Hello. :)
I've been a member for a little over a year. I signed up when I got MTW, and have lurked around every once in a while sinse. I'm quite interested in the history Rome: Total War represents, and am still enjoying the game just about everyday.

Hello everyone, i've played M:TW since it was released, and visited these forum for almost as long, never posted though. i live in sweden and is currently conscripted NCO/Telecommunications technician in the swedish army.
i am very excited about R:TW being released, but very very disappointed as i cannot play it, exept that quick and custom battles, it is rather frustrating really. i hope activision answers my mail, but it is seems that they are rather swamped by the amount, as a lot of people experience CTD:s and freezes.
shameless promotion of my post -> http://p223.ezboard.com/fshoguntotalwarfrm30.showMessage?topicID=331.topic
Mod Note: Greetings Cheese Weaver, welcome to the Org ~ some of our members have reported similar "hangs" ; EradoSan (tech guy at TotalWar.com) will likely have some solution for you; but their site is quite busy, and it might take a day or so for him to get to you. In the meantime, I suggest you cross-post that info into our Apothecary forum (if you haven't already). Our guys will have a look, too - and maybe a miracle answer ~D -Kukri

Hi,
I've been lurking here for a few years and decided to sign up properly. I've been very grateful for all the tips and tactics I've gleaned from the postings on this site.
I started out on STW, then moved on to MTW and now RTW. I loved all of them but RTW is frankly a work of art, and I play it obsessively.

Hi all, I just had the demi for MTW and really enjoyed it but never got around to buying because I was too busy with college and politics (very active in Dem party...western civilization has had worse losses than the last election). Anyways, when I was poking aroudn teh TW main site I noticed they have a Hellenic TW version coming out!! Being a history and classics double major at UCSB I couldn't help but be excited. Where can I learn more about this game? When is it coming out, etc? Thanks!
Mod Note: Greetings fellow Californian UCSBclassics ~. Midnight Piper answered your N:TW query below. Guys with double-majors have time for games, LoL? Your academic background wll stand you in good stead with our membership. - Kukri

There is a Hellenic Mod, I think available in the downloads section - not an official product. For an official product you can get Rome:Total War (already in stores) which includes a range of ancient-world civs for your enjoyment (change history, lead Greece in its conquest of Rome). Haven't tried it myself - still enjoying M:TW too much.
*waves*
Been lurking for a while as well after picking M:TW off the shelf 'just to try it out' some time ago. Quickly found it to be the most engaging strategy game I've yet had the pleasure of playing.
Finally got to pick up R:TW the other day (been having a financial crisis for some time so i didnt get it at launch).
Mod Note: Howdy Mazoch, welcome to the Org ~. So all you need is a copy of Shogun:TotalWar to round out your collection. -Kukri

11-19-2004, 02:38
Hi all,
I just decided to buy the game, did it online so I won't get it til Monday. I'll try out the demo until then. I am a little concerned about the MP issues, as I am hoping to get a friend of mine interested so we can play it online. We get together occasionally for some Napoleonic miniature wargames. Some American civil war as well, but mostly Napoleonic. I am interested in this game....atleast until they come out with Napoleon: Total War. ~:)
Mod Note: Welcom "Black Bob" Crauford (can't wait to hear the background on that username:) ) ~ We'll try to keep you entertained/occupied until R:TW arrives at your door. -Kukri

These forums use membership levels (junior member, member, senior member, assistant moderator, moderator) with fewer restrictions as you progress. I can't remember the list of forums available to JMs, but generally it's the 'general discussion' forum for each game.
Post count doesn't matter for membership level progression, what matters is how you behave and the quality/content of your posts. As you prove the worth of your posts - and give the mods evidence that you're not a salesbot or troll - they'll manually 'upgrade' your membership level, giving you fewer posting restrictions, editing capabilities, and more message storage space.

Thanks for the warm welcome. This is a great site, lots of nice information.
As you probably guessed my username is from my favorite General of the British army in the Napoleonic wars. I've enjoyed countless hours of reading about the battles in the Penninsular campaign and Robert Craufurd aka "the Iron Warrior" and "Black Bob" was quite a colorful character. I also enjoy reading about his 95th rifles and Johnny Kincaid. He was so unpredictable, and Wellington used to send him "suggestions" instead of orders lol. He would drive Wellington nuts because he would tell him that he would do one thing, then change his mind and do something totally different. Then there is the famous 41 mile (I believe that is correct) march he made with his light division in 24 hours to try to reach the battlefield at Talavera. They almost made it, but I mean ...wow. Anyway, Ill stop rambling about Napoleonics for now ~;)
I've been playing the demo and find it to be much of what you are all saying. The AI is extremely easy and flawed. If all the Generals are like this, which it sounds like they are, then another flaw. Sounds like every General that is AI controlled is as crazy as Marshal Ney or something. :charge: One thing I kind of liked that I've seen others do not, is the mass... or formations breaking up. Units seemed to become disordered, which made sense to me. And when the battle started to get fierce, it was chaotic and a "mass" instead of all units keeping formations. I kinda liked that. Well, just my first impressions from the demo, itching to get the real thing in a couple days!!

Thanks very much, KukriKhan. I appreciate your offer, but I'm just as happy to get rid of the infernal 1 after my name, and post counts don't matter a whit to me.
If I could possibly beg my way into the tavern, it would be lovely. I'm rather parched after my time in the wilderness.
Again, thanks for your attention. Total War fans the world over are coated in a light batter of fanatacism... they must eat up a lot of your time. My billable hours somewhere else are getting into the millions.

Hi! Nice site! ~
I've been playing computer games since the days of greasy little dwarves vanishing in puffs of smoke. In the past couple of years it's been a mixture of strategy, rpg, and fps games. ATM I'm playing HL2, RTW, and WoW (at least I will, as soon as it arrives).
RTW is my first experience with the Total War series, and I find it very addictive. I've finished my first Imperial campaign as the Scipiones, and am trying out the Seleucids now.
Mod Note: Hi T.N.T.Toulouse, welcome to the Org ~ Some of the best years of my life were spent in Ann Arbor; are you teaching or 'towning' there? Either way, glad to have a broad-based gamer aboard. - Kukri
Hi, i found this site about 2 month ago when looking for info about RTW.
I'm an old MTW player, it's a pity i didn't know of this place earlier. Lots of useful info about MTW...well better late than never.
My name is Thomas, i'm from Sweden and last time i counted i was 29 years old. That was way back in 1992! ~:)
EDIT: It just caught my eye that it says: "Member" below my name. Nice! So i'll take the opportunity to celebrate that by using the edit function. ~D

12-03-2004, 14:14
Hi everyone ~ ,
I'm Barbarossa82, a big fan of all the TW games, occasionally to the detriment of my studies!
I'm a pretty bad general and the troops often look a bit nervous when I'm in command, but I specialise in economic management and political manoevrings with my family and generals. This allows me to live the life of a decadent Eastern faction leader in RTW, relying on my vast wealth to recruit mercenaries to replace the troops I lose on my regular ill-advised forays onto the battlefield!
Favourite RTW faction - Numidia (like the feeling of transitioning from an early, desert people reliant on skirmishers and jav cav to a wealthier, more developed civilisation with Legions and heavy cav)
Favourite RTW unit - Desert Spearmen (far from the best spearmen in the game but seem to be very steadfast, and more importantly they look cool)
Favourite Tactic - use Numidian cavalry to annoy the enemy, then pummel them with archers when they chase us!

I don't usually join game forums, too many flamewars, not enough real analysis, but not so with the Org. So I figure it's time to contribute, even if it's only my 2 cents. Medieval filled the combat gaming urges I've had since Mindcraft's Walls of Rome (looong time ago), and added the addictive "one more turn" aspect of the strategy game. Killer combination, and Rome has the potential to waste even more of my time...

Hello everyone. My real name is Richard and I live in the Bay Area in California. I am close to being 18 years old and, when I hear the good news from one of the colleges, I will probably spend a great deal of time celebrating by playing TW games. I've played STW and MTW and am a big fan of both. I just realized, looking at my screen name, that I am logged in as Master Zen, which sounds a little pretentious. I apologize; it's a nickname I earned in school. People call me "Zen Master" so I just reversed it. Also, master is used in Britain to get the attention of young men so I thought it was appropriate since I am a young man. Finally, being a Zen Master is something many of us aspire to, so it is also used in that sense. There is certainly something Zen in strategy: the mix of orthodox and unorthodox. By the way, I am also a major history buff, which is one of the reasons the TW series attracted me. I have been skimming these forums for weeks now, just reading, and today I finally decided to join. Hopefully the homework load will reduce and I will have more time to post, to read, and to play.

Hello, everyone. Like many, I've been reading these forums and using their guides since the Shogun days. I thought I would finally join up. I can only say that the guides and posts in this forum have been incredibly useful for me over the years.
Hey,
Also been a lurker for awhile, through the shogun and medeival days. Finaly decided to stop being lazy and sign up.
Hi hi all y'all:
I'm a big fan of the TW series but possibly one of the worstest ever players :/
Thank y'all that made the guides and such, now I can sometimes manage to not get over-run before at least grabbing a new town or few.

hello everyone. i've been lurking here since i've been addicted to MTW and registered just recently to get a better kick at RTW. the topics and discussions have been more than helpful. great site. great people. been asking for help here for a couple of times, support never fails. thanx everyone
I've been playing tw games since i got medieval about 6 months ago. I'm a bit of an all rounder (in rtw), and my motto is, 'stuff diplomacy, kill them all'
Howdy, y'all. I'm fairly new to RTS games and thought I'd give MTW a try. It was an excellent choice, if I do say so myself. I've been lurkin' 'round these here parts for a time and thought I'd finally register. Lotsa good info here.
Oh, yeah. Can someone tell an ol' country hick how to subscribe to a thread without having to post to it...?

Hi everyone,
I am, like my name says, a girl (!), and am a student on the Classical Archaeology and Ancient History Department of Stockholm University, Sweden. Next year I will be writing a paper about hoplites on red-figure Attic vases. I am new to RTW, and have never played any of the earlier TW games. However, being an avid "Age of" series player I have the micromanagement skills required to be successful and loved by the Senate and the people of Rome itself. :)
PS in warnings it has given me 1 minor and 2 major and this is my 1st post.

Hi all :)
I'm also from the Netherlands. After years of playing Civilization 3 I found a new toy: Rome - Total War. I have played Shogun and Medieval as well, but I find RTW to be more addictive.
I've been lurking here for a few months now and, as others, saw my game improve a lot by just reading all the tips. I'm now at a point that I rather ask the questions than do a search on the topics. Guess I made the jump from 'total newbie' to just 'newbie'.

I'm a 19,66 year old university student from Finland, currently majoring in English, but seriously considering history, philosophy, ethnology/folkloristics, latin and a crapload of other stuff. I registered here because I wanted to give feedback to the Blue Lotus mod (awesome stuff, check it out) and figured I might as well post all around the place.
I got absolutely obsessed with the Total War series after buying Medieval and have since bought all three games. The TW series really got me interested in history and I've been reading loads of it lately, I recommend this, (http://www.roman-empire.net/army/army.html) this (http://xenohistorian.faithweb.com/index.html) and this (http://www.staff.ncl.ac.uk/nikolas.lloyd/weapons/weapons.html) site for people who don't know all that much about their history and want to learn more. I was skeptical about the second site, since the guy who maintains it is a bit of a bible-nut, but most of the stuff that doesn't concern things mentioned in the Bible and Christian/Muslim conflicts is pretty good as far as I can tell.
Errr... I suppose 'tis it. If anybody is interested in what I look like, my profile has a link to a Finnish IRC-gallery with a bunch of pictures of me. At least people who know me find them mostly amusing.

Hello and welcome Arkatsson ~
~:) I started playing total war games ages ago when shogun first came out, i loved this game but unfortunatly my PC at the time couldnt run it properly which forced me to stop playing it. When MTW came out my friend showed it to me and i knew i would love playing it. From then on i used to sit down for hours playing it, i completed it to the extream with every nation! now i am currently playing RTW and finding some of the new feature really good like the new campain map. But it doesnt seem to be as enjoyable as MTW. I looked on the forums for the first time yesterday and discovered there were mods out and mods being created for the bronze age. This instantly interested me.
I think what you guys are doing is great. I am looking forward to playing HTW tonight for the first time and also NTW with the new RTW graphics wehen it is completed. Thanks for makeing the TW games even better :)

Hello Sevengoals ~
Welcome to the Org
Hello. I've only started playing the Total War series since about 2 years ago, but I've always liked games that stressed battlefield tactics for as long as I can remember. I think the first such game that got me hooked into this particular style of battle was something called Waterloo (not sure of the exact title), which had Napoleonic-era warfare. The incredibly detailed battlefields, hundreds of soldiers arranged in formations, and using cannons to reduce those formations... It really inspired in me the feel of a 'real' battle. Games that have more abstract warfare such as the -Craft games by Blizzard never held my interest for long. I am always thrilled at the prospect of defeating great odds through clever use of terrain and manouvering.

Like Aggie at the top of page 5 on this thread, Ive spent the past 3 years playing Civ3, however, where he spent his time playing in a highly educational and entertaining series of Succesion Games, I spent my 3 years playing in the very mechanical and some would say boring civfanatics Hall of Fame. Respect to Aggie, he is a god of Civ3 SG's.
Alas, its time for me to retire from Civ3 and move onto the new...
Im completely new to the Total War series, and cant wait to spend the next 3 years learning the game to the same depth as I learnt Civ3 :book:

RTW MP doesnt have the same feel at all and Ive only played there less than 5 times, too many abusive spammers and without an ignore button it pretty much makes the experience lame. Aside from that - I like RTW enough for it to take half my life away atm.
So ello all. :)

Hi All,
Always been more of a lurker than a poster but still, here goes. I've been gaming since way-back-when: Darklands, X-COM, CIV, Colonization, BG1+2, IWD1+2, NWN, CoD etc, as well as all the Total War games. Now totally addicted to RTW.
It's good to see such an informative and well administered site, which seems to have a good atmosphere as well! (Which is why I stopped lurking and figured I'd show some support.)
Take care all...

Well here goes, I am AggonyKing, previously known as IPainI_King, but I have succesfully achieved the tittle of Aggony. I been playing TW games eversince they came out, but due to my 56k, I never got into MP in Shogun, but I did in MTW, and RTW one day. I plan to go back to shoggy and play mp, so I'll be cheking out Tosas fake server instructions. Anyway that's me, and for some reason I cannot see any smilies :( to the right of the reply window
Hi, i have only just found this site, and was intested to see such a dedicated and active group of total war series players...
I have been playing total war for ages, single player on shogun, and then MP on mtw and sadly, due to having a less than good comp. i am yet to start rtw.

One more new member to the forums. I've been browsing for awhile, and thought I finally ought to join up. First time joining any forum, actually.
Currently a sophomore in college, planning on a degree in medieval history as that's always been my passion. Past experience with RTS games like Warcraft & Age of Empires, but in 2002 I got ahold of the demo for MTW and was amazed by the realism of the combat. Unfortunately, circumstances prevented me from going any further until October 2004, but I finally got my fix. It was a hard learning curve at first, as I didn't have the manual, but I got a lot of help from the forums, and hopefully now I may even be able to contribute something. Thanks to all.

Greetings everyone,
Guess I better introduce myself, I've already derived a great deal of benefit from these forums.
I am a 46 year old, divorced, father of two (son 16, daughter 13). I love all kinds of games, card, board, rpg etc (played D&D when it first came out nearly 30 years ago lol).
I play a lot of PC and video games with my son (he's much better than me at the video games ~sigh~ I taught him everything I know when he was growing up and what does he do to repay me?? LOL)
Besides RPGS and such (2 everquest accounts) I love strategy and tactics. MTW has quickly sucked up most of my spare time *grin*
I am currently playing the initial release of MTW - and my first game. I started with the danish on normal. Been using save games a lot - trying different things and seeing how stuff works (tried killing the pope once...)
I just purchase the battle collection. As soon as I finish this game I will install it.
I've learned a great deal just by reading these boards - thank you all for the cumulative/collective knowledge you have shared.
So far I have been really amazed at this community - I've played lots of different games and used forums and newsgroups etc over the years - and so far this bunch of people is one of the best I have met. Thank you for letting me be a part of it - I will contribute what I can

Greetings everyoneWelcome on board, Deus Ex! I see we have certain experiences in common. My two boys are 9 and 7 years of age, and the oldest is already a threat to me at various games. The little fascist is going to have his college funding plan scrapped if he goes on like this... :sneaky:
I also played D&D thirty years ago - as a game leader I drew maps and pictures and made sure everybody had a good time. It seems I wasn't too bad an AI for most players. My version of D&D was originally German however, and the instructions had been very badly translated into Dutch. We had a great time elaborating on the worst mistakes in the text.
Thank you for letting me be a part of it - I will contribute what I can.I'm sure you will. Try to make some longer posts on strategy and tactics, try to help some n00bs, stay out of the rare flames we have here (that shouldn't be too hard for a genuine adult like you) and you will be promoted to full membership soon enough.
See you on the boards!

Hi! I have really enjoyed the board plus all of the great post on it. Picked up RTW in December, and have been learning ever since. Very, Very Addicting.
So far I have done upgrades to my pc which include a sound + video card. SB 24Bit and Powercolor 9250(256MB) via nvidia FX5500(128MB). I've been bit and bit hard.
Anyway, hope I can contribute to questions members might have. I saw my first earthquake this last weekend. 123BC.

Hi everyone,
I started out playing Civ2, then MTW and loved it so much I bought RTW on the day it was released. I am just staring to play on vh/vh settings and hope it proves to be just that, very hard! My first computer was an Atari video console (the one with no keys and a strip of plastic wood on the front) and I’v been hooked on games since then.
My knowledge of history is patchy to say the least, I have no idea how these Mods work and my computer is so slow that I dare not venture to play a Multiplayer game, I think that I stand to learn a lot from this site!

Welcome Codnchips ~ (love the name). You'll fit right in here, with that background. Mods are still a mystery to me as well. (Note: I highly admire the guys who do the mods). I can honestly say that the Multiplayer experience makes the TW games a whole 'nuther animal.

Hi! Read one of the first post and decided to get out in the light ~;)
I'm a 27y French and Canadian (not French-Canadian ~D ) who's having ton of funs with MTW and MTW:VI. In fact, one of my friend bought the 1st one and I never was able to find it in order to give it back to him *grin*
I love FPS and Statregy games, and I'm about to try out some mods for MTW, I'm sure I won't be disappointed ~:)
I'd like to say a big thank you to all the mod and members of thes boards, for they are one of the best I've seen in some years ~:grouphug: . Also,a special mention to the dedicated people who've put together the different guides, especially lady Frostbeasteggs, who's done a terrific job.
That's all for now ... I'll try to post more often... I'm too comfortable in shadows for my own good ~;)

Bienvenu Repone! Try to keep your promise and post more often, if only to help newcomers who need a hand getting started. Have you tried S:TW yet? It's the oldest of TW games, but thanks to its landcapes, weather, and general atmosphere it's in a category all of its own.
Enjoy now! :charge:
Thank you Adrian
I'll get my hands on a copy sometime soon ... when I'll have a bit more free time than now (probalby try RTW also, just for the sake of it .... so much fun to have, so little time :dizzy2: )
BTW love the spell check .. nice tool for poor lonely strangers like me ~:)

What does Repone stand for? I call myself AdrianII for a reason. Adrianus II was a nice, considerate man, a transitional Pope who in the midst of enormous trouble managed to do some good for the Church and mankind, and even to further the work of Cyrillus and Methodius. I rather like the idea of having a Pope for an adopted name on this board, since the Pope in the game is without a doubt the most hated figure of all.
Be sure to buy S:TW whenever you can. It costs a mere 5 bucks these days so if you're disappointed it's hardly a rip-off. This board started soon after Shogun Total War came out, and initially the etiquette in the forums was very much in style: polite, considerate and respectful. We hope to maintain thattradition; there are enough boards out there where people can flame to their heart's content. Instead of calling each other Honourable like the Japanese samurai of old used to do, M:TW adepts might call each other Venerable in true Medieval style.
So, Venerable Repone, tell us the meaning of your name if you wish. :knight:

So, Venerable Repone, tell us the meaning of your name if you wish. :knight:
Well Venerable AdrianII (sorry for last time, I'm a lazy typist on-line ~D ), my name is not so peaceful, but it is still a tribute to some great men betrayed, in a way at least, by their own country. RepOne stands for 1er REP, 1er Regiment Etranger Parachutiste. It was an elite regiment of the Foreign Legion . Based on what was left of the BEPs (Bataillon Etranger Parachutiste)after the war of Indochine. It incorporated the best soldiers of the Legion, profesionnals amongst professionals - was the single most decorated regiment in his short years of existence, I think) and was used to plug the gaps or hold in check difficult and rebellious regions of Algeria. The regiment, based in the city of Sidi-Bel-Abbes (the home of the Foreign Legion at the time), was disbanded by De Gaulle in 1962, never to be mentioned again, after a failed putch by some of his officers named the revolt of the centurions (again, tribute to the history of the Roman Legion here). I won't talk about politics here (verboten if I'm not mistaken ~;) ) nor the reasons why I feel they deserved a tribute, at least not in public. pm me if you want. To finish the short history lesson, I've used this nickname before I even played on-line in chatrooms.
Hope I summarized it well ~:)
sorry forgot something... 1er = first in abreviated French (used a lot for for military units : 2e = second, etc, etc)
Adrian II
03-01-2005, 11:26
Hope I summarized it well ~:)So you did, Venerable Repone. I am quite familiar with France's années moins glorieuses in the late 1950's and early 1960's and I can imagine why you feel attached to that regiment even though I may not share some of your views or experiences. This board is about games, not politics, and you are a wise man to separate the two. Good to have you on board.
Enjoy! :charge:

Ore-wa Irinami da!
I'm Irinami here, there, and everywhere. I'm primarily a hex-wargamer, but I grabbed Shogun off a bargain bin the other week. While I'm not juiced about the political presentation of it (What, only 5 daimyo recognized? ~ ) I love the game despite that.
Nope, I'm not Japanese. I've picked up some of the language from my Little Lady's friends and exchange students. I chose the name because it was similar to an electronic musician I used to like, but different enough to be unique. "Irinami" means "incoming wave," which brings some very nice mental images to mind. (It could also technically mean "entering Poland," which means I always play a Wermacht general named Irinami in WWII games. ~D )

I'm Someone Stupid (boy doesn't that sound great :) ) currently playing R:TW. Must say I'm pleasantly surprised by the game. I'm a former med student back in college (again - though back as an undergrad - no responsibilities there) from New Orleans and have worked in New York in architecture. As with someone above me I used to be a computer tech and still keep up with it for overclocking's sake. Hello Spartan117300, welcome to the Org!~
You get more avatar selections when you are moved up to Member, which will happen soon, if you keep posting here (not just the Entrance Hall - everywhere here). We're glad you've joined us, and hope you enjoy your stay.
Hey there fellow Spartans/Samurai/Holy Warriors. I'm new-ish. Close enough, love the TW series, and I love you guys too! Cheers! ~
Hi I haven't introduced myself yet as you all know my Name is Age and for the most part that is my StarFleet Command gaming Name.I used it becuase it is simple on the boards I am on.I got this game becuase of the histroical epic battles and the way the world was back then as well as being part Norse.I got MTWVI and I am enjoy it right now only in single player as I still have to learn the basic before going MP but I will.I hope I can count on your help and guidance once in awhile. Thanks and I am glad to be a part of your community.
