The Mafia's comeback

He looked up at the blue sky. It was a very nice day, early Spring. The sort of day on which his father used to take him out to go fishing. He remembered those days as about the happiest ones in his childhood. Not that he liked fishing. In fact, as a child, he found it a pretty boring sport. "Sport". Ha! Sitting down for a whole day and just waiting for a fish to bite. No, he loved those occasions, because his father used to tell him awesome stories.

There was this one story his father loved to tell him. And he loved hearing it again and again. It was about a boy named Richie.

Richie was a fat kid, living in his father's town Gameroomville. He was the son of a butcher, named Luciano. Luciano was an Italian immigrant, a hard working man, who paid his weekly contributions to the local mobster, Don Patino.

Don Patino had a son, Vincenzo. Vincenzo wasn’t exactly the brightest bulb, but he was his fathers’ son, so nobody dared to touch him. Vincenzo knew this and he enjoyed his status. He was a bully and Richie, the fat kid, often was his target. Every time Richie walked by Richie and his friend, they called him names. Sometimes they pushed him away and when Vincenzo was in a bad mood, Richie got punched and kicked.

They also did practical jokes with Richie. Just like his father was a hard working man, Richie was a good student who did his best at school. He loved reading and could often seen walking around with books, he bought with the money he earned helping his father in the butcher shop during the week-ends.

One day, Richie made the mistake of walking through Vincenzo’s street with his newly acquired books. Vincenzo and his friends forced Richie to stop. They punched him in the face and of course, Richie dropped his books. That day, Vincenzo took things a bit further than usual. Two of his friends forced Richie to watch while Vincenzo urinated on his books. But this wasn’t enough for Vincenzo, no. After that, he lit a cigarette and he threw the match on the books. They caught fire.

Richie yelled “Noooo!” and this was reason enough for Vincenzo to kick one of the burning books in Richie’s face. The child’s face got scarred for life.

Being the coward he was, deep in his heart, Vincenzo ran away, his friends with him.

A year later, Richie walked through Vincenzo’s street again. The Dons’ son grinned and his friends walked up to Richie, planning to give him the usual treatment. But Richie wasn’t there to be bullied again. He pulled a handgun and pointed it at Vincenzo.

Two days later, a 14 year old kid killed Don Patino.

From that day on, Gameroomville was no longer terrorised by mobsters. Richie's tradition was continued and this particular neighbourhood never got terrorised by the mafia again, until...

This was little Santino’s favourite story and he smiled while remembering it.

It were his last thoughts before the silenced gun finished him with a bullet between his eyes.

The mafioso looked down on the body and started shaking his head. “I liked you, I really did. But we can’t allow people standing up against us.”

He shrugged and stepped back in his car. His colleague nodded in approval and both men drove away quickly, leaving the body uncovered.

Day 1

Chief of police Andres read the report with a worried look on his face. The news that the mafia was in town would probably be a disaster for the regular deliveries of Belgian beer in this small town. Sure, he had enough booze in his cellar to survive a few World Wars, but still, it was worrisome.

He never understood why they made him chief of police of this small town, some told him it was because he was good at swinging sharp objects around and in making things swing from a rope.

He picked up the manual "How to be a completely incapable chief of police and doing minimal damage" and particularly liked the chapter where it was explained how to let the townies figure it out themselves and doing nothing more than what he was good at: lynching people and drinking beer.

He started to prepare his opening speech, but not after opening his third bottle of Duvel. After all, breakfast was the most important meal of the day.

***

Welcome to "The Mafia's Comeback", a large VANILLA mafia game:

The set-up is pretty simple:

- 30 players MAX;
- 2 mafiosi who get 2 kills each night;
- no detective or other pro town role;
- roles are not revealed upon lynching;
- mafia needs to provide the host at least a schematic kill write-up;
- 24 hours night and day phases;
- dead players are allowed to talk in the thread;

For those not familiar with mafia gaming, I'll explain the basic rules. In this game, this are the only rules you need to know, which makes this perfect as an introduction for new players:

Basic mafia rules

There are two sides in this game: the townies and the mafia.

The townies are the innocent people and they have to lynch the mafiosi during the day. The mafiosi have to kill a set number of townies each night (in this game, the mafia has two kills each night, regardless of with how many they are. This means that if one mafioso is lynched, the mafia will still have the ability to kill two players each night). When all mafiosi are lynched, the town wins. When all townies are dead, the mafia wins.

Each day or night phase will last approximately 24 hours. This may be extended or shortened due to real life circumstances of the host (that's me).

The townies have to decide during the day by voting who will get lynched. The person with the most votes, will be lynched.

Votes have to be made like this:

Vote : Andres

When you want to switch your vote, you have to do it like this:

Unvote : Andres ; Vote : Ser Clegane

Please remember to BOLD YOUR VOTES! UNBOLDED VOTES WILL NOT BE COUNTED! No exceptions will be made. Also, REMEMBER TO UNVOTE BEFORE SWITCHING YOUR VOTE; if you forget to unvote, your vote switch will be ignored.

Notes:

* You're allowed to vote "abstain"; voting "no lynch" will be counted as an abstain vote.
* When a tie is reached at the end of the day, the game host will randomly (as in "completely at random") lynch one of the players in the tie. In short: there will always be a lynch at the end of the day phase.
* regardless of your role, you are supposed to be active in the thread. Severe inactivity (no strict rule, but you can take not posting for 6 RL days in a row as a basic rule) will be dealt with by WoG ("Wrath of God") which basically means that you'll be killed by the host in a most humiliating way.
* If you can no longer play for whatever reason, please inform the host and he'll try to find a replacement. If no replacement can be found, you will be written out of play (honorable suicide).

Game is now open for sign-ups !

Maybe something along the lines of "participate in every round after dead and you're allowed to vote in the final round" ?

I dunno.

I think they should be allowed to talk, but killing active players is/was a possible tactic, in the hope that they would cease activity/be less active. Not an honourable one, but even so.

Let the town have the option of, after the lynch, select one player who hasn't voted and/or has only made one post that day be lynched as well? Just a thought :3

I'll work on the opening write-up and hopefully this will go in sign-up phase next Saturday. Won't start before Tuesday though, because of Carnaval.

Night 1

He was hungry. But he was too afraid to leave his home. He had heard rumours about the mafia having infiltrated the neighbourhood. It was dangerous outside and he could get killed. But he was hungry.

Looking around his appartment, he saw this piece of paper on a table. He looked at it. Aha! The phone number of Mizza Mut! Perfect!

He picked up his phone, dialed the number and ordered a large pepperoni pizza.

Only 20 minutes later, the doorbell rang. A man, sweating, he clearly had done his best to get the delivery to Death is yonders’ place fast, was standing in the door.

“Here you go, sir, a pepperoni pizza. And the bill of course.”

Death is yonder looked at it.

“What? 2.50 $ for the delivery? Thief! Since when is a pizza driver charging the customer? I tip when I’m satisfied, it’s not done to demand a tip like this!”

The pizzaguy looked pretty desperate and murmured “not another one.”

“Sir, it’s the official…”

“Thief!”

“It’s technically not a tip, it’s for Mizza Mut. I don’t get nothing…”

“Lies! Take your money and go away! You’re no better than a mafioso extorting honest people.”

After putting seven locks on his door, DiY finally sat down to eat his expensive pizza.

Enjoying the meal, he didn’t notice the dark shadow behind him.

“You should’ve tipped the man, cheapskate.”

“Huh?” was the last word DiY ever spoke before the man strangled him to death with a garotte.

***

Askthepizzaguy was angry. No, not angry, furious. What a :daisy: his last customer was. “I hope you suffocate in your pizza, you :daisy:!”

Walking back to his car, he noticed a man, wearing a fedora.

“Hello, good sir, I see you work for Mizza Mut.”

“Yeah, I’m a slave of those crooks.”

“You need to drive your own car and pay for your fuel?”

“Yeah, that’s what they make me do. You almost need to pay to be allowed to work for them.”

“I see,” the man wearing the fedora said, nodding.

“Anyway, I need to go, still 4 deliveries to make.”

“But, I have a present for you,” the man with the fedora said.

“A present?”

“FREE GASOLINE!” the mafioso yelled and he poured a bucket of gasoline over Askthepizzaguy.

“Are you nuts?” Pizza yelled.

“NEED A LIGHT???” the man said, throwing a burning match to Askthepizzaguy.

While the flames consumed the screaming ATPG, the man ran away, laughing hysterically.

***

Day 2

Chief of Police Andres took a seat on the balcony from which he could talk to the citizens of Gameroomville.

"Dear citizens of Gameroomville. We have found the dead body of DiY, who was killed while eating in his own house. He was eating a Pepperoni pizza from Mizza Mut. We're not sure if that's what killed him, but we advice you not to order anymore Mizza Mut pizza's until the mafiosi are caught. Not that you'll be able to order pizza at Mizza Mut, since their only driver, Mister Askthepizzaguy, has been consumed by fire. We're not sure if it was caused by eating one of his own pizza's. Anyway, it is clear that mafia have infiltrated Mizza Mut. We need to stop this threat here and now! When I'm drunk, I order pizza. Now, I can no longer order pizza. Which means I have to drink even more than I use to, so that I get so drunk that I'm not even hungry anymore. Which is great, of course. All hail the Mafia!!!

Ehm, I mean, we need to find that scum. Find out among each other who the mafia is. I'll try to stay sober until the end of the day and will lynch the evil mafioso you will certainly catch. Now, if you'll excuse me, my beer is getting warm."

That said, the Chief of Police disappeared.

2) By your logic Nictel is also scum, why not vote him.

Personally I think that the scum would wait for something like what I did with my vote and pounce on that person as they would then gain suspicion for going after the obvious choices.

After all, by your reasoning, there's not a better suspect at this point in the game. Which means that you either a) are scared of going out on a limb and outright voting me this early in the game, or b) don't actually believe that I'm suspicious.

Again, I urge you to read the pre-game banter. I say exactly what I say now. I like ATPG and I wanted to play with him last game, unfortunately he was lynched early and I died later on in the same game. I still want to play a game with him past the first day. He was lynched on the first day and I defended him with shameful fanboyism. I said that he better not die early because in every game I've played with him I too have died. This was meant as a joke, take it however you wish.

Why this is so important to you I have no idea. And the above text is just a repetition of my shorter version a few posts ago. It says everything but somehow you want more.

Day 2

The day was coming to an end. It had been a sunny day with splendid weather. Chief of Police Andres had been spending time with his beloved ones: a crate of Duvel and a crate of Westmalle Trippel.

He stumbled outside of the Police building and walked over to the execution platform, where he saw Jolt and dcmort93 standing, trembling in fear.

Andres picked a die out of his pocket, murmured something about random day 1 lynches, then he said: "1,3 or 6 means Jolt dies, 2, 4 or 5 means dcmort93 dies." He paused and looked at dcmort93. "Whatever happened with the other 92 dcmorts?".

He rolled the die and it showed: 1. dcmort93 fell on his knees and starting to thank the Gods of random, the Chief of Police, his mother and his three hot nieces for learning him... stuff.

In the meanwhile, Jolt was still standing, angry and in tears.

“Why have the gods forsaken me? Why, oh why? Why did they randomly pick me and not dcmort? Or this drunken excuse for a chief of police?”

Andres gave the man a firm look.

“I beg you pardon?”

“I didn’t mean it that way! Oh please, have mercy, have mercy, oh you allmighty” BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

Four shots of his Magnum .357 ended Jolts’ laments.

“I don’t know if he was scum or not, and frankly I do not care. NOBODY… DISRESPECTS… ME!!”

Andres took a deep breathe and sipped from his last Westmalle Trippel of the evening.

“Good night, ladies and gentlemen.”

He left the execution platform.

Your post implied otherwise, actually; "you fail to see simple things" come across as calling someone dumb. :/

You are misinterpreting me. I meant exactly what I wrote. There were no implied meanings or trying to come across saying something else.

In the hindsight it was looks like Mafia were acting scummy. The fact was that noone even suspected of anything I did until Sasaki thought something was off.

Anyways, B_Ray and Believer look by far the most scummy to me.

ATPG gave me the link and I was just reading it from the view of an objective outsider. I had no idea who was mafia until the writeups.

EDIT: If it makes you feel better, I don't think you are mafia in this one.

Why didn't you abstain?

I guess I could have. Doesn't really seem to fit the spirit of the game, to me. Apart from the ongoing Pokemon-themed game hosted by Chaotix, the last time I played a true Mafia game was back in 2006, when it was just getting started on these forums. I don't think abstaining was even an option then. But regardless, I was going to use Random.org to select a lynchee (which you'll see I did in Chaotix's game just last week on the first round of play; I didn't realize that was a common practice at the time, and thought I was being rather original :beam:) anyway. But when I saw that ByzantineKnight had already done exactly what I intended to do, I figured why not go with his result. A diviner doesn't read the bones / roll the dice / boil the leaves a second time just because he didn't particularly like the first outcome; there would be no point in using the method if you're going to do that. I'm not that superstitious, by any means, mind you, but I didn't see a point in doing my own randoming when it had already been done.

I understand that its better to go off logic rather than random chance when selecting a lynchee, but this is only the first day. All we have to go off of is who got killed by the mafia. I don't know anything about Death is Yonder. Askthepizzaguy is currently playing Chaotix's game and Cops & Robbers, which is all the contact I've had with him. He did vote for my character in MewTew's Revenge, at which point I thought he had broken a tie (turns out I had counted the votes wrong anyway) so I declared him my enemy, which is why I made the joke about having him assassinated before Night 0 in this game. I realize the fact that it actually happened makes me look like a mafioso - but if I really was, why would I draw attention to the fact just before actually doing it?

Either I'm that dumb or I was hoping to make it look like I'd been framed. If anyone thinks either of those scenarios is likely, I'm not gonna argue about it.

Night 2

Csargo was smoking his pipe, sitting in his garden, while cleaning his good old trustworthy shotgun.

An inhabitant of Gameroomville passed by and noticed how Csargo was busy.

"Nice weapon you have there."

"Thanks. It has saved my life on many occasions."

"I'm sure it did. But with the mafia having infiltrated our town, you might want to have something bigger and stronger."

"Nope, my shotgun will do just fine."

"Maybe you'll change your mind after I've given you a demonstration with my..."

"Look, I don't care, allright? I'm not interested in your demonstration. I have all I need right here," he said, and he picked up his shotgun and showed it to the intruder.

"A pity," the mysterious person said and he instantly kneeled down, holding an M249 SAW and aiming it at Csargo's head.

"What the :daisy:"

"BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM BLAM"

An obscene amount of bullets reduced Csargo's head to an unrecognisable bloody mess.

"No swearing in Gameroomville," the mafioso said.

***

Yaseikhaan was eating a plate of spaghetti bolognaise in the local restaurant.

"Antonio" was the best Italian restaurant in Gameroomville. Heck, it probably was the best Italian in the entire US of A.

He ordered a second bottle of Chianti and hardly looked up when it arrived within a minute. You never had to wait long in "Antonio".

Without giving it a second thought, he poured some wine in his glas and moved it to his lips.

He sipped from the wine, paused, put the glas down and continued eating.

He was enjoying his meal so much, that he didn't notice the mafioso with the garrotte sneaking up to him.

With a cruel grin, the mafioso strangled 'khaan to death.

***

Day 3

Chief of Police Andres was standing on a high platform.

"Ladies and gentlemen, we had two deaths again tonight. The first one was Csargo, who got killed for not wanting to buy a new gun and swearing. The second victim of the mafia was Yaseikhaan. The owner of "Antonio", Mister Wi Fung Lang, has urged you all to find the killers ASAP, since they ruined the reputation of his restaurant."

Without further hesitation, the townies began their discussions.

Speculation? I dunno. Pointing fingers based on who died at this stage seems no better than a shot in the dark. It's like saying "Sasaki would never kill Askthepizzaguy right away". It makes no sense. Of course he would, and anyone would.

But, don't let me stop the discussion. Let the speculation commence. If you manage to hit the right target based on that, then I will eat my silver mask. By the way, I've been forced to eat a lot of things based on similar statements, so by all means call me on it.

@ATGP: Regarding what I said earlier, the write up is almost exactly what you said in that CFC OT thread and I don't recall seeing Andres over there. So unless you made a very similar statement over here, then one of the mafia has to be from CFC OT. In that thread you discussed how your charged by your employer for each delivery and often your tips don't cover that cost and the write up is very similar to that. There are other similarities too, hence my curiosity about where else you've complained about that.

And a reasonless vote seems I found two mafia already!

Lets start with B_Ray for his lack of explanation and for putting forward really dumb arguments. Oh and that OMGUS.

You don't consider that defensive? Accusing two players (the other being Greyblades) of being mafia as soon as they vote for you? Insulting the intelligence of my decision? Accusing me of "OMGUS" voting?

To answer your question, here's what I considered suspicious:

Never been that easy: Vote: B_Ray
This because I jokingly "voted" for Pizza to be assassinated before the game had even been started. And I've stated my reason for this on page 7, if one was even needed. Maybe you were just joking, but I would certainly think it was obvious that a mafioso wouldn't publicly declare his target immediately before killing them.

Bit strong reaction or not? Hmm YOU MAFIA?!
Nothing terribly wrong with this; he just seems super eager to point suspicion at whoever he can. This comment was directed at dcmort93, though, who had already drawn suspicion from others.

Ah it is going to be one of these games. You know what. These kind of games only harm the town: Unvote; Vote GeneralHankerchief
This was in response to General saying that he "had a town to mislead", which I think was an obvious joke, so voting for him seems ridiculously unnecessary.

Now in my own defence: Nictel, just before I voted for you, 2 of the 3 previous voters had gone for dcmort93, with somewhat good reasoning. If I were a mafioso, why in the world wouldn't I just hop on the bandwagon? Or remain silent for a little longer, and pick some other less controversial vote? Nobody had even mentioned me since that one off-hand vote you made at the very beginning of the game, and you even changed it before the Day ended. So if I was just worried about getting caught, why would I bring it up again later when nobody had even said anything about it? Does this seem like a sound strategy for deflecting attention from myself?

The reason I voted for you is for the posts you made which I quoted above. Earlier today, I scanned through all the previous posts since Night 0 and tried to pick out anything that looked fishy. Your posts stood out to me, though no doubt amplified by the fact that you had voted for me. I admit that much. But I didn't vote for you out of pure "OMGUS" sentiments.

Any other questions?

ByzantineKnight

It really sounds to me like you're trying to nudge the town's vote while remaining out of the spotlight here. The first time you brought this up no one really paid attention, so you bring it up again. If it was really important enough for two posts when the first one was disregarded I think you probably would have done the dirty work and come up with a list of players who had been in that game.

But instead you are trying to nudge the town in the direction of the players in that game without remaining in the spotlight. And to make matters worse, you won't even start voting for one of those players but instead hop on a bandwagon with almost no credibility.

It sounds to me like you are mafia; you put that little (obscure) reference to a previous game on a different forum into a night kill on ATPG and when no one picked up on it you keep bringing it up (even a day later). All the while staying out of the spotlight. Very clever

And besides, who would try and put a detail into a writeup that could lead back to him/her unless they were intending to use it to mislead the town.

TL;DR Version:
Makes a big deal out of a detail in the writeup of ATPG's and yet refuses to act on it or do anything that would make him stick out to the town...

I will Vote: Methos and I would encourage everyone else to do so as well.

And also, I'm just going to assume that you were part of that game and thats how you caught that little detail so we can start on the players by voting for you. ^_^

I only follow CFC, so I wouldn't notice if he did so here. If the answer is that ATPG only posted it at CFC, then I can get a better idea of who here frequents CFC OT. If ATPG states he's posted his financial complaints about tipping and his job elsewhere, then there's no need for me to do so.
