Belisarius created an executable version, but it's no longer available (as you know).
Deleted? Hm, where should I upload it, then. Is anyone interested?
Edit:
Nevermind. I'll upload it. I didn't read whole thread before.

Thanks man! :2thumbsup: After you upload it and post a link, I'll see if we can get permanent hosting for it here on the Org.
This is an excellent mod! Better than BI I believe. I just love how you represented the Romans in here. My first campaign was actually in the first era, with the red Romans and my first battle was a defence against the Visigoths. I was outnumbered 4-1 with only 3 units of legio comitatensis and a unit of sagitarii. It was a good thing though that I was able to position my army on the slope of a hill while the enemy had to walk a fair distance to get to me. Even though my units were literally surrounded and I had to commit my archers to a melee, I still routed and crushed most of the enemy army. Did you give Roman units a valour boost? Because it seemed that way as I don't know how they were able to withstand that onslaught and not rout...
yes this is a good mod mate.
but is there still going to be a update for this mod becose i thought it wos?

The mod creator, Maximus decimus meridius, last posted here in early June, at which time he mentioned working on an FoR project for RTW BI. Sadly it does not appear that he's still working on FoR 3.1.
Max - If you have stopped work and don't plan to resume, would you consider bundling up all the in-process FoR 3.1 files and posting them as a download? That way if somebody else decides to go forward with the project, they have the benefit of all the work you've already done.

I'd like to convince some of you to join me in development of mod for game 0AD (http://wildfiregames.com/0ad/). Name of mod is For Honour and Glory (http://www.wildfiregames.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=10288).
I am looking especially for those skilled in painting in 2d editor (GIMP, Photoshop ....).
Would you join me?
EDIT1: Damn it. rapidshare.de reports having all drives currently full. Do you have any other suggestions where to upload it?

Hi,
Quick question. The only really annoying bug that I've discovered is that the Saiones Royal Cavalrymen (and others that use the same bif) don't animate correctly on the battlefield. Part of the rider, and maybe the top of the horse are all that appears.
1) Has anyone else noticed this?
2) Is there a quick work-around solution for this problem?
I have the same problem with the Saiones Royal Cavalrymen. I thought I had a corrupt installation so I re-installed. Unfortunately the animation problem is still there. Does anyone know of a solution? :help:

Not directly, no - unfortunately I'm not a grafix guy. However, it wouldn't hurt to post this question (including a good description of the problem) in the thread of an MTW Mod which is still being actively supported (BKB Super Mod, for example). Perhaps one of those guys can suggest a fix which could be made available as a separate download. Since this mod is not actively supported, the options are limited.
Alright! The Org has graciously offered to host both the FoR 3.0 executable install and the FoR 3.0 Map. Here are the links to each:

Many thanks to Epistolary Richard for helping us out with this!

Are the techtrees for Fall of Rome availiable somewhere, please? I've just started playing it, not doing too badly but I don't know what I need to build to get the more advanced units.

Hi, I've just downloaded this mod, which looks great! But i have had problems with CTD's. When i click on some units, units i get either a CTD or a freeze with the message Non-existent generic name, image filename = Infopic_Filename, Culture catholic, or something very similar. Is this common or has something installed wrongly. It took ages to install the individual files.
I may try re-installing using the self-installer posted above. If so, where to put it? Directly into the mtw folder i suppose?
I really want to play this mod. It's like 4 (or is it 5) different mods in one!
BTW does the modded map change the province names from medieval names to the roman ones?

If they exist, I haven't seen them. If this is something you would be willing to create, I can make sure it get's posted and we can credit you with the work.

The individual zipped file install process is awful - I screwed it up several times myself. And yes, the errors you describe are almost guaranteed to be coming from a bad install.

By all mean, please reinstall the mod using the executable. It's a no-brainer. And yes, directly into the MTW folder is correct. I would advise getting a clean, patched MTW install, and then copying the entire directory. Then install FoR into the copy. I find this to be the best way to have multiple MTW mods running on my machine. Plus, if you ever screw anything up, you still have the clean MTW install available in order to make another copy.
I really want to play this mod. It's like 4 (or is it 5) different mods in one!
Exactly. Great fun. Plus playing as different factions within each setup is the equivalent of even more game play options.
BTW does the modded map change the province names from medieval names to the roman ones?
Yes! It REALLY improves the immersion.

Everything up and running now. Now i realise why a tech tree is important. Started a campaign as the East Romans in 470 last night on hard, thinking. Oh, i'll take a few moves to see what i can build. No rush, then wham turn 1 i was attacked by the Arabs and the Persians, and was informed that an angry horde of Ostrogoths were coming my way. Help.. i'm being oppressed. MTW the Byz were quite relaxed (too easy on most settings in early really) this is a different ball game completely.
In the absence of tech trees or unit lists has anyone any advice on which faction to start with? Don't even begin to mention the Bosphorans, they have a life expectancy of two moves. Any advice thanks

Just curious whether someone would be interested if I made self-installer containing changed map.

Sure! We'd be interested in a changed map.
While you're at it, could you update that Saiones cavalryman bif that doesn't work right? Just replacing it with one of the ones that does work right would be fine. It's hard to enjoy battles in the late period when the animation for several of the cavalry unit types doesn't work right.

Good idea. We can change the version number (3.0a), you can add a short "changes from 3.0" text file to explain it, and I'll get the Org to host the new version. :2thumbsup:

Could you identify the "bad bifs" and also identify (by testing) the replacement BIF files that will solve the problem? That will allow Belisarius to delete the bad ones and replace them with the good. If you would be willing to do this, it should definitely be added to the new 3.0a, and you will get credit for this in the "changes from 3.0" readme.

Good news! There is an easy fix for the screwed-up heavy cavalry animations.
The culprit is the ArmHorse bif. I simply modified the CRUSADERS_UNIT_PROD11 file so that every unit that uses ArmHorse now uses KHorse instead. All the units that were effected work fine with KHorse.
I've already made (and tested) the changes in my version of the file. If you'd like, I can e-mail a copy of the revised file to you or Belisarius for future use.
If anyone would like to make the changes to their own files right away, it's fairly easy to do. I used a program called GnomeEditor to view the CRUSADERS_UNIT_PROD11 file. If you'd like, you can just open the file in Word, but it's a bit messy. GnomeEditor will arrange the information for you nicely in rows and columns. If you use GnomeEditor, scroll across to column 48, then scroll down and replace every ArmHorse with KHorse. If you make the modifications in Word, you'll simply have to scroll through the text file looking for ArmHorse. Remember to save your work.
You can download GnomeEditor from here (http://www.3ddownloads.com/strategy-gaming/totalwar/Tools)
While you're at the above link, you might also want to download a little program called "readbif". It allows you to open and view the bif files used in the game.
The units that need the fix are:
Byzantine Cavalry
Gepid Lancers
Milites Equites
Gothic Knights
Avar Nobles
If you decide that the KHorse graphic doesn't look "right" to you, the following Horse animations/bifs are available for you to choose from:
ArmHorse (Broken. The original game's Late-era knight's horse)
EHorse (A horse in scale armor... a Kataphraktoi's horse)
KHorse (A High-era knight's horse with white cloth horse covering)
LiHorse (An unarmored horse)
Camel (A fricking camel)
It's too bad that there isn't a bif available with a frontally-armored horse. That would be most accurate for this era.
Anyway, that's all there is to it. Enjoy! :beam:

Yes, it is. MTW is still my favorite game, primarily due to all the great mods that people have put together over the last couple of years.
By the way, the file is in your inbox and ready to go.

OK Guys, here's Aurelian's long-awaited fix to the "bad-bif-bug" that's afflicted FoR for sooooo long! It's available from a free download service (Axifile), since ultimately we expect that Belisarivs can incorporate this bug fix and the revised map into a new FoR 3.0a build. Once that's been done, I'll petition the Org to provide permanent hosting.
Download the file here (http://www.axifile.com?3834865)
To install the fix:
1) Unzip the file to create a text file called CRUSADERS_UNIT_PROD11.txt
2) Drop the text file into the main FoR 3.0 directory (where it will overwrite the file that's already there.)
3) Done!

Hmmm....
I've run into a bit of a snag with the new map.
I placed the new map into the correct folder BUT the new province names don't appear when I start a new game of FoR.
What is even stranger is, even though I have placed the OLD map in another location (so I can use the NEW one), the old province names continue to appear in-game as always...
So... does anyone know what might be wrong?
Has anyone else encountered this problem?

My installation of Fall of Rome has started crashing to desktop in 318AD. It does this after I'm attacked by 3 Barbarian invasions. I fight the first myself, the second retreats but from the 600-odd men it invaded with it now has 2500 or so when it retreats. Trying to quicksave before the next battle gives a ctd. If I auto-resolve the first battle the second Barbarian invasion retreats still with 600 men, and I can fight the final invasion, but then it ctd's as soon as this battle is finished. I tried going back a year, but this also crashed to desktop. Has anyone else had this problem, if so any ideas how I could fix it please? I've tried renaming ArmHorse to KHorse and reinstalled the mod but without success.
Apologies if this's the wrong place for it, would it be better to post this in the "Why does my Mod crash?" thread? Would a copy of error.txt help?

Was installation done correctly?
You must have MTV: VI installed, patched and then install mod from installer. It is at link in my previous post (it is updated and new map with correct names of provinces was added.
Hi Belisarivs
is your Fall of Rome version 3.0a updated with new map names and also patched with CRUSADERS_UNIT_PROD11.txt file.????
i still got the old version the 3.0 FoR and a zipfile with map names.
Is yours complete now???

WestCountryWarrior, that sounds like a corrupt save game. Only way is to delete the current save file, start an new game and in future back-up all your saves in a seperate location.

Fall of Rome was installed on a Viking Invasion version 2.01, is that what it should be? I had played a few games of Medieval TW before installing the mod, would this matter? The mod was from the .exe installer, I had tried unzipping on a different copy of VI previously but made a mistake. The map was installed too.
Rythmic, do you mean the save game is corrupted or the whole Fall-of-Rome installation? Would it be better to reinstall the mod in case the whole set-up is corrupted, as some of the earlier saves are also corrupt? I'll backup the saves in future.
Just the save game. Corrupted save games happen infrequently in MTW regardless of what mod/version you are using.

I posted the information below elsewhere, but thought it also belonged here too.
Since the AI is a dolt when it comes to using siege engines, and since it always uses them in the wrong way (how many battles have you fought where it brings siege engines that do little to nothing), here is an easy way to remove them from the FoR Mod:
I did a little experimentation and found that you can easily remove all siege engines and siege buildings from the game, especially from ancient mods that are pre-gunpowder.
I am currently playing the Fall of Rome mod. And here is an easy way to remove ALL siege engines from this mod. Use this method if you never want to see ANY siege engines or buildings appear in your game. In addition, removing them does NOT affect the tech tree at all.
Back up your files FIRST.
Grab the Gnome Editor and load the Crusader_Build_prod13.txt file that belongs to the FoR Mod.
Number 7 "Siege Engines" is what we want to eliminate.
Now zip over to column 27.
On line 8 (for Gunsmith) you will see the word "GUNPOWDER".
COPY the line "GUNPOWDER, GUNPOWDER, GUNPOWDER, GUNPOWDER" found in the line for "Gunsmith" and PASTE it in the empty line just above it (for Siege Engines).
Now save it and exit.
That's it!
ALL Siege Engines and buildings have been removed form the game. Placing "Gunpowder" in column 27 for siege engines will make siege engines unavailable until gunpowder is researched. And since gunpowder units aren't available in the Rome Mod, then they have been eliminated completely.
Further:
I have been playing for the past few days as the West Romans, and after implementing the above changes, I can say that I have not seen a siege engine anywhere in sight - heheh. Now the AI fields a proper army with fighting men....

Hey, that's a great fix. Nice and simple.
Good one, Pericles.
Thanks :2thumbsup:
This is a great mod.
With the removal of siege engines and buildings the AI has fielded nothing but good units. In addition, the AI doesn't spend time and money building siege buildings for units it is incompetent to use.
Instead, it builds buildings and units that have fighting ability. In battle after battle, I have faced AI armies where not a single siege engine appeared
And.... siege engines will not appear in rebel armies either.
Playing as the West Romans, I have been under attack non-stop since I started to play them. You do not need caffeine to play this mod - heheh
I have had some truly great battles.
In one battle, I faced the East Romans. We were about equal in men. We both fought to exhaustion, eventually having only one legion each - both had high valor. They attacked each other and fought like lions, going from 100 men each, down to just 10 men! Eventually, my legion broke and ran having only 3 men left... What a fight... I found myself cheering my guys on...
What this mod needs are pictures for the Roman factions, to represent the Roman leaders. This would just about complete this great mod. Is there a way to add pictures?
Cheers!
Pericles
01-13-2007, 21:02
I found out how to add pictures. Very easy.
We would only need pics for the General, Kings and Princes folders for the Catholic faction (which represents all three Roman factions in FoR).
I am wondering if anyone has the RTW game. I am sure that it would have all the portraits we would need. Could someone who has the game check on the portraits and see what size they are? In FoR (MTW) the portraits are 96x142.
Cheers!

Many thanks Belisarivs
That is a good idea about those ships. The AI has been playing much better without those siege engines it drags around with it.
I have actually tweaked alot of things in this game, in both the "units" and "building" txts which basically amounts to a new patch for the game. The changes I have made amounts to altering build times for buildings and changes in costs. In a game such as FoR it makes little sense to me for buildings to take 16 years to build, yet can be destroyed in a single turn. Especially, since in FoR, it is TOTAL WAR from the very start. 16 years in this game is an eternity. So far, these changes have worked out nicely.
Pictures
Finding pics have not been the problem.
Here is one alternative. For Emperors and Princes these might work nicely. They are busts and statues of Roman Emperors and Generals:
http://www.livius.org/ei-er/emperors/emperors01.html
http://www.roman-empire.net/diverse/pictures.html
However, I tried adding a few pics but the game would NOT accept them. Obviously, there is something I am missing. The pics in-game are 32bit, while the highest I get mine is 24bit. Also, the pics of leaders must also show up in that little row of leaders that appears at the start of a turn. How is this done??
Either someone can change these pics properly OR get the pics form the RTW game and just add them in.
It seems to me that it would not take much to truly polish and finish this mod:
* Add new game tweaks to buildings and units - which I have already done.
* Add new pictures for Kings, Princes, and Generals - this still needs to be done. The creator of this mod has generated in-game portraits by using the Kings, Princes, and Generals folders located here: C:\Program Files\Total War\Medieval - Total War\campmap\Portraits\Vikings\Catholic.
NEW pictures of Roman-era people would truly add to the immersion factor.
I will hold off a bit from sending anything to you in the build and unit txts until I have played the game some more. I am still tweaking things a bit.
I hope someone can take up the mantle and help change those pics in-game. It would not take too much effort. The pics only need to be changed in three folders. Duplicate pics can also be used.
Cheers!
Pericles

A bit more on the picture situation.
We need pictures of the following:
* 50 Roman Emperor pics
* 50 Prince pics
* 60 Roman General pics
They need to be: 96x142 in size at 32 bit in TGA.
Many, if not most of these pics can also be found in the "Show Avatars" link located at the top of this forum. They are listed as RTW_Generals.
What is needed is someone with a proper paint/picture program who can do these pics up properly.
Cheers!

I hope that my new PC will arrive in friday. It will be able to run RTW well, so I'll install it and extract those portraits for Romans.
Should this be done as additional installer or make new, complete installer 3.0b with modded CRUSADERS_UNIT_PROD11.txt and those portraits? It must be annoying do download whole mod again and again but it will save time and confusion with installation.

Excellent Belisarivs!
Doing this should amount to very little work. If the portraits in RTW are numbered the same as in MTW, then it's just a matter of extracting them and adding them to FoR.
This should add to the immersion factor big time.
BTW, if it's not too much extra trouble, maybe also add in the Emissaries and Admirals in addition to the King, Prince and General folders. These five portrait folders are used the most.
Should this be done as additional installer or make new, complete installer 3.0b with modded CRUSADERS_UNIT_PROD11.txt and those portraits? It must be annoying do download whole mod again and again but it will save time and confusion with installation.
I would say make a new, complete installer with a new version number with everything in it. This way everything will be in one package. Most people have broadband and there is GetRight for dial-ups.
With all that's going to be added, I would say that this will amount to a major patch.
This patch will add the following:
* All new portraits for maybe 5 folders - done by you.
* A new revised CRUSADERS_UNIT_PROD11.txt AND CRUSADERS_BUILD_PROD13.txt - done by me.
I am still playing and tweaking both of the above txt files. Basically, those txt files will include all bug fixes found to date; the removal of all siege engines and buildings from the game; as well as revised building times and prices for buildings, farms, and fort-type buildings.
As the West Romans I am being severely hard-pressed. I have been using every technique I know, but making very little head-way. I am being pressed by all sides. Very balanced mod, and great for those looking for a tough challenge.
These new additions should polish up this mod very nicely. :2thumbsup:

OK
Here's a quick update:
* A few posts ago I mentioned that I could not see the new map. This has been FIXED. Apparently, I have an older vid card so it could not read the new map. Soooo... I re-sized the NEW MAP (NEW MAPTEX2.tga) to become the same size as the other (original MAPTEX.tga) file that was in the same game directory. My vid card can now read this lower res map. Looks great :2thumbsup:
* I spent quite a bit of time going through all the buildings and units. I made far too many changes to list here. Suffice it to say:
- Most buildings have been reduced in cost (slightly) and build times (quite a bit)
- Historically, while the main legions were phased out in the Third Century AD of Rome's history, it did continue with the Auxilia and Pseudocomitatenses legions which were of lower quality and had foreign recruits. So these last two will be available in ALL periods.
- I have enabled Roman cavalry to appear in ALL PERIODS. Historically, Rome INCREASED its use of cavalry in the later years of Empire, since it needed a mobile defense to deal with barb invasions. I saw figures which stated that there was a single Roman cavalry unit for every three infantry in the later years.
- Some buildings have been given either a valour, discipline or morale bonus, such as the Barb Invasion (which gets 1 morale bonus). I have also reduced the cost and build times for the barb invasion. So be prepared - :skull:
What still needs to be done:
* Historically, in the HIGH and LATE periods Rome used horse archers. Many of you will be happy to hear this. So the basic horse archer unit should be enabled for the Italian, Roman, and Byzantine factions in HIGH, LATE.
* Ships - I tried to change this, but just changing it in the unit.txt is not enough. It seems some of the ships are tied to certain factions in some other file. I think most factions should be allowed to build most ships throughout all the eras. This would make it a bit fairer and provide the player with more challenge on the water. If someone knows how to do this, it would be appreciated.
* Agents - What agents should be kept?
That's about it - with Belisarivs kindly providing all the portraits we need, the new version of this mod should be finished pretty quickly.
If anyone else has any suggestions, please let us know.
Cheers!

Another update:
Horse archers have now been activated for all Roman factions in ALL Periods called the: Equites Clibonarii Sagittarii.
Since the time period for this mod runs from about 320ad to 800ad, I felt it seemed appropriate to have HA in all periods.
But it will take some time to build...:smash:
Wishful thinking:
I was having a look at the crusade marker being used for the Barb invasions. It would be kind of cool if the cross could be replaced with something like a barb figure, a large sword, or maybe an eagle...
Since it's a static image I wonder if it would be easy to change?
It would make for some nice eye candy...

Another update:
Great to see you in here, and bringing some life back to this old mod! Most of your changes seem quite sound, but I'm a tiny bit concerned about the siege engines - how is the human player or the AI supposed to resolve sieges? I agree that these things have no business on the battlefield, and if it improves the AI armies, that's a good thing. But if the only way to resolve a siege now is to "starve them out", that sounds a bit problematic.
Note to Axel: Elephants are from the Roman Republic period - this is the End of the Empire, which is 500 years later!

Thanks for your enthusiasm axel
There won't be any new units; however, most of the Roman factions already have the icons of Roman soldiers.
Sorry, there is no list, but if you load the Gnome editor with the units.txt, you can browse through the list.

I love HTW as well :)
The time period for the Three Punic Wars was from 264 BC to 146 BC.
The Fall of Rome Mod however has its 4-5 campaigns ranging from 304 AD to about 527 AD. So there won't be any elephants in it. Although, I agree it would be cool!
I'm glad you brought up Hannibal. I think it would be doable to make a Punic War campaign from this mod without too much trouble. The map and unts are already in this mod, so it would just take someone enterprising enough to do it.
BTW, a Hannibal movie called, Hannibal the Conqueror, is going to be released in 2008, and of course the movie 300 is coming on March 9, 2007. Good times :2thumbsup:

Thanks for your kind words, Kull.
Max, with the help of others, did a great job with this mod. Right now I'm basically trying to see it get finished and polished.
Regarding siege engines:
Whenever I played MTW, I NEVER bought or researched seige engines - never.
Why? Because all I ever needed to do was to rush the gate with some cheap units and break in
And, as we all know, the AI is totally incompetent when it comes to seige engines.
After playtesting for the past week, I have found the removal of seige engines and buildings not to be any problem whatsoever. Most castles fall within a year or two, so I don't mind waiting. If I want to storm the castle, I just remove my best units and most times I take castle on the first try even using autocal.
I have also seen the AI storm my castle when the odds are in its favour and win.
So far - no problemo - given the fact the AI no longer has to build seige buildings and be saddled with dragging those darn seige works around with them, it fields armies ONLY with fighting men, and rebelling armies have NO seige engines in them.
Believe me it is a win/win situation.
Cheers!

Thanks.
I'm having a blast playing it.
The several campaigns in it will sorely test a player's strategic and tactical abilities to the fullest.
As you know, this mod is set in the time period leading up to Rome's fall, so it is beset on all sides by raging barbarian hordes (sorry, if there are any raging barbarians in the audience) :whip:
I have had more excitement, more edge of my seat playing, and more intense battles in 30 turns of this mod, than in 150 turns in MTW. Things get tense from the first turn.
As the Roman player, you have three key strategies:
1) Do you hold all territory, or withdraw from some, and then build up troops on the frontier provinces?
2) Do you split your resources and build a fleet to protect your coastline from being invaded, and thus try to achieve a local naval superiority?
3) Do you try to build up some of your provinces economically (and thus forego military buildings), so that you will be able to sustain your military buildup? If so, then a fleet will be necessary to protect the coasts of these vulnerable provinces.
A player will have a lot of decisons to make.

Hi axel.
Funny thing, I just thought of where I could find a list of units in this mod. I had to go digging, but here it is. Some of the Roman units are in bold. Also, Crusade has been renamed to be Barbarian Invasion. As you know the Crusade Marker is being used to generate Barbarian Invasions.

Hi axel:
I'm not planning to make a Punic War campaign, although, like you, I would like to see one made. Maybe someone might want to start up a project on it. I would certainly be glad to help.
Belisarivs may be planning to make an all new installer for this mod since we will have a lot to add to it. I keep thinking of new things all the time - heh. I think you should be able to just over-write the old mod - the new files will just replace them.
Cheers!

I don't know about RTW or MTW II, since I don't have those games.
I agree that more things are better. However, the cool thing about the MTW engine is that the units do stay in phalanx-style formations, so when I line up my troops, I place these formations in a checker-box style similar to what was depicted in the movie Spartacus.
It's still pretty cool. I'm a big history buff, so all this gaming goodness is spoiling me rotten.

Update:
Work progresses.
The issue with the ships has been fixed. Some of you mentioned the fact that many of the ships were unbalanced as in attack/defense strength.
This has been fixed.
While all ships will have similar ratings in a/d as they climb the tech tree, what will set them apart will be the commanders, experience, movement and speed, as it was historically.
So while some ships may have better attack values, other ships will be faster and will be able to move a couple of sea zones. So the choice will be there depending on what you need.

Update:
I found out how to add portraits to the mod.
So, FoR will have all NEW portraits for Kings, Generals, Princes, Emissaries, Princesses, and Admirals.
This should add to the immersion factor.
I have decided to go with a classical style incorporating the classic sculptures, statues and busts of the Roman Emperors, Generals, etc.
They will all be in deep, rich 24 bit colour, to go along with the game.

It's a labour of love...
What would be ideal would be to have some parchment info_pictures showing Roman soldiers. We could use about 4 pics of Roman soldiers, and one of Roman cavalry. These could be added for all the Roman factions.

Hi guys.
Sorry for the delay. My PC arrived slightly later than I expected. I was also busy installing an so.
I used HDD prom previous PC set with installed OSs. In Linux all went well. It took ~5 minutes to make it fully work. But Windows didn't even boot up and had to be reinstalled. Shame that Total War games aren't written in OpenGL.
Have you any clue how to extract those portraits from RTW? I don't know its directory structure well and I couldn't find any portraits.
When you are ready, Pericles, send me those txt files, please.

Glad things finally worked out for you :beam:
Murpahy's Law always happens at the worst time
Regarding the portraits: They may be embedded inside a special file, and not open like they are in MTW. I was afraid of that. I left a message in the RTW forums regarding the RTW portraits, but I received ZERO replies back - heheh
I don't have photoshop, and zero skill when it comes to the bifs. I heard they are very tricky to work with, so I was hoping that someone with a little experience working with the bifs might help a bit.
It would be great to have a picture of a Roman legionaire soldier for the parchment info_pics.
Not to worry about the RTW pics too much. I have gathered up quite a few busts of Roman emperors that I will be able to use in-game, and they look pretty good. I have posted a few screenshots of them in the previous few posts.
Once I have everything done I will send you the files. Surprisingly they are quite small in size.
Just doing some playtesting and portrait work....
Cheers!

Here's a sample of a battle I fought yesterday.
Currently, I'm playing the fourth campaign (Last Stand) as the Romans. I love this campaign. You start with few provinces and you're up against the wall from the start...
Both the Lombards and the Visigoths invaded my province: I had 840 soldiers; they had 2,200. I had no archers or cavalry. But I wanted that province. It was one of the few troop producers to churn out badly needed soldiers...
So I was determined to make a stand. I positioned all my troops in the woods and then prepared for the onslaught.
After a few minutes I noticed that a mass of troops in the distance seemed to be running into each other. Then I received the message that the Lombards were fleeing the field. Apparently, the Visigoths had turned on the Lombards and defeated them in battle! :inquisitive:
Now I was facing about 1,400 enemy troops instead of 2200.
I was determined to hold this province and told my legions that we would fight and die where we stood: there was NO retreat.
So my men tightened their chin straps, unsheathed their swords, and braced themselves to meet the enemy with a grim determination...
In the distance we could hear the sound of the Visigoth war trumpets and the war cries of their charging warriors...
Before long both my Roman legions and the Visigoth barbarians were locked in a death struggle. Neither side asked for, nor gave, any quarter. The Visigoth infantry charged my disciplined legions with a wild fury, while their heavy cavalry charged our flanks...
The fighting grew in intensity and, having used all my reserves, I was forced to send in my commander with his bodyguard. The Visigoths had sent in troops to attack my left rear flank, and I was forced to send in my commander to stop them.
With all forces committed, and with all men fighting for their lives, all I could do was watch and wait...
The fighting grew vicious... and it seemed to last forever....
Finally, the Visigoth right flank broke and ran. This freed up some troops, and so I swept in on the Visigoth flank with, by now, two badly under-strength legions.
Eventually, the Visigoths broke and fled the field. I had won the day, but at a terrible cost: I had suffered 75% casualties.... :skull:
And this was only the beginning.... :charge:

I think it there MAY be a memory leak in the game and the fact that factions can get quite large with all pieces on the map which may slow/hang the game.
My suggestion would be to save the game prior to 562, exit the game, reboot your computer (to clear memory) and then load up the save game, to see it that works.
Again, use ctrl + s often for quick save.
Hope this helps.

Hi
OK, so you played 20 years straight. It may be that the other countries' armies are big.
As I mentioned before, the game will freeze on me from time to time in regular MTW especially after I've been playing for a while.
I've been playing FoR for the past two weeks and haven't had a problem.
However, if you have any previous saves, try starting up one and seeing if you can go past 562.

OK, I've been doing some work on the info-picture parchments. I've learned quite a bit today.
And I was thinking of doing something a bit different.
Let me know what you think.
Here is a screenshot of a NEW pic on the right hand side of the information parchment for the Roman Legions.
What do you think?

I'm doing some info parchment pics for the Roman factions in COLOUR, rather than the traditional info pics we have in the default game.
They look quite good in-game - very deep, rich colours.

I would hold off for a bit to try it as we will be releasing a new updated version of this mod with all the extra fixes, enhancements and new art work you see in the above posts.
It'll be worth it.
Keep checking back - and follow our progress.

In the mean time, I highly recommend the book, The Punic Wars, by Nigel Bagnall. I'm currently reading it right now and it is an excellent book that covers the history of the Punic Wars between Carthage and Rome.
Also, here are some excellent sites devoted to Roman military strategy and tactics. There are a lot of pictures and diagrams of legion formations and tactics:

Are you going to use the whole Romanisation proposed and described some time ago ?
2. This might be useful to your nomadic factions

Hi cegorach :)
Yes, I had read that discussion some time ago. And it is an interesting idea. But at the moment that is beyond what I am doing for FoR at this time.
It's taking a lot of time to gather up all the pics/information and to put them in the game the way I want. As such, finding the right pics and making them look good is time consuming. But it's still fun :)
However, I have over-hauled the building.txt to allow faster build times, and much, much more...
Also, I want to get the new version out within a reasonable time frame. LOL
But who knows in the future?
Cheers!

Update:
I've been busy.
Among a lot of other things, graphically, there are 32 NEW pictures for the Info_pic parchment pages and 224 NEW portrait pictures for Kings, Generals, Admirals, Emissaries, Princes, and Princesses for the Roman factions.
I also have a new loading screen picture which I think you'll like, in keeping with the Rome theme.
I'm currently text-editing a lot of parchment info screens for spelling, grammer, etc....
Also, I'm thinking of calling this version of FoR Mod - version 3.1 - instead of 3.0a,b,c, etc.... Does this sound acceptable?
On the loading screen I'll be putting this:
Fall of Rome Mod version 3.1
by
maximus decimus meridius
with
Pericles
Installer by Belisarivs
Is this acceptable to everyone?
Cheers!

I'm just a gamer like all of you, and I like the Roman period, so this is a great way to put into the game the things I like (and hope you all do too).
All the screenshots which are posted here are low res shots. So for those of you who play on high res, the pics will look even better.
I have been playing the Last Stand campaign as the West Romans, and all the changes and pics etc have really made it feel more immersive. After 42 years in the game, I have finally re-taken two lost provinces, fought countless battles, and still the raging hordes continue to plague the empire. New enemies arise all the time...
This has to be one of the most balanced and enjoyable campaigns I have played in a long time. There are always countless decisons to be made, strategies to be worked out, as well as trying to build a balanced force to deal with all the incursions. I am barely hanging on, so the tension of "what's coming next" always hangs over the player.
Cheers!

That is why the FoR is not my mod.
But it is a real shame that this mod was not finished.
All the work I am putting into this, is simply my humble attempt to polish up this mod in many ways so that we can all continue to enjoy it. I am simply picking up the torch to help move this mod along.
I, too, was really looking forward to Max doing an Attila Campaign. I think we all waited for about two years for version 3.1 to come out. Unfortunately, Max seems to have abandoned this mod a long time ago.
I only want to share the work I am doing with the wider gaming audience.
Max's, mine, and your name are on the loading screen strictly to let players know that it is Max's mod, that I am actively working on it, and that you are willing to do all the work of putting it into an installer and making it available for download.
However, I don't want to offend anyone.

Punic campaign is definitely off the scope of mod (about 600-700 years, btw).
Attila was in preparation, but Maximus suddenly and unexpectedly ceased development ans is no longer active.
Seldom freeze is pay for total conversion. Next time try to press Space bar. It helped me quite often.

There are portraits I extracted from RTW. They are slightly smaler than ones used in MTW. That is why there is added folder "Examples" where is shown how to these look when transformed to MTW size. Choose those which fit you best and I'll convert them to proper sizes and include them in installer.

Hi
I think I found a solution to providing everyone with credit for working on the mod now, and in the past. Basically, I did up the loading screen, whereby, Max is given sole credit for the mod itself, while in a seperate section, people are listed for the work they did on each verison. I think everyone should be happy with this
I think the idea with the RTW portraits is an excellent idea. However, as has been noted in previous posts, in lieu of not having any alternative, I opted to go with a classical statue look for the portraits. It was exhaustive work, but I think I found all I need for the mod. And they look good! I even think they look better than having the RTW portraits, and it does give the mod its own distinctive look and feel. Thanks for the offer though
I am getting near completion of version 3.1. I'll probaby have to upload it and I'll send you the link for download.

Hi axel:
I blitzed through a campaign as the Vandals until 560 AD and I had NO game freeze or CTDs. In fact, I've had no problems playing this mod at all.
I am not sure what the problem can be with your campaign. Maybe it's a corrupt file? Maybe, it's one of a random act?

Here is a little preview of all of the changes I have made in FoR for version 3.1.
There are many, many changes, and I think you should see quite a difference in your gaming experience.
In particular there are now 286 NEW portraits that have been added to the game, and I have now added portraits for the Assassins and Spies!
Here are the changes:
1) All known bugs to date have been fixed in version 3.1.
2) There are 32 NEW pictures for the Info_picture parchment pages.
3) All ships, for all factions, now have era-appropriate info-pics such as Triremes, Biremes, etc.
4) All Roman factions now have full colour info_pics representing many of their respective units.
5) There are 286 NEW portrait pictures for the King, General, Admiral, Emissary, Assassin, Spy, Prince, and Princess folders for all the Roman factions.
6) The Crusader_building txt file was over-hauled, shortening build times for many buildings. Most building prerequisites, however, have NOT been changed. This should reduce the frustration, but not the challenge, of building military units. This should be a big boost to both the AI and player alike, since many buildings are often destroyed when a province has been invaded. This reduced building time should help get the players up to speed again when faced with having to re-build specific buildings.
7) All siege engines and siege buildings have been removed from the game. No factions, including rebels, will have siege units. The AI is too incompetent to use siege equipment. By eliminating these units and buildings, the AI will now concentrate its funds and time on building useful buildings and military units. The AI will now field armies only with useful military units.
8) Second and third tier Foundry Buildings will now produce a modest income in addition to improving faction stats such as morale.
9) Certain Barbarian buildings such as “Barbarian Invasion”, “Warrior Hold”, etc will improve faction unit statistics such as morale, valour, discipline, etc. Right click on the appropriate buildings to see the specific trait boost.
10) The Crusader_units txt file was reviewed, resulting in numerous changes to many units' stats. For example, ships for all factions, in all periods have now been balanced. All units in all Roman factions have been balanced. Generally, the more expensive the unit, the better it will be.
11) Orthodox Bishops, Cardinals, Inquisitors, and GrandInquisitors have been removed from the game.
12) The buildings - “Cathedral”, “Monastary”, “Reliquary” - are still buildable. However, instead of producing their respective agents (the Orthodox Bishops, Cardinals, Inquisitors, and GrandInquisitors), they will now increase morale AND produce a modest income.
13) Bishops are buildable, but they are available ONLY in the LATE period, and, in addition to needing the Church, you will also need to build Shipyard4 and Foundry3. This will result in almost never seeing Bishops in the game.
14) There is a new loading screen picture in keeping with the Roman theme. This indicates the version of the mod as well as listing mod credits.
15) All parchment info screens have been edited for spelling, grammer, etc....
Nice work, this will be a significant improvement! When approaching the credits, be sure that NodachiSam is given credit for creating the new map (with Roman province names).

I've over-hauled everything.
I found a number of units' stats were unbalanced. The ship stats in particular are just one example. The same goes for a number of Roman units.
But it still won't be easy. For every plus I've given the Romans (reduced build time), I've also given one to the barbarians (increased morale with barb invasions).
I'm way a head of you re: NodachiSam
His map is superb, and adds so much to the game....
I've pretty much included everyone I could locate either in this thread or in Max's readme who contributed a significant amount of time to this mod....
Cheers!

I'm just tidying up some loose ends here and there and testing everything out in-game. As always, I find the odd niggle here and there, and I'm re-touching a few pics as well....
I want everything to be perfect for you guys
Also, you wanted an Attila Campaign. Well, there is one already in the mod... well, sort of...
If you play the West Romans in the "Last Stand" campaign, the Huns will come-a-calling before you know it.
In fact, I'm going to post a few screen shots of my current game.
Pericles
02-08-2007, 00:47
Here is the first screenshot of one of my current games as the West Romans. This is looking west of Italy. I have beaten off many attacks, and have just recently regained two lost provinces.
I want to go on the offensive but whomever I attack, means that I have other countries waiting on my borders to attack me, in return.
I am currently also being attacked at sea. So this means building a fleet to protect Italy from sea invasion. I have almost no troops in Italy, as they are all on my borders to stop the invasions.
And my economy is practically maxed out.
Right now the powerful Vandals and Huns (the Huns are just to the east of me. You'll see them in the next screenshot) are neutral. Heaven help me if they decide to go "Barbarian" on me. I have requested an alliance with the Huns several times, but each time the Khan politely says "not at this time" and "I have no intention of attacking you" even while he's busy whomping the daylights out of the East Romans.
Yeah, right.... :inquisitive:

Here is the next screenshot. It is looking east of Italy. I am the red player. You'll notice that the Huns (olive green) are perched nicely on my eastern borders, while the Germans (black) are busy sharpening their swords on my northern borders. And as usual, there are lots of "Barbarian Invasion" markers sitting menacingly near my lands.
It will take just one mistake on my part and all hell will break loose. Those dang barbarian hordes are just waiting for an opportunity to pounce.
Actually, one Barbarian Invasion Maker (loaded with Visigoths) did break through my borders and invaded Italy. It took me forever to trap and destroy it. It kept hopping from province to province, and I had to scrounge up the troops to surround it. I don't want that to happen again.
Meanwhile, the Huns have taken several provinces from the East Romans (purple). I think it will be just a matter of time before Mr. Hun turns his attention towards me.
The Huns have battled their way to the Mediterranean Sea and they are building ports and shipyards. That means I have to keep building more ships. Without naval superiority, Italy will be lost. I simply don't have the income and troops to protect everything. In Italy, all I have in the various provinces are some low level garrison troops. It seems that wise Mr. Hun senses this and is building his little fleet of ships to come pay me a visit...:skull:

Here is the full Readme of Fall of Rome version 3.1
*** Fall of Rome version 3.1 Mod for Medieval Total War - Viking Invasion ***
This mod is intended only for personal use and not for commercial use.
Thank you for downloading and playing Fall of Rome v3.1.
I'm a gamer just like you, and I enjoyed playing Fall of Rome Mod v3.0 by Max. However, it still felt unfinished, and since the original mod creator had moved on to other things, I thought it would be fun to "finish" this mod by making many changes to it, especially graphically.
Version 3.1 is the result of the changes I have made to the Fall of Rome Mod. Take a look through this readme for more information regarding all the changes that have been made to the mod.
For the best playing experience it is advisable to play any of the Roman factions in any of the five campaigns. They have the toughest position since all barbarian factions are trying to invade their territories. All other factions are also playable, so playing another faction should give you an interesting playing experience.
Many thanks to: NodochiSam for the new strategy map; Lord Zimoa of Flanders for the ship pictures; Belisarius for the installer; and to Aurelian for the armhorse bug fix.
I hope you have fun!
Pericles
Here are the changes in the mod:
VERSION 3.1
9) Certain Barbarian buildings such as Barbarian Invasion, Warrior Hold, etc will improve faction unit statistics such as morale, valour, discipline, etc.
12) The buildings - Cathedral, Monastary, Reliquary - are still buildable.
15) Start_pos files have been changed. Generally, all Roman factions in all campaigns receive slightly less starting income; most other factions receive slightly more income.
16) All parchment info screens have been edited for spelling, grammer, etc....

*** INCREASING AND DECREASING GAME DIFFICULTY ***
* REMEMBER TO BACKUP YOUR ORIGINAL FILES BEFORE MAKING ANY CHANGES *
1) You can increase or decrease the difficulty of any of the five campaigns in this mod by simply giving some or all of the other factions MORE MONEY. To do this, go to the following folder and click on the campaign file you want to play:
C:\Program Files\Total War\Medieval - Total War\campmap\startpos
2) For example, let's say you want to play the EARLY 311AD campaign. Open it and scroll down until you see this:
//========================================
//Starting Treasury
//Sets the amount of cash available to
//each faction at the start of the game.
//you can specify 4 values for the four
//difficulty levels in the order EASY,
//NORMAL, HARD and EXPERT. Specify only one
//value to start all difficulty levels with
//the same size treasury.
//If you don't set this, the default
//is 2000 florins for all difficulty levels.

3) Now, select the faction and the difficulty level you want to play. Let's say you want to play the Italians (Romans in game) on the HARD level. If you want to INCREASE the difficulty then INCREASE the amount of money every other faction gets at the HARD level.
4) Once you have made the changes save the file, exit, and play the faction you selected in the game.
5) You can do the same thing for any faction, in any of the campaigns. This provides virtually unlimited replayability.
Have fun!

To all:
Finally there is installer of Fall of Rome v 3.1:
http://rapidshare.com/files/15948040/FoR_3.1.exe.html
Amount of work done by Pericles is far from insignificant.
It contains all new features from previous versions + new portraits and things Pericles mentioned before.
When installing, select directly Total War folder.
And don't forget to enjoy one of the best mods for MTW ever made.

Yes, historically the Hun Empire went belly-up in the latter half of the 5th Century due to defeat at Chalons and Attila's death.
But the Huns in this campaign can change history.
From wiki:
"Attila (c. 406 - 453) was the monarch of the Hun people from 434 until his death. His empire stretched from the Netherlands to the Ural river and from the Danube River to the Baltic Sea (see map below). During his rule he was one of the most fearsome of the Western and Eastern Roman Empires' enemies: he invaded the Balkans twice, besieging Constantinople on the second invasion; he marched through Gaul (modern day France) as far as Orleans before being defeated at the Battle of Chalons; and he drove the western emperor Valentinian III from his capital at Ravenna in 452."
In the "Last Stand" campaign the Huns will come at you - so it's best to have at least two-6 star generals to face them. In my current game their empire is HUGE...
Cheers!

I wonder if we can find a permanent home for this Mod?
Maybe at 3D Downloads?
Here is the link:

Where can we download this mod??
Great thanks to Pericles, Belisarius, and of course Maximus for this incredible work!!!
I can't wait to play it. FoR 3.0 is one of my favorite mods ever.
One little problem - where can I download it?
Is there a dial-up friendly location? I can get about 30 MB before my connection will time out (enough to get 3.0) but probably not to get 3.1 without a resuming friendly site.
Thank you!!!!

There is one called Diadochi that would have been a ripper if it was finished ,, It seems a lot of the work has been started ...... just thought i'd mention it ,, cheers .. DTS .. BTW I'll be loading up 3.1 just as soon as my hardrive doubles in size and my connection speed triples ..

Why doesn't it work for you?
What browser do you use?
I put MTW down to focus on work and family for a few months, and return recently, and to my delight I find some noble soul has picked up one of my favorite mods and begun working on it! So first, thank you Pericles.
I, however, seem to be having a bit of a problem. I reinstalled a copy of MTW: VI 2.01 fresh to my harddrive. Downloaded FoR3.01 from Rapidshare as listed above. Ran the installer, selected my MTW base directory (in this case: C:\Program Files\MTW) However, when I go to run the game, I receive this error:
Column_building_faction_association
Unknown faction specified: column 20, row 9
FN_Romans
Any idea what may be causing this? I do not have XL installed (in fact, I reinstalled VI just in case, and am still having the issue...)
Any help you can provide would be much appreciated. Thanks!

kbromer and Aurelian:
Hmmmm...
I am not sure what the problem could be. My master mod files work flawlessly.
I sent the files to Belisarivs, and I noticed that he had changed one faction to be under a folder named "Roman".
I had asked him to install everything to make sure it all worked OK before he posted it for download. Other than a few spelling mistakes he didn't mention anything else that was wrong. So I assumed that the new install exe v3.1 would work fine.
Obviously not.
I hope that Belisarivs will be able to check his install of this mod to see if anything has been changed to it, and to ensure that it works OK.
dimitrios the samian:
Currently, nothing else TW related except for the fact that I tweaked all of the XL Mod files for my own use. In addition I also do modding on several other games....
Cheers!
Thank you so much for the quick response Pericles. The problem could very well be on my(our) end as well, I'm definitely willing to acknowledge that :embarassed:
OTOH, does that particular syntax look familiar to you? "Column_building_faction_association"?
I really don't have a problem doing a manual fix, but I'd prefer not to spend the time learning the MTW engine calls if at all possible, so if you know what call is being made there, perhaps I can figure out where it's calling to and why it's throwing that error?
Either way, thanks for your help and responsiveness, and of course, thanks again for picking this project back up, I was quite fearful this game was going to go the way of some of my old-school favorites and I'd be digging the files out of a P3-500mhz machine 10 years from now the same way I occasionallyhave to dig files out my old P-50, or even 486dx! Needless to say... :wall:

I wish I knew how many people have downloaded and installed the mod. It would be interesting to see if anyone else has had a problem with it.
I am also not familiar with the game error you mention. I did substitute my master files of the "unit" and "building" txt files for the same files that were in the download but they check out OK.
There is one way to narrow down the problem. Here is a link just to my v3.1 files (about 12 MB). Just install these files over the ones in your current Fall of Rome game. You will have to do it manually though. It should only take a couple of minutes. I have included a small readme with each folder letting you know where the files go.
http://rapidshare.com/files/15583840/FallofRome_v3.1_Pericles.zip.html
Once you've done all that, start your game and let me know the results.
I downloaded 3.1 when first available, had the error message about Romans and fixed it really easily - but I've wiped the Mod now and not 100% sure what my fix was. I think all I did was delete the startpos files that had nothing to do with the mod (because they didn't declare faction Romans) - then it started and played fine. Hope my memory is right and that helps - Pericles has done a lot to polish this mod up so it's a shame if people cannot access it.

Thanks western.
I think you may have found the nub of the solution.
It is unfortunate that Belisarivs has not responded in this thread about the install he put together.
I do remember that at the last minute he made a "Roman" folder and placed all the new portraits in it. This could be the source of the FN_Roman error.
If people have the full version 3.1 of the mod installed, then would they check the following:
1) temporarily remove the start_pos files
2) check to see if the game starts and if the new portraits appear in the game.

So, let's clarify the solution.
You had the full v3.1 Fall of Rome Mod installed on your computer. When you started the mod, you received the FN_Roman error.
You then installed manually the 12MB v3.1 files I posted a few posts above.
When you did this the errors were corrected and the mod works perfectly now.
If this is correct, then something was changed in the files after I sent them to be put into the installer. Because the files you downloaded that fixed the error are the same files I use in my game, and they were the same files I sent to be placed in the new installer.
At least we now know where the error is.
Thank you very much.
Cheers!
Just confirming what other people found.
I used Pericle's rapid share (11.4 MB) file and manually replaced over the original FoR 3.0 files... AND then deleted the campmap/startpos and everything ran fine - perfect - not a single problem.
So if people were having problems with 3.1 self installer - either the problem is solved by deleting the startpos files or there might be an issue with how the files are unpacked.
-
Once again THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!, THANK YOU!!!! to Pericles and the team for this amazing job completing Maximus's work!!! It really feels like a finished mod - and an amazing one at that.
Playing East Romans in Justinian scenario now on Expert - and getting attacked by everyone in sight... I LOVE IT!!! :-)

Hi all.
Installer is fine. Problem is in Startpos files. It seems, that MTW starts parsing them all at the beginning.
When I deleted all startpos files instead of those provided by mod, all went fine.
The only change I did was, that portraits for Roman factions are loaded from Roman folder instead of catholic. That cannot do any trouble.
Therefore I suggest to empty startpos directory before installing FoR 3.1. Weird is, that I didn't have such issues with 3.0.
My internet connection i8sn't very fast, therefore I'm not very eager to upload it too often. So, if someone uploads it elsewhere ....
Sorry for additional workaround. But it works.

Hope my memory is right and that helps - Pericles has done a lot to polish this mod up so it's a shame if people cannot access it.
Right. That is solution.
Pericles
Just in case you visit this thread - long quiet - I wanted to say I am still playing this Mod and you did great work to polish it up. Did you stop with the release or have you done any more?
One odd thing I've noticed: SarmatianCav crash the Mod when you try to fight a battle as the Romans. That used to be the case with ballistas too, until you removed the siege equipent. It is only the Romans that this happens to - there's something odd about that faction. Any ideas??:help:

This mod is great, im enjoying myself tremendously. good job.
It isn't SarmatianCav who cause the crash - it's the unit named AlanHeavyCav in the UnitProd file (who confused me by being named Sarmatian Heavy Cavalry in the game):dizzy2:
I read that this mod ends in 850, does that mean we will see Vikings?

Hello Maximus! That would be great if you could upload the 3.1 files. I'd love to give it a try. Is 3.1 in playable condition, or will it require a little extra modding? Let us know!

Aurelian.
ok i'll do it , i think that these files could be easily merged into the Pericles and Belisarius' mod version .
or you can use these files ad a stand alone mod ..
anyway there are two new campaign:
The restoration of the empire - 265°ad (the Aurelian's campaign to reconquest the roman empire vs queen Zenobia and gallic empire)
Heraclius the first Crusader - 610°ad (the byzantine empire vs the persians and the avars..)
and there should be a new recruitment system (for romans ) based on comitatenses and palatine barracks.
i will upload them in the next days ..

Wow! New campaigns with two of my favorite emperors.
I'll download those as soon as they're up!
I'm also looking forward to seeing the changes to the recruitment system. I've thought about changing recruiting for some time in this mod... so I look forward to seeing how you've approached it.
Thanks!

Hi everyone
I'm currently playing Civilization. I went to look for a scenario inspiration revolves around Rome and Gaul (Gallic warriors are hot lol). I found this and guess what? I decided to make a fresh install of MTW and play this again instead lol. I kinda miss the real-time battle aspect. I loaded the first campaign as West Goths. It's only been couples of turns. I invaded Pannonia first and then Croatia (I forgot the Roman name). Seems pretty easy playing this faction but I'm kinda short in cash as I didn't realize that I had to invade right away instead of building my province lol. Congrats on the 3.1 and thanks for the work.:viking:

Yeah fellas, as soon as I download it, I'll start with merger and creation of installer. :smash:

Sorry guys.
My MTW keeps crashing even when freshly installed. Therefore I cannot test whether are changes merged correctly.
Could someone merge it?
Brief look shows, that Pericles did most work with eliminating Inquisitors and so, heavy ships and siege engines.
He also put in portraits and pictures of units. And new map was added, too.
Max added 2-3 campaigns, two factions (perhaps more, but I found only East Romans and Palmyrans) and changed several units.
Therefore I suggest to take mod provided by Max as basis and then implement changes made by Pericles again.
I'll try to PM him, whether he would be willing to do so or help at least.
I don't know if you will get anything out of Pericles, looks like he hasn't been on in a while :(

Sorry guys. Can't get my MTW working, therefore I can't make merger ant test if everything is in order.
Perhaps some damned Windows update screwed it or so.:wall:
Meh its ok, its worth the wait :) there really isn't much difference between the 2 versions I think so I'm still happy :D

Hi Axel ,, Looks lke there a very few people playing this Mod ,, It looks like some glitch in a file somewhere ,, I reckon its best you play a different faction and hope it doesn't happen again .... cheers .
Hi mate
Yes i started playing Twilight of the eagles 374AD and i am playing the Vandals again just to look if its a Vandal problem or sommething to do maybe with sommething else and no problem so far, i think maybe i could be the Africa country ??? it always happens there by clicking next turn it stops thinking and it just stops and it dose nothing else.
well i hope somme one knows or could find out wot the problem may be.
if you got yours mate trey to play the vandals see of it happens to you my friend :2thumbsup:
Alvar Nuñez de Navarre

well, i'm having the same problems there axel, except the CTD's would appear to be completely random. i can re-start the game, take the same period, factions, map and units and it can then just mysteriously work....
sometimes it crashes when i just click on one of the periods, other times it will crash when i've selected everything and click the 'Ready' button.
it has happened on all periods/factions at some point. like i said it appears to be completely random :wall:
i would say it happens about once out of every 4 or 5 games on average.
still doesn't stop me playing FoR though, it's such a great mod (Vandals and Ostrogoths ftw)
oh and yeah, hello ~
Hi Alvar Nuñez de Navarre
its only happens to me by the vandals in Africa if i click next then the thinking stops shine and my PC just freeze ?? i hope somme one knows a solution or a fix for this.
But i still play this wonderfull mod i just love it :2thumbsup:

Does anybody know where to find the download?
Check here http://www.atomicgamer.com/directory.php?id=2731
Your posted link Stazi is for 3.0 version, while for 3.1? All previous link for 3.1 don't works!!!
Try to send PMs to mod creators or people who posted in this thread. Maybe someone still has the 3.1 version.
Maximus Decimus Meridius(creator of this mod) and Peicles arent't active from this site from 2007!!!

I have been able to access a hard drive from my old computer. This was my slave drive and I have loads of stuff on there. A folder I created "downloads" has three Fall of Rome 3.1 downloads in it. The one Pericles released "FallofRome_v3.1_Pericles 11.4 MB", the one with the installer from Belisarivs that is 3.0/3.1 combo I believe 43.5 MB, and the one released after all this which was "Maximus Decimus Meridius Fall_of_Rome_3.0-3.1-_Total_War 33.7 MB". FileFront is where I uploaded these. I don't suppose the creators would mind. Here are the links: :beam:

Thank you so much for uploading these mods again! I used to have these but lost them. Downloading now!
What is the difference between the three files to choose from for download? I downloaded and installed the FoR 3.1 exe and got it working, but I also read that there is a version with a Heraclius campaign and I'd like to play that as well.

Anybody ever figure out how to get the 'Fall of Rome v3.0 Map v1.0b Created by NodachiSam, January 21, 2006' to show the Roman names on the campaign map. It's included in the installer from Belisarivs that is version 3.0/3.1 43.5 MB. While in the city building browser you can run the mouse pointer over the city and it shows the Roman name but on the campaign map itself it still shows the medieval names.

Interestingly enough, Pericles had the exact same problem and provided a fix in this post (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?31550-Fall-of-Rome-Total-War&p=1391893&viewfull=1#post1391893)
Nodachisam's map file is in the (Game Directory)/textures/campmap folder, called MapTex2.tga, which is the high resolution version of the map.
Right there with it is the original game map called MapTex.tga, which is the low res version of the map.
As noted by Pericles, for some graphics card related reason, your game is defaulting to the lowres file - if you can't solve the reason why the game is choosing the low res version, one alternative is to do as he suggests and change the high res file to a low res version of exactly the same size. Not sure how he did it, but that seems to be the solution.

The third link in Baron's post contains Max's new campaigns, including Heraclius. Inside the zipped file, look inside the Loc/Eng/ folder and you'll see his original campaigns, plus several new ones. Not sure which is Heaclius, but just copy all the new ones into the same directory in your FoR game directory, and test them out.

I thought I had the map working right but it kept crashing. Seems when you resize the MapTex2, it must be exact. I got it close but not exact. This is Maximus Decimus Meridius Fall_of_Rome_3.0-3.1-_Total_War 33.7 MB and it was released in 2008 one year after the Pericles 3.1 version. Some of the units and the campaigns are a little different and it also has one additional campaign "Heraclius the First Crusader 610°AD". Enjoy! https://www.mediafire.com/?be5hlj9zwvvuqqj

Hello Stazi & Baron
I have tried on 3 occasions to load up Fall of Rome & on all occasions Campaigns are not working , instant CTD's
Good news is , I can atleast enjoy Custom Battles .
I think it has something to do with map that Belisarius included in his all in one installer .
I have no skills in looking to find the solution or problem .
Is anybody playing this mod from any of the 3 links provided above by Stazi ?
Can anyone help sort out this problem ?
I will try loading Max's 2.0 FOR , then manually fixing those dodgy bifs & once done , I will add Pericles extras , thus it may all function on the original map .
But we still have that last addition that Maximus provided with some new textures & new Campaign .
Any help appreciated .
Cheers
D

@ dimitrios the samian - Go to your Medieval - Total War\campmap\startpos folder and delete the vanilla TUTORIAL.TXT, VIKING.TXT, EARLY.TXT, HIGH.TXT, and LATE.TXT. ~;)
See post #918
I can confirm that this mod works if you do what Baron von Manteuffel says in the previous post. This mod is outstanding. It makes me want to do a Fall of Rome 2 oneday perhaps.
