Booo, Gold and Silver were great, the ones after were tedious!
Were they your first pokemon games, by any chance?
I suspect that the series formula means that the one you play first is always the best. All others annoy you with the things they change, and the things they do not. I mean, how many times do I haver to get all the gym badges? I've already won master rank. Why not build on that? Why do I have to unlock the same abilites each time? Why should I be happy that my new electric pokemon a lame looking cat thing instead of a pikachu? Why is this pokemon a different type to what it was originally? It's death by papercuts.

Nah, red was my first. I liked the improved interface and graphics, so maybe I'm just shallow. Red is a very close second behind gold for me, so it's not like I don't appreciate the originals. Also Gold/Silver has Heracross, my favorite Pokemon. So I'm definitely shallow. :P

Red and blue was my first, I still haven't beaten Soul Silver.
I enjoy all the games, but not diamond and pearl for some reason...
Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimmoire of the Rift, for my DS is fun too, been playing it for a while :o

original Red, Blue, Yellow on GBC were my first. loved gold and silver, ever since they overcomplicate things, undercomplicate things, and take things that should be left, and leave things that should be taken.

Blue and Yellow were my first two followed by Platinum and SoulSilver. Eagerly awaiting the new ones. I do have to agree that most people will always have at least a soft spot for their original games and that is just because the series will always capitalise on one huge aspect of life - nostalgia. No pokemon will ever live up to the original 151 and the further the series goes away from that the worse it will seem.

Playing Cleopatra (Pharaoh's expansion). I like the new tombs I can build :D. Can't wait to play Cleopatra's campaign.
I am playing the following on and off:
Medieval II: Early campaign was fun but now turning into a siege fest and getting boring fast...
ArmA: Fun, kept buying the farm so I dumbed down the AI to a vegetative state and am faring much better...
The Tudors: A puzzle game based on a Showtime series I never heard of :P Fun nonetheless
Deus Ex: Replaying this old gem, JC Denton is still the coolest...
Others sporatically that I will not mention at the moment...
Want to buy some second hand Thief 3 and Police Quest Pack too, just haven't yet...

After over 20 hours of gameplay, I finally beat ME1 on normal (I was a paragon wimp). It was such a great playthrough, I cant wait to start ME2 with my imported character!
So here are my pros and cons about ME1:
Pros:
The combat
Even though most people think of it as inferior to ME2, I disagree. While its not as fluid as the combat in ME2, the combat is much more dynamic than in ME2, where cover is an absolute must. Dont get me wrong, I still love the ME2 combat system, I just enjoyed fighting in ME1 more.
The story
Well, duh. When I beat the game I felt like I had acheived something big. I felt the same way when I beat ME2, but moreso with ME1, after a really hard boss fight in ME1 that ME2 lacks.
The Citadel
I loved walking around the different areas like the Presidium and the markets. This was something that ME2 lacked, unfortunately. But at least there are more stores in ME2 to shop from.
The upgrade/inventory system
A lot of people hated it; at first, I did as well, but after a bit I began to like it: being able to customize your weapon to suit the needs of the mission was great.
The amount of side missions
While many of them took place in repetative combat enviroments (why is every freighter and bunker in the game have the exact same layout?), but the fun Mako driving (gotta love driving up 90 degree slopes!) sort of made up for it. But at least there were more of them than in ME2.
NPC interaction
I liked how there were many people you could talk to in the game (Conrad Verner FTW) and it gave the game a real sense of immersion. Not that you dont have this in ME2, I just liked it in ME1 as well.
No annoying bypassing
I personally hated the bypassing mini games in ME2. There were so many of them that it really annoyed me. Maybe just to get into safes or such, but it seemed like they were everywhere in ME2. At least in ME1 the decryption minigame was fun, quick, and if you failed you could just use omni-gel to break in.
The Mako
I now know what it feels like to drive while high!
Hard choices
I wont spoil anything, but I liked how you had to make really tough decisions at various points in the game. ME2 had some, but nowhere near the magnitude of the decisions in ME1.
There's probably more, but Im blanking out right now.
Cons
Lack of weapon variety
There were only two models of each kind of weapon, but many different versions (nothing like going from level I to VIII in assault rifles and seeing the glaring difference in them), and sometimes it was pretty confusing. And no different colors does not make up for the lack of variety in weapon models.
Unskippable cut-scenes
The cut scene for landing/pulling away from the Citadel was unbearably tedious to watch everytime you land/depart from the Cityadel. At least in ME2 you could skip them.
No sprinting in no-combat zones
This I found annoying because oftentimes an NPC I have to talk to/do a mission for will send me different places across the Citadel. Jogging there is very tedious, in my opinion. A sprinting option would have been nice. On the topic of distance, I thought it was incredibly annoying that some missions sent you from the landing bay to the presidium, then back to the landing bay only to talk to one guy who sends you on your way after a 30-second dialogue.
Elevators
Mostly I dont mind them, but some of them, the longer ones usually, really bugged me. I mean, it took so :daisy: long to get down to the C-sec offices that after a dozen or so times I began to avoid the Citadel to avoid the long elevators. Yes I know Im impatient. But at least Wrex's lines in the elevators were hilarious.
Confusing levels
I did not like how there was no pointer towards your objective. Sometimes I would get lost trying to find the elevator to my objective. But once I was on the same level as the objective I was fine, but still...
Repetitive level design
I mentioned this earlier- I did not like how every cargo ship and bunker was exactly alike.
Confusing controls
For my first few hours playing the game, I was very confused about the controls. I didnt know how to apply medi-gel or melee (turns out that the game does it for you) and I did not know why my grenades werent exploding until very recently. A tutorial would have been nice.
Lack of character depth
ME2's characters had depth to them with their own backgrounds that were wonderfully complicated in some cases. While there was some character development in ME1, it was pretty shallow. I would have loved to know more about Kaiden, Tali, Wrex, or Garrus, but I didnt get much.
Summary
I loved this game, even for its flaws. The Mass Effect gams are my favorite, and will most likely remain so. I hope anyone reading this who has not bought ME1 already goes out and buy it ASAP!
That kind of worries me. I too love the combat in ME1 and I'm worried I wont like it as much in ME2 when I get there.

I appreciate that the elevators add a sense of size to structures and allow for some color via news snippets or NPC conversations, but why not have the things move quicker?

Yes I did notice the rapid transit but even so, the rapid transit didnt take you everywhere- you still had to walk many places.
Also, towards the end you see the elevator that Shepard is going in going super fast- I dont see why that couldnt be the case for the longer elevator rides. For the shorter ones I dont care how fast they are, just the longer ones bug me.
This is intriguing. Did you remember to talk to your teammates on the Normandy between missions? I thought they had rather a lot to say about their backgrounds. Is it that ME2 has so much more or that you just missed some of the content?
Yes I talked to everyone after every mission, nothing satisfactory to say, especially Garrus- after his little personal mission he was pretty dull.

So you got Kaiden's story about being abused at biotic training, Ashley's stories about her sister and how her family name is tainted due to her grandfather and so on?
Wrex, I thought, was particularly blabby recounting several of his mercenary missions and how he came to be exiled from the Krogan homeworld and lost his ancestral armor. I don't think Tali was quite as chatty, but she still went on at some length about her life on the flotilla and her pilgrimmage....

Spoilers in above posts?
I've been playing a lot of Dragon Age. Probably unhealthy amounts. This is the first game in a long time (Probably since Civ IV) where I have found Normal difficulty to be a real challenge. Maybe because I don't play a lot of pure RPGs, but I know for a fact I'm not the only one who seems to blunder through this at times.

Just finished Far Cry 2, amazing game I would recommend to anyone. I got it for like $10 because a Game Rental store was closign and selling off all their games, definitely worth it.
(I know I copied Hooahguy, bite me)
Pros
Amazing A.I.
The A.I. in this game is...unmatched. It seems very realistic (apart, of course, from glitches), and will behave as you would expect an inexperienced militia soldier to behave. If they spot you, and you get out of their sight and move to a different piece of cover without them seeing you, they won't instantly telepathically know you are there; they will come up and search your last known position, at least until you open fire or are spotted again. The way they spot you is pretty realistic as well, and hiding in the grass of the savanah means you are usually very difficult to spot. Add to this the silenced Dart Sniper, and you can snipe and scope out most enemy positions. They also will give up the chase after some time, and an often-used tactic by myself when being chased over bridges is to park my truck sideways on the bridge, and light it on fire. The enemy will be forced to get out of their car's to follow, but stay away from fire as they well should.
Extremely Open World
Speaks for itself, if you see a location, you can almost certainly get to it one way or another. With 50 Sq Kilometers of world that you can explore openly, you can see many different environments. Lagoons, Deserts, Savannahs, Jungles, and all fairly realistic as well. Huge amount of land and water to explore to your hearts content.
Large Weapon Variety
From silenced Sniper Rifles, Grenade Launchers, IED's, and Machine Guns, to Assault Rifles, SMG's, and Pyrotechnics *>:)*, there are many, many weapons to choose from, and even more ways to use them. For example, the AK is great for power and putting bullets into the enemy, but the accuracy isn't that great, while the AR-15 is a less powerful, very accurate gun with burst-mode, and the MP5 is a silenced, low damage weapon with medium accuracy. There is a weapon for every situation, and they usually can fit into many niches (I used an AK as a medium/close range gun for a really long time, bursting for longer range, and the Snipers can perform well at medium range as well).
Great Combat System
The Combat is great. It feels very real, as you sprint from enemy fire, slide behind cover, and unjam your gun. The only times I ever truly disliked the actual combat system was when I shoot a few magazines and my gun starts to jam repeatedly, and when the enemies spam rockets/grenades. Once had an enemy spamming grenades from a grenade launcher turret at me (one of the very few I've seen in the game), and took me 4 tries to even find him, and another to kill him. But the system still feels very realistic, but somehow fun at the same time.
Storyline
The over-arching story is pretty good, though it becomes obscured by endless, usually monotonous and repetitive missions from the warring factions. In fact, up until about 40-50% through, it seems like the game isn't going anywhere. Then all of a sudden BOOM! every few missions the plot gets thicker. It also isn't read to you from the characters, like some games do "Oh hi, so the reason we did this was....so that we could....and now you're gonna help us". It really unfolded, like a flower, rather than just all being on one big piece of paper that you read all at once.
Cons
Constant Fighting
Many times, you will just be driving, and some random jeep will follow you and shoot at you. This is fun at first, but when it happens every 5 minutes, it starts to piss you off. The fact that everybody tries to kill you as soon as they see you is ridiculous, and means that you cant drive from point A to point B without crossing at least 2 or 3 different groups of enemies.
Buddies are Retarded
The Buddy's are great for helping you out, adding spice to a mission, or simply for immersion. However, I can't tell you how many times I've thought that everything was fine, and then for no reason my buddy dies and I'm not there to save them, so they're gone forever.
Vehicle Physics Engine
Many a time have I just been cruising around in my car/jeep/truck/dune buggy, and randomly hit some rock in the exact location that the vehicle no longer moves. This often happens with unrealistically small or large objects, which should either have stopped the car from going forward before it could get stuck, or simply not have effected it in the first place.
Thats all I care to post right now, maybe more later.
Believe it or not, that (ME1 has poor characterization) is something i've heard quite often from friends. Mainly from those who have played Dragon Age or ME2 before playing ME1. The first Mass Effect had a relatively straight-forward approach, aside from Wrex, Garrus and Tali (if you found hers, it was a bit off the beaten path) no one had much in the way of companion quests. Most characterization is accomplished through interactions with Shepard during events (Wrex: If I die in here, i'll kill him!) or after mission debriefs.
Companion quests on the other hand are a way for characters to really stand out in western RPGs, great examples of which are Zaeed's Revenge , Shale's quest for identity, Morrigan's search for her mother's book, ect. They open the character to new circumstances and you see development beyond simple conversation. As was once said: A little less conversation, a little more action. ~D

Speaking of which, I thought a number of ME2 missions really elaborated on character: the missions for Samara, Jack, Mordin, Thane, Garrus, Miranda, Zaeed (as you mentioned), Tali and to an extent Jacob all had loyalty missions that touched on who that person was. Kasumi's and Grunt's missions were more "help me with this and I will be loyal" than it was "help me get through a situation in my life that is tearing me apart (such as Garrus, Thane, and Samara) and then I will be loyal.
And the Overlord DLC was amazing, even the 2nd playthough- not trying to spoil anything but I think it had the most emotional ending that I have ever seen, that :daisy: messed me up for a few days it was so powerful.

Just finished Alien Breed : Assault on PC. I'm kind of torn about this one. It's basically a fun game, but what with all this running back and forth to open doors and activate computers?
This would have been okay in 1995, but in 2010, it's kind of boring. And games that take 5 hours to complete shouldn't exist. Even for 15€ it's a rip off.

But personally, I didn't really think anything special of Dragon Age's character development.... but then again I thought DA was kind of a paint-by-numbers fantasy RPG, so maybe it's just me

Gonna play some FireRed and Starfox Command while driving up to Canada (as a passenger, of course :P). The former is great of course, but the latter is tough, mostly because of using the stylus for controls and the kind of punishing time limits for missions. Good thing I got it for like $8 used.

Just played thye Mafia II Demo:
I was awesome. good combat system, cover system, but it has its faults.
1. Driving is horrible. maybe back then the cars were bad, but not that bad, plus its post-WWII. going over 40MPH means you skid for 20 seconds every time you turn.
2. the cops will ram your car for no good reason. Like ramming my car is some nation-wide contest with a million dollar prize...
3. because of the horrible driving, crashing into people is common, and you have to pay/fight to get out of it. bull****
but overall its a good demo, probly gonna buy the game.
I just finished Mass Effect with my "Renegade" Infiltrator. I let the council eat it and put Capt. Andersen forward as a replacement. 32 hours, and maxxed out at level 50. :2thumbsup:
Character-wise, I wasn't sure if I'd let the council die or not, but when it was presented as a choice between hitting Sovereign with everything or risking ships to save the Ascension, it was a no-brainer.
Being an Infiltrator, the sniper rifle was my weapon of choice, and I used it almost exclusively. One shot, one kill. :skull:
I think I'll take a look at ME2 now, but I'm also tempted to run through with a "Paragon" Adept. Adepts seem like a lot of fun to play. And since I unlocked the Assault Rifle achievement already, I could give him a decent weapon too.

Batman: Arkham Asylum.
Awesome game, though it gets a bit repetitive:
get on a gargoyle, string a guy up, silent kill other guys, and glide kick a few as well. repeat. continually.
but its also sprinkled with some straight-up awesome fighting, and if you dont think that the slow-mo scenes or most of the fist fighting in general is awesome, there may be something seriously wrong with you.

Yes. Massive game. Simply massive. It's got lots of love it or hate it features and a few flaws; if you like a sprawling JRPG with real time combat and loads of optional content then it's definitely worth a look.
Dragon Quest VIII is by far my favourite Factor 5 game though. Also my favourite JRPG.

After seeing footage, I thought that he knocks them out at least? Maybe he does kill them? He uses some sort of thermal scanner and after bad guys are taken out they go off the scanner, obviously indicating that they are dead, not knocked out.

I didn't take it that way.I figured i better explain since i don't know what the average age of the posters here are.
Loot is random as far as i remember, and scaleable with your level, but you should still be able to find picks and torches.
If i remember containers respawn either every 3-7 ingame days.So you could go around rechecking areas if your having a hard time finding them.Though i also seem to recall that you are more likely to find those items in dungeon containers but i could be wrong.
That is also the reason that you don't want to drop any of your stuff off in containers that are not in a house you own,FYI.
Some shops carry them too and they should be pretty cheap.I think there is some kind of outfitters store in the market district of the imperial city you could check out and in a couple other cities. Its been a while since i played so sorry for being vague.
I didn't take it that way.I figured i better explain since i don't know what the average age of the posters here are.
I am glad to hear it. Don't worry, I am quite mature! ;)

I didn't know this! I did notice as I played last night however, that as I went thru the containers in a fighters guild I found alot of good stuff. I got killed, and had to do it over again and all the stuff was different! Much to my dismay, not as good! Respawning would be great! I found a great mace the first time and a mediocre axe the next.

None in the city I am currently in. To the east of the Imperial City. I haven't been anywhere else yet so I will check it out! Thanks for the tips! :)

After seeing footage, I thought that he knocks them out at least? Maybe he does kill them? He uses some sort of thermal scanner and after bad guys are taken out they go off the scanner, obviously indicating that they are dead, not knocked out.
Not a thermal scanner, not that I've seen at least. its some sort of scanner thing that makes people blue, red if armed. and i dont think people go off the scanner when you beat them up. plus you can see them rolling around after you beat them.
I would gess at least some of them probably died eventually, but not immediately. and thats all that matters.

Mafia 2 demo, this game is fun as heck...
but the driving @.@
Back in October of last year i bought a $10 logitech gamepad to play Street Fighter 4 on my PC with. Aside from a strange design that sorta made my hand hurt after hours playing with it, it was a really good piece of hardware. Since i never really liked the way the keyboard controlled, and an old 360 controller just felt a little off, the classic d-pad of the logitech gamepad was an incredible fit. Sadly, the poor thing died after nearly a year of consistent use. Really down since I loved playing fighters with that thing, was the only way I could play it competently :laugh4:
Thinking about investing back into a 360 now that my fighting itch has been left unattended, but in the meantime i'm playing Victoria 2 on and off, Starcraft 2 and a tooling about in some of the expansions for Sims 3.

duuuude.....PS3 is the way to go man. I've had to have my 360 fixed 3 times in the past 3 years, the PS3 I've had 4 years and the only time I ever needed repairs was a few months back, and that was because of a long weekend playing basically from 10AM til 4-6AM every day with my friend, without turning it off except for that 4 hour cooldown while I slept, and there was little ventilation as well.
PS3 costs money to fix to send it back to sony, but its such a rare thing to happen (RRoD is by far the more encountered error, the YLoD is very rare to get, and odds are that you won't ever get it. my friend has his just as long, and he plays even more than I do, and he still hasnt had a problem.

just beat Arkham Asylum. Cool game overall, for the price, I would reccomend anybody to buy it. But it is geared more towards batman fans and action fans, but aren't we all one or both of those deep inside?
ending was sorta anti-climactic. basically just beat up some henchmen, pull the Joker down, hit him thrice in the face, then repeat 3 times. ending vids were still epic though.
Started a new character with Demon's Souls I am tired of getting slapped around, is it even possible to beat this game as a magic heavy character, everything completely tears you apart with a single hit. Me needs shields and heavy armour, I don't like playing combat-heavy builds in rpg's I like the nimble ranged characters but the frustration has won. heh good game
Super Street Fighter 4
Good god, it took me ages to get good in the first (as pevergreen can attest. I think the first time we played he beat me 7 times in a row, easily). Now playing on a new platform (360) alongside the balance changes, the game feels incredibly different. It's hard to explain how: but it feels as if throw ranges have been reduced across the board (aside from throw based specials like Zangief's piledriver) and the technical system is a lot more clunky and difficult to work with. One of my favorite defenses against throws in SF4 was to simply mash punch through them, but that doesn't work anymore.
Overall though i feel this game is much easier to acclimatize to than the first was, as i've managed a positive win-loss ratio in the three days since receiving it. Good stuff!

MUHAHAHA good thinking, I am fully armoured and guess what, just about everything still kills me with a single hit godallmighty what am I doing to myself. I love this game you absolutely dread every encounter, with the dark and depressing gameworld and the hidious creature design this is one scary game.
Bought some microsoft points, go to add them to my account - turn on 360 and find xbox live is down. ARGH! *flips table*
Thinking about picking up AC2 soon, i absolutely HATED it on pc when i had the chance to play it. It played like an incredibly restricted port with awkward controls, maybe on the consoles it's better? I spotted it for $18 used, think I might! Any suggestions from those who've played it on the consoles?
Got it on the ps3, got boring really fast. Controls are fine except for the huge annoyance that is your character jumping of walls when he should go up.

what? I loved it on PS3. though I do admit at times the platforming can screw you over, I usually didnt have it happen.
however, its really easy and quick. died a few times, but it toom me like 5 days.
It's a quality title, but it just isn't my kinda thing, it's depressingly easy for a game that wants to be tactical, and the missions aren't very interesting. For 18$ it's worth a try at least though, it got tons of value if you like this kinda thing.
edit: if you have a ps3 get Demon's Souls. Truly extraordinary. It is absolutely sadistic when it comes to difficulty but totally awesome.

Yeah i felt some of that too when i had the opportunity to try it, i was hoping it was simply due to the keyboard and odd key combination i had to struggle with. Guess there's more to it than that.
Thanks for the quick feedback guys, think i'll pick it up since the price is a steal.

If you want to try the heavy route, try thinking hoplite. I had lots of fun with that build, and found it worked well. Use a big shield and a spear with body armour, and maybe a helmet once your character develops a bit. The shield will cover most of you and take most of the damage. You can attack with the spear while holding the shield ready, which you can't do with a lot of other weapon types. Body armour will help absorb some of the blows that get through. Leaving your arms and legs bare or lightly armoured will make it easier for you to keep your equipment weight under the threshold at which your agility is cut down; keeping your agility so you can roll is important because some attacks will smash through your shield. If you can't wear body armour and remain below the threshold ditch it, since the big shield and roll are most important. The purple flame shield is awesome for this build and you can get it quite early on. You'll need to work on your strength before you can use it easily though, so plan for that from the beginning.
I started as a soldier and found it very well suited to this build as it begins the game with the right equipment. Just take some of the armour off and away you go.
Thinking about picking up AC2 soon
I really enjoyed that game, such a sense of freeedom to bounding around the rooftops and running up walls. I liked building up my castle town, getting new equipment and trying it out on hapless guards, and just generally soaking up the sights. I had no problems with the controls except for a couple of the assassin's tomb sections, and that was mainly down to the nasty fixed camera angles.
Mind you, I liked the first one too. Well, except for that massive chain of annoying fights near the end and the 'die if you touch water' thing. I spent a lot of time exploring and messing around in the game world so I didn't chase through the story quickly enough for reptition to become a major issue.

I would have gotten AC2 if it wasnt for that dang copyright protection- why wont they take into account that there are people who dont have constant access to the internet?
Not thinking about hoplites is the hardest part, always. But the knight starts out fine and can use a spell or miracle without having to waste points, and no points wasted especially on the ever useless luck. And he looks brutal from the go YAY for knights. Soldier spear is awesome but it burns stamina like crazy, if there are two or god forbid three enemies one will run right through your defence.
Did I already say that I like this game.

It isn't too bad, luckily, namely because most PC's are online a lot, especially in this MMO-era.
However, the game has been really cheap at lots of places because of it.

Hmm, I never used magic much on that character. It didn't feel necessary; my spear handled most things and my long sword sliced up the rest. Using the jab attack doesn't take much stamina and it's quick. The uber attack (both shoulder buttons? Been months since I played) was much too costly and gave little in return. Clever use of terrain and positioning kept the enemy manageable most of the time, and when it didn't I broke out the sword.
I admit that I was instantly taken by the presence of mostly accurate armour and fighting styles instead of the usual spiked shoulder guards and "I don't know how to use weapons so let's have the characters swing them like baseball bats" rubbish, and was completely content to revel in using traditional arms for my first character. I had a little military history fangirl moment when I saw how the spear and shield worked in this game; it's the first one I can think of to do it accurately. Even mount and blade doesn't. Squeal indeed.
I plan to do a royal at some point and unload with the magical uber-death then. There's something so ridiculous about exploring such a grim game as a girly-girl princess prancing around with a fairy wand that I have to do it.
I sometimes wonder about combining heavy armour with one of those massive two-handed weapons. That would be hard to play, something of a glass cannon I expect.
That's one of the things this game really nails: all characters are viable and there are loads of different builds. No matter how many you try there always seems to be another neat one that needs trying.
Did I already say that I like this game.
It's the one game which makes me glad I own a PS3. Would love a good sequel.
With a royal you will rofl your way through the early parts, that princess has one mighty spell and solid magic recovery from the go. This game is really starting to challenge Thief as my all time favourite, as a fellow Thief-fan you just know that's an insane claim to be made. But it's soooo moody and brutally difficult and most of all scary.

Still playing through Dragon Age, though I haven't had much time in the last fortnight. I also bought Dragon Quest IX on DS earlier this week and after clocking up a few gameplay hours I have to say that I'm really quite enjoying this for the moment. I'll put up something more substantive as I get more into it but so far it seems really well done.

Did you happen to play it on the PC? If you did I don't know how you can say those things, since controlling the game with a keyboard is about as broken and annoying as it gets. My copy for 360 arrived way earlier than expected, been too busy to play it much but I can already feel an immense difference. The AC franchise was definitely built with a controller in mind, it just feels right.

Currently playing Dead Rising: Case Zero. Pretty good.
Did you happen to play it on the PC?
No. I played the 360 version as the PC version was out months later and I played at release. Even if that were not so there were two reasons either of which alone would have stopped me looking at the PC version:
1. The PC version has nasty DRM which I will not go near no matter how badly I want the game it's been slapped on.
2. It's really the complete opposite of the kind of game I use my PC for. It's made for a controller, sofa and HD TV setup.
Playing through Mafia II on hard this time, looks like the only thing to be worried about is the final chapter. It's pretty easy, cover and shoot.
It's a shame Dead Rising: Case Zero is limited to certain regions, I was looking forward to it. I'm deciding on whether to download the Tomb Raider arcade game or LIMBO.
Mass Effect 2 on insanity, harder than I thought it would be. Maybe I shouldn't have played as a soldier this time.
And finally, Nobunaga's Ambition. Just started a campaign as the Oda in 1560 Okehazama scenario. Killed Yoshimoto, allied with the Tokugawa, and conquered Mino. After defeating the Saito and setting Mino as the capital, I found myself being attacked by both the Asai and Asakura. After two huge field battles of which both had outnumbered me, I won and executed Yoshikage. They still have their lands with Asakura Azumo (Yoshikage's daughter) as their leader, basically a puppet for me to get to the capital without any trouble. Soon after, the Asakura divided into two factions -- Echizen ruled by Yoshikage's eldest son and Omi by Azumo and her Asai vassals. I also have another one of Yoshikage's sons under my service.
I'm labeled as a "traitor" to the court and nobody besides Tokugawa and what's left of Asakura has good relations with me. Don't know what to do now that the Takeda are starting to get annoying, so I'm producing plenty of muskets.
To those suggesting I get a PS3 a page back: the only reason i was getting a console was my brother was getting rid of his since he never uses it, so instead of throw it away I told him to send it to me. I don't think I could afford a console with the way my financial situation is right now. But the joke's on me, I guess. The 360 that arrived bricked under a week later, poor thing caught an E74. Good thing it's still under warranty, i really don't feel like fixing this one myself. :laugh4:
Good news is I got to play Red Dead Redemption from start to finish before it died, great stuff. Probably the best open world game i've ever had the chance to play.

Warcraft 3 again (just custom maps)
Starcraft 2
Thats pretty much it.
Fallout 3 on very hard, it isn't if you know what you are doing, when seen it's time to flee as you simply can't beat most enemies, good sneaking and high perception are a must, you can usually circle around them. It's much enjoyable when you really have to use your stimulants and stimpacks, for a player like myself every bite from my inventory is heartbreaking, be it a psycho or even a wasted bullet from my hunting rifle. I like the hunting rifle so much that I hardly use it.

STALKER SoC Complete 2009.
Good fun. I almost made in my pant in Yantar and X-16, even though it's the second time I'm doing it. Currently at the army warehouse, doing some running around for quests. Not sure whether I'll side with Duty or Freedom, or stay neutral.
Duty just sounds like a bunch of reactionnary soldiers while some members of Freedom seem to be psychotic murderers. Neither faction is my cup of tea.
I'm finally finding some cool guns. Too many of them actually, with the limited inventory. Assault Rifles with scopes and silencers are a lot of fun.

It's an older game, 3 years old by a small company so it isn't great quality, but its cool. However some parts are just unfairly overpowered.
I like it. fun shooter thats not like most others so its unique.
However, I think they stole some sounds from TES2: Daggerfall. Mainly door opening sounds. Might report that...
I've been playing Birth of the Federation quite a bit again. Having learned a little how to use a tool called Ultimate Editor (created specifically for this game), I've edited/modded various ship & building stats, as well as adding a couple of my own. What fun!
I've also finally started a Castille campaign in Europa Universalis 3 (easy difficulty). Gonna do the Reconquista thing, and then see about forming Spain. :sweatdrop:
Gothic I. So, I bought it of GoG. Impressions of a 9 y.o. game.... Interesting so far, dated yes, but well done. The interface and controls suck, aweful.

Most people consider ODST to be a throw-away title, the single-player was only 5 hours. If you can get it super cheap then it might be worth it if you're a hardcore halo fan - but there's no way i'd pay more than $20 for it. Imo.

If I had a 360 I'd get it used, but only cuz it has about half the cast of Firefly doing voice work.
Call of Pripyat. Having played it at a friends, and not been impressed, I caved and actually went out and got my self a copy. Thoughts:
Interface is very good
Weapon/armour/item/artifact system very good and very intuitive
Graphics improved, but at the cost of atmosphere
Atmosphere is largely gone, doesn't feel like the Zone, it feels like a game
Soundtrack is lacking, but the ambient Zone noises are more varied, which is welcome
Looks pretty short, I'm almost 1/3 of the way through after less than a day. Plus I played a throw-away game at first to get a feel for the game, so a few hours
I miss the quirky bad translations!
Overall, I like. Some very welcome changes and updates. But there is something missing. Can't define it, almost intangible. Very good though.

I got it for the Halo: Reach Beta code, but other than that I wouldn't have got it.
I do agree with Monk though. Looking back, I shouldn't have bought it for more than $20. The campaign is cool, but not much is new from Halo 3. Mainly guns. Firefight mode I never played more than a few times, so don't know much about that.
Don't buy it for more than $20, and honestly, now that the new one is out tomorrow, I wouldn't buy it period. It doesn't advance the story at all.

I was intending to play it at some point anyway, just didn't realise there was a demo to tinker with. Might make me more eager to buy the game; right now I'm planning to wait for the inevitable sale. I'm trying to buy fewer games near their release period nowadays; it seems better to chip away at my existing pile of games and then pick up titles when they hit the half price mark several months later. Only special games get brought near release now ... and they have to be decently priced to justify it. It's been a good move; I'm catching up on my backlog and saving money at the same time.
Recettear might be special enough. It's certainly cheap. Well, until I think about the inevitable 50% off come Christmas.

Just finished Dragon Age then and I have to say once again how much I love this game. The difficulty is quite high (though considerably lower once you get a healer on your team) and the world is immensely deep.
Now to play KOTOR thanks to it being $2.50 on Steam...
Difficulty kinda took the fun out of Kotor. Excellent storytelling, unlike most I really didn't expect the twist, but the gameplay is watching your characters tearing everything apart. But it does a better job of feeling like Starwars then all the movies combined, immersed me totally like the movies did when I was young. Morality system is too straightforward. Sometimes being the smug lightside jedi should have dire consequences and a little bit evil is sometimes for the greater good, in Kotor it's helping the old lady cross the street or killing her for fun.

Then you missed out on some compelling gameplay, friend. KOTOR2 was famous for having a terrible, thrown together ending and way more bugs than were excusable. However, it was pure fun from start to finish, with a morality system that made you question the wisdom in light-side choices and easier item management (too bad the inventory system was pure crap.) The one huge downside is that it basically took everything you did in the first game and invalidated it within 15 min. To me? It's a fun, non-canonical story set in a familiar universe. ~:)

There are only a few scary moments in Shadow of Chernobil. The Agroprom Tunnel, Yantar, X-18 & X-16 and the tunnel in the Red Forest (which only lasts for a few minutes). Apart from these intense but short moments, the game is bearable, even for a chicken like me. The worst is obviously and by far, Yantar factory and the X-16 lab. I only do this part in the morning.
You should try to finish it, because reaching the true ending is quite rewarding.
I'll jump onto Clear Sky and Call of Pripyat once I've finally decided to waste my last salary on a warmachine-computer. My current Trash 80 2.0 can barely handle Shadow of Chernobyl.
MUHA Templar Knight in Demon's Soul is fun, yay for Halberd feels soooooooooooooo good. Very versatile weapon, excellent range and if you twohand it he uses it as a billhook. Love combat in this game, not since Die by the Sword has using a certain weapon-type felt so real. Exactly right. Owwwwww :daisy: what a great great game
I found that STALKER had a great atmosphere. Not scary really but the atmosphere, at least in the first game really sucked one in.

Well, after Halo: Reach and the new CoD, get old, I'll be looking for a new game. the Demons Souls review looks promising, plus its only 30 bucks. but I also am interested in getting ME1. I played part of it before, and it seemed pretty cool. not sure hwich one though, I think Demons Souls, just to get away from shooting so much.

Recettear is a charming, humorous piece of addict bait gaming. It has so much to do and is so hard to put down it could eat gamers' lives, and if they ever release a version on the DS or PSP the world's probably doomed. If it weren't for the fact that Civ 5 has shot up my list from "Probably don't care because Civ 4 is good enough" to "Need! Now!" I'd be buying.
Capitalism, ho!
I liked the demo but couldn't figure out how to leave a dungeon with the loot I had already collected. So I ended up with my adventurer leaving on a stretcher each time.
You can leave every 5 levels. Other than that you're stuck.

You can't go wrong with either.
Demons Souls is an excellent game if you're the right type of gamer to appreciate it. You need to play cautiously and intelligently; rushing in will get you killed over and over again. You also have to be able to let go when you die; if you allow yourself to get frustrated or focus on what you've lost then you will be in the wrong mindset to play well. It is a game where you will die in order to learn how to survive.
If you can handle that, there's plenty of different character builds to try out, all of which are viable. The atmosphere is haunting, the visuals pleasing, and the combat quite unique. It can be a very tense game. Once past the tutorial level the game opens up a lot and leaves it to you which levels you do in which order; if you're having trouble on one level you can try another and return later with better equipment and a higher character level.
ME1 is an excellent RPG and right up there at the top of my personal list. I've completed it 7 times now. You can take your character on into ME2 and pick up the story you tailored through your actions; the links between the two games are very well handled indeed.

I have to admit, I was highly surprised you would enjoy it so much. Lots of the people I have heard playing it, got it for the visuals. (yes, in that bad way ><)

Had a lot of practice at focusing on gameplay while ignoring :ahem: bad visuals. It's something of a requirement for female gamers unless you limit what you play. Unless it gets more :ahem: later on Recettear is mild as can be - I've survived Star Ocean 4's Lymle, Bayonetta and FFX-2's massage mini game, amongst others.
I play a lot of JRPGs and cursed a lot of greedy item shop owners in them; the game's a good spoof of that and of the genre in general. The gameplay is solid, the writing often lightly amusing, the artwork decent, and the music catchy. It reminds me loosely of the Disgaea games.

I think I'll probably get Demons Souls, if only for the total out-there-ness in that it isnt futuristic nor is it a shooter, in contrast to most of my games.

Are you talking about ME2? then yes, you lose everything, start from spcae 1.
You keep money though.
The weapon and armour system is entirely different in ME2, so you could obviously not keep it.

Demon's Souls is the best game on the ps3, and probably overall for at least a few years, pure genius. It's also sadistically hard with tons of trial and error and cheap death, what you haven't seen before is going to kill you several times.
edit, no you keep all armour, but you loose all your experience points.

Let us know what you think
As Fragony said, you don't lose your equipment. One thing I was a bit confused about before I played the game myself was what happened to your demons souls when you died; I'd seen a lot of discussion about you lost them, and how your character's stats were dependant on them. It sounded like you could lose levels by dying. You can relax; that's not true. Any souls that have been spent to buy stat points remain spent; any you have not spent get dropped. You have one chance to pick them back up again; find the blood stain at the spot where you died and touch it and you get your souls back. Die again before you can do that and they are lost forever.
I don't know if the deluxe edition is still available, it was the only version out when I imported mine but I think there's now a regular edition as well. If it is available it's worth getting over the regular edition. It comes with a guide that's actually very handy; it doesn't tell you much about how to complete levels or defeat foes. No, the bulk of the 160 pages are spent on detailed information about items, spells, abilities, world tendancy, enemies, characters, classes, item upgrading - everything, in short, to help you plot how best to tackle the character build and challenges you want.

alright cool. so I think I'll get Demons Souls sometime this week, play that when I cant play on the Xbox (dinner time, night, someone else is on it), which should be a good amount of time.
EDIT: Just got it, might pop it in either now or sometime later tonight. I've heard it was really scary, so I think nighttime would be best, right?
any suggestion on character builds? I know that they can be pretty important in this game. I do want a melee-heavy tank character, but I wouldn't mind someone whos like...lighter armor or more agile, but still a melee-heavy guy. I think after this I'll do stealthy assassin sort of dude than maybe an archer.
Knight starts out best, heavy armour but surprisingly agile, the minimum for a spell or a miracle, and no points wasted on luck. Temple night is my favorite heavy though because he starts with the very versatile Hallberd. Wanderer is your typical light melee, high damage and light armour

Ok, after testing out Soldier and Temple Knight, I think I'll go with soldier or knight. dont like the giant halberd that keeps hitting walls, and the soldier gets a million more drops, usually crescent moon grass (mary jane?) to keep me healed up. the only thing I can think would be better about the knight (besides the looks) is the longsword. dont intend on casting spells, pure melee btw.
Hallberd should be used two-handed, he will make a quik forward jab if you use a light attack so no trouble with walls, and a 360 mow with strong one which is immensely useful when ganged up upon, using a weapon with two hands also adds no less than 50% on damage, two handed halberd=lol@heavy armour, excellent against blue and red-eyed knights who can be a bit of pain early on. The strong attack will also be your best friend with the first boss if you add fire damage.

Well, I finished Vampire The Masquerade - Bloodlines. I'd be willing to nominate it as one of my favorite games ever, but there are a few issues with it.
Namely, combats are pretty blank. Whether you're using a sword or a submachinegun, it feels clumsy, slow and rather dull. Which is only made worse by the fact that there's basically no challenge in the game: except for a few fights, you never feel threatened. Vampiric powers allow the player to slash through dozen of humans opponents with ease.
The whole sneaky/infiltration part of the game is pretty good, unless you're playing a bloodline that has the offuscate power. Then it just becomes too easy, since you can become unvisible anytime you want. At the highest levels, you can even kill people while being invisible, which pretty much defeats the whole point of both fighting and sneaking your way through.
As for the "talk your way in" option, it saddly relies more on your caracter's skills than onto the dialogue lines you choose. That's unfortunate. If you can persuade, the line appears in blue. Threaten in green, seduce in pink, and that's it. You don't even have to try to find a way to use these skills, as the option to do so appears right away.
Apart from that, it's clearly a great game, which offers a lot of replayability. Not only you get 5 different endings, but the 5 bloodlines, offer different gameplay and options. The two funniest are obviously the Malkavians and their constant stream of nonsense, and the Nosferatu, who have to be sneaky at all time. I liked Toreador too simply because you could solve most issues by persuading or seducing everyone.
The game is mature, which has its pro and con. The pro is that it's sometime hilarious, with a lot of big word and f-bombs thrown around. Some dialogue lines are classic. ("It would be degrading to photchop it into a tacky poster, so that's what I did" :D). The con is the whole sexual innuendo and the large amount of big-boobed-vampire-babes. That would be fine, if it wasn't one-sided: there's no sexy male vampire, no male blood dool, no male romance, etc. As it is,to me it looks like an attempt to cater at young sex-starved teenagers.
Overall, I had a great time, but strangely, I'd have appreciated less fighting zones. The best part of the game for me is when you start in Santa Monica and investigate on various events. Killing mobs in corridors was clearly the less interesting part of the game.

wow, this game is reaaaaly sadistically difficult. I'm feeling confident, cutting through hordes of Demons on my way through 1-2, when I get past the first 2 dragon bridges in that level. get to the third one, get past it, then see the 3 crossbowman and blue knight that stand before me. no prob, I think.
kill 1 crossbowmen, 2 if im lucky. lure out the knight, dodge around him, kill the remaining ones. then comes the part where I die every time. I can simply never get around the Blue Knights attacks, and i cant deal the kind of damage to stop him from killing me, though I got close once. if I die, turn off the PS3 before it saves, so I can re-boot and start right back there rather than at the beginning with even less health as a spirit.
I mean one guy, out of the hundred I must have killed by now, is totally screwing me up. gah! too hard but I must beat it!!!!!!!!!!!

Blue eyes knight and red eyes knight are very tough foes for beginner level characters. You're not really supposed to engage them until later on; many of them guard paths into later levels in that world. Either avoid them or run as fast as you can ... or get smart and do things like luring them to fall to their deaths down 90 foot staircases, though that's dangerous and hard to pull off.
Or, if you want to fight, use your agility. You can't take many hits from these enemies so don't be there to get hit. Dodge roll, weave your way around their swings by strafing, trigger their attacks by darting into range and then backing away to come back in with a quick jab as the attack finishes. A shield is more use against them than heavy armour, so if you need to shed gear to restore your agility make sure you keep a medium or large shield. Don't be afraid to use a healing item. You've got to treat them with a healthy respect; do that and it's a bit easier to have the right mindset to beat them.
Better yet, why not do a few soul runs and build up your character and skills? Enter a level, kill a bunch of enemies, use the portal you arrived in to get back to the hub and spend your souls. Not only will this strengthen your character, you'll become more adept with the controls and combat.
You can also try doing a different world. You're doing 1-2 now; you can do 1-1 for any of the other worlds. The difficulty does not icnrease by world number so much as by level number. Some worlds are harder for some character types.
Oh - a tip for navigating: follow the fog. It always covers doorways on the path you're intended to follow at that point.
I would do 1.1, after that 2.1, then 3.1 you get it. Actually beating a world is hard, you will face 3 redeyed knights at once in world 1 for example, basically impossible for a low level character.
Quick question, is Sins of a Solar Empire any good? I was thinking of getting the trinity version.

4x strategy is a little hard to get used to but trust me, Sins is worth the low price they ask for it, the huge downside to it is there isn't any kind of campaign game, it's purely skirmish and multiplayer. If that's what you like in your strategy games then you'll feel right at home.

Reminds me of Sword of the Stars. Probably why I kept getting the two mixed up.
Have to admit, it wasn't what I fully expected, lower rating then most reviews. I tried making friends with one of the AI's (we had several treaties) then they just declared war on me again, cutting all ties. In the end I ended up winning though. Pirates were interesting. I kept sending them to raid the AI places for example.
There was a battle of interest though. I sent pirates to an AI home world (last time I was there, they defeated my fleet). I ended up with a brand new even bigger and better fleet and ended up sending that to the Home-world.
When I got there, it was pirates versus the AI in a very big battle, which I ended up joining in, then the other AI (Green), also warped in, producing a massive 4 way combat space-battle. The original AI lost, and the 3 of us left were heavily battered. I managed to get a colony ship there to claim the world for myself, and quickly got working on producing defenses, etc. It was getting down to the 3 of us having like 3 ships, as my other big fleet came warping in and the defenses went up, resulting in my victory.
So I will rate it on the good side.

I've killed the Fools Idol (3-1 boss) twice now, but nothing is happening. ive read there should be a cutscene, but nope. if i leave the fog and come back in, she is alive again and i have to kill her again. now I'm at enough health to where 1 blue magic bolt thingy of hers would kill me, and I have no more grass. all my full moons, half moons, and crescent moons are gone. wtf? is this a glitch? did i do something wrong?

There's more to this one than charging in and killing her.
Spoiler light tip: look around for ... others.
Spoiler heavy tip:
She has a friend who revives her each time she dies. Find and kill them first or the battle is unwinnable. He's up a spiral staircase somewhere close before the fog that leads to the boss.

Are you upgrading at the blacksmith? That's a large part of getting strong weapons. The special named weapons are all hard to get. Either you have to defeat tough enemies, or you have to play with world tendancy. Sometimes a combo of both. Or sometimes they are upgrades of normal weapons using boss souls.

Yah, right now I'm trying to get the Dozer Axe, so I have a Pickaxe upgraded to +3 or +4, which is actually pretty good. only thing is its really slow sometimes, which means I have to wear less leg armor so I can move better.
problem is I just looked it up and the only thing I get out of a pickaxe level 6 is a Meat Cleaver, which I can use a club level 0 to upgrade from. so I'll get a club and then meat cleaver too I guess.
so now, still wanting a Dozer Axe, I'm not sure what I should do. I'm in Soul Form, and I cant progress very far in 4-1 without luring enemies out 1 at a time. even if I could, I need 31 Hardstone and 9 large shards of hardstone to get it. help?

Yes to the first, and I think so but am not sure to the second.
I always play in offline mode, and would even if I didn't have a strong dislike for MP of any kind. The potential for other people to ruin your fun is way too large; blue phantoms and messages aren't much of a loss.

It is a fantasy game done bad. it is horrible voice acting (extra lulz if you enable subs, as they don't even match), it has the most uninspiring combat system I have ever come across, which boils down to "slash slash slash" enemy glows (for an attack) so you right click to roll, then you just go slash slash slash, again. Horrible leveling system. Completely underpowered and essentially useless magic system, especially as you have to go through 4 set animations to even switch to it, to let off a crappy spell. Overall, the game was woeful.

I played it, too. Didn't mind the combat as much, got the impression it was just going easy on me for the first part of the game, which is all the demo has, but it was a bit easy, yes.
No problems with the magic but only used it when it was required, what made me more concerned was seeing a weapon that had some magic aura (read: fancy colourful effects around it that are made for little children), this stuff can totally put me off all by itself sometimes.
The dialogues though, are really bad, was the first thing I noticed, they tried to make them like the ones in previous Gothic games but failed horribly (same publisher, different developers, the old story, hardly ever works), the lip synching is nonexistant and everyone looks a bit weird, the girl your char wants to marry is absolutely not charming in any way either.
Your character looks a bit like some california beach surfer boy, at least his haircut does, at least the nameless hero didn't look like he was from a different world...
Despite all that it didn't put me off as much as I expected(probably because I got plate armour toward the end, I <3 plate armour), might buy it as a budget version...

In the meantime I've been playing the heck outta Civ 5 in my free time as well as tooling around in various shooters from my library. UT2k4 and UT classic among them, those games are so amazing, no matter how much time goes by they just don't age. Also been playing Star wars: Battlefront II, such a great mindless shooter.

You know you can kinda kill invaders, the multiplayer spices up the game imho, this game is designed to play online you are missing half the fun
I know you can; I don't want to, and don't want them there in the first place. For my tastes, having any of the MP aspects there there would spoil half my fun. It's not just the red phantoms; I don't want the blue ones either, or the messages, or the ghosts of other peoples' deaths, or the break in the lonely atmosphere.
IMO it's to the game's very great credit that it works equally well in SP and MP, and that each mode offers a different flavour of the experience. That can't be said of many.
The genius is that in multiplayer you feel all the more lonely, they aren't really 'there', sounds really weird but that's how it is.

been playing lots of L4D2 on Xbox with papa, but now hes back on the 10-week training cycle which means that will go away for about 10 weeks :(
just beat Demons Souls first playthrough, and it was not nearly as difficult as you guys made it sound. not counting the times that I unwittingly stepped over an unseen gap in the floor/walkway, or got pushed down the same by an enemy (****** MANEATER!!!!), I died 7 times, 2 were low level trying to beat Shrine of Storms, 4 were from Old King Allant. 1 was super early on in 1-1.
supposedly NG+ is supposed to be ALOT harder, which means that I'll probably lose my 200k souls in 1-1, though hopefully not. I got the evil ending, which I found out means I miss out on Soul Sucker til next playthrough >:O which suuuucks because CoD is comin out in a month.
but its a really fun game. one thing that really pissed me off though was that I got my Winged Spear to +4, and alot of the upgrades require +3, which meant I couldn't upgrade it to be like poisonous or magic. humph.
Yes N+ is harder Maneater is currently mobbing the floor with my armour, but how you managed to die only a few times is beyond me.

After a month of nothing but PC gaming, I've been tying up some console game loose ends thanks to moving to windows 7 and experiencing nothing but trouble to the point where using my PC feels like a massive chore. Ironic since I moved to windows 7 so I could go from 2GB of RAM to 6GB and play civ 5 on larger maps.
I've done all of Mass Effect 2's DLC. I finished Dead Rising 2: Case Zero. Currently I'm midway through the only Bioshock 2 DLC I will get, Minerva's Den, and expect to finish that later today. After that I'm not so sure; I might do the rest of the Dragon Age DLC, or I might go back to try and finish Broken Bond, a game which isn't nearly as much silly-fun(TM) as the title it is a sequel to. Or I might do something else entirely.
not counting the times that I unwittingly stepped over an unseen gap in the floor/walkway
I only died in 1-1 once. I saw this sparkly hole in the ground which looked like it led into a room. I remembered what people said about following the fog. I walked into the gold sparkly cloud - and promptly fell to my death :wall:

I'm playing Darksiders while I wait for Fallout: New Vegas. It's one I have had on my shelf as something to look forward to for months - I was so sure I'd love it. It sounded exactly like my kind of game. I'm about 5 hours in. I'm disappointed, so horribly disappointed. ~:(
It's like Zelda, everyone says. Yes, I agree. It's like Zelda if you get rid of the colourful, diverse game world and replace it with generic grey urban ruin. If you paper said grey urban ruin with PS2 era textures. If you turn the varied, enjoyable combat into a brainless, skill-less, tedious button masher. If you replace the puzzles with ... oh, wait, no, just copy and paste the puzzles and hope your intended audience has forgotten the solutions. If you get rid of the catchy music in favour of some generic bland stuff that's so forgettable I can't tell you a thing about it because I can't remember anything. If you get rid of the simple, elegant controls and replace them with an over-complicated mess that makes weird decisions like sticking the all-important dodge/block function on the right bumper button so I have to change the way I hold the controller for a less comfortable grip that doesn't mesh too well with the way it was designed. If you tear out the loads of little upgrades you want to buy for your character, and replace them with stuff the player can't see any point in. If you get rid of the multitude of neat time wasting things to do in the game world and don't replace them.
So it's like one of the 3D Zelda games if you get rid of everything that makes them fun.

After playing Men of War I could never go back to CoH.
After playing MoW I'm thinking I'm probably only clever enough for CoH. MoW would be completely brilliant if I were a machine that could multi-task all my units effective. As it is, I only got up to the penal battalion mission in the Russian campaign. It's just not worth micromanaging thirty dudes' inventories to get them all the ammo and grenades you need. Plus my repairable T-34 managed to lose the repair box. -_-
Hooahguy
10-19-2010, 07:04
What I did in that mission was send small squads out, and kept the rest back. Where I needed men to hold the line/supressing fire I had them pick up as much ammo as possible and then left them.
I personally thought that mission was fantastic, I loved having to hold on, tooth and nail, to what resources you had. I lost the tanks early on (stupid hidden AT gun) on the right flank, so I had to relocate my men to the left flank and make the push from there, where the Germans were weaker.
That game as a whole is better with small unit tactics, IMO. But thats how I managed the missions with more men. I actually couldnt get past the Sevastpol mission, so I went into the files and bypassed it. :shame:
Theres also a mission where you sneak through German lines, that mission was great as well.
If you get Red Tide, theres many more of the small unit missions, but the first two are the bigger missions, I thought they were fantastic though.

It's as cool as the original, and I do like the updated moves and everything, but it is so unbearably short it's ridiculous. I mean, there are literally 4 playable locations (not including Dagobah, in which you fight nothing and is really a giant cutscene), and each of those is only about the length (if not shorter) of a mission in the first one. So.....not that great. Honestly, it could have been GOTY for me if it had been at least the length of the original.

I finished Darksiders a bit ago. Overall verdict is a resounding meh. Lots of other games do the 'I want to be Zelda/Metroid!' thing far better, such as Batman: Arkham Asylum. Very disappointing.
Naruto: Broken Bond also scores a big fat meh. The first game, Rise of a Ninja, was a fun adventure with some nice ideas, good enough to be recommended outside of its target audience otherwise I'd never have heard of it let alone played it. The sequel got rid of some of the neat ideas, added some new ones which were badly overused (how many times did I have to watch the same few canned animations and mash buttons to bypass a barrier? Hundreds, easily.), and dragged me through a dull story mode that lacked the fun factor of the original's thanks to some terrible level design.
Parting the sea of meh and showing me that I'm not a burned out gamer soaked in apathy was Costume Quest, the new downloadable RPG from Doublefine. Highly recommended! It's a delightful little game and I thoroughly enjoyed every second I spent with it. It's genuinely charming. The whole design of the thing is playful. The writing is honestly funny, not the forced funny that so often inhabits games. The premise is simple: it's Halloween and your twin has been kidnapped by monsters while you were out trick or treating. You need to get them back so you don't get in trouble when you return home. Costumes become real when you enter combat with a monster, so if you're dressed as a robot you turn into a giant stompy robot with death missiles, a knight becomes an armoured colossus, etc. Your party grows to three people by the middle of the game, and you get a good variety of costumes to choose from, Each has different abilities, such as healing or group attacks, different affects on your characters' stats and HP, and different world map adventure abilities. The game's easy but that fits the design: it's meant to be fun and about soaking up the charm. Took me about 6 hours to finish with 100% which is about normal for a 1200 point xbox live game.
And, of course, I'm playing Fallout: New Vegas. Excellent indeed; everything I was expecting Fallout 3 to be and then some! I'm taking my first playthrough slowly, savouring the experience. I'm also doing something I don't usually: I'm playing it in concert with another game. Normally I focus on one title until I have completed it, then move along. New Vegas is too absorbing; if I play it on its own I'll finish it faster than I want to.
Playing Fable 3. No one else?
Maybe when it's half price. I liked Fable I. Fable II was ok. It had enough decent bits that I'd like to see them do the same general game design but without all the dodgy and/or boring and/or pointless bits. III sounds like it does a bit of that ... and adds some new bad ideas of its own, such as that new menu system.
Plus I really dislike the premise of the story - they want to take my Fable II character and force a future on her which doesn't match with anything I envisaged at all. For starters I can't be playing as my old hero's daughter because she doesn't have one! She's got a single son and that's it, no other children. I'd rather they left my old hero out of it completely aside from the occasional very vague reference, as Fable II did with I's hero. It looks like the only way to stop them dragging my Fable II character in is to entirely delete my old saves and that's crazy.

Really? I can sort of see that for choosing clothes and so on. You get to see what it looks like before you put it on. May be ok for weapons if it shows the stats as you look at the item and compares them with what you're already carrying; I heard somewhere it doesn't do this so you have to equip the weapon before you can find out if it's better than your old one.
The mini map is my major concern. I tend to refer to them frequently and thus like them readily available with the press of a single button. I will unhappily put up with two button presses. Two button presses and some menu scrolling is irksome. Having to load a menu, walk to the map room, walk to the map, arrnage the camera so I can see the map, etc, it all sounds like a right royal pain in the bum. And what about the quest log? I hear that there isn't one as such. Instead you have to look on the map to see the quest notes. Seems like more time and clicks to get the same result as a traditional menu.
Maybe you should start a Fable III topic with some impressions? There were quite a few people around here who played the other two.

That is a lie. It tells you what the stats are while you are browsing them. Though in this, there are no "iron, steel, etc" weapons, every weapon is an unique weapon.

I could do if some others were interested as well. Though, the worst thing about the game is its linear storyline, I miss being able to role play as a beggar or similar in Fable 2, now, you are pretty much just Hero (later: King).

It was heartbreaking when one of the NPC assist guys got caught in an ambush and shot. I tried to rescue him (popped the baddies and dragged him off to safety) but I didn't understand how morphine worked and ended up giving him too much. He died, then to make me feel worse, the game said I "mercy killed" him. I was devastated. I think I started a new game.

I disagree about the multiplayer being WaW, but I have to admit that there is a significant amount of lag involved in nearly every game, as well as many camping spots with little cover to hide from. I think they should have instituted a 1st person Gears of War cover mechanic, or at the very least something so you can press yourself up against cover to where you're not hanging out and can blind fire.
However, it is still lightyears better than MW2 in lots of ways (not only new content like emblems, customization, etc. but also in design and balancing), like the removal of quickscoping (woulda liked to keep it in private match, but whatever) from online play (mostly), the nerfing of noobtubes (though now they feel criminally underpowered, only direct body hits will kill), removal of the "noob" perks (commando, OMA, danger close) and balancing out of returning perks (marathon non-pro only gives extra sprint, not unlimited).
though I do feel like the killstreaks not counting toward the next killstreak....should have been more moderate. I think you should get half of the kills from the killstreak kills counting toward your next killstreak, 1/4 of the kills for chopper gunner and dogs, and full credit for the RC car explosive. I've never seen anyone get over a 7 killstreak reward except from a care package, so I doubt we will ever see more than a couple chopper gunners in the next year.
the guns are pretty well balanced, but again the sheer amount of LAG means that too often I either get hit markers when I should get kills, or even the killcam says that bullets are going into their body but not hurting them somehow. and rockets get hit markers too often. and grenades. and sometimes snipers. everything does, but snipers should always be 1-hit kill, except maybe a foot shot or something like that, and a rocket/plastic explosive blowing up right next to you? you should be dead or at the absolute, very least incapacitated to the point where you are definitely combat innefective (and thus, in the game, dead).
hoever many gripes I have with it, its still better than MW2 and definitely gonna be my most played game til either GoW 3 or next CoD. multiplayer defo 3.75/5, campaign, for sheer shortness and ease, 3/5 (brought up there by the epic helicopter sequences plus the plot was pretty good surprisingly), Zombies, obvious 5/5 for being zombies. my only real gripe with zombies is they seem to be stronger now, I find myself dying at roud 1-3 by getting hit once through the windows, while prior you had enough time to get back before they down you.
I've been playing the highly addictive Zombie Driver (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzWYxZLZWOE). It's currently $5 on Impulse. :2thumbsup:
Basically, you earn a selection of vehicles that you can upgrade and take them out on the town to complete various objectives that are assigned to you. Generally, the missions are either about rescuing survivors or clearing a certain area of zombies. Probably the most effective weapon is the bumper of your car, but you also get access to a variety of mountable weapons that can be invaluable as well. Good stuff... I just wish it had multiplayer.

Fallout: New Vegas. Yeah, Nightkin are way too powerful on Very Hard.
I'm currently playing a character on my brothers PS3 copy, on my PS3 before I get it on the PC. playin on hard, not hardcore. and yes, the nightkin are BEASTS, at least when you don't haev any really good guns. I just about punched myself when I found out that at at REPCONN, you could just talk to the one nightkin rather than having to try to kill all them. wasted about 30 minutes trying and failing with the whle killing thing.
I like the game on whole, and my favorite addition is the more realistic firefights. with the exception of fighting melee-oriented people, firefights (at least the large ones I always get to fight in, with over 5 people on each side) are far more realistic. when you get into cover, you are stuck there, unless you take out at least a guy or two. flanking helps loads, but even then you still have to be careful you dont get shot as their whole force turns around, concentrating their fire on you.
I like that I can side with NCR without actually joining them, acting like a mercenary almost, paid in ammo and armor off dead NCR soldiers as I fight by their side (Boone is AWESOME, btw. hes a bit of a killstealer though. I rush up to someone to kill them....headshoted by boone. repeat. still, rather have him than nobody), and I like to think that I'm sort of an unnoficial helper to NCR troops wherever I see them.
overall, so far, FO:NV=9/10

Heh. I did the same thing, but, the best way to kill them, sneak up towards the path they walk and place a mine, this'll injure their legs, then as they begin to attack you VATS both legs until they're crippled, once done head shot them while running backwards (still sneaking, so others don't come), they're too slow to catch you then.

New Vegas is going to be a multi character thing btw. my current character is a lesbian (awwwwright), my first female character, and she likes to snipe and use the Service Rifle from farther ranges (some of the shots I pull off while sneaking from enormous range are craaaaazy instakills). she is pro NCR all the way, even if it means going into a bit of a morally grey area, but she does try to do good whenever she can. will use a machete if forced, but preferably shotgun at close range.
currently doing first BoS mission.

I recently bought Sacred (bundled with Sacred Underworld) for $5 on clearance. I finally installed it last night and played for a bit. Kind of Diablo-ish. So far I'm intrigued but dying a lot as I try to figure out how things work. Guess it would help to at least skim the e-docs...I hope there are docs on the disk.
I have reinstalled Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy as of late. I am playing on the easy difficulty level, because the last time I played the lightsabor battles became somewhat difficult for me. I can manage now. I actually have progressed farther than I did the last time I played. My Jedi, named 'Poop Smell', is now a jedi knight weilding twin lightsabors! :D
Also, I downloaded KOTOR on Steam the other day and am playing that. I enjoy that game as well. My soldier class lady, named..., is doing quite well on the first level. My first ever RPG and I didn't know what I was missing! Though I have noticed something annoying. After combat sequences, my character gets stuck after all is said and done. I can't move her no matter what I do. I have to save, go back to the main menu, then load to move her again. Has this happened to anyone else? Is there a fix or is this just a personal problem?
Playing M2TW on and off as well.

Press escape to get the main menu then press escape again to leave the menu that usually fixes it. No need to save and load.

Thanks, I am thus far. I thought of turning off the setting that disables movement during combat to see if that helps the next time I play.

you didn't?
Pokemon taught me to read. no joke.
Uncharted 2, if you got a ps3 get this game. Incredible visuals, truly spectacular, but it's also incredibly fun. Full of humour, fantastic Indiana Jones vibe (It's funny when Drake takes a beating), great music. I'm really impressed.
Make that 'stunned' this game is amazing. I want to hook Blake up with Cate Archer, that would be cool. What makes this game so good is that you don't even care about the flawless gameplay, (and flawless it is, when it wants to be a stealthgame it's a stealthgame, same for shooter, adventure etc), you want to know what happens next. Blake is extremely likable, he's bigger than the game he's the real star. Only 'No one lives Forever' pulled that of and this game is just as good, and that's saying a lot coming from me as I absolutely adore No one lives Forever. It's just as stylish, witty and self-assuredly silly, and full of little touches; genius is always in the little touches. Absolutely&utterly A+ material it's incredibly fun. And these graphics wowowow, not just a little bit good they are from a different planet, WOW

just got new Assassins Creed last night for Channukah (yah biznitches!), putting it in now. only have like 2 hours to play though since my english paper due yesterday has yet to be started :O
Well screw Uncharted 2, very good game but insane technical problems, it just won't load your savegames

Whew, sure there isn't a problem with your harddrive or so? I've played through the whole game without any technical problems, wasn't quite as amazed as you are but it is certainly a very nice game, no problems with savegames whatsoever.
It gets into a loop, music starts repeating and nothing happens. And now I can only start again it forgot all progress, all savegames, they are gone, not here. Seriously broken this one is.

maybe you can still return it and say "hey dude, this isnt working it wont let me load anything and the music is all jacked up." and they'll give you a new one?
Unpatched it now it works, I didn't go console for a game that has 9 patches. It's a stellar game though NOLF has an heir to the throne, I'm absolulily loving it. Incredibly awesome. 10/10
Done, sadly. I am now too spoiled as Uncharted 2 sets a standard. Incredibly good game. Can't wait for part trois to see what kind of trouble Blake gets himself in next time, No one lives Forever and Uncharted should get married, damnya I can't aim if I'm laughing. Why can't more games be funny.

I bought a ps3 cause i was fed up with the pc game market and wasent really interested in anything outside totalwar. Just bought an i7 too and was a pretty pointless buy for me since pc games arent really any good at the moment.
Bought 8 top games for the ps3 and so far i tried red dead redemption which is excellent and continues to surprise me and keep me interested. God of war 3 which is very good but havent played it much, still got to try uncharted 1 and 2 which i hear are excellent and heavy rain. gran turismo 5 is ok but thats more for when friends are round so they can play the split screen.

Heh, that's funny, because so many people think all that is wrong with the PC market is the consoles' fault.

Depends on the games and what one is interested in but I also find myself lacking titles that I'm looking forward to ehile some interesting genres hardly get new games anymore. Spent a lot of time with the World of Tanks beta lately but it's not everyone's cup of cake.

The Uncharted games really are good, I found them a bit cheesy now and then but still really good, sometimes you just have to like cheesy anyway.
I'm intrigued about Gran Tourismo 5, could use a good racing game and loads of cars sounds very interesting but then I never played any of the previous games so I don't know what to expect in terms of gameplay, tracks etc. Is it completely in 1080p by the way? Most games are 720p after all.
Oh and what are the other two top titles you bought if I may ask?
As for myself, going to try Demon's Souls today, which finally arrived on Friday after three weeks, trying not to expect too much after all the praise it got here. ~D

Baldur's Gate with the tutu mod that lets you play with the BG2 engine, for maybe the tenth time, then taking the same character into BG2 and ToB. Works flawlessly with the gog versions if anybody was on the fence.

@Husar I expect a writedown on DS. Awesome game, did you know that you are going to die a lot?
Meh wanted to try hard mode and the game just refuses to load again. I am really amazed that a triple A title like this is so terribly broken, how did it get through testing it's beyond me. 10/10 for the game when you get to play it, but you can't play it if it doesn't load. Naturally.

Picked up Civilization: Revolution for the PS3. I wanted a strategy game but didn't want to deal with DRM or Steam. I have been impressed with it so far but the AI is overly aggressive to your civ and diplomacy is useless so you have to spend too much time building a military.
I won a cultural victory with India on Warlord difficulty and a tech victory with the Greeks on King difficulty so far.
What is the diplomacy like in Civ V? I could maybe put up with DRM and steam if Civ V is good enough.

Really basic. Avoid Civ V until the expansions come out. My mates have it, they've all gone back to playing Civ IV. =/
Bought Metal Gear 4 for 12 euro, lol that's a steal. I have been severally spoiled by Uncharted 2, need a knew cinematic experience to keep me busy. Haven't even beaten the Batman game and Assasins Creed 2 but playing them feels so meaningless
need a knew cinematic experience to keep me busy.
Just played Infinity Blade on the iPhone, it's a very cinematic experience, a bit linear(and short, but multiple playthroughs are a story element here so to say) but beautiful graphics, decent gameplay, and multiplayer as well as a new level are planned already.
Got no I-phone, got a much more advanced one, you can call with it and send text-messages, this baby even comes with 30 ringtones. Awesome.
And not going to buy one with the -going to be epic- 3DS around the corner. But must admit that that thing can really process awesome graphics but don't see myself playing games on it.

Ugh, that's horrible, I know it's very advanced to have custom ringtones etc. but I'm glad it's not possible on the iPhone, I would always make some and then feel terrible when everyone hears it as if they could all took a gaze deep into my character, the ultimate invasion of my soul. That's completely overdone but anyway, a normal phone sound has to do, got it on silent most of the time anyway. :laugh4:
Concerning the game, it becomes quite challenging, the comparison to Demon's Souls has been made and it's not even that far off, concerning the fights anyway, although you cannot move around freely in this one, not during the fights and not between the fights either, it's the fighting mechanics and difficulty that seem to bear a certain resemblance, you can block, dodge, parry and have to attack the enemy when he is off-guard, otherwise they will block all your attacks, the only somewhat cheesy thing is when the enemy is preparing an attack, opening up completely, you can only scratch them, not really hurt them. Overall a well-made game though.
