Sorry , I think within 15 days cause i'm involved in Middle Earth total War Mod.
anyway the patch will have the Aurelian campaign (270ad), a revisited 306ad campaign with a new roman faction and a 610ad campaign named "Heraclius the first Crusader".

Any chance of having historical generals and kings, such as King Arthur? He's mentioned in the Romano-British faction description, but there's no sign of him in the game.

I love the mod but my area of interest for some time now has been the Byzantines and I have noticed some visual as well as naming errors. Not many though. First Byzantine spearmen were know as skutatos or Skutatoi, and had an oval shield (as the triangular shield did not show up for some time after the period portrayed in the mod), secondly byzantine infantry consisted almost entirely of spearmen, swordsmen were not that prevalent although many skutatoi did in fact carry a sword as a side arm, and I am very pleased that you gave them the pike they actually used rather then the short spear they are usually portrayed using. Another thing I would like to mention is that the byzantines, unlike other nations at the time had a uniform which they wore under their armour and it was red just like the people they came from...blue was also used sometimes but not often. Other then that the mod is great and Im sure those errors can be fixed easily enough, keep up the great work and I hope I have helped. Thank you for hearing me out. ~:)

I think, that it could be good to remove cardinals, inquisitors.... as well as gungalleys and other stronger ships and give the romans something better. I think that quality of roman and byzantine ships was better than those of barbarian or equal, but not lower.

Good Observation Belisarius ,, I agree with you ,, some fine tuning for more realism ,, also perhaps the country names on the map could be changed .. Keep up the good work Max your Mod deserves a title screen and its own launcher ..

I thing that Campania should be renamed to Latium, because Campania is shire around Naples, Genoa (I can't recall its name in mod) to Liguria (according Ligurian Sea) and Milan (in mod Liguria) to something else. Now it has name Lombardia, so it could be OK.

Another idea.
Strengh of charge of cavalry units should be reduced. Because AFAIK charging with lances weald underarm was used since 11.-12. century.
I also think, that it would be wise to reduce area of training of units for all factions.
I think, that main number of men for Legions came from Italy, Galia and Hispania. I don't know about legions raised in England and one came from Africa. See the link http://www.livius.org/le-lh/legio/legions.htm The same for Byzantines and others. Main source of troops for Byzantines (East Romans) was Asia Minor. That's why they became so weak after Mantzinkert.
pretend I'm an idiot- how do I install 2.0?
Nevermind, got it working. I found the instructions. AWESOME MOD!

I noted some posts on Catholic Church in alte empire as history teacher I have some suggestions.
In late empire the Christian religion became a strong support to Christian emperor: the real difference through Estearn and Western Empire was that in Stilicon era the rebellion of arian roman- barbarian units gave a good motivation for people of Eastern empire to go in army to defend their culture..
The generous (but neutral on religion questions) politicy of Stilicon in Western left the empire without the support of the pagan roman Senate and did not give a motive for urban popolation to go in the army to defend empire.
On other words Empire was seen by most people as an avid tax machine that gives taxes then to foreigns(teh barbarian empire troops)

Well I have succeded in upload the mod it seems that problems came by teh wrong folder downloads. But pehaps i got abug if you get teh West empire faction( Constantinus) in 304 the gane crashes with none other faction crashes.
I'm a newbie, but I loved Fall of Rome 2.0 and 2.1. Where can I find this excellent mod (3.0)??? Something as cool as this deserves more publicity. Thanks again for your great work Maximus.
First of all, this is a very nice mod - great fun! In fact, until the save-game bug is fixed it's the only "Rome - Total War" I'm currently playing! However there are a few disconcerting graphics bugs:
1) Peasants - While standing, the unit looks fine, but as soon as it starts moving, all you see are waving spears.
2) Crossbowmen - Same problem (except shields & bows instead of spears)
3) Trebizond Archers - A similar bug, except when they move, the individual archers appear to have levitated 20+ feet into the air. So much for hiding in the woods! ~;)
4) Sarmatian Infantry - The reverse of Peasants. When these guys move they look fine, but when they stand in formation all you see is a forest of spears.
There may be more, but these are the only ones I've come across. I suggest running some kind of test that uses every unit in the game to see if others have this kind of problem.
Minor Errata:
1) While playing as the Ostrogoths in the Second Campaign, the Eastern Roman Emperor offered his daughter in marriage, but there was a problem with his name - it showed up in the offer window as: "Imperator Maxentius IIof_Clan_Districts##21!! This label does not exist!!"
2) In the Alliance List (the window which shows diplomatic status of all factions), the Papacy shows up as "Pope Sylvesterroman_numerals##-I!! This label does not e...". I realize the Papacy doesn't exist on the map, but you might want to clean up this description - or replace it with something like "No Pope in this Mod".
I think many of the problems are coming from people who are unzipping files into wrong folders, etc, etc. . .
.....and the graphics problems reported above are another example. :embarassed: After re-reading the entire thread, and noting the similarity with the earlier non-problem involving the Gepid Lancers, I spent a few hours performing a painstaking reinstall, and the problem with the Sarmatian Infantry "went away". I can't easily test the others, but assume they were also spurious.
That said, the text problem with the Pope still remains, and by extension (although again, testing is impossible), it's likely the "marriage offer" problem does too.

This is truly a fine mod! It sort of rounds out the entire MTW series.
I was just reading through as much of this thread as I have time for and understand why you had to make all Catholic factions Orthodox and invading factions Arian (the latter is fairly historical too). Was just curious if there's any way that I can mod the name for East/West Roman's religion to show up as "Catholic" within the game and whether there's a way that I can get my Western Roman, Romano British factions, etc. to speak Latin while in battle? This is mostly for asthetic reasons I know but thought I'd ask.
Really great work!
metatron
03-29-2005, 20:48
I thought they were speaking Latin... Maybe it's the soundpack.
Anyway, the barbarians are "catholic" so they can launch crusades called "Barbarian Invasions" and so they don't fight as much amongst each other.
Telesforo

:balloon2: Strange crusades (or barbarian invasions!)
In 470 campaign Visigoth attacks often Plaestine with Crusades the same other barbarians do. I suspect that when there have problems with their normal new crusade-invasions they get the original Crusade Lands..

Hmmm.. can't seem to edit on this forum. Anyways, nevermind I fixed it. I unzipped main into the totalwar directory rather than the medieval directory. The directions were sort of confusing. The instructions just say the "main" directory.

Adendum: the download is a RAR file (I guess). Is the download above the complete version or is it a patch of the mod? What is the actual download process? Should I follow the various instructions explained in the thread's first post (copy this file here, and that file there etc.) or is this Mod. as it stands now, more like XL Mod. where things go automatically to their proper place?

Great mod !
...but I did notice a few "weird" things:
-the names on the campaignmap are still the old ones
-what's the point of muster fields if you can already built units ?
-farm upgrades available when basic farms aren't build yet
None of them are in any way ruining my enjoyment of course ~D
I'm playing as the Danes, I pick on rebel states and weakened regions near me, but it seems like the romans are advancing quickly.... :duel:

Compress your sounds to ogg (which will further reduce size but preserve quality) with oggdrop http://marcopon.trustedwebhost.com/rarewares/oggdropXPdV1.8.3-generic.zip , then download http://www.rarewares.org/files/ogg/oggdec1.0.1.zip , make bat file, and that's all, efficient and pretty simple. I wonder why people still use mp3, when it was made completely redundant by vorbis and musepack.
I would do this, but my PC is too slow to serve as compressor of higher numbers of files.

No idea what's causing this, but there's a bug that causes your entire system to freeze (a hard boot is the only way out). It was encountered in 502 while playing as the West Romans ("Last Stand of the West" campaign), and occurs during the "Thinking" phase after pressing the end turn button. The first three portraits "light up" (the last of these is the Arabs), but then everything freezes (the 4th portrait is the Anglo-Saxons). The background music continues, but keyboard and mouse and totally frozen.
I tried some limited testing (different moves during my 502 turn; starting in 501 and hitting end turn twice with no moves), but the freeze occurred every time.
Edit#1 - I ran two additional tests:
1) Started from a 499 save, made only minor moves and hit end turn each year, and it froze in exactly the same way at exactly the same point (after 502 turn)
2) Started from a 494 save, same as above - same result - a freeze at the end of the 502 turn between the 3rd and 4th portrait.
Edit#2 - I ran one final test:
1) Started from a 482 save, played defensively and hit end turn each year, and THIS TIME it froze in 496! However, the freeze came at the same point - while thinking, between the 3rd and 4th portrait (which are still Arabs and Anglo-Saxons).

Hi Kull ,,, Pity this bug is in their frustrating you in the campaign ....aarhh ..
Anyway Max is going to release an updated version very soon , self installing with a few tweaks and fixes ,, maybe he may check out your problem .
Sorry i can't help you more ...cheers
Hopefully he can track down the source of the problem, because this is a great mod, and it would be terrible if it contains an unfixed CTD-bug. I will happily email the two different pre-CTD save game files to anyone if that will help.
Speaking of which, is it possible to open a save game in "edit mode"? I'd look into this myself if I knew how to do that.
Found a CTD Bug:
Playing as "The Romans" in The Struggle for Empire campaign. I bribed one of the Magyar armies in Hungary, and the CTD occurs when you take the resulting battle to the Battle Map. If you auto-resolve, there's no CTD (so it looks like one of those barb units is the problem).
(Edit: Ran some Tests)
OK, I auto-resolved and won, which gave me 4 Magyar unit types to test. The test was to invade a nearby Barb with only one of each unit type and use the Battle Map. Results:
1) Sarmatian Heavy Cavalry = CTD
2) Alan Mercenary Cavalry = OK
3) Alan Cataphract = OK
4) Peasant = CTD (!!)
Not encouraging - two of four unit types contain fatal errors.
Hmmm, the plot thickens. It turns out this CTD does NOT occur if the AI uses the "bad" units during a battle! What would cause this CTD to affect only the human player? I've seen the AI use peasants and Sarmatian Heavy Cav on the battle map, so it doesn't seem to be a graphics problem.
This "bug" also affects all siege units, too. The AI can use them on the battlefield, I cannot.
Edit: Now I'm totally confused. I went back to an earlier game which I played as the Danes, and they HAVE Sarmatian Heavy Cav and can USE it on the battle map!! How could a unit cause a CTD when used by one human faction but work for another??

Hey i love the mod but i have a few questions and a few things to point out.
First the questions. I have MTW XL and i forogot to make a copy of my MTW folder. I thought XL left all the folders alone but rememberd it changed the map on both normal and XL. anyway the added on provances are unexesable they arnt even there old ones and on the mini map they dont show at all looks like water. and are you going to make a campain map with the names of the newly formed provances so when a barbarian invasion is launched we dont have to search for where its heading. If you already have and i just need to delete the XL map please tell me where to do so.
Now for the History, lol sorry im a Historian and a Pagan so i tend to point things out when people get religion wrong. ok the Saxons were Pagan and pretty much the cause of the viking invasion. The Saxons were Germanic Pagan and the last surviving ones. Believing in Woden Donar ect. I happen to be Germanic Pagan and no where my people were. (sorry im acting snoby) but the Saxons were not Arian and the Danes were not either. Those are the only factions i know that are wrong i know that both Goth tribes were Christian not sure what form of Christianity tho so cant bitch their lol anyway if you wana take your mod up all the way to Viking Campain i know the full story of how it began (Blame the Franks and Charlamage). BTW i am a modder in a way still learning but i saw that the Huns were pagan and could make a barbarian invasion. can Pagan Culture make them as well?
Besides the glitch im having its fine and ill change the Saxons and Danish religions if they can still make the Barb Invasion if not i can deal with it it truely is a great mod you have filled in the gap CA skipped since they went from Ancient to Medieval altho backwards thank you for giving us back the Dark Ages  if you have managed to read all of this than ~ to you

pyradyn,
Since Max is very busy these days, I will try to answer your questions.
1st you need to install Fall of Rome over a vanilla copy of MTW-VI. I haven't tested it, but I am pretty sure installing it over XL will not work.
The problem with the religions is that we are limited to Christian (Orthodox & Catholic), Pagan and Muslim. We chose Arian because most of the Germanic barbarians converted to Arian Christianity.
You will also notice there is no Zoroastrian religion for the Persians. I have been experimenting with changing the Heretics to Zoroastrians, and it seems to be working.
If you change your Saxons to Pagans, they will most likely become a Steppe Nomad type faction, and it may require some unit editing.
A couple new maps are also in the works. A basic campaign map with the proper province names, and a new campaign map set around 600 AD, with new provinces.
The new provinces are as follows:
In Italy:
Venetia
Forum Julii
Calabria
Spoletum
Beneventum
-----------------> Papal States renamed to Pentapolis
In Greece:
Peloponnesos
Epirus
Macedonia
Hellas
In Asia Minor:
Optimaton
Opsikion
Bukellarion
Thrakesion
Kibrryraiots
Anatolikon
Armeniakon
ok and good luck with the Heritic change its tricky processes thanx for your help
A couple new maps are also in the works. A basic campaign map with the proper province names, and a new campaign map set around 600 AD, with new provinces.
Really glad to hear you guys are updating the names on the map, that will definitely add to the atmosphere. BTW - is it just me who's experiencing problems with units that one faction can use but others can't?
I was reading another thread and learned about the -ian trick, so I'll try to pin down that mid-game crash I reported earlier.
I was reading another thread and learned about the -ian trick, so I'll try to pin down that mid-game crash I reported earlier.
Found it. In both years that preceded the crash, the Anglo-Saxons had finished building a Crusade. I switched over to control them, launched the crusade, and the "New Barbarian Invasion" box appeared (cost = 750 solidii, which they can easily afford). As soon as I clicked the accept button (check), the game froze. After reloading I tried it again, this time declining (the "X" button), and the game continued normally. A few other tests showed that it doesn't matter who the opponent is, as it freezes when attacking rebels, West Romans, East Romans, and Huns.
Note to Max: You mentioned having problems with freeze-up in some of your games. If you'd like, now that I'm comfortable with testing in Edit mode, send 'em to me and I can dig into them for you. :book:

:book:
Interesting. I played campaign Disintegration of Empire (or something like this) as West Roman at normal difficulty (I know, hardest is best, but I couldn't survive, once I was quite successful, but after one my victorious battle civilian war started and I ended game, because I wanted to stay with emperor while Aetius didn't, maybe it's because Visigoths are too numerous) and Anglo-Saxons launched Invasion against me and with no CTD. In fact, I have never experienced CTD with your mod. I played as East and West Romans and Romano-British.
I have idea.
Remove strongest ships, some agents (I can't live with Visigoths having Bishop and Carracks). I think, that at least Vandals should use same ships as Romans, because they barely built any, AFAIK they captured Roman ships in Spain.
Also Romans could be able to build something better than Dromon and Galley.
I have idea. Remove strongest ships.........
I am just barely holding off the Barbarian invasions, but what's going to kill me is the "Hun Fleet". That's right. They are churning out 3,3 Caravels, and my 1,1 Galleys are just getting annihilated. If Attila's horde wipes me out on the battlefield, I'll take my whuppin' like a man - but getting blockaded into economic ruin by Attila the Admiral is a bit much!
So I'm with Belisarius - this period is simply too early for the Barbs to be building such uber-ships. At most they should be equal to Rome's.

I went to the downloads page and found the necessary link for this particular mod. I downloaded 24 files and then placed them in the appropriate folders on my HD. Maximus' instructions are pretty clear about where the unzipped files go. Its a little tedious (especially if you don't have DSL or cable internet) but you can get thru it pretty quickly. From start (setting up a fresh clean install of MTW VI v2.01) to finish (downloading all the files and unzipping them in the proper folders) it took me about 30 minutes.
Maximus and your team - this is an awesome mod of MTW. I started playing friday night (07/29/05) and I've been playing it most of the weekend. Great work!!

It wasn't that hard work.
Follow instructions to unpack zip files into some folder. Then pack unpacked files back to one big zip. Download NSIS (install maker, winamp installer is made with it, for example) and install. Run zip2exe and open with it that big zip file, set some settings and click generate. And wait. That's all.

No problem.
BTW, someone declared, that he has made sound set for FoR. Well, my PCs performance doesn't allow creation of bigger installers, but if he's still interested, I could make scripts and give him instructions to make installer with that sound set.
But those sound files must be compressed in ogg (it is better compressor than mp3 after all), because I have console decompressor, which would perfectly fit for this task.
It would be pretty simple to install such mod, as installer would install files and decoder would decode them to wav.

To Max:
I have some ideas.
Area, where Byzantines can train units (and perhaps other nations) are too large. Byzantines had rarely numerical superiority on battlefield (but this didn't prevent them to win lots of battles, that's why I love them). Couldn't you include something like homelands in MedMod?
Or you could make building named Romanisation for Romans (and equivalents for each other nation) which would take long time to build, but its building would allow you to train units in province, reflecting fact, that originally hostile population already subdued to your rule and joins your army. It could be indestructible and perhaps generate some money, and you would start with only few provinces Romanized. This could remove confusion, because I always have troubles to recognise which province is worth upgrading as provinces where Weat Romans can train units are mixed with those where they cannot.
It looks like cool idea, as you cannot immediately train units in newly conquered province, but later you can convert them to follow your rule. Isn't it cool idea? I thing it is.
But provinces where can each unit be trained should be limited still. I can't live with Kataphraktoi trainable in Crimea or Palestine.
Bye.

I have another idea about Romanisation stuff.
It could have more levels. First could be indestructible (meaning, that memories about your presence in province are still alive) and allow creation of some basic units, and second one destructive, this would allow training of best units.
Number of types of units trained in Constantinople should be reduced to some guard units because Constantinoples were ignorant to warfare. Also unit Persian Deserters and Hun Mercenary should be added among Byzantine units.
Varangian Guards should be trainable only in Constantinople. But I'm not sure about them to be in game. I think, that first emperor who used them was Basileios II Bulgaroctonus. It's also weird that they require Spearmakers Guild to be trained. As they were axemen. As axesmith is not present in the game, I suggest Swordsmith Workshop.
I also spotted that Sagitarii require higher level of Archery than Trebizond Archers. Was that intended?
Also bishops and Caravels are still present in v3.0.
With addition of Romanisation-like building (which would take quite a time to "build") it would be good idea to reduce time needed for construction of Keep, Castle ...
Also Trebuchets and mangonels should be removed from the game, as AFAIK they were invented in 14.-15. century.
Well BI will be out soon, so i dont think much people will still be playin this mod once BI comes out.

i'm trying to make "Romanisation" building , but i don't know how to make it indistructible, this is quite difficult to do ... have you any ideas?
anyway in 3.1 there will be two new types of roman military building: the palatine and comitatenses barracks, without them it will be not possible to make military units.
about the other things you have suggested me i think that most of them would be inserted in the game, also i 'll correct some mistake like presence of caravels and mangonels....
cheers

Belisarivs
09-27-2005, 10:19
Perhaps you could look to the MedMod 3.14. There was farmland 40% incestructible. You couldn't sell it. But unfortunately, MedMod 3.14 is no longer downloadable. I have it. I'll look to the building prod file and report to you. But at weekend earliest. But I'm not sure if I'll have time for it because I'll barely show in my home.
Could you have a look at Trebizond archers having lower prerequisites than Sagitarii? It also looks weird, that after construction of Master Bowmaker you can build Bulgarian Brigands. They aren't that good unit and their training in France looks odd.
That Romanisation building could also improve happiness and faith.
Shouldn't be Khazarians Jewish? In game they are Pagan.
About that Comitatus and Palatine. I think that this role (I mean prerequisite for all units) will hold Romanisation and West Romans also have troubles at training Good units. I counted each turn before I could train Auxilia Palatina in each region. Further prerequisities would make West Romans impossible to play.
West Romans could have unit Mercenary Legion with rather bad morale and quite high cost buildable in lots of provinces, but later, when you manage to build Comitatus and Palatine, you may train better (native, non germanized) Legions with lower prices and higher morale...
German tribes perhaps shouldn't be able to build high level buildings. I really dislike when playing like Byzantines, when temporary lack of money slowes down building construction, message like: Visigoths achieved unheard of level of development. As germanic tribes weren't on such level that they could build Citadels or even Fortresses. Unit prerequisites should be modiffied adequally.

That Romanisation building could also improve happiness and faith.
At this moment I am working on a new techtree for PMTW 2.0 so I say:
- you shouldn't make it affect faith, because most likely it will result in making it destructable,
- you shouldn't change the in-game coded name of the original VI structure, because most likely it is hardcoded that the building is impossible to destroy - this way there can be only one such building and Romanisation is a good idea.
BTW - I can't see the self-installer in my boss's computer, so I would be greateful for sending my this in e-mail on cegorach77@o2.pl

I have been playing FoR v3.0 for the past day or two and would like to make a few comments about it:
1) First, it is a brilliant mod and I have been enjoying myself playing as the Romans. The barbs have been coming at me since turn one and I especialy like the idea of using the crusades to initiate barb invasions (nice touch). Clearly, a lot of work has gone into this mod and it shows.
2) I have not read this entire thread and was wondering if the map places will be re-named as to how they appear in the parchments; and if the Roman forces will be getting dedicated (ie Roman-looking) pics for their leaders? This is cosmetic but would really add to the immersion factor.
I have just begun playing this mod and am enjoying it. I am looking forward to v3.1 :)
Also, thanks for the self-install exe - makes it much easier to install.
Cheers!

As an added comment:
I think Max mentioned that he might add an Attila Campaign to the v3.1 release. This would be greatly appreciated :charge:
Also, I think FoR could also be used by some modder to make a Punic War campaign between Carthage and Rome. Now that would be fun to play....

Forget it I was able to download it anyway ~D
I tried with romanisation, but it seems that if it is restricted to any faction it CAN BE DESTROYED :embarassed: still I think I can find a way around this problem.
I believe that by adding destructable building called 'roman administration' unique to roman factions and making it the major requirement for the real romanisation ( in reality 'forest clearing') I can still achive the goal you want to have.
Simply 'roman administration' will take one turn to build and having it will allow building romanisation in the province. 'Roman administration' will be unique to roman faction, but romanisation WILL NOT, so if enemy (non-roman enemy) invasion takes a province it will destroy ( overthrow - because it is restricted to roman factions) roman administration leaving romanisation intact because it is not restricted, but still impossible to build without roman administration anyway.
So it will be more complicated, but still good.
What do you think about it ?
I will try how it works and give you the details on Saturday.
BTW - in case you need my e-mail cegorach@wp.pl is better for now, for some reason I can't access my mailbox on o2, but it is their fault and temporary only problem, I hope.
I think I can help you more, if you want see screenhots in XVI-XVII mod thread in P&M TW sub-forum - I am currently finishing new techtree, so I know one or two thinks which can be useful in your mod.

Problem is, that I'd like to add this "Romanisation" for every faction. Perhaps Barbarian factions could have it common as "Barbatisation" or something like this.
Asterion
10-20-2005, 21:03
or maybe a more neutral word like culturisation, but in the case of barbarian factions it should take loads of time to accomplish, given the invasors were greatly outnumbered by their new "subjects"

I am sorry, but only few building are impossible to destroy. Personally I don't think that barbarisation is a good idea - I believe it was pretty easy to them to move and found a new homeland - besides roman influence was hard to remove.
Culturisation doesn't make sense - this way you would have a building which will be used by everyone, so Barbarians would profit from Roman build 'romanisation' exactly like Rome from their 'barbarisation' because it would be THE SAME building.
Anyway, I have checked and Romanisation works well ( made from Forest Clearing) - see this:
https://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b356/cegorach/ROMANISATION.jpg
As you see even it I conquered the province I can't remove the roman influence, 'roman administration' was overthrown successfully, but Romanisation was not as I planned.
Of course it is only basic modification, so the old icons/pictures/descriptions remain, but I can make it as good as you like or send you the current files - if you wan't to do it on your own. ~:joker:

I intended that each faction will have uniqe Romanisation equivalent. Without it , none military unit will be trained. It mould reflect fact, that every faction had to gain total control over province before being able to raise armies there. So, each faction would have own "building" of such type. BTW, main developer of the mod is Maximus Decimus Meridius, not me. I just spam here.~
EDIT: BTW, I dislike Byzantine Infantry with poor morale. I think, that this is heritage of original MTW, where Byzantine Infantry represented Byzantine army before end of empire as it was only shadow if its former glory and its soldiers really fled the battlefield often. But in your mod it shouldn't be so, as they really were descendants of Roman Legions and were trained with same tactics and were equipped quite equally well I think.

I just downloaded it earlier and played as Eastern Romans. I'm not really familiar with the Roman era so I can't say much but it's definitely interesting to play.
By the way, the names are still messed up. I remember I got a marriage proposal from some weird king (eg. King of Papal States), etc. Well, I assume there's another version coming soon. Anyway, cool mod.

Maximus, I didn't know this mod existed an hour ago but you already have my undying gratitude and I hav't even downloaded it yet! :laugh4: I'm going to download 3.0 now and I guess I'll have to do a second installation since I ~love~ my XL!
I was looking for some images and I couldn't find any. Do you need any picture hosting? I can make some screen captures and host them on my photobucket account for you if you so wish.
I have to admit I didn't read all 22 pages in an hour. I guess I'll find out soon enough and perhaps before you can answer but did you manage to change any of the religions? I know in the shogun MTW mod they weren't able to and every faction had to be catholic. Also, do you have a new camp map? The file is only 17 mgs.
Edit: I want to thank you for your commitement to this, I know its alot of work though perhaps I know not the exact depth of the time and effort. I have done I little bit of modding myself (mostly pidly stuff in the star pos file, hehe)

The mod is pretty cool so far. I've played the west romans in the first age and it is pretty rough for the first few decades but I think I've gotten over the hump and quelled the Barbarians for now. They'll be subdued eventually.
I've also dabbled in the justinian reconquest era with the eastern empire and it should be fun but I havn't played much yet:2thumbsup:
I'd love to help if I could somehow. You probably are pretty near the final copy by now. I wish I had spotted this mod earlier so I could have taken part more. Do you want a map with the Roman names on it? I'm already in the process of cleaning off the names. I'm almost done the land portion.
See here to see what I mean: https://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b173/Calcaneus/example-of-cleaned-map.jpg
Over such a map you could put the actual province names on. The only problem is that I do not have the font the game originally used.
Edit: I finished cleaning off the letters on the land just in case you want to reword the provinces. The ocean words are still there though.

I've almost finished matching the maps with the province names. I've tried it a few times in game and it works I just need to do minor adjustments like making sure no province names overlap borders or are hidden under castles. If you want to consider using the map I'll be all too happy to obligue :D

One of the biggest gripes I've heard from fans of this mod has to do with the map, so PLEASE make it available when you are done. (along with instructions on where to place it) Great Job!
P.S. If you don't here from max, email it to me and I'll upload it to my website and post a download link in this thread.
One other thing that would be REALLY cool, is to swap the portraits from RTW with those used for the Roman factions in this mod. If you could do that, too, it would make this mod even more immersive.

Cool, I'm happy to hear your interested. I was worried that perhaps you had changed some province names. If you do it isn't a big deal. It just takes longer. I used the Font Time's New Roman on caplocks (because lower case letters were implemented in the middle ages) as it sounds the most appropriate. I also Italicized it and boldened it. I'm thinking of downloading a more Roman looking font if I can find it.
For my own purposes when I saw there was only Britania II and no Britania I, I changed it to Britania Minor on the map. I can change this back though. I have some maps of Europe from www.euroatlas.com (just the sample ones) and the west is Britania I consistently and Britania II flips around. Do you want to keep it as Britania II anyways? Maybe it could be called just Britania, BritaniaI, or Britania Minor. I'll make it how you want it though.
I'm mystified what you did with the Pope though.
I thought about maybe putting in the sea names too, like the German and Barbarian Ocean but I don't know if I'll have enough time. My school year will be insane. I'll see what I can do this weekend. I'll put some screens up soon for sure.
Kull: That would probably be cool. I don't have RTW yet sadly.

I don't know how I'll get it to you exactly, probably by zipping it and e-mailing but the zipped file is 30 mg!! That more than doubles the download doesn't it? There is a reason XL has a version with and without a new map. We could go with a lower quality map but I'm trepiditious about it.

Cool. I'm kind of waiting to see what Max wants to do about the Britania II thing. If he wants to keep it the way it is I have to alter it back. If we change it, I might alter it anyways. If we do change it a new province title would have to be done as well as I don't know what. Does anyone want me to send the map as is now anyways?
Edit: I don't know how, but I wrote weighting instead of waiting.
I say post what you've got, and change it later if necessary. It's already 99% more accurate than the one in the game! :)

You can upload a single file as large as 100 MB. And.... it's FREE.
http://rapidshare.de/
NodachiSam
01-18-2006, 17:45
What an awsome website! Free, easy and I don't have to give away personal info:idea2:
Here she is http://rapidshare.de/files/11468205/MapTex2.zip.html
It is 30.4MG (rounded up)
I guess its not needed but you might want to backup your original maptex2 IF your copy of Fall of Rome isn't on a second installation.
When placing the file go to you MTW fall of rome folder (Or whatever you called it) go into the textures folder and then into the campmap folder. The campmap folder is where you unzip it.
You should be asked whether you want to overwrite one file.
Okay, enjoy the map!
Edit: The server will only allow one download at a time so if you can't get it try again later. As well there is a worrysome sentence about a 30mg/hr download rate which I can't figure out but that might sink this download since it is .366mg over that. I might have to find a way to divide the download in two but that complicates things and I'd rather not. Here's hoping!
Please don't take offense, but I took a look at the map, and spotted the following spelling errors (errors in red, corrections in blue):
Map Spelling = Spelling used by Max
Caldonia = Caledonia
Maxima Caeariensis - Maxima Caesariensis
Novogorod = Novgorod
Palestina Salutanis = Palestina Salutaris
Africa Proconsulanis = Africa Proconsularis
Maurentania Tingitania = Mauretania Tingitana
Terraconensis = Tarraconensis
Aquatania I = Aquitania I
Apuilia et Calebria = Apulia et Calabria
Tusica et Umbria = Tuscia et Umbria

Okay, I fixed it up. I don't have time to load it up tonight though. I'll have that tomorrow night.
Its funny, with the Melita text I took care to replace the position of the text as perfectly as I could and I just assumed it worked. Might it be that you looked at the castle from the right but that it was still clear from the left? I changed it anyways. I noticed a lot of stuff like that on the map actually. To my annoyance a lot of names are under troop "spawn locations."

Dam.... I can understand that I missed the one that had two errors but novgorod and osrhoene??? *sigh* I think I know when that happened in my editting and its just sloppiness. An accident to be sure, I fixed it, went on, made mistake and went too far back thus erasing the work done. I've worked with the map longer than I've been able to play the actual mod! lol.
I've fixed and reloaded it.

what if you save that map as jpg at 90% quality. No one will see difference in quality, but size will do down a lot. I believe, that everyone is able to convert jpg back to tga. If not, then I suggest to try Irfan View. It's freeware image viewer and converter.
If you dislike quality loss, try to save it to png. Loseless compression with good compression ratio.

now I'm looking around for my MTW CD's to do another install. Should take from a day to a week.
Wait! If you have an unmodded MTW+VI install, all you have to do is copy that folder (and all subfolders) to a temp location, delete all save games and battle replays, etc., rename to whatever you want, and copy to your final location. Since I'm well-off for HD space, I keep just such a MTW+VI folder permanently in my TEMP folder. Whenever I want to install a new mod, I rename it and copy away!
No such luck. I've got it modded to XL (which is my default) and it looks as though my MTW CD's have met with an untimely end. Just ordered MTW from Amazon. My past exprience with FOR alone makes it worth it. Maybe by the time that they get here 3.1 will be out!
Glad that the modding community's still active with MTW/VI after all this time! RTW/BI just haven't grabbed me the way they have...maybe it has something to do with routing Scythian barbarians shouting "Run for your lives!"/"Head for the hills!" in English (with an American accent).
Thanks though!

Are you talking about instructions for the map installation?
When placing the file go to you MTW fall of rome folder (Or whatever you called it) go into the "textures" folder and then into the "campmap" folder. The campmap folder is where you unzip it.
You should be asked whether you want to overwrite one file.
For the mod itself you want to unzip it into your MTW file. What happened to me was that the zip created a folder inside that folder of the same name. I had to take the stuff inside up one layer and overwrite the files in your main MTW file that you're installing the mod in. I hope this works for you. Enjoy the mod!

I just got my "new" copy of MTW from Amazon! I'm going to do another install (so I can keep XL!). From what you wrote above, if I create an F.O.R. folder, install MTW/VI there and then install the mod to the new MTW foder will that do it?? The "take the stuff inside up one layer" part has me confused (I'm no computer wiz). The map sounds easy.

02-08-2006, 02:04
Awsome!
You can install the game, its addon and the patch once and then copy the entire folder to get a second installation. That's the quick way :D Remember though, the shortcuts everywhere will be for the first installation so you'll want to make a new shortcut to your second folder. Label it appropriately and maybe put it on your desktop.
It doesn't actually matter where you unzip the main mod file. As far as I can remember the file contains a folder called "medieval totalwar" inside are 4 folders and 4 textfiles. Lets say you called your second installation "FallofRome MTW". You want to copy the 8 files inside of "medieval totalwar" and put them into your "FallofRome MTW" folder. You will be asked whether you want to overwrite a whole lot of folders. Once you've overwritten them put the map in its place and you should be ready to go. :2thumbsup:

By this period, the Romans of Rome were spoiled rotten, and no longer willing volunteers for the military. I think you be may able to get Sagitarii, but that's about it.

One of the many enjoyable parts of this mod that I have found, especially as Romans, some territories have to be planned for economy or strategic agents because they will not even field militia. Have to really think through which provence does what.
I have been playing this mod for several months and really do enjoy it but have never got beyond several decades in any one game, so haven't really made it even an entire century with any faction. Keep wanting to try out different factions.
My question is, if I start out in 311 campaign, there are no real horse nomad factions yet. Will they appear or do I have to just plan to play one of the later campaigns where they are already on the field?
Again, great mod for those of us who like to fight defensive battles, playing any Roman faction you get your money's worth.
did the update to this mod ever get released?
i spent ages waiting for what i think was going to be the 3.2 release...........

It's finished up through 3.0 - but Max was going to be releasing a 3.1 bug fix version. Unfortunately he doesn't appear in this thread very often, and it's uncertain whether 3.1 will ever be released. Can someone please post the new map please? i mean the new map itself, without the actual mod(i have that already)?

Hey Max. Anything new?
Excelent map to gp with an excelent mod.
Just 1 thing, Islam has not yet appeared, it will be the 7th century before it appears, so the Arabs should be pagan. And the Sassanids were zoroastrian.
Edit- after playing this map, i noticed that appart from different prov names, it is exactly the same. What does this mpa do?

That's the point. The original map showed the vanilla MTW province names, but recruitment and other text used the period FoR names. The new map simply eliminates that confusion, by showing FoR province names on the map.
Why arent all the units avaliable in a custom battle?

You raise very good points about religion Shaun. I think that it making the Arabs pagan would be logical then. I think I'll change all references to Islam to Zoroastrian then in my own game and make the Arabs pagan. I'd actually prefer another faction in the north east rather than the Arabs as they were not really organized (as far as I can remember) until the time of Islam so they'd probably be better as rebels. On the other hand I don't know if anything in the north east was too organized either but maybe a faction could be around Khaazar or a pre-viking russian faction.

It helps make the mod feel more imersive I think. As well it helps a lot to figure out where the barbarian invasions are going.
The Arabs would be a lot better off as rebels. ATM, they are powerful enough to conquer Africa from the ERE.
Change the Arab faction to Armenia, that will make a very interesting situation for the ERE and Sassanids.

Nice to see you again Max! I'm still waiting for the update too :D If you want... I can convert all the references to Islam in the localization files to the appropriate Zoroastrian (however it is spelt) I did it once already for my own version of the mod. The only thing that I couldn't change where the Muslim titles which stubbornly persisted for reasons beyond my comprehension even though I changed both references to them I could find and had little problem with changing the names of pretty much everything else I encountered with similar methods, including unit names, building names, and pop up help texts. I'd have to do a lot of research on Zoroastrianism.
Regardless, I hope you get that update finished :)

Hi,
Quick question. The only really annoying bug that I've discovered is that the Saiones Royal Cavalrymen (and others that use the same bif) don't animate correctly on the battlefield. Part of the rider, and maybe the top of the horse are all that appears.
1) Has anyone else noticed this?
2) Is there a quick work-around solution for this problem?
guys, where do you download this mod? I can't find it in the downloads section and all the links to rapidshare all say that the file for v3.0 has already been deleted. Can anyone please post a direct link to v3.0? I've been looking for a download for two days now and still can't find one...

Belisarius created an executable version, but it's no longer available (as you know). However, Max's original all-zip file version of FoR 3.0 is still available on the Org downloads page:
http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Mtw_Uploads/MTWupload/bak-jun-2005/Fall_Of_Rome_maximus_decimus_meridius.zip
Max provided installation instructions for the zip file in this post (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=626059&postcount=429). You will want to proceed slowly and carefully with this installation as it is VERY EASY to screw up!
You will also want to download Nodachi Sam's FoR 3.0 map, so go check out this post (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=1043450&postcount=695) for the link.
Good luck, as this is a very enjoyable mod - one of my all-time MTW favorites!
Thanks a lot!
Happy to help! :2thumbsup: I sent a PM to Belisarius explaining that his FoR executable has disappeared from rapidshare. If he can re-upload it, I'll seek permanent hosting for it elsewhere.
He did a nice job on that, and it would be a shame to lose that simple install file.
NOTE: If somebody else out there has downloaded the FoR 3.0 exe file, please upload it to Rapidshare (or any other free hosting service) and post a link for us here. Thanks!
