View Full Version : Large Mafia Game Mafia vs Werewolves [Concluded]
This is a game with two evil teams - mafia and werewolves. And, of course, there would be town.
a) mafia: several guys. there are powerful individuals, with political and economical connections. They have their own dirty tricks (like roleblocking, influencing votes, etc.) but they cannot kill anyone directly
b) werewolves: there is lower number of them than mafia. They are beasts. They kill. They have some strange abilities which I do not want to describe here, but lets consider them to be minor (in comparison with killing, that is)
Town (and mafia) would have some power roles, but no 'full scanner' (cop or someone similar). There is possibility of tracker/watcher, and of other kinds of power roles (vigilante, doiuble-voter, doctor, etc.)
One unusual thing: each 'day' (voting phase) will represent first day of a week - a day of religious celebrations, a day free from work. Each 'nihght' (action phase) will represent the rest of the week. t is mostly a flavour change, but I want to use it to introduce new mechanic: phases of the Moon. At new moon, werewolves are weak - they are more vulnerable, and they cannot attack. at full moon, werewolves are potent. they can use all they special abilities and they are almost indestructible. Game starts one week before full moon.
Another unusual thing: there would be no reveal at death. But, after two days (or little less), a coroner's raport would be published. his raport would describe the cause of a death, and if body has any anomalies, it would be described either. So, if killed person is a werewolf, it would become known after two days. But, there would not be any information about deceased person being mafia or not. Additionally, there will be roles (I think about 2) which would be able to give some info about deceased character. For example, person who can check if deceased has any criminal record (all mafia will have crilminal record, but some townies also).
I will use wound system: wounded person cannot use any abilities. If wounded person is wounded again, he/she dies. Wounds of humans do not heal by themselves. They can be healed by healers or by healing potions. Werewolves heal their wounds at full moon.
This is short description of most of aspects of this game (some I do not want to reveal)
And I can assure all of you, that there are no jesters or mimes in this game

On the biggest island of archipelago called “the nest”, coalition of small city-states formed. It is in fact hard to call this a ‘coalition’: all cities pay levies to the biggest one, called Hangum.
Action takes place in one of the smallest towns on the island. Mauderville (that’s its name) is ruled by a council of merchants, magistrates and other important figures.
This peaceful town has two problems now. First, group called ‘violet order’ tries to overthrow council rule and replace it by themselves. They caused a lot of protests, and people refused to pay taxes as long as there is no stable government. Second, werewolves (or werewolf?) were seen in the town. Two weeks ago previous mayor was slain by them (or him).
Special envoy from Hangum (and his bodyguards) has come to the town today. He will surely try to bring order back to the Mauderville.

I'm planning on doing this for all new Large Games (and for any small games if requested); sort of like the advertisement announcements of the old days.
I'll see about putting this on the front page to garner more attention.
I suppose it would be nice, but I must admit I do not understand what you are talking about

Here, check the Frontpage (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/content.php).
Now, anyone coming directly to the Org will see that your game is now in Sign-Ups, and there's a link right in the article. Suffice to say it should be at least a moderate boost to interest in this game, particularly in terms of new members.
If you'd like me to edit that to say anything different or more specific, just let me know.

Listen, members of the council. We have a problem. Your town is not paying us the money we demand. We have heard about your troubles with a group that wants to usurp power over town for themselves. For us, it makes no difference who will rule this town. But his rule must be strong. So, we will stay here for as long as needed. Each week, you will chose one person from members of this council, and we will banish them from this land. We will repeat it for as long as needed for leaving only one group vying for power.
As for your second problem… We will help you. Werewolves are creatures of chaos, and we will not allow them to spoil our profit.
Day 1 begins!
It is first, holy day of Week One! During this week, moon is in waxing phase. (Night one will represent the rest of Week One)

You do have to vote for me to save yourself if it comes down to that. In a game with this many scum, it's irresponsible not to do so. That said, it would be the sole reason I'd be voting for you if I have to do so. I also detest not being able to choose my own target.

More importantly, the town needs to lynch decisively. Maybe it is not important this phase...since we dont know what kind of vote influencing is possible.

decisive lynches are all well and good, when there's something worth deciding on. That said, the 37-person wagon or whatever it was I saw in the Star Wars game I hosted is a waste of time. It's not essential for everyone to wagon. A clear leader by three or four votes is plenty, because that can be reversed if new evidence come to light. Guilty people don't being more guilty or deader by a larger wagon, and a large wagon doesn't do a whole lot of good on an innocent person. Generally speaking, the further apart the lynch leader is from the runner-up, the less control the average voter has over the lynch, and since town pretty much only has the lynch as a weapon, mega-wagons favor scum and hurt analysis or tactical options.
Askthepizzaguy
05-31-2012, 09:45
Speaking of, this is getting into mafia theory. I propose a theory for you all to chew on-
A lynch by three or four votes (possibly higher, depending on the situation) is plenty as mentioned. Reversing a wagon of 10 or more is nigh-impossible with people's RL schedules and tendency to vote once-twice a day at most, plus the time limit.
As such, a pro-town voting procedure, not an enforceable rule but a "pro-town custom", might be the following.
Everyone places a vote to nominate someone for death. The nomination process requires you to choose someone who has been nominated three times or less.
You may, however, voice that you'd really rather nominate X, but X has already been sufficiently nominated, so you're going along with this procedure for the sake of cooperation.
Once the nomination process is complete, say halfway through a day phase, people place their votes on the people they really would like to see dead. However, once a leader has been established, say by having a clear plurality of the votes, it would be considered customary to not pile-on the leader, but to simply vote abstain and suggest that they are consenting to the leader's lynch.
Then, the leader can be reversed with ease, by a few persons, specifically the persons voting for that wagon, likely their main accusers. If their main accuser has reversed their opinion, it's likely due to a reveal of some kind, or new evidence brought to light, or someone else looking more guilty.
Should voting shenanigans take place, abstainers can then place an actual vote and ensure that the majority opinion still wins.
The purpose of all this: instead of pressuring one or two candidates at the beginning of a round and having, at most, 2-3 choices per round, most of them likely to be townies, the nomination process puts pressure on several candidates for death, and we will also see who supports whom for death out of those candidates. More information for the analytical player, and more information for the voter who thinks X is scummy but has no idea who else thinks X is scummy.
Finally, huge voting blocs won't be necessary for town to "change its mind". The accusers merely need to change their mind. Probably also explain why they changed their mind. As such, the vote will always be more dynamic, and any voted scumbag will always be just a couple votes away from death. Almost anyone can decide the round against them, making the average townie voter far more powerful. Vanilla townies can end up being decisive instead of just vote number 8 on lynchee of the day.
I would argue that this customary procedure would be almost exclusively pro-town, and that the anti-town forces who attempt to take advantage of the closer votes will have to do it more openly and nakedly, which is also pro-town.

Yeah its a tie.
Town council members disputed whole day. At the end, two leading candidates emerged, namely Atheotes and Visorslash. They standed before the envoy.
'I see you cant decide yourself' - envoy from Hangum said, sitting comfortable between his two huge bodyguards. 'And waiting for your decision was boring. I need some entertaining. I also thing that exiling one of you would be... insufficient. We cant allow members of one of factions plot at exile. Killing would be better. More... final.'
'Today, I will let Barg, my older bodyguard decide. Stand up, Barg. Pick one of them'.
Barg walked slowly toward the accused council members. "This one looks BAD. Wanna kill this one' he said, and plunged his knive into Visorslash's heart.
Visorslash is dead!
As you remember there is no immediate info about dead characters
'Take his body to the basement. We should examine it and check if it is one of the werewolves. Good council members, we will meet at the begining of the next week'.
Night 1 begins!

I told him to do what he had to do to survive.
Then he told me he had a role, didn't say exactly what it was. We had a conversation, he didn't fully reveal. I tried to get the lynch off of him but without having to reveal. He did tell me he was planning to reveal by the end of night one for whatever reason. I can't speak for him on that. I did ask him not to.

I buy the bit about Visor being a dead role - probably something pro-town and powerful given the disappointment and general reticence to reveal. The rest I'll take with some bread and a nice piece of cheese.

The pro-town power role thing would also fit with Visors disgust at Monty labeling him scum.

You are more wrong then murder.
EDIT: That's probably offensive. Apologies.
I would guess that the mafia have roleblockers and vote bribers and bus drivers, they need the ability to disguise themselves. Godfather roles as well are a possiblity. Werewolves can probably kill throgh roleblocks on full moon.

Well, werewolves get two kills during the Time of White Power.
Also, immunity to tied-lynch.
This post strikes me as odd.
It is; I told the unter-claw not to draw suspicion to himself, but I suppose the blood fever got to him.
I decided that I will tell you that:
some roles are doubled at this game (the are two characters with exactly the same role). Some others are almost doubled (two characters with very similar roles with very similar names). But majority of roles are for one person only

Chaotix was sleeping. He was dreaming about a perfect seed. Yellow, maybe a little beige. Hard. Just perfect. He imagined whole mountain of such grain. He reached and tried to grasp some, but something awaken him. Someone was sitting at his chest!
That was the last meaningful thought. Later, there was only blood and pain.
At other house, miner’s guild master was also sleeping. But his dream was light. He heard something moving behind the window and woke up. He lighted a torch and looked outside. Suddenly, a huge paw hit him, leaving four bloody tracks at his arm. He waved a torch, to scare beast away. Fortunately, he managed to close the door. And escape to the cellar, with very strong trapdoor. This saved his life.
City watch marshal was patrolling the streets when something hit him in the head.
He wake up few hours later, with a terrible headache. And with a lot of blood in his hairs. He never knew what (or who) attacked him, and why he survived
‘Welcome, council members’, Jarema (yes, that is the envoy’s name) said. ‘Get to the work. We have some killing to do’.
‘And one more thing. Magistrate clerk who examined Visorslash property and documents told me, that he had criminal contacts. Maybe that will interest you’

We now know that Visorslash had "criminal contacts," which probably means he was anti-town. It's a possibility that he did not know the people he was in contact with were criminal, but considering it's still the start of the game, I find that very unlikely. So for now we can assume Visorslash was anti-town. Considering Xenoneb's suspicious behavior (trying to lynch ATPG for using "text walls" - perhaps trying to save his partner, Visorslash) I think the best thing we can do today will be to lynch Xenoneb. Vote: Xenoneb.
From description of the game:
. Additionally, there will be roles (I think about 2) which would be able to give some info about deceased character. For example, person who can check if deceased has any criminal record (all mafia will have crilminal record, but some townies also).
And, by stating that Visor had criminal contacts I meant something like this (in other words,he scanned as a 'suspicious'. All mafia and some townies are 'suspicious'). I do not want to confuse you too much.

Well, I have to admit that the Darkling and The Island games have given me a taste for human flesh :licks lips:.
On a serious note, vote: ATPG. Firstly because he tried to create a counter-wagon against Visor, which creates a plausible if tenuous case against him. Secondly, if we lynch him we can determine whether he is being a model townie or is just trying to lead us astray. ATPG has already demonstrated that he'll stay around to help after death, so that's no problem (as long as you don't wrongly accuse me of being scum again :stare:.)

The second reason you used is blatant metagaming, and I don't have anything more to say about such weak play.
The first reason you used is absolute nonsense. I helped create a counterwagon to spare Visor. Which would create a lousy case against me if townies didn't also flip criminal.
If this is you being serious, I'd hate to listen to your jokes.

Kagemusha was the main villain in the Star Wars game wherein like 30 people voted for the same person. What a boring round.
You think he's scum for asking a thoughtless question?
Usually when Kagemusha's scum I'm calling him sexy and pointing out to everyone how scummy he is.
That's a good reason! - Very 'townie' reasoning that - but not sure I see why you don't like the timing exactly. As you can see - there has been plenty of time for people to shift their votes about, and I hope it is evident why I took my vote off visorslash - it was because Monty voted him to keep atheotes alive instead of him, and I wanted to pressure Monty to talk more. So - tell me what was wrong with the timing for you please?
LazyMcCrow So, you switched your vote to abstain in order to pressure Monty to talk? It seemed to me that you were trying to reinstate the tie vote between atheotes and Visor. They were tied up until Monty's vote iirc.
Looking back now it may not have been the best reasoning, but I thought it was a decent lead for a vote on day 1.

At least we know if we catch a scumbag, they can't claim a townie power role to avoid their fate.
