Hi, may I suggest you to create one more mailbox elsewhere? If max will send some files to you, it can easily reach 1 MB size and I've heard, that size of mailbox in hotmail is only 1 MB.

If anyone know any good sites with good pictures of troops of the period in question, could you please post them. I'm particularly interested in germaninc troops.

There are some pictures of soldiers in the era of collapse on this site, it is a good resource for any other information also.

Hi all

Thanks for your appreciations

SpetzNaz.

your idea is good, but the problem is that i can upload only 1 mb by time, the new version will have more than 25 mb ... in this case i need that Duke John for instance (or someone else)will rebuild the original files organization in order to have a single downloadable file (equal to a self installer file).

about the troops pictures.

I use the Osprey Books, they are very well made.

Roysparky.
you can read Germanic Warrior AD 236-568, i think that you will find the informations you are looking for.

Besides, i need to make the Sassanian cavalry unitgraphics, i ask to SpetzNaz for help, but it seems to me that he has some problems.
So if you like to make the Sassanian cav i will be happy to use it in the game.

Steppe merc.
in the game the Sarmatians are the Bosphoran Kingdom, an old established pontic kingdom with close links with the ancient greeks and romans

Alright I'll try to make you some Sassinian cavalry I think I already have some pictures , but just in case could sombody post some links please.

roysparky
06-23-2004, 03:09
Also I have a question maximus, would like to include standard bearers and what not in the roman army. They could be like N:TW's general unit.

SpetzNatz
06-23-2004, 12:32
To Max.
In fact, I don't have any problems, but I'm in school (not at home). I'll try to do something with Sassanian cav. when I arrive home, but it will be pretty hard to alter at least 12 pics in 12 frames. Bye.

maximus decimus meridius

SpetzNaz.

Sorry, probably i didn't understand very well what you told me. So my proposal is that you will be able to make the Sassanian cavalry, and Roysparky could make the Heavy german cavalry (the original heavy cavalry unitgraphic isn't very accurate in my opinion).

SpetzNaz and roysparky what do you think about this?

.. I don't know N:TW so royspaky have you a picture about those general units?

roysparky
06-23-2004, 15:36
Maximus I have know problem doing the heavy German cavalry, but I'm going to need some pictures. I have also already began the Sassasian cavalry so if Spetz cannot create them do to school I would be happy to continue making them, otherwise I have know problem handing that job over to Spetz. As for the genral units go to this site http://www.roman-empire.net/army/army-pictures.html and look at the Vexillarius, Signifer, Aquilifer, Cornicen and
Legatus. Perhapes we could put them all in one unit or seperate them into smaller units.

Well i downloaded the mod yesterday and i've been playing all morning.
It's great the legions looked just perfect, they're also well balanced and it's very fun altogether.I started a new campaing, with the romans of course and after years of politics with the europea barbarian tribes i headed straight for constanstinople, and took it. The Byzantines ask me to end the conflict , it will help neither party
Nope, too bad. Now i got a little problem with the vandals but a little agressive negotiations will fix that.

I did do one thing to your great mod, i changed the romans color to red, just didn't feel right to have white legions. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-inquisitive.gif

Anyways, great mod i hope the next version kicks ass(can i say that?)

I cant get this mod to run at all
I downloaded the version 2.0 into a seperate file then copy and pasted everything into the MTW file, I loaded MTW and it had nothing showing about a Fall of Rome mod

and then when I downloaded 2.1 and tried to follow the directions there was no startpos to change in the campmap section what am I missing or supposed to do to even play this mod?

man I wish some one was on at this time of night to answer this

Inuyasha12

Okay, i just want to know how to do 2 things.
First i want to change the name of the bulgars to huns, how can i do that?

Second how can you change the name of a religion?, just the name nothing else.

06-25-2004, 01:39
I downloaded the Fall of Rome v2.1 into a seperate folder and copied all of its information into to MTW folder, like I did for the STW mod which then worked for STW, when I loaded the game everything except for the viking invasion campaign was gone.... everything from the regular MTW was gone

I dont where to get other files for this or maybe I have to go WAY back in the fall of rome files to get it to work but I just dont know

any advice would be great

and yea I did try to follow the directions in the thread about fall of rome but that didnt work out for me unless I missed something so I'll try it again

nope trying it again didnt do anything either

soibean, there is a readme in the download. I would suggest you read it as it contains the install directions. It is not just a copy over. Nor is it difficult.

soibean
06-25-2004, 05:38
well I read the readme for installing vs 2.00 and after following all of the instructions listed and after loading the game... nada. It didnt read any of the stuff there isnt a single part of the game that has anything to do with Rome... These are the instructions I followed:

Installation Instructions:

You need a fresh installation of Medieval - Total war VI 2.01.
THE MOD WILL OVERWRITE THE ORIGINAL FILES OF MTW-VI, so BACKUP THEM

Then:

Unzip Fall_of_Rome20_MAIN in your Medieval - Total war directory
unzip Fall_of_Rome20_Infopics_reviewpanel in your Medieval - Total war\campmap directory
unzip Fall_of_Rome20_starpos_shields_pieces_parch in your Medieval - Total war\campmap directory

unzip Fall_of_Rome20PortraitsPaganEmissary1
unzip Fall_of_Rome20PortraitsPaganEmissary2 in your Medieval - Total war\campmap\Portraits\Pagan\Emissary (create it first ) directory

unzip Fall_of_Rome20PortraitsPaganPrincess1
unzip Fall_of_Rome20PortraitsPaganPrincess2 in your Medieval - Total war\campmap\Portraits\Pagan\Princess (create it first ) directory

Unzip Fall_of_Rome20_Textures_campmap in your Medieval - Total war\Textures\campmap directory

Unzip ALL Fall_of_Rome20_men in your Medieval - Total war\Textures\men directory
Unzip ALL Fall_of_Rome20_menItems in your Medieval - Total war\Textures\men directory

those are the instructions on the readme
SOME ONE please tell me what Im doing wrong this is driving me crazy I really wanna play this mod

Inuyasha12.

in order to make the change you want to do, you must to modify the txt files in the Loc folder.

soibean.

sorry i don't understand why the mod doesn't run on your pc, the install instructions are right. maybe you could download again the files from the Org, perhaps your files are corrupted....

roysparky.

i can send you in the next days (i'm very busy these days) some pictures of german cavalry, taken from osprey book, i think that you can start from MailHcav.bif file, and modify it.
i can send you my MailHcav file with the new shields, so you should modify only the bodies of the soldiers.

Ugh, I just spent all night downloading this scenario, then unpacking it( followed the instructions to the exact, and did it again after failing the first time), and I get to the scenario maps, there is the fall of the west, and justinian the reconquest, Either one I pick, the second I hit Continue, to move on to the country selector, it crashes to the desktop, what file corruption would you attribute this to? Or is the problem something I'm doing perhaps?

Very good mod

I've finished my first campaign. The installation wasn't so easy, but I did it step by step and had no problems and no ctd during the game.

The beginning in early era for Romans is really hard Every barbarian is heading to my lands, no infrasturcture to build good units to stop them. 2 years after the start a had civil war - stayed with my cesar :) but I've lost a half of Africa and England and 4 provinces in Galia and Iberia. I've regrouped my troops and... another civil war http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

I've lost everything except italian provinces, 2 lands in Iberia and Wessex... Cool This is a challenge
I needed 15 years to take almost all provinces back (except borders - barbarians stayed there with strong armies). In 405 I had ships on almost all seas. My income grew to 21.000 per year. So I build new buildings, better troops and in 429 I won (minor victory).

The beginning is very cool, but after that game has 2 fases:
1. building defence and infrastructure to make money
2. clean all lands

I've started assault in 419, so I needed 10 years to win...

Maybe I'll try other era... Are they more difficult for Rome?

1. Absolutely marvelous job on the campaigns, units, and overall stability; NO CTD'S FOR ME https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
2. Thanks for making this great mod available to the public
3. I love how it plays Playing as the West with Barbarians surrounding you, revolts, and all the good stuff

I've recently had a civil war where a General took power as Maximus I, and it took a lot to even regain partial stability of the Empire after the civil war I just wanted to say what an awesome job that you have done, Maximus https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

07-16-2004, 08:14
Maximus, you have right - other eras are more difficult for Rome :)

I've checked it. I was more carefull so in second era I had only one civil war and needed 76 years to win.

Now I will look at the last one period as Byzantium :)

The Blind King of Bohemia
07-16-2004, 23:53
Hey max will you be adding romano british infantry? I think those boys could help counter the alemaric warbands, those boys are tough buggers.

Also i was thinking doing a faction guide for the western empire, would you mind?

uksiu
07-17-2004, 01:11
Finished.

62 years for byzantine victory.
They used to sleep on the money, so lack of good infantry it's not a big problem. I collected 325,000 when I was building units and infrastructure in all provinces. And when I was fighting with almost every neighbours, I've never had less than 270,000... Boring https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Maybe if Persians and Arabs attacked me, it could give some fun for my campaign - but they just were waiting for my army...

Strange thing: as Rome I was isolated - nobody wanted to be my ally. And allies always looking for the good moment to attack without signal. As Bizantium I had plenty of good ally, helping me in wars, and no traitors...

---

BTW: in Rum (Armenia in this mod) Byzantium has a mosque. So it makes small crash (need spacebar), because orthodox faction hasn't mosque graphic.

So I destroyed it at the beginning.

---

Very good mod I enjoyed it and I think I will back to start a new campaign - maybe as a Persians or Khazars...
But now I need to rest. https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-zzz.gif

the mod cover the period between 300AD and 600/700AD, the end of the roman western empire and the rise of the german kingdoms.

The Sword of Cao Cao.

there are a lot of new units and new factions, romans, sassanids, germans, huns, etc etc (please see the beginning of the thread) but not a new strategic map (only the names of countries are redone).

Well, not every one are born with such wisdom for managing an empire. But don't worry, I mess it up when updating to 2.1 and now I can play it right.
By thge way, anyone had played in the earlier campaing (350 was it?) at the hardest level and won it??? I'll try it again, but civil war erupted while every barbarian attacked me.

I am playing it now. The civil war erupted any way but except for MAlta and Sardinia I took back everything (but lots of building got destroyed in sieges).
The barbarians seems very quiet for me, except for the franks and the Saxons that are going to win me over Britain and the Visigoths that are building 3 big armys at my frontiers (I only lost Flanders,Austria and Croacia to barbarians).

Maximus (and the people who is working in the best mod I played!)
I'm writing so you have my impressions of the lacks of the mod that I believe are important to be fixed in the future.
I believe the enemies are not as agressive as they should be. Franks attacks Flanders, southern Britain and maybe another province and they stop atacking without a good reason (my armies where decimated and of very low quality troops). Germasn only attacked me in Lorraine at the begining, Swabia few years later, and Burgundy when I have mastered a good army!
Visigoths is almost the same, and they stop attacking in Austria when they could have easily conquest venice.
I think is not a matter of starting the game (I played it in Expert and always with romans) with a bunch of really low quality units in one side and the barbarias with lots of medium quality units on the other side.
After few years (I losted Britain excetp Wessex to my regret) I could easily start a reconquest campaing that quickly put those barbarians on their knees.
In my opinion the barbarians should have a more agressive strategic and better upgrading ability (I don't think they developed new units in the whole game).

But the diloyal of the generals (that eventually erupted in civil war) was really cool and hard to manage.

Well, that was my opinion, sorry for the english and thanks again for the mod!!

I think that you haven't right unitgraphics in the right folders, try to reinstall the 2.0 and then the 2.1 version. if it shouldn't work try to download again the 2.0.

sorry...

Empedocles.

You can't play always with the romans after the 458ad ? i'll make some tests.
anyway in the next version i'll try to make the barbarians more aggressive, for instance in some campaigns will be easier to make barbarian invasions, there will be a small economic tree for the german kingdoms in order to give them more economical resources, some new units like:

Daylami infantry (persians)
Legiones Pseudocomitatenses (rom.)
Praetoriani (rom.)
Equites catafractarii (rom.)
Romano British warbands

i'm thinking about some new german troops ....

cheers max

Maximus.
The problem I had with Romans after 458 was when I had version 2.0. Now I have 2.1 and doesn't seem to be any issue.
I believe that in order to give the barbarians more power you should unite those nations, so they can work as one.
Examples: Goths. We all know the diferences of the west and east goths, but in the end when things got ugly, they unit and rampaged trough Trhacia without hesitation.
Also I think you should remove the Lombards because they always take a number of provinces from the Germans and Franks and they wasn't that important in history.
I'm not saying you shoul remove completely the units of this nations, but they should be in the tech tree of others nations.
Well, that was almost everything. I'm now playing a new campaing with romans (I really love them!!) in expert in 430 AD. I hope it would be fun.

maximus,
I have posted few posts but I really enjoy your mod and I want to thank you for that.
But in order to be more correct in the history of Rome there are some changes I believe you should make in the 430 AD campaign.
In 429 the vandals crossed from Hispania to Africa with 80000 followers who rampaged trough all Mauritania without oposition but didn't take Carthage till AD 439. So I believe you should limit the control of the vandals to mauretania and Granada and not central Hispania, which should be given to a significant number of rebels to represent the bagaudas (don't know the traduction to english) who where bandits that consumed much of Rome, Visigoths and Franks military power in those years.
Also consider that vandals created a naval empire in few years so they should start with a number of ships.
Around those years the Huns rampaged through modern Georgia and Khazzar so you might want to add Georgia to their empire.
I saw in a long time post that you asked for a name to give to the Papal Faction and you said that you couldn't change it from campaing to campaing. So if you couldn't make the Pope be relegated to Finland you should just call that faction the "Catholic Church".
One fact that should be change is that even after the 407 invasion of Gaul and the sack of Rome in 410 the Roman Empire could restore the Rhin frontier in few years and controlled all France until the invasion of Atila in 451.
The problem with those invasion was that they devastated the economy of every country from the Po river to the English Channel, so the Empire would never have enough money to raise troops of their own and hire barbarians. Also they sacked Hispania and allowed the barbarians to establish themselves inside the empire (Vandals, Suevis, Goths, etc), but it was not until the king of the huns arrived (and with him a lot of other nations) that Rome lost control of Gaul.

Also (i'm a never satisfied customer :tomato: ) I'd like to post the starting years I believe that would be great to start play with. (I can only contribute with the Historical part because don't know shit about modding)
AD 400: With goths near Venice and an inestable truce between them and Rome. Franks and the Allemani would cross the Rhin in 7 years and Stilicho should be in the middle of this shit. Also consider to upgrade the Catle in West Italy to simbolyza Ravena that was the last bastion of the Imperator.
AD 445: Huns in Thracia, with Rome controlling only the west coast of Hispania and few provinces in Gaul. (Lorraine included).

Thanks

Diego, from Argentina

All.

it will be a 3.0 version of the mod within september 04, greater than the previous version. there will be new units (like the Pseudocomitatenses legions, Romano-british warbands, Rugian warriors, Heruli warriors, etc.), small techtree for Germans and Pagans (level 1), small economical tree for germans and 2 new campaigns; 304ad (maxentius vs. constantinus) and 470ad (the last stand of the west). besides there will be new unitgraphics for Romans and Germans. :)
Oh. i put the limit between early and high era in 475ad, now the Byzantines in the early era have the roman units and in the high era have Byzantine early medieval units such as Kataphraktoi and Stratiotai.

Empedocles.

About the Pope, i removed him from the game, so he now act as a power that excommunicates catholic factions and authorizes Crusades ... but he hasn't units or countries in the game.
about the vandal and the hun problems ..... yes you are right so i'll try to give the factions the proper start positions, also about the 400ad and 445ad i'll make some tests, and if these 2 campaigns will be funny i'll put them in the next version.

Maximus,
I'm already waiting for the release of 3.0 in September, and I encourage you to continue working in other upgrades besides RTW.
As I told you I can make a description of the historical situation in 470 and 304 to be placed in a readme or in the game so you would be more historical accurate.
For example, I was reading yesterday that Rome didn't lost control of Gaul till the first years of the 470 decade and it included the rhin frontier. Although the bandits where endemic controlling central Gaul, The kingdon of Soissons (west of flanders) was an ally of Rome and survived till 486 and the Goths have sieged Arles.
If you want I can start working in that part of the game, just tell me.

Bye

PS: Anyone knows what expansion of RTW are they working on??? (Please tell me it's the Fall of Rome)
PS: Maximus, a campaing that would be really cool (but units where different from those of 304, was one with imperator Aurelianus in 270 when Rome only controlled Italy, Africa and the Danube Frontier. Gaul was lost and in the East the Palmyra empire involved much of byzantine territory.

I have some info for you. Go to http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/nsis/nsis20.exe?download , install, go to bin folder where you installed it, rin zip2exe. Pack your mod to zip (with correct structure of folders, just like in MTW) and open that zip in zip2exe. Set parameters at will and click generate (I suggest usage lzma compression).
That's all you need to do to make installer of your mod.
And pearl at the end: I managed to pack your mod v2 (in zip about 24 - 26 MB) to 14,5 MB. I kid you not!!!

Err Manu7777, you are talking different eras completely.. This mod is late roman ie 3rd century and later. The shields you discuss are 1st and 2nd century whilst triarii and hastati are pre christian era roman and disappear with the republic. As to auxiliariues being shieldless, where do you get that from. By the time of the mod, auxiliaries are the fighting core of the roman warmachine with the legions performing 2nd line duties and auxiliaries in particular are both heavily armed and well trained as front line formed troops. My critisiscm of an otherwise excellent mod is that its 3D Roman images are 1st and 2nd century rather than the troop types depicted in the Doura wallpaintings relative to this period. By the third century ad Lorica segmentata was giving way to lighter armoured mail and leather armour once more. May i refer you to the excelllent reference books by P. Barker published by Wargames research group which are a cheap and excellent grounding to this period in particular "the Armies and enemies of Imperial Rome"
BTW My criticism of the mod is meant to be constructive. I enjoyed it a lot and indeed used some of its artwork as base for my Arthurian mod.

oldnfaded is right, the mod represents the situation at the end of the empire, 4th to 6th century ad, at that time the standard roman soldier was very different from the earlier republican legionary.

I know that there's a mod called patrician but I've downloaded it and I have an application created by WinPatch, but the problem is that this patch will not be applied in my Medieval total war installation and this is for me a real problem. That could be great if I can extract all datas from this patch.
But for the moment if we consider fall of Rome and Hellenic total war, we can create a nice mod with all the Roman units, Athenians, Macedonians, Persians, and all Barbarians factions with some of viking invasion units. If you are interested, I can mod for the fall of Rome earlier period.

Max, I had no idea this thread existed. Sorry for taking all of your time with those long emails. There isnt much info on the Kingdom of Soisson. I do know it was ruled from 466-486 by Dux Syagrius (he stole my name). I tried to represent his lands in my mod of your mod and there is no way to make it match with what is on any map I saw. He was defeated by Clovis and was murdered in 487 by the Visigoths. He was the last Magister Militum per Gaullia. Rumor has it he wrote a letter and promised to save the Romano-Brits during the early barbarian invasions of the island and some historians said he was the basis for the Aurthurian legends. I'm assuming he ruled over a gallo roman aristocracy and used the same troops (foederati, buccelari etc etc) as anyone else in that era.

PS I'm really pissed that I wasted 2 weeks of my life trying to change your mod to suit my needs. Then you come up with this 3.0 jazz and now I am totally dissatisfied with my product.........

He was the last Magister Militum in Gaul and when he saw that no help would come from Rome to the province he decided to take the title of Rex Romanun (or something like that) that meant King of the Romans.
I believe we can say that he was the last prescence of the Roman Empire in the West along with another General (one who commanded Julius Nepos forces) that fought a battle in Croatia against Odoacer in 486.
I believe that the Kingdom of Soissons lasted till 484 when Clovis (the second or the first?) conquered his land.
And I know that Soissons was the land that in the game is shown as normandy and flanders.

.

The information I have differs a little to this. In his chronicles, Gildas(contemporary to the period) says that a letter was sent from agitus, who is assumed to be the last effective Roman magister miltitum of gaul that modern history knows as Aegidius the father of Syagrius. You may be interested to know of the existence of a fictional work on Syagrius called "the king of the Romans " by John Gorman which is available from palm digital as an E book

may be of help but very little real info seems to be available, Aegidius is often connected with the Arthurian legend and is sometimes said to be arthur but who knows.

You're right. Aegidus was the last Magister Militum per Gaullia. I guess I was typing a little too fast......... I am not totally sure where I read that Syagrius was tied to the Arthurian legend. I want to say Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire by Gibbon, but there is a little too much info and a little too much old style english prose is that book to be 100% certain. I just remember the feeling I got when I read that passage: "Boy, those Brits sure are getting ripped off. Syagrius as King Arthur? Fat chance he's coming to help, he's got his hands full as it is!" There is such a relatice scarcity of info during this period and alot of it was biased or very exagerrated. It was kind of like the 70's. People werent sure what decade they were in!

Thanks for the adjustment

Hiya Max, long time no see! :p
Great news about the release date, hopefully something even bigger and better can be done for ROME TW?!
Guess it's a bit late to start monaing about stuff for FOR3? Just gonna say that the Bosporan kingdom fell to the Goths around 300 AD, so it shouldn't really be in the later campaigns...although I reckon the Slavs should be there.
Also, the AngloSaxon and Romano-Britons should have different start pos. The Danes did not leave Sweden until well into the fourth century after the AngloSaxons and Jutes left Jutland-Denmark.... I think that the next version/Rome Total war should have new provinces like Cernow in south west Britain as a Romano-British province.
I've started work on the portraits again (!- don't laugh...) and made the look and feel of the factions a lot better I think, the problems of black portraits and CTDs is still there though...
Anyways, good luck, can't wait till FOR3 is released!

Belisarivs.

no problem for me, take your time, i think that your studies are more important than MTW mods.

anyway to pack back the new graphics you can use "readbif" (there is an import function under the file menu - "import frame from bmp"), i've tried 2 days ago to pack back some of the frame you sent me, but after the importation in readbif, the background of the horse was black ! maybe there is something wrong in the transparent color of the color palette .
Also the horse colour palette is wrong, infact the horse is very dark and the has other altered colours.
maybe this fact is due to several graphic format changes ?

Thanks.
I used this procedure:
Extracted frames from light horse (for horse archers etc.) and that with mail armour (for Kataphraktoi etc.).
Then i set one frame of light horse as background and appropriate frame of that mailed horse as Layer 1.
Then moved parts of Layer 1 to correct positions according Background and carefully erased redundant parts of Layer 1.
Merged them together and saved as bmp in 8-bit.
So, you can see, that I didn't darken anything as well as didn't do anything with background.

I thing, that problem is, that while compression to 8-bit colours chooses any 256 colours, just to reduce size at max, readbif has still the same 256 colours and when it doesn't find any exactly correstponding ones, it tries to find closest ones, but it appears, that it doesn't mean, that it will succeed.
I've already tried readbif, but it produced something what cannot be taken seriously. Perhaps I had bad version. If you wish you can send it to me.

BTW, what do you think about that NSIS. It can create nice installer (and uninstaller as well) and still reduce size of finall file. I've managed to pack your mod from 24 - 26 MB to 14,5 MB with it. If you wish, I can send you my addon as example. It needs MedMod 3.14 to be installed first and adds bohemian faction to MTW. Just ot show how it works.

:knight:

maximus decimus meridius
09-29-2004, 16:51
Oh. i see i use same technique to make my unitgraphics. for example i create a new shield on the first frame with readbif, extract all the 12 frames in .bmp format and open them with Microsoft Office Photoeditor (very easy to use, it maintains the colour palette and also makes the resizing from 512 to 256 px), then i copy and paste the shield on the remnants 11 frames, save all the files, and reimport them in readbif.

no problems with color palette...

so if i have understand well you are using the light horse frames as background to paste part of the armored horse .... probably you are right the problem is the 8 bit conversion so i think that you should maintain the original output compress ratio of readbif.
i'll send you the readbif i'm using.

about the self installer for me it's ok but i have only to speak with Duke John to resolve the limit 2 Mb of uploading on the download section ..

oh yes please send me your mod ...

i had a radeon 9000 and i havent had any problem, some weeks ago i upgraded my pc witha radeon 9600 with new drivers.....

it always freezed my pc ...

so i put my old radeon 9000 in the pc with new drivers downloaded from ati site.... it freezed the pc..

i have uninstalled the new driver and installed the old ones (old catalyst 3.2 or 3.3 i don't remember well) and now IT WORKS VERY WELL !!!

How do you do this? I've found pretty simple technique. Convert sound to ogg (as it offers better compression with the same quality in comparison with mp3) with http://winvorbis.stationplaylist.com/WinVorbisSetup.exe or http://www.vorbis.com/files/1.0/windows/oggdropXPd.zip , download oggdec at http://www.rarewares.org/files/ogg/oggdec1.0.1.zip make batch file and anyone can decompress all files by simple doubleclick.

Hello Belisarivs ,,
The HTW music pack came with tools to convert the files to wav and all i had to do was remove viking files and replace .
I will get the one's you suggest as it looks like you have used them succesfully .
Do you have any music that would suit the Mod ?
I was thinking music from some of the late 50's 60's Hollywood Movie's , like QuoVadis , Spartacus , Cleopatra etc etc .

I think something really 'folky' and ancient sounding would suit the game more than classical music that we're so used to.
I think the Medieval Baebes do some really good rousing stuff that can be atmospheric too. Some songs are actually in LATIN and date from Roman times. Others are in Old Englsih and would suit the Germanic factions, I have a lot of Scandinavian folk music that would suit those factions. Mongolian throat-chanting would suit the nomadic factions. All of this real original authentic music is what influenced Activision's Total War music anyway....
Of course I have a lot of these in my PC if you wanna download 'em and try 'em out.... :charge:

Ok, it's been hard work but I have now completed the music pack for Fall of Rome. It includes all new music, from the frontend to the strat map and even in game play. Arabs and Persians unfortunately have the same music as the Steppe factions but this seems to suit them too, anyway the Steppe faction music is awesome!

I have no way of uploading the music pack onto the net however, all the files are quite large. If anyone is interested in putting up on their own site or even downloading directly from me, (I have a 10mbit connection so it's quick) you can contact me on through MSN messenger on rossalexdowning@hotmail.com

I believe the Hellenic Total War mod team included a separate .zip file with their music but it was in smaller size files. maybe mp3, but they included a music convertor (dBpowerAMP Music Converter Release 10) and you have to convert those files to .wav so you could enjoy it.
What do you think?

Okay thanks to you Empodecles for your tip about the HTW music pack!

I' ve worked on the same principle and managed to get all the tracks onto the the ORG downloads section, it should be ready to download as soon as the Fall of Rome 3 mod files are up, I think there will be a link here in this thread to the files.

This is the music pack for FALL OF ROME version 3.
This includes ALL NEW MUSIC, leaving NO ORIGINAL MTW or VI music, it's great! :P It really adds atmosphere....
It includes samples of ancient germanic languages and latin, plus historically accurate Christian Roman, Pagan Germanic folk music and epic poetry taken from that era in their original languages. It also includes music from the Bulgar tribes and all the peoples across the Steppe to Mongolia. So there is a lot of authentic stuff there!
It took me a while to get it all to sound balanced. I think its worked out really well.

It might be possible to grab a download in advance before it moves onto the proper site, http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Mtw_Uploads/MTWupload/
anything dated october 29th 2004.....

one more thing -I'm fixing the last few problems with the portraits now, so there should be an all new portraits pack coming soon too! I'll let write here when its ready....

Hi guys.
If you are interested in soundpacks have a look at my post page earlier. Might be interesting. I would suggest it, because those files are very large to download until you want to have 200 MB mod. Personally, it isn't my problem as I can run at MB/s, but someone can have serious problems with downloading such large mod. Loosy compression (especially OGG, as described in my previous post) offers lot smaller size and reasonable qaulity.

Max,
sorry but I have merely time for school. When I had to start over my HDD started behave abnormally. Now it is OK, but when I have to use oridinal palete, it will be lot harder because I can't use lot of Photoshop functions.

I know, I promised it, but I can't for now, sorry. I'll modiffy that loading screen and send it to you next week. Bye. :embarassed:

No offense taken, well.... I was trying to get as close to the period as possible which is why I have only chosen music from that era or poetry/folk songs that are said to date from those times. That's why I felt secure I was making a good music pack that reflected the true spirit of those times and cultures rather than just what I wanted to hear. I think it might surprise a few people as what we assume and think of as Roman music or Germanic music is completely different from the reality. But it is the historical reality I was trying to reflect. Can't please everyone. The music pack is not part of Maximus's mod -it's optional. So don't like it- don't use it!
Thanks for the comments anyway.

PS It's important that the right factions get the right music too....It's important that you follow the instructions in the readme file. This should be posted into each start pos campaign file:

Ok Max ,, I unzipped it all with no problems and I like what i see so far , nice descriptions for the periods and for the factions .
I began by playing some custom battles and noticed one huge graphical problem ... The GEPID LANCERS flash , they are half invisible and move as if walking when standing still , in battle they seem half the graphics are in the ground .
Also the AVAR HEAVY CAVALRY do the same thing when i had a custom battle in the Justinian period .
Im hoping nobody else has this glitch and its just my download , so perhaps just the code for these so far as an overwrite will solve my problem .
cheers .....THIS IS A GREAT MOD .... ~

Maximus, I've downloaded the mod and I believe it's great! I 've played few turns in the 470Ad campaing (expert) and I can't be happier. Althoug I see that after the turns end no description of buildings constructed appears!! Is it correct or have I download something wrong?
Also the emperor of the west have a really barbarian name! (and an ugly barbarian face) Was this your intention?
I see that you have make crusades avaiable to barbarians as invasions! Great work! those lombards are attacking milan but I managed to hold them back.
Another question: is it correct that in rome you can only build priest and diplomats? because I believe you should build some auxilia troops or at least mercs!! (which they never appear in the Milan Inn)

hope not to be bothering!! THANKS!

Empedocles.
About the descriptions of the buildings... they should appear at the end of the turn, i'll do some tests on my pc.... and yes the name of the West roman emperor should be Odovacar , the king of Heruli who removed Romolus Augustus the last emperor and that became the real ruler of the Western Roman empire after the 476AD.

Beside i've made most of the roman units buildable only in specific provinces, for instance Auxilia (Gallic and German troops) are buildable only in gaul, north africa, britain, spain and balkans; italy in that period wasn't a good recruitment area.

All.
I think to have understood the problem with the half armoured horse of the gepid lancers and the avar cavalry, i'll do a test this evening and i'll upload a patch in the next days.

happy to see that you like the mod

Hello Maximus,

I have been slowly downloading the individual "Fall of Rome" zips you posted on the 8th at this (http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Mtw_Uploads/MTWupload/) site.

So far, I've grabbed 15 of the 24 (or so) zips you posted.

Today I went online to download the rest of them, and it looks like you replaced them all with one big beefy 28M download.

This isn't a huge problem for me (I can just download it overnight), but are the smaller zips downloadable from another site?

Also, is there an installer in the new download or do we have to follow the same procedure?

Anyway, thanks for the hard work, and I'm looking forward to your mod!

Thanks for all the great work.

I think many of the problems are coming from people who are unzipping files into wrong folders, etc, etc. . .

It woud be very helpful if someone could place all the files of this Mod into an exe file that could automatically unzip all files into the appropriate game folders.

This would help solve many of the issues people seem to be having.

Just a suggestion.

Max,
I've tried Twilight of the Empire and it was really cool. My West Roman Empire (at expert difficulty, there isn't any other difficulty I can recommend) was attacked by Germans, Franks and Suebs at first turn and they launched their invasions as well. After few defeats half of my empire rebelled (but I didn't packet with rebels), I lost entire Spain, North Africa (except Tunisia) and I had to create chain of my ships to be able to send reinforcements from north africa to Europe. My Emperor Odovacrius (I've never heard this name, who was it his name sounds german like Odoacer) had influence only two crowns (in description was written, that my voice is only seldom heard), but with his four stars he was best commander of my armies, I fought back, destroyed main forces of Germans (but their raid towards Rome was successful, though it wasn't such loss, because I couldn't train any army there and it was meanwhile Rebellious), then almost all rebellious provinces returned to my hands (in one turn, they just turned from rebellious to West Roman), with new buildings and soldiers (but this was during reign of his son Valentinianus II), who immediately gained influence 9 crowns (in description was written, that if someone doesn't listen your voice, risks many), then I defeated main forces of Franks, Vandals (whose raid captured Orleans) and Suebs. Franks and Germans were utterly destroyed in same year and now it becomes quite boring, because I'm richest, strongest, most advanced and not just eager to fight with Byzantium (not because I'm afraid, I just like Byzantines and even when it's game I try to avoid their destruction by my armies.

It's great mod and I have some questions.
I have problems with loyalty of my generals and provinces. I have to hold quite large (400 - 500 men) armies almost everywhere. I haven't encountered it in MTW before, I've heard about disloyalty when you conquered very large area, but I've only reconquered West portion of Roman Empire (and only slightly more - to Bohemia), defeats are unknown to my army (if I don't count first 10 turns) my Imperator was Trader and Magnificent Builder (he died and was replaced by his son). And I still continue in course of rebuilding of the Empire.

Another question is about portraits. I know that Rome was influenced by barbarians, but why they use portraits from vikings as well as east Romans?

I want to ask about campaign dating to 470. Why West Romans don't have Legions? AFAIK East Roman infantry was trained in same style as West Roman (they used same formations) and IMHO, West Roman would continue to train Legions, but these wouldn't be so numerous as Cavalry units.

I think that this is incorrection of your mod, that West Romans almost cannot train cavalry, but AFAIK late Roman army was from 1/2 cavalry, at least.
But Late Roman Legions were shadow of their former glory. Lorica segmentata was abandoned, Gladius was replaced by Spatha (IMHO because soldiers conscripted from barbarians changed Roman fighting style from disciplined fight of formation as one man, where short sword offered advantage in pressure of battle, to that barbaric style of undisciplined horde where Spatha offered longer range for this) Scutum was replaced by oval shield (reflecting fact that Turtle formation wasn't needed because AFAIK only Huns used archers in greater numbers) and one heavy pilla were replaced by more and smaller spears (reflecting fact that numbers of enemies increased while quality of their equipment decreased).

At the end I want to say that your mod is really cool. BTW I've altered that Loading Screen, but I forgot it at home so effect is the same as if I didn't do anything. I'll try to send it next weak.
Bye :knight:

Max, it's the best mod for MTW I've played!
In my case I played the 470 ad campaing in expert and found it difficult to hold my empire. In my first try I was crushed by many barbarians invasions (so good!!!) that destroyed my empire and civil war ended my life!

Next I gave it another try and have managed so far to hold the territories and conquered tyrolia (I use MTW names)
Suggestions for players in 470 campaing:

Build as many buildings as you can so your emperor gets the +X loyalty for all generals!
Build Inns (speccialy in Provence) because you will need mercernaries!
In Milan build a horse breed and spearmaker workshoop so you can train cavalry, and try to hold Austria because you have nice infantry there! (if neccesary abandon croatia)

Ok, thanks!

Hi, great mod you guys have made. Just a couple of things though:

1) Persia is not a Muslim faction. IIRC the Persians were actually Zoroastrians until the huge Muslim Barbarian invasion wiped out the riligion. Perhaps you could consider changing them to a Pagan faction or may be Aryan, afterall the Persians were the first ever Aryans. ~;)

2) I'm currently having a blast with the Romano-British but I've been getting Barbarian invasions up the wahzooo. After finally driving the Saxons out of Britain, two factions (I think it was the Franks and the Vandals) suddenly start barbarian invasions against me! Is this normal? Or may be it's because I'm use to playing as a Catholic faction in regular MTW - VI. ~

All.

About the portraits, i've found them in the game. so it's for this reason i've utilized, it has been a quick way to solve a problem. sorry..

About the disloyal generals, well in that period political and military revolts were a really frequent affair, generals and dux rvolted against the last emperors a thing that at the end came to the disaster.
so i've tried to remake this situation in my mod....

About the 470AD, it was at this time that there were the major military changes in the Roman army, Infantry lost its importance and cavalry became the most important part of the army.
This change occurred, probably, durng the reign of Anastasius II. Justinian only made use of this new type of army...

thanks for the boot screen, i'll put in the next release ....

I'll do some changes in faction colours in the next release; about the strategic map, i haven't planned to change the country names, if someone wants to do it i'll be very happy.

Great work Max! it was well worth the wait! ~

I ran into a bug while playing the 470 AD campaign as the West Romans. The game would randomly lock up between turns, when it cycles thru the portraits. After doing some research via -ian, it seems it was caused by the Anglo-Saxons launching a crusade against Constantinople. The Crusade message appeared, asking for a 750 Solidii bribe for the Pope's approval, once I clicked OK it promptly froze. It's probably caused by the Papacy not being a proper faction.

Has anyone else run into this?

Max,
I am playing the Justinian campaign right now, you gotta love Belisarius :charge:

I have conquered the Vandal kingdom, but went bankrupt. I have finally turned my economy around, but the Ostrogoths are so powerful now. I am going to send Belisarius up thru Sicily, and Narses thru Histria.

I have a suggestion for the next release. I have changed the Barques into Boats and Caravels into Longboat2's, for the barbarian factions. I also gave the Ostrogoths, Vandals and Visigoths Galleys (Cogs) and Wargalleys (Curracks), buildable only on the Mediterranean coast of Africa, Spain, and Italy.

I made the Barbarian galleys a little more expensive. 700 & 1000 i believe, and a little more expensive to maintain.

I am also going to hijack the other ship slots for the rest of the Viking ships for the Danes.

This is definitely still my favorite mod.

Try to convert it to tga. Find loadscreen.tga (or something this way) and replace it with my loadscreen. I've tried it with one I sent to BKB and it worked.

I don't think that you made mistake. That bif file really exists. But it seems to be working when this tga is replaced.

Fine.
As I said million times before (I hope that this didn't start to be annoying): download NSIS http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/nsis/nsis202.exe?download then install it, make zip file with correct folder structure, go to Bin folder (in folder where you installed NSIS) run zip2exe.exe, open that zip file with it, set some settings (setting lzma compression is suggested), click generate, wait for while.......

Maximus! I just wanted to compliment you on your mod. You did a great job. I've been playing "Fall of Rome" for the last week or so, and I've enjoyed it thoroughly. My favorite campaign so far has been playing the Western Romans in the "Twilight of the West" campaign.

I have particularly liked the Barbarian Invasion/Crusades. A huge stack of barbarians determinedly driving towards your richest provinces gets your attention in a hurry.

I was curious though about the stats for the various units. If you happen to have a list of the unit types and their stats, I'd love to take a look at it.

Thanks!

^Indeed. I have found that the path to victory lies in linking with the other Romans and bulking up your armies with whatever you can muster from the Empire. Mercenaries work wonders.

It's hard, but aside from the Goths, I'm doing alright. I suppose my campaigns in Byzantium five hundred years later were just preperation for the Twilight.

Thanks for your appreciation! Sorry but i haven't a list with the stats done with a spreadsheet o word.
but you can see the unit stats in the Crusader_unit_prod.txt file .....

Hi. I found some mistakes in mod. It's in names of provinces. This picture describes more: http://www.initaly.com/pix/itmap1.jpg

I know. But Campania should be renamed to Latium (Campania is around Naples), Liguria to Lombardia, Liguria is in coast (I don't know name of this province in your mod but originally it is probably Genoa).

Have a look at that link to picture in my previous post.

Sorry , I think within 15 days cause i'm involved in Middle Earth total War Mod.

anyway the patch will have the Aurelian campaign (270ad), a revisited 306ad campaign with a new roman faction and a 610ad campaign named "Heraclius the first Crusader".
