeated the silly English on the battlefield, we know that they will be far safer under French protection than under inept English rule.
That unpleasant business aside, another bottle of wine for every man here who wishes to have a drink. Bonjour, monsieurs.

Into the French King’s Court strides a slick looking man. With his black hair cut short, eyes darting around, quickly taking in his surroundings, and his dress just a little too nice, he resembled more a shady businessman then a diplomat. When he reached the tables where the dignitaries resided, he smiled broadly-almost too broadly, as if there was some hidden joke behind that smile-and then with arms spread welcomingly, he addressed the court “Ah, friends, sorry for my tardiness to this party, but the new boss’s been rearranging things a bit. As to whom I am, that’s a good question. Not quite sure myself. I’m certainly not my predecessor.” The man says this as he looks around the room, “looks like he ran off already, and I was so looking forward to firing his lazy but. But who am I; am I a new breed or the return of an old one?” He ponders for a second, but then replies, “To be frank with you, I honestly don’t care. As long as I keep getting paid this handsomely, I’ll play whatever roll I need to.”
He moves to sit down, but then remembers, “Almost forgot to thank our esteemed host, the good French King. May his rule prove to be wiser then the last. Allying with the Brits, just foolish; barbarians the lot of them; can’t even control their own little isles.” Finished with what he had to say, he sat down at an empty table, not assigned to any nation.
One dignitary, not able to control himself any more, blurts out “But who are you and why are you here?”
Smiling, as if that was what he was waiting for, the man replies “Glad you asked. I am Crowlousky Franks Bürich von Bassürts, but that’s just what my friends call me. You can call me Crowley. As to why I am here, I thought I explained that; I’m here for the pay. A more pertinent question would be ‘who I represent’. That’s a bit more complicated however. I am here on behalf of the would-be Kaiser Charles Heinrich of the Holy Roman Empire, But I'm not. Seems he went and disbanded the whole thing. ‘Building anew from the foundation’ or something like that. Kaiser seems to fancy himself a true Roman. Went and assumed the title Emperor Constantine of the Northern Roman Empire.” Upon seeing the confused stares of many dignitaries, Crowley says “Well it don’t make much sense to me either, but as long as he keeps pushing the gold my way, I’d call him Lord Jupiter if he asked me to.” Many dignitaries looked appalled at the pagan Rome analogy. Crowley retorts “lighten up, it’s just a joke. Don’t tell me I’m in a room full of stiffs. I might just have to ask for a raise if you’re all just going to bore me.”
At that point a servant brought out a glass of wine. Crowley happily accepted it, taking a quick swig. “The French sure do know their wine.” He savors the sip for a minute, then he digs in his pocket for a second; tossing the servant a bag of gold he says “A Roman diplomat doesn’t sit at a bland table. Get me some table cloths and decor. I’m thinking black and red. Hurry now!”

So, the Roman Empire has returned has it? Hopefully you shall hold the title better than the slaavish Byzantines. The supreme Pontif of the Orthodox church has sent me word that he acknowledges this turn of events in Europe, and sends to good wishes to the Emperor. In the past our people had held an alliance through the Noble Hungarians, and I hope this may continue. However, it is not the apathy that truly angers my lord, but the treachery. As the wise among us have clearly noticed, there is a wolf hiding among Christ’s flock. "I should not have expected you scum bags to maintain any sort of peace with me for too long. Once again, it is time for the large barbaric kings of northern Europe to bully the peaceful trading state in the region. Venice is not prepared for war, but we will fight like the Gryphons on our banners to defeat these unwelcome invaders.
The alliance I hold with the Fatimids was merely a defensive one- such that if either of us were attacked, the other would come to its aid. So I feel I must congratulate you for incurring the wrath of the Muslims once again. Not only have you endangered yourself, but you have provided them with ample opportunity and legitimate reason to invade Europe, which I believe was the one thing that both of you were striving most vigorously to prevent.
So, please, bring your best troops to these battles. I will enjoy hearing about your foolish men being slaughtered as you lament your knavish actions in this room."

No, I very much doubt they will jump to your aid, Venetian. As much as we do not want them in Europe, they don’t want Europe unified against them.”
Crowley now turns to the Fatimid diplomat, “We have heard much of the great diplomatic efforts of the Fatimid, but my Lord has seen that you are truly men of action. Although he admires this, he warns ‘that your words are greatly welcomed in Europe, your actions, however, are not’. Our quarrel is with the traitors, not the Muslims. I, of course, realize that the previous Kaiser and French King attempted to Crusade against you,” Crowley smiles at this point, “but then, neither of them can be here with us anymore. I assure you, my lord has no ill-will towards the people of Islam, but he will not stand for foreigners interfering in European affairs.” Before sitting down Crowley adds to all the Muslim representatives, “My Lord does hope that we can all remain friendly, but if not, neutral suites him too.”
Once seated Crowley looks back at the Venetian, “I do have one question Duke. Once Ancona is taken, will you leave us or shall you assume a new title? May I suggest Jack of Cells or the Banished King? Or how about just The Exile?”

But remember the virtues of mercy before you destroy them all, perhaps the Venetians can be reformed.
A Venetian messenger enters the court. He is haggard and weary, and joins the rather more haggard and weary Duke of Ancona. He presents him with a long scroll... a list of various events that have recently occurred. The Duke, resigned to such horrors but still wildly defiant, stands.
"Here I am given a list of the atrocities committed by the Northern Roman Empire and the Magyar Kingdom. I hope you are taking notes; this is obviously rather long. What else can one expect from German and Slav barbarians? Furthermore, this list contains the actions of the Sicilians, who have seen fit to invade us in our time of struggle. Obviously they were too cowardly to fight us while we were at full strength.
-The conquer of the city of Milan by the Romans.
-The conquer of the city of Zagreb by the Magyars.
-The conquer of the castle at Ragusa by the Magyars.
-The besiegement of the city of Thessalonica by the Magyars.
-The besiegement of the castle at Ajaccio by the Sicilians.
-The besiegement of my beloved castle at Ancona by the Sicilians.
-The assault and sinking of several Venetian ships by the Roman and Sicilian navies.
-The conquer of the great capital city of Venice by the Romans.
-The murder of the Doge of Venice in the process thereof.
A new Doge has been appointed, in the absence of a High Council, to oversee the remaining territories of the Venetian Domain. This Doge is none other than the son of the murdered Doge: Benasuto Selvo. I now represent him and his interests in this Council.
I am also pleased to note that the Roman and Magyar crowns are suffering the righteous punishment of God for their atrocities. The Pope has seen fit to excommunicate both nations. Their lands and people should be brought under the dominion of kings who will not send them to Hell with their orders.

With much seriousness, the French ambassador says this:
First of all, France was not consulted nor was involved in the planning or execution of this attack on your sovereignty, as should be apparent by our late arrival here and the fact that we tried to make a long-term trade deal with you which would have had to have been canceled almost immediately. (I would have appreciated being consulted...)
Secondly, we are quite busy fending off our hated enemies, the British. We also need to have reserve forces in our nation to repel sneak attacks and spies and assassins. We are far too taxed to get involved, and the nearest help would be years away. It would also mean betraying my most deeply-rooted alliances, which gravely impacts French security.
Thirdly, you seek Spain and Denmark's involvement: I know that Spain is quite busy with the Moors, and Denmark has almost no chance of meaningful assistance. I know they will not interfere... had they any plan to do so, it would still take ages for them to make any meaningful difference, and by then, I fear the Venetians will be long gone.
You lack strong alliances and friendships with those nations who could assist you. You did not prepare for this eventuality by forming close friendships with the Sicilians, Hungarians, or the Roman Empire. You did not see it coming, and your defenses were quickly overwhelmed. To be frank, your former Doge was an unfit leader if he could not prepare for a coming disaster such as this. I am not saying Venice deserves to be extinguished; but I am suggesting that your best move is to become a vassal state; to end the bloodshed and spare your lives and your kingdom from annihilation; and that is only if your conquerors see fit to keep you around as a vassal state.
Even mighty Rome was conquered and reconquered and re-reconquered, and forced to pay tribute. They later found independence. Being a vassal state or paying tribute is not a pleasant option, but given your weak diplomatic standing and incredibly weak defenses, that is your only option. I apologize that France cannot do more on this matter. Asking us to attack our closest allies is absurd and would lead to France's defeat as well. I am afraid we are not prepared to go down with you and have no wish to do so.
If you truly seek close friendships with the Muslim states, they are perhaps the only ones who could help you now. What you do is your business, but I doubt even they could arrive in time.
In short; you've been bested, my friend. It wasn't even a fair fight, that's for certain, but what is done is done. Do what you must do to protect the lives of your people and the continuation of your line. I would advise paying homage and serving one of the Kings who have bested you in battle, until you are ready to prove yourself a viable independent Republic again.
Now if you will excuse me... I have matters of state to attend to.

At this point one of his aids leans over and whispers in Crowley’s ear, which caused Crowley to burst out laughing. “Let me get this straight, the Republic call upon Spain and Denmark to bring ‘righteous punishment’ down upon us excommunicated nations. I did not realize when Legionnaire killed the Doge, their intelligence died with them.” Noticing the glares from the Republic diplomats, Crowley tries to correct himself, “I didn’t mean to say your stupid, just that you lost information...actually,” Crowley considers, “lets just go with both. Now what apparently neither of you know,” Crowley continues, still addressing the Republic, “is that both the kings of Spain and Denmark are among the Pope’s un-favored. That leaves the Irish and Scottish, since the French have already turned you down; and between you and me,” Crowley leans forward, cusping his hand beside his mouth as if telling a secret, “I don’t think the British barbarians really care what happens to you.”

You're kidding.... you're going to divert troops from your war with the Moors to battle the forces of the Roman Empire, Hungary, and Sicily?
If you attack the Northern Roman Empire, even though you're my ally, they are also my ally and I'd have to break ties with Spain. If you posed a serious enough threat to the Northern Roman Empire, that would be an issue for me for obvious reasons.
I'm almost amused enough to stand back and see what happens. I don't want to get involved, and I seriously think if you wound up in Italy, the uhh..... triumvirate over there would just destroy any invaders. Just by my estimate, they could easily defeat you even if I sent forces to help you.
Are you sure? :sweatdrop:

Of course the Venetians, but they’re already a doomed breed. The only way they’ll be spared the sword is by the mercy of King Laszlo, not that they would deserve it. So good Prince, please do tell the court who exactly it is you plan to march against.” With a crooked grin Crowley adds, “We wouldn’t want there to be any misunderstandings.”

After a long period of silence and withdrawal into one of the corners of the room, the diplomat from Konya awakes from his apathy and stands. He moves swiftly to a central position at the table, and before sitting addresses the council with a proud, powerful and almost happy voice.
It seems as though the noble Venetians are not alone in their struggle after all. Sultan Meliksah, in his eternal wisdom and ferocious strength, has brought Seljuk forces to bear on the greedy and powerhungry Magyars. Surely enough, we are of similar heritage and we could have been brothers with these people, but it was not to be. From this day on, we are enemies. Adrianopolis and Bukarest have already been seized by Seljuk troops, and the following seasons will see more people put under the gracious rule of the Sultan.
And oh, assembled gentlemen, your usual arsenal of "heathen invaders" and "blasphemers" would seem a bit blunt at this stage, wouldn't it? So please, don't even bother. We at least keep the peace with our brothers of faith, and even fight to protect friends of different beliefs. In the name of Allah, we shall succeed in doing so!

I asked him again about it recently after I had launched the attack and he said he didn't recall the agreement and would have broken it anyway even if he did as he was looking to liven up the game a bit.
It was all OOC and I don't publicly quote PMs so you're going to have to take my word for it.
I'm actually surprised it makes a difference to anybody, I only mentioned it to guilt-trip barca! Actually I completely understand his preference for war over peace, that's the same reason I attacked the venetians in the first place - the game had gotten really boooring,

Well if the Turks had broken some sort of recognized treaty you might have counted on France's support and possible assistance. This seems to be a case of leaving one's border undefended and then attacking some friends of the Turks... or even merely dropping one's guard. Sorry monsieur, but I am afraid you're on your own in that regard. The very first thing the new French monarchy did when we came to power was ensure the security of France by making powerful friends on our borders. A little foresight may have saved you some aggravation on your own border.
Now if you will excuse me, I must focus on more pressing matters of state.

If, which I doubt, my Sultan ever made such a promise, he has deemed it useless. Times change, minds change and mostly, politics change. If you had been the only nation invading our friends of Venice, there might have been peace between us. But I cannot see how my nation and Sultan could turn the blind-eye when three powerful Catholic nations attack our loyal allies at the same time. Fighting a three front war, against such superior opposition, without any help whatsoever is just not doable. So, this promise you mentioned, if it ever existed, has been made null and void by current conditions and diplomatic standings. And I assure you, the inhabitants of your towns and provinces are being treated with all the respect they deserve.
OOC: Hey, I know I made this agreement with you monkey but I just couldn't sit on my arse in Konstantiniyye and do nothing (for perfectly valid both IC and OOC reasons). I mean, seriously, someone has to atleast try to stop the bullies from beating up the smallest kid in class? And yes, I was bored out of my mind with this game. Now I am looking forward to the next turn already! War always livens things up. After all, this game isn't made for peace. It lacks the mechanics to make peace enjoyable, for a longer period of time anyway. Especially in hotseats, where there is so much time between your turns.
So don't worry monkey, it went down pretty much exactly as you say it did. I don't remember the details of my promised neutrality, but it was there. Now however, it is no more. :)

The Rus diplomat looks quite distressed as he hears of the war between the Seljuks and the Magyars
Ah, sad times are these indeed. The peace we had finally achieved in the East has been broken again. My Lord will have to think long and hard about what course to take, but I have been sent one preliminary offer for the Sultan. The Grand Prince has stated that he will remain neutral in this conflict if the city of Constantinople is turned over to Kieven Rus. He has little desire for war and hopes to see this conflict end quickly.

Upon hearing the Seljuk’s proclamation of war against the Magyar, one of the Roman assistants quickly jumps up and leaves the room in search of Crowley.
Crowley enters the room right as the Rus diplomat finishes, “It appears my meeting will have to wait, for this is much grave news. My Lord had hoped that a peace could be maintained between the East and West, but it seems the Seljuk wish to dissolve that illusion. Neither does Rome buy that the Seljuk wish to protect the Venetians, they simply saw an opportunity to steal Christian lands and they took it. Now good King Laszlo shall make them pay the price for their greed. The Magyar have the full support of the Roman Empire in their efforts to expel the aggressive Turks from Europe for good!”
Crowley turns to the Magyar and pulls out a note. Handing it to him, Crowley says, “I was asked to pass on a message from the Emperor to your King, ‘Rome shall be watching his back so that he need only worry about the enemies that stand before him’.”

Once the court had calmed down again, Crowley slips away to finish his meeting with the Roman messenger. Upon his return, there is an obvious fervor in his movement, but he retains his usual calm. Once at his seat, Crowley addresses the court, but his usual act is gone; replaced by a much more somber tone. “Dignitaries and nobles, I come in heavy heart, for Rome will no longer stand by while the Christian world succumbs to darkness. It is evident to us now that the traitors were not the cause of the sickness, merely a symptom. The heart of Catholicism has been corrupted for so long, but none were willing to acknowledge it. Although some may hate us for what we must do that is a burden Rome must bear in order to save Catholicism. The Pope has sat on a throne of kings for so long that he has forgotten his duty to tend God’s throne. He has sat by idly while barbarians and heathens overrun Christian lands and now he chooses to side with the traitors, while trying to out God’s faithful from the Catholic flock! Well Pope be warned,” Crowley thrust his fist into the air and then proclaims in a loud, almost shouting, voice “today Rome returns home!” After that, Crowley plops back down in his chair with renewed energy and spirit.

Crowley laughs at the Venetian, “Big talk coming from a traitor; what are you even doing here?” Crowley feigns an innocent curiosity, “Shouldn’t you be hiding behind the skirts of the Turks,” Crowley looks from the Seljuk diplomat to the hefty Magyar “then again, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere near the Turks right now either.” Crowley smiles, but then he turns serious, waving his hand in dismissal, “Enough of this nonsense, there are more important matters at hand. I received word today that Rome now lays in the Empires hands. The city surrendered with little resistance; obviously they saw the truth in what Emperor Constantine sought. Unfortunately the false prophet Gregorious was not to be found. Rome will not rest till that turbulent priest steps down from his post and repents for his sins.”
Before Crowley can even sit back down, the court’s doors burst open and a young Italian boy rushes in. In his hands he carries bundles of pamphlets, which are sporadically flying all over the place as he runs. Following close behind, French guards give chase, but unfortunate in their armor, they cannot keep up with the small agile boy. The boy ducts between some noblemen, under a table, and around a woman’s puffy dress. While the guards were still trying to squirm their way through the court’s nobles without angering them, the boy takes the opportunity to speak. In a loud announcing voice, the boy yells to the court, “Read all about it, read all about it!” Waving a flyer in the air he continues “Pope betrays God; Brings War to Christ’s People; Sicily Under Siege!” The boy quickly runs around the room handing pamphlets out to the diplomats. Then, seeing the guards about to make it through the crowd, the boy throws his remaining flyers into the mass of gathered nobles. As pamphlets fill the air the boy makes a dash for the door, and soon disappears.
Crowley picks up a pamphlet, smiles, and says mostly to himself “Well, I guess we can quite looking.”

As he entered, servants quickly dressed up a table next to the Roman envoy with fine silk table cloths and golden goblets. Surely this is not the way to treat the champions of Catholic Europe, doing God's work? His Holiness should reconsider!

“Yes,” Crowley replies, “He has been most unagreeable as of late. The crazy Scot seems to have become most distraught since the French and English started their campaign to reign in the British Isles.” Crowley shakes his head in disapproval, “He should be overjoyed that his people are being enlightened by the glorious rule of civilized nations, but instead the latest word indicates that he has abandoned his post at the Vatican and joined up with the remnants of the Papal army. It appears they again hide out in the Sicilian countryside although as of yet they have not made any aggressive actions. Whatever Ioannes’s motive for taking out his anger on you, good Magyar, I do not yet know, but I assure you that he shall stand trial for his crimes,... assuming he makes it back to Rome.”

The french ambassador stands and makes an announcement.
Attention! Attention!
The Irish rebels are no more. The Glorious French Empire have utterly crushed the Irish and have gained their territories. Furthermore, the Scottish King has been slain in glorious battle, face-to-face with our Emperor, and we now control Scottish lands.
Further, the Duke of Normandy, our Emperor's friend and subject, has defeated the main army of the Scots and taken control of their lands. The last of them will fall, with absolute certainty, within one season, as the Normans have them utterly surrounded.
The French Empire now claims and holds in its military possession all of the lands of the British Isles and the Emerald Isles. Our victorious forces are now for the most part returning home; we turn our attention to much-needed domestic concerns.
Finally, it is with great pleasure that I announce that our Glorious Emperor, the Sun God Askthepizzaguy, has renounced the pointy-headed pontiff, and declared him to be a weakling and a heretic, who dares question the inspired decisions of the one and only Great One. For this, I have it on our Emperor's authority that he will toss the Puppeteer in chains and force him to wear a collar and bark like a dog if the foolish idiot ever dares show himself in public. Excommunicate our Glorious Ruler? I think not. This insult shall never be forgotten, but the bag of skin and bones that calls himself a Pope will soon be relegated to the dustbin of history, like the Scottish and Irish kings before him. The French unclog their noses at the man in a dress and calls his demands to stop attacking the Irish a silly thing. The Pope does not frighten us with his silly knees bent hands together praying behavior. Yes, we fire arrows at the top of his pointy head and make castanets out of his testicles already!
All Hail the Glorious Emperor, Sun-God Askthepizzaguy, Eternal Ruler of France!
GOD BE PRAISED!!!

The old Venetian ambassador has long since died of shame and is now a curled-up, rotting heap of flesh in the corner of the room. It has been a long time since any Venetian presence was felt in the room, though it was certainly smelled.
Suddenly, a messenger wearing crimson and gold enters the room, looks at the dead body, gasps, drops his message and runs away screaming.
Another ambassador reads the message aloud:
"Greetings from the Hermit King Cristiano, Lord of Crete, Doge of Venice, and Marquis of Moldy Green Rocks.
Now, listen up, all of you. I never wanted this job. I was content to live out my days on this deserted island in peace and quiet, but you just had to kill my entire family, didn't you?
Well, guess what? Now I'm the Doge! HA! The joke's on you!
Or... maybe it's on me. Yes! I do believe the joke is on me. Hahaha. Haha. Ha. Isn't it funny?
Well, anyway, I'd very much appreciate it if you left me alone now. I have no intention of sharing my rocks with any of you. The rocks are mine. They are all mine. So leave them for me.
And that is why I am granting the Kings of Deutschland and Salmon-Pinkiness the privilege of making peace with me.
Because really, the Marquisate of Moldy Green Rocks is all about peace. It's like, our motto or something.
So, I encourage you to accept my generous offer. It is the last you will receive from the Hermit King.
Not that I wouldn't like to keep in touch, and everything, but I have rocks to tend to. You know, the usual.
Perhaps we can arrange a tea-party some day?
That would be nice. Let me know and we can set a date.
Yours only on weekends and sometimes at midnight,
Cristiano Selvo"

Crowley kicks the down man to try and get him under control, but a crash on the other side proves that his other assistant could not contain himself either. The Rus envoy raises a skeptical eyebrow at the latest envoy's message
Well, that makes it quite clear what the gods intend for those who do not follow our Lord God in the traditional manner. Which would apply to the so called "Sun God" as well. I have to wonder aloud why he is so fussed about what the pope has to say when he has declared himself divine, unless he knows it is simply a delusion. Still, I am glad to hear that the old stooge is being put in his place.
I have recieved a message from my lord
he says unrolling a scroll and starting to read
Greetings fellow Lords of the Cross
I, the Patriarch of the Orthodox Church and ruler of the Rus Empire, have heard of these troubles with the Papal pretender in the West and wish to offer you all a solution.
Perhaps the foul deeds committed by those in the office of Pope can help you realize where following these new unorthodox ways will lead you. I encourage you all, Christian lords, to acknowledge me as the supreme spiritual guide in this world. Already I have proven that I possess the grace of god by bringing all the eastern lands north of the black sea into my arms. Rest assured that with your loyalty your rights and lands shall not be infringed upon, as the Pope would do, but you would merely be guided by my great spiritual inspiration in matters of faith.
The envoy lowers the scroll, rolling his eyes at his lords self flattery.
In more practical terms, I believe my lord wishes to unite all those of the Christian faith again, removing the gap between the Eastern and western churches. Of course, he does not mean this as any kind of refutation of those who follow Islam I'm sure
he nods to the Turkish ambassador

My master has done a great deal of heathen killing, far more than yours at least. He has rid the world of one pagan kingdom, the Lithuanians, and is in the process of doing the same with the Cumans. He has also crushed the rebellion of the false princes of Novgorod who have turned to all kinds of perversions of faith. Some even speak of Arians in their midst.

A young Italian man enters the chamber, finds the Konyite ambassador Abdhul and marches to him. Upon handing over a letter to the man, and after some puzzled discussion between the ambassador and his aid, the Italian recieves a few silver coins. In return, he opens his leather pack and hands him another item, this time a rolled up parchment. Being dismissed by Adbhul, the man leaves the room with haste.
While unrolling and reading the document, Abdhul's facial expression goes from slightly confused to surprised, fading into slight anger. Before standing, he resets his features to the diplomatically neutral look which is standard among envoyes as himself.
' Respected lords and diplomats of this court. Some of you may already know of recent events in the Mediterranean and Southern italy. The rest of you are likely to know sooner rather than later. However, it is my duty as the representative of Sultan Meliksah, and in this case also his trusted generals, to bring you these words.
It seems, in a tragic event, the Sicilian fleet has opted to block and harass a Konyite fleet south of Syracuse. Needless to say, the aggressors where defeated. In a surprising move, general Korkut Illker, honoured commander of the Sultanate of Konya, made landfall at Naples, and, in his own words, "Brought the King and Pretender Simone to justice. Thousands of his subjects where doomed because of his foolishness." It appears the city is now in Konyite hands. I have no further information at this time. '
Turning to his aid, he rapidly whispers orders to him and sends him off. After seating, he empties his wine and hastily starts writing on the parchments in front of him.

At the Turks news, Crowley cracks a wide smiles. Then in a sly jeering tone, he addresses the Turkish envoy,
“Ah, Ambassador Abdul, your agitation amuses me. Looks to me like the Sultans favorite commander got a little off course. I’d hate to see the Sultanate fall because of one turbulent general. You know this reminds me of something...”
Crowley puts a finger to his lips as if trying to conjure some memory, then shaking his finger at Ambassador Abdul, he exclaims,
“That’s it! A few days ago, a messenger graced my quarters. Now I tell you this was a man who had braved sieges and barbarians to deliver even the simplest of letters; but when he arrived at my door, he was as skittish as a hare. The man even jumped at the slightest twitch of his own shadow, which was quite inconvenient since he wouldn’t stop trembling. It turned out the poor soul had just returned from delivering news to the Emperor of the presence of a Turkish fleet off the coast of Italy. It seems the wretched soul was the only one in the room at the time, got the full blast of the Emperor’s fury. Imagine what it will be like when he finds out about this outrage; Turkish troops on Italian soil.”
Crowley closes his eyes and imagines.
“Oh how I wish I could be there.”
He sighs to himself for a minute, then getting serious, he turns to Ambassador Abdul and issues one final statement,
“I won’t pretend to know what you, or more appropriately, General Illker should do; but if you want my advise, you should seek a diplomatic solution to this problem and quickly, before Rome’s armies come to his door. And believe me, they are coming; and they will not find this as humorous as I do.”

Joszef stands, shakily, and looks concerned.
We Magyar are much pained by this outbreak of violence against our allies and friends the Sicilians. The Turks have shown themselves villains in murdering the Sicilian King and bringing war to the Italian peninsula unprovoked. We implore them to withdraw immediately and make reparations to the Sicilian people for their losses.
We value our recently negotiated peace - more, it seems, than the Sultan does given his disregard for our feelings in attacking our allies - and we do not wish to return to conflict with our neighbours. If there is a peaceful path to be found, we will walk it.
He begins to sit and then seems to remember something.
Oh, that's right, the Venetians are no more, their final island refuge falling to our forces this very season. They fought valiantly, something I am sure God will take into account in his Judgement.

The doors slam open, and a heavy man enters, pushing another pale and thin Italian boy in front of him. His travelling cape wears sign of a long journey, but otherwise his luxurious and sizeable clothes shimmer of silk in various colours. The poor boy loses his balance, and is thrown a coin or two by the massive man before crawling back out of the room.
The mere appearance of this physically impressive figure silences the pretty loud chamber, but only the representative of Konya rises to greet him. A few heavy steps brings the newcomer to the seat next to the Konyite, and he nods shortly to his colleague before loudly declaring his purpose.
' Noble and not-so noble diplomats. Worthy and unworthy representatives. Faithful and blasphemers. I come here today to address you all on behalf of the Great Sultan Meliksah of the Konyite Sultanate of Konstanitiniyye, and apparently also the Grand General Korkut Illker of the Western Army, Conqueror of the Infidel.
Firstly, to avoid any further misunderstandings, the Sultan did not order General Illker to make landfall in Italy and bring war to the Sicilian Kings. That said, however, he fully expresses the support of the Konyite Nation for their Western warriors. The conquest of Southern Italy is legitimate and blessed by Sultan Meliksah.
Speaking of conquests, I shall start with announcing that the Sultan sent the Second Army of the West, under the command of General Mehmet the Liberator, to continue what General Illker started. Syracuse has fallen, and Konyite authority has been established. Lastly, the Sultan wishes to welcome the Christian Crusader-Kings to his lands. Any would-be Emperors of Rome and Kings of a barley-existant Island Kingdom shall be treated generously, by the tip of an arrow and the edge of a sword. Feel free to try our hospitality.
Now, on to what General Korkut Illker sends message of. In the greatest battle of our time, the brave and righteous forces of the Konyite Sultanate have bested a 4,000 men strong Christian army, sending another Sicilian King and his Prince to an early grave, along with their mislead followers. May their false God treat them as they have deserved. The city of Naples has been torched further, as a punishment for their former rulers continued insolence. Also, swift and unrelenting, the General has seized Bari, acting as appropriate with its garrison, and brought down the castles military facilities.
Roman, it seems war is inevitable between our peoples. As I said, we shall give you the warmest of welcomes should you march to our borders. Be sure, we will have made all the festive preperations to celebrate your coming.
Sorry if I dragged on for too long, or was a bore, but such is my profession. I shall remain in this court, and if any communication is desired with the Sultan, it should go through me. '
The robust man sits, the solid oak chair whining slightly below him.

Attention! Attention!
The Glorious French Empire is now in a state of peace with all of our neighbors. The end of the war in the British Isles has brought us untold prosperity and riches, and the French soldiers who have returned to their homes to their wives and children are now feeling great joy and hope for the future. We are now making LOTS AND LOTS of beautiful French babies! THEY ARE SO CUTE don't you just want to eat them all up. Recent harvests have been bountiful, and we have more butter, wine, bread, and little itty bitty snails than you can shake a pointed stick at.
Those other nations out there who are experiencing hardship and war should follow the French example. We have skillfully used diplomacy to resolve our disputes, and with a minimum of casualties. You too can enjoy the riches and luxuries that come with peace! End your conflicts now, and send your soldiers home, good friends!
There is no need for further bloodshed! The time for peace is at hand; I say no more of this silly, knees-bent running around advancing behavior.
Be like the French, and retreat! Heed our warning now, before it is too late! An entire generation of good men can return home and make lots and lots of... well.... adequate looking children. See? I am being very generous! You should thank me!

We Magyar are simple folk and we cherish the pleasures of the good life such as fine food, wine and seeing our womenfolk heavy with child. All praise is indeed due to the French King for setting his people on the path of peace by utterly dominating his island neighbours.

Oui, mon ami. Should you wish to put down the disruptive influence of a rebellion, that is something we consider an internal matter of the Kievan crown. We have also brought peace and prosperity to the Scottish and Irish lands, where rebellious forces once ruled. Now there is no war, no insecurity, and there is the rule of law and the protection of the French Empire. These people are happier under French rule, as I am certain the rebellious Novgorodian people would surely be happier under your rule. It is only these wars between great empires, stretched over continents, which we see as a threat to our collective prosperity. Such conflicts are unlikely to be resolved decisively and will weaken all nations involved, and cause the deaths of hundreds of thousands of men, and for what? Fifty years of war and a few new castles to show for it?
Not just men, but treasuries laid waste. You would all become richer through peace and trade than through war. Armies cost money, weapons do, rations do, ships do.... you'll spend entire fortunes ripping down walls with your trebuchets only to spend another fortune rebuilding it later. What a waste, would you not say?
The French would urge the great nations of the East to resolve their destructive conflicts before things get any worse. Or, you can freely ignore our advice. It is none of our business, but we do not wish to see you suffer needlessly.

Joszef is asleep and snoring loundly. His priestly colleague Stephen rises to answer the Frank.
Our understanding is that a Turkish troop transport was intercepted in Italian waters by a Sicilian fleet which sought to impede its progress. The Turks fought their way out of the blockade, made landfall and seized the city of Napoli, slaying the Sicilian King.
This is the immediate genesis of the current conflict.
Of course tensions have been simmering for some time as the Sicilians have been in indirect conflict with the Egyptians and Turks through their war in North Africa against the Moors. Surely the Turkish troops were headed to fight the Sicilians in Moorish territory before being intercepted...

Surely you must have heard of the great swinging parties we Romans throw for all our uninvited guest, not to mention the fine Italian cuisine. I hear our seafood dishes are quite popular right now, although you really should try our steel marinated in Saracen, it’s to die for. They say nothing brings people together like sharing food. Chicken jerky?” Crowley holds up a piece of meat for the Turkish dignitaries, “The Kaiser’s dignitary left tons of this stuff; I’ll never eat it all.” Seeing that the Turks weren’t going to take him up on his offer, Crowley shrugs and takes a bite. Cringing he spits it out into a napkin and throws the rest back onto the plate, “You’re right, this stuff is disgusting.” Crowley takes a big gulp of his drink, then turning to his assistant, asks “Where was I before all of this?” Crowley waves his finger at the jerky.
His assistant, removing the plate of jerky, responds in a dull tone “I believe you were at chicken, sir.”
“Right then,” Crowley says, “well let me just wrap this up.” Pointing to the Turkish diplomats and smiling as if they were friends, Crowley declares “You know we love having you here; really, really glad you came. I mean who doesn’t love a party; a little excitement every now and then. There’s just... well... uh...” Crowley fumbles around for a moment pretending to try and find the right words, “you see... there’s a tiny little problem. We can’t let you leave. So as such, we sunk your ships off the coast of Syracuse; but on the bright side, the fish down there are going to taste excellent. The french ambassador stands and makes an announcement.
Attention! Attention!
The Glorious French Empire will now announce that we claim the Iberian Peninsula as part of our territory. You see, the whole peninsula has been in a state of war with the Moorish Muslims for quite some time now, and the French grow weary of this never-ending conflict. The Moors, already beaten, must have offered a peaceful surrender and vassalship over the years, only to be presumably ignored by the Spanish.
Now, this conflict with the Muslims has spread to Italy, where the people who follow Muhammad have now attacked good Italian men, and invaded Christian lands. And, our glorious ally, the Emperor of Rome, is now at war with the Turkish Sultanate. We see things spinning out of control; it is time for this endless war between faiths to come to an end, starting with the Spanish-Moorish conflict.
A state of war now exists between France and Spain. A Spanish castle and several forts are now under French Imperial rule, and the whole of the Western Mediterranean sea and the waters north of Spain now belong to the French Navy. The Spanish fleet was sunk by half and the rest have scurried from battle, with few French losses.
The Spanish rebels are commanded by their new lord and conqueror to cease and desist all hostile actions toward our friends and allies the Moorish muslims, as well as call off any planned or current hostilities with the Ayyubid Caliphate. Those who follow The Book must remember its message of peace.
Look to the English and the French; when differences could not be settled with words, swords were used. But, very quickly our two kingdoms were able to come to an accord, and now we are strong and friendly allies. Why was this not possible between the Spanish and the Moors?
The French are known for being somewhat arrogant. I unclog my nose at anyone who thinks like zees. But it is the height of arrogance for the Spanish King to leave his entire territory unprotected, and continue conquering a beaten foe, leaving his homes vulnerable to invasion. Now his arrogance has plunged all of Europe into war between Christians and Muslims and the French are tired of it.
Our allies the Romans and the Sicilians have every right to defend themselves, and we support them in this matter. But the Spanish are not victims, they are the aggressors, and they will submit to French rule and there will be peace in the West at last. It is time for the killing to stop, and for the West to stand as one.
Such a show of force, and perhaps, some compassion towards our Muslim neighbors, may convince them to re-think war with Christendom. Perhaps they will offer the Sicilians and the Romans a diplomatic solution to this struggle. Perhaps not. It is not really our business to intrude on the affairs of our allies. However, the war on our southern border has been going on since before the New Era of France began, and even now, the conquering "heroes" of Spain refuse to stop this war.
Are the French next? There is nowhere for the Spanish to go but to attack us next, and they have plenty of castles and cash to do it. The Spanish must now demonstrate they understand the path to peace as well as the path to war. We offer the Spanish the following terms of vassalage:
1. You will immediately and unequivocally disarm and stand down from all conflicts that are not defensive in nature. Which means, you will not declare any new wars, and you will withdraw all forces from foreign territory.
2. You will immediately return all of your forces to Southern Spain, where you belong.
3. You will declare the Emperor of France, England, Scotland, Ireland, and Aragon, to be your supreme lord and master, and immediately and unconditionally surrender. The Spanish King will become a feudal vassal to the French Emperor.
4. We will give you a list of Spanish provinces that will come under the direct control of France immediately, and you will withdraw all military forces from French territory and French Imperial waters.
5. You will identify all spies in French territory and give us your word that they will withdraw immediately, and any violation of this condition will mean war.
6. You will report to the French Emperor for further instructions.
7. If you do not agree, then we will be force you to surrender on the field of battle, where your scattered, exhausted, defenseless forces have absolutely no chance of defeating the French First, Second, Third, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Imperial Armees, and the First, Second, and Third Imperial Navies.
8. You will agree that the (very few) lives lost in the battle to take some minor castle whose name escapes me at the moment, and the lives lost at sea during this season's hostilities represented the fall of Spanish aggressors, and will receive no compensation for their losses.
We wish to announce that we asked for and received the blessing of the Emperor of Rome, and of course the Ayyubid Caliphate, and consulted with some of our other allies before taking this action. It was not a unilateral decision, in fact, the Emperor of Rome was also set to invade Spain with us before the Turkish Sultan made an attack on Italy.
The French do not take unilateral action, nor do they make this decision to break diplomatic ties with Spain lightly. We respect our allies and our agreements, but the Spanish threat has been growing and growing, and they were not satisfied with merely defeating the Moors in battle and taking some of their territory: They sought to wipe out the Moorish Muslims and even now threaten to obliterate them from existence.
These aggressors must realize their days of conquest are over, or they must demonstrate a level of cunning on the battlefield unparalleled in history. Should the Spanish win this day, against the French army, then we will withdraw from their territory, beaten but not defeated, and respect their skills in battle and their claims against the Moors. Until such day, we do not respect their claims against the Moors, and we do not consider their occupation of Moorish Africa to be legitimate, and we will consider the lands of the Iberian peninsula which have been undefended for a decade to be under constant threat of retaliation from the Muslims who have been aggrieved by the Spanish king.
As such, French forces are now moving to protect the lives of the Spanish peasantry from further attacks. The Spanish have left their doors wide open for us, and they obviously wish to be ruled by France, and they obviously respect French culture as being superior to their own, otherwise they would not have invited us to come and stay. We will protect the Spanish people from retribution for the war crimes of the Spanish King against the Muslim people, but at the same time we must demand his immediate surrender and cessation of hostilities against the Muslim people, or else there can be no peace between Muslims and Christians.
To the Spanish people: we who are French will stand side by side with you as brothers in arms, and defend you against any foe, including your former overlord the King of Spain. Lay down your arms, and all bloodshed will end, and you will return to your homes and finally experience the peace you richly deserve, just as the French enjoy.
To the Spanish King: We will hear your response to our terms of vassalage, or this war will continue until your line has been permanently ended. You would be wise to accept our terms, because we can easily take that which we ask for in the next few seasons with or without your consent, and if you have not responded positively to our request, then we will not stop there, and you will face the same fate you would have delivered to the Moors: Total Annihilation.
You have exactly one season to respond, or face the consequences.
All Hail the Glorious Emperor, Sun-God Askthepizzaguy, Eternal Ruler of France!
GOD BE PRAISED!!!

The Kieven looks skeptical about the Frenchman's claims of bringing peace to the West
I doubt your methods sir, and I fear you will only continue the chain of war that has engulfed the west for so long, but these matters are not my business, and I will not pretend to know all the circumstances which have led to this conflict.
God be with you, whoever is in the right.

The Frenchman bows respectfully to the Kievan, and responds to his concerns.
Factually speaking, the Spanish would be committing suicide if they were to continue any war against any power besides the French. As we speak, their ability to wage war against anyone else here has ended. This is now an internal matter of the French Empire, and if the Spanish King wishes to keep his head, he will agree to a peace treaty and there will be no more conflicts between his people and anyone else.
This is the only way to stop a conquering army; to defeat them on the field of battle or make war completely unpalatable. I predict that in a few short seasons, the Spanish will either be beaten into submission or they will have surrendered on their own. Had we not intervened, war would have continued to burn through Africa, and the ever-growing Spanish Empire would have become a threat to anyone on her border. Now, their blade has been broken. They must re-forge their destiny, under the hammer and anvil of the French Imperial army, or accept the terms of peace offered to them.
If anyone wonders whether the French will keep their word, they need only look to the English, who have not only flourished but expanded in size under French protection. We gave our word to Sicily and other nations that they will not be harmed, and now England and France stand as one. Rather than destroy the Spanish, we are offering them a chance to thrive once more, but it is through peace, not war, that it is possible. Otherwise it will be war which is their undoing.
It's a simple choice, really. I ask for a few seasons to demonstrate the legitimacy of what I am saying. Then, your skepticism will be proven premature, good sir from Kiev.

Ah, but the chief source of my skepticism is that the French are doing just what you accuse the Spanish of doing. True you are letting your enemies survive, but not without annexing much of their territory. The French crown itself is becoming very strong through these wars. Think what you would do should you be neighboring yourself. Would these conflicts not appear to be a way of subtly gaining power. It looks as though, "the ever-growing French Empire has become a threat to anyone on her border,"
while hiding it under the guise of bringing peace and stability.
I would love to believe that you will hold true to your word, and only attack those that fight unjust wars, but it hard to say which conflict you will next call unjust. If the Romans are successful in their fight, your actions so far suggest that you would stab them in the back, claim half their lands, and say it was necessary for peace.
In short, you are attempting to be the moderator of peace, but it looks more like you are simply serving your own aims.
Although what I have said may sound harsh, I do not wish for relations to be bad between our peoples, the matters of the west are really not our concern, I am simply concerned by your actions, Sir Frenchman.
I do hope that my concerns will be proven wrong, and I will remember your words here and do what I can to hold you to them. God be with you, and prevent you from letting power get the better of you!

The Frenchman replies:
If territory is all we were after, surely we wouldn't have offered peace in the first place, and immediately, nor bothered to make England our vassals. French forces could have simply taken all of England with ease. We are not here to wipe out our neighbors, as the Spanish are trying to do. That is a clear and real difference, and forgive me for saying so, but of all the nations here, I have not seen such mercy shown anywhere else. The French are without a doubt the most peaceful of the nations who have gone to war, and the quickest to make peace out of all of them. Those are the facts.
As for holding some of Spanish land; this is to create a disincentive for Spain to go back on their word and declare war on France in the future, as we will have a buffer zone and hold a superior army as a result. If we wanted to, we have the blessings of every neighboring nation to simply take all of Spain for ourselves, and since we have the power to do so, it is only French generosity and a CLEAR demonstration of our magnanimity that we do not.
I do take exception to your words where you suggest the Emperor of Rome has reason to fear France now. Did you not hear us when we said that Rome was going to invade Spain with us? That we have their blessing? I ask you not to try to create unfriendliness between France and our closest and most loyal ally, the Roman Empire. France considers itself to be an extension of the Roman Empire in the West, we are like brothers. That you would imply such a rift is unsettling to us, and we question your intentions there. Do you seek to ask legitimate questions, or is there something inherently hostile in what you're saying?
If I have misinterpreted your intentions, let me know, friend.

I do simply mean to ask questions, and certainly did not wish to create any hostility between you and Rome. I was not quite correct on my beliefs about your agreement with Rome. I had thought they simply did not threaten war with you if you attacked the Spanish, I did not know you had their blessing. Apparently I have had some misconceptions of my own for I had thought that both you and Rome were in fact allies of Spain and were supporting their war against the Moors. If this is not true, I stand corrected.
I truly do not wish to appear hostile, I just was very concerned by what I had thought was a sudden attack on an ally of France. For I had also not known that the Spanish had been in contact with you and refused to peaceably halt their war.

Crowley, back to his normal self, speaks up, “Neither Rome nor the German people have ever been an ally of Spain. Although we supported their cause for a time, my Lord has been ever wary of the constant instability in the region. With the growing aggressiveness of the Turks and what seemed to be the inevitability of war, my Lord agreed with the French that we would need stability at our back if the threat in the Far East was ever realized.”
Crowley stops and laughs to himself, “And to think, all the ways it could have gone. We could be fighting Turks on Spanish fields right now, or stuck over there while they just now begin their invasion of Italy; probably have run over half our Italian regions before we could have responded. On the other hand, they could have attacked just a bit sooner and we’d all be sitting around sipping wine and laughing at how they almost got a foot hold. I could curse you darn Saracens for your timing, but then I guess I’d also have to thank you too. So be it”
Crowley raises his glass, “To the Turks! Not great timing, but good; we can work with good.”
Some time after, Crowley has a talk with one of his assistants. (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?117453-Cry-quot-Havoc!-quot-SS6.2-Hotseat-Story-Thread&p=2053224721&viewfull=1#post2053224721)
