I don't think we've ever had one of these. May as well give it a try. The idea is simple: say what you're playing, what it's on, and what you think. Progress is optional.

Currently playing:
PS2: Shadow Hearts. About half way after 10 hours. Quite a good RPG, this. A bit different to the usual JRPG; it's got a dark atmosphere, a good(!) random encounter rate, and an interesting battle system which requires concentration and more participation from the player than blindly hitting attack over and over.

Wii: Red Steel. Still dawdling through the opening. Fun. Over the top action movie silliness with great controls.

PSP: Lord of the Rings: Tactics. I've got about 2 hours of play recorded; I'm only playing on my lunch hour when I don't want to read a book. It's nice enough, the missions are bitsized so I can typcially play two per lunch break.

And I am going to finish one of them before I so much as try another game! Even if I get new ones. Even though I don't get much playtime, so it takes ages to finish anything. No more flitting from game to game: I'm going to finish what I start, either playing till the end or until I have had enough and am no longer enjoying myself.

Yay, first after-first-post post!

Civilization IV: Warlords. I'm on a roll with Saladin, playing the easiest difficulty (just learning the ropes, hey!). Despite it being the easiest difficulty, it's not easy for me at all. (Then again, I suck at every game I play.)

I'm playing quite expansionist, keep pushing on settlers after settlers in the hopes of widening my Empire as far as possible -- it's a Pangaea map, so gaining as much land as I could is a priority of mine, despite the drawbacks in maintenance/research. But have been avoiding war so far except for the underhanded Aztecs (damn that Montezuma) attack when I overextended my military. Took me the whole Middle Ages to stop and get back at them.

Right now I'm in Industrial. A very, very fun game. And the Great Walls are beyond awesome.

I've also been getting back on EU2. Awaiting the new AGCEEP with extreme anxiety. Come on, guys! Where's the new map you promised?

All on PC:

MTW:VI, Viking Era Irish campaign, in the mop up stage, should be done in 10 turns or so. Also have a Early Era Danish campaign from a while back, may get around to that after my Irish campaign is done.

I also have Dawn of War I may go back to for some fun, short games, while M2TW and Warhammer MoC are sitting in their boxes, awaiting a newer, faster PC (and patches ~ ).

Now, if you want to excuse me, I just unlocked San Fierro and I have 50 snapshots to take :creep:

Solo play - Civilization Warlords - got drawn back into Civ4s "just one more turn" addiction thanks to the Arena. Got quite far playing Elizabeth on Prince, but then I lost a town to a back stab due to a lack of a military. I also messed up by building the National Epic in a different town from my Great Library and other Wonders. So now I want to start afresh and do things right this time.

I still have a very promising NWN2 campaign on hold - just arrived at Neverwinter - but that's an experience I am holding on for a while so I can savour it. I don't really have enough leisure to do it justice

Multi-player (co-operative with son) - Dawn of War Dark Crusade. 2v2 skirmishes with the AI are fun; the AI works like a real team so it is hard to beat. By contrast, it's a yawn playing solo.

PBM - M2TW HRE campaign in the Throne Room. I should be playing M2TW solo as well, as its a much more satisfying experience than Civ4. But not nearly as addictive. I confess I'm also waiting for the patch, as learning about the 2H and shield bugs has dampened some of my enthusiasm for the battles (knowing they could be better).

PC: M2TW, Cossacks 2: European wars, Far Cry. Plus I just beat FEAR.

Xbox 360: Just beat Splinter Cell:DA, Superman Returns, Oblivion DL content (Theives den and Wizard tower), trying to finish Quake 4. I'm going to pick Star Trek:Legacy again soon.

PS2: Every once in a while I'll pick up SoC and kill a Collosi.

During the workweek: Birth of the Federation, Romulan campaign, Normal difficulty, Domination mode. Have conquered the back-stabbing Cardassians and the "couldn't take a hint to leave me alone" Klingons. Am in a cold war with the self-righteous Federation, and the Ferengi keep demanding tribute even though I overpower them on a scale of at least 4:1. ~

On the weekend(s): MTW/VI - Pocket Mod, Fatamid campaign, Normal difficulty, GA mode. No progress yet beyond the first few years of building/training -- Caravel kept releasing updated versions of the mod, and I was compelled by my neurosis to keep downloading/installing them (thus nullifying the progress I'd made previously). This is going to be the latest update for a while, though, so I finally feel free now to play how I will. :2thumbsup:

Mostly Fire Emblem: the sacred stones (GBA), my second playthrough, started right after I finished it the first time.

I still have to finish the final chapter of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney, but I'm taking a break from that now.

Maybe I should mix in a little BotF with my MTW. It's been a while since I've played. I wonder if it will run on my girlfriend's laptop. :inquisitive: Never tried it on a widescreen, do you know if this works?

WoW -- unfortunately way too much time on this, but my S.O. is infatuated with it, so that's our social gaming time together.

M2TW -- most of the non-WoW, solo gaming hours spent here.

GalCiv2 -- pretty much through with this, but I still go back for a short campaign or two when I want a break from M2TW.

I have no idea, unfortunately - I've just got a plain old 17" CRT monitor. I've *heard* it works okay on flatscreens and laptops, but that the image might not go all the way out to the edges (since the resolution is fixed at 800x600).

Well, have only a PC so:

Medieval 2, quite a great game IMO, even with it's flaws.

Anno 1701, very fun game, takes a lot of time though, you basically populate some islands in the new world and produce goods to advance your population from pioneers through settlers and citizens to merchants and finally aristocrats who pay a lot more taxes. To get all the stuff you need for your population to advance, you will need to open settlements on other islands and build ships to bring the products to your main island. Most of the game is peaceful but wars are also possible with three types of ships able to fight(two merchant versions without cannons) and some land based soldiers. The combat is pretty basic but the focus is on building up and trading with AI players, foreign cultures etc. Well, got carried away in explaining, on to the next

Gothic 3, most of my playing time is spent with the other two at the moment but from time to time, i still play some Gothic 3, a few more patches really couldn't hurt the game, but it can be fun nonetheless.

Supreme Commander Beta, playing this now and then if I have some time and there is a joinable game since open games are not that many, the players always want to start quickly it seems and often joining doesn't work or you get kicked because it has already started.

Lately I also started Silent Storm Sentinels again and may play a few other older games or new demos from time to time(like Mount&Blade).

Well, I 'play' in 3 'categories' pending time and mood ~;)

a) just got Anno 1701 and am delighted and having fun - one just has to have plenty of continuous time to make it worth while...
EU III demo (yesterday) - no comment yet - full version due end of the month
RTW TE5.1, finished 2 campaigns( Rome and Britons) and thinking about starting a 3rd (was waiting for gold, but that won't happen now... )

b) I've 'shelved' Caesar IV ; M2TW for the time being awaiting patches, games with lots of potential but currently falling short...
So its Pharaoh, Baldurs Gate 2, and Victoria

c) for 'fillers' or 'quicky's' I do Minesweeper, Kyodai Mahjongg, and Flight Simulator X

PS, forgot 4th category : bought but not installed/played yet - Oblivion; Age of Empires 3; Freelancer; Emperor rotmK; Quicken Willmaker plus...:ahh:  :laugh4:

Motep
01-20-2007, 07:55
Pc: Age of Empires II (again...), Rome, and Star Wars: something or another (I cant find it)

PS2: Mercenaries: playground of destruction (again), Final Fantasy X (again), Final Fantasy VII (again), and Scarface: The world is yours. All you do in that game is sell cocaine...and kill people...and do missions where you kill people to protect people, deliver goods, smuggle, all with our favorite foul-mouther Cuban.

Hmm.. What I play?

Mostly PC:

TES IV - Oblivion: It's addicting, but it won't last long without the amazing mods out for it. The only thing I hate the most is that the incredibly lousy animations :inquisitive:

M2TW: My favorite Strategy/Turn-based game. I hated the numerous flaws it had, but because of the mods fixing these problems it's been great.

Source games (DOD:S, CS:S etc) - Great online games, despite of all the 9 year olds cursing and saying "suxsors, noobs, and hacks etc."

Dark Messiah: Play it from time to time. Mainly because of the unbelievable combat system. But the games really short. Hoped it was like Oblivion.

Warcraft 3: Play online Battle.net (Kodo Tag!)

I REALLY want to play World of Warcraft, I haven't bought it yet. Hear that Buring Crusades expansion came out for it. I fear that it will suck my life away, but I still want to play it...:skull:

Playing Rome, with EB .8 installed, amazing. Oblivion from time to time. Used to play M2TW hard, but have given that up until the patch comes.

Currently waiting for Vanguard Saga of Hero's to be released though. Looks like a very nice game, from what I've read.

I've finally, finally got my hands on the Julian May's "Pliocene Exile" / "Galactic Milieu" SF saga so I'm spending a fair share of my free time making my way through this, not much time left for games I'm afraid.

Like some posters above, for my strategic fix I also play the excellent Birth of the Federation but in my case with the (heavenly) Ultimate Dominion Wars 2 mod installed.

In my current game I'm leading the mighty Dominion forces... and as I've been lucky enough to have the game randomly generate my empire on the edge of the map, so far I'm bordering only the ever tedious Federation. :wall:

Our diplo relations have more or less crumbled to dust during the last 10 turns because of a contested minor race solar system into which we've both been stuffing credits, hoping to make them join *our* side. I've managed to get them into a military alliance with my empire, but right after that the Feds had built up a starship range-enhancing Starbase in the system closest to the neutral zone dividing our empires (meaning that they can now invade me) and have 3 light cruisers chillin' out there.

I didn't like that at all, so I've (strictly as a show of force!) brought my 18 attack fighters, 18 battlecruisers and a dominion battleship to hang out on our side of the trenches... :juggle2:

I'm currently waiting for their next move while stuffing some more creds down the contested minor race throat. And when the little people finally DO join me, the Dominion armada is going to power up their warp engines and cross the neutral zone right into Federation space... to teach them a lesson in obedience. :whip:

"Victory is life!!!"

The other strategy game I'm playing is the fantastic Jagged Alliance 2 with the community made 1.13 mod installed. It brings into play hundreds of new weapons and many, many game enhancing tweaks, some quite extensive.

The most fun & enjoyment I get out of the game is when I have to defend the towns that I've liberated because my mercenaries get to fight together with 20 to 30 A.I. controlled militia forces against equal number of enemies. This means some huge, yummy turn based firefights with a lot of people, weapons, options and lots of tactics involved. And that's all I ever wanted from a squad level turn based strategy! :2thumbsup:

I'm considering getting my hands on either MTW: VI in order to try out that Samurai mod for it (got sick of vanilla MTW a long time ago and most mods are made for MTW:VI which I don't own)... or Starshatter space sim / tactical capital starship combat game because it looks way too cool to ignore - a kind of Total Air War or dumbed down Falcon 4.0 of space sims!

Or maybe both of them?

Being a Star Trek nut that I am, for my action fix I'm dividing my time between Starfleet Command: Orion Pirates with the Universe at War (TNG) mod and Starfleet Command 3 with the Generations at War mod installed.

Both games are in many ways similar but each one tends to have something the other doesn't - and those mods really make both of them shine... specially GaW because vanilla SFC3 is simply put, crap.

CSI 3 dimensions of murder: short and fun, got it for free, propably finish it today...
Full Spectrum Warrior: Ten Hammers: got it two days ago, still have to get into it
F.E.A.R.: Awesome game, I only dare to play in daylight... :laugh4:
Civilization IV: Only when I got plenty of time ahead... so damn addicting...
X3 Reunion: Flying around once in a while, very relaxing game...
Medieval II: Working on giving the Scots world domination
GTR and GTL: For the occasional racing kick

Other games I still have on my HD that I still have to finish are SWAT 4, Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, LOTR Battle for Middle Earth II.

Well, these are the ones currently installed on my laptop, which is all I play...

Hitman: Blood Money: Great episode in the Hitman series, recommend it to all of you. Best graphics and physics so far too...

Medieval II: Total war: What can I say you already don't know yourselves? Keeping this mostly for PBMs and an occasional attempt at Otumba

Victoria: An Empire under the Sun: The strategy game to rule them all, IMO, playing this less and less as deadlines come closer and free time gets sparser.

Hearts of Iron 2: Doomsday: Great fun. Faster and intenser than Victoria. Also gets boring quicker, once you have established yourself firmly...

Europa Universalis III (demo): Well, there is a whole thread for this one, but it looks promising, and I enjoy toying with the text files to produce funny combinations. The Papal states getting the Calvinist reform is my favourite so far. Looking forward to the full game.

Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne: Can't beat it for atmosphere and film noir dialogue. After beating this 6 times on different machines, need to beat it again to see the good ending... Also recommend trying out the Cinema 2.0 mod. It adds some funkier visuals, although the film noire gets intermixed with Miami Vice somewhat...

Oh, it will suck your life away, but you might as well join The Collective. You will be assimilated.

P.S. you don't need the Burning Crusades expansion right away, unless you're going to race to level 60+, or you want to play one of the 2 new races (both of which are dorky, IMO). It's a lot of fun if you take your time through the early levels, and in many ways I think that's the best part of the game.

Currently playing: F.E.A.R.

O, what horror, what horror! Playing this game surely's a good way to stop your heart from beating once in a while. As soon as I hear that paranormal-like sound effect and seeing the flickering of that HUD, my brain freezes!

It's a good game, and despite I've heard people complaining about the repetitive surroundings, it actually's very effective, for seeing certain similar-looking areas might make you think twice before advancing.

The expectation one hath, 'tis too much. The tribal music when you are to engage in battle with foes sounds great, but howsabout the suspenseful music (or sound effects) that make you expect the most horrific occurrences in some climax? Not good for the heart, arrrgh! Especially when nothing happens at all.

The weapons are great.

The visuals are great (even on lower-medium settings). I'm playing it on my low-end PC with DX8 and have most settings to lo-med, with LCD resolution of 1280x1024, and it runs great. Only the autosave slows down the thing, but that's usually over very quickly.

I'm now stuck at some part. The room looks like some kind of attic, very dark, lots of wood around inside. There's a door but it's blocked off on the inside. It's some time after which Fettel tells you "she's around, her presence is strong here," which freaked me out, 'cause I'd expect to see "her" again.

I've always got a game of Imperialism II on the back burner and I just wrapped up two of my best campaigns ever. The first one I completed in 1764, the second in 1754. And that was on a difficulty level of 380, playing the weakest available faction and, of course, with my personal iron man rules ~:)

Also playing the occasional scenario of Shadow Magic, on my way to finishing the game. The last one was terrific fun, I captured eight cities in the first 20 turns or so and wrapped the whole thing up really neatly, capturing every city on the map and killing the enemy wizard on the last move of the last turn. You don't often get to do that in the AOW series because the scenarios end as soon as you fulfill the often obscure victory conditions, which is pretty annoying when there is still plenty of challenge left in the level!

The latest enthusiasm though is for the Europa Universalis Demo, which currently has me anticipating a new game more than I have in a long time.

Well, on the MacBook Pro Windows partition I have a stalled M2:TW game as the Moors - still learning, and there's something about it that doesn't grab me like MTW. Ultima Online gets booted up regularly (now in my ninth year of this MMORPG).

On the OSX partition I have a game of Baldur's Gate 2 just finishing (about the tenth time I've gone through this) Civ IV which as others have noted, is too addictive and tends to get me into trouble, and I'm trying out WoW a little - pretty landscapes, but I've never been a fan of levelling games. I had a blast with the original Settlers, which was on the Amiga, but I wasn't nearly so impressed with its sequels on the PC.

Settlers IV is the latest isn't it? The 3D version? Yes, I'd like to try that game out, but I'm not going to buy it until it becomes a budget game. Hi,
Settler III introduced the first ever 3D engine and Settlers IV drastically improved on it. The latest version, which cannot really be called a settlers game is Settlers V (Heritage of Kings). It is really a fusion of the Settlers IV with AoE with much more AoE in it than Settlers. It completely revamped almost everything focusing more on combat and losing the good old classical carrier system, now it is recourse gets exploited and gets "magically" teleported to some invisible treasury. It also included (shock, horror) cavalry for the first time ever in the series! It is, however, still an exceptional game, capable of beating most other RTS games both with the story and the graphics. It does, however, lack the extreme complex depth that the Settlers 4 and below had. If you desire to buy it then The Settlers IV Gold is pretty cheap at the moment, I got it for £7.50 off Amazon.co.uk so if you want to try it I would strongly recommend it.

The only game I have active on my computer is Battlefield 2.
I wish I had more time playing it... but alas, RL is demanding quite a lot of my spare time these days.
Hence it can take 1 or 2 weeks between each session.
The consequences is getting a little rusty BF2 skills. It usually takes 1 or 2 rounds getting creamed before I finally make some decent stats.

The upside is, the game never gets boring. The best buy I ever made.
I had a fun session this weekend on a local server (ping of 34) with relatively few players on the Wake Island 2007 map. All players averaged around 100 points and I received a couple of badges and ribbons in that one round.

MTW:VI (slightly tweaked my own personal homebrew) Nov in Early. Mucho fun turning digitized enemies into digitized enemies full of arrows.

Mechwarrior 4 You get to pilot around in a walking tank carrying more implements of destruction than you can shake a stick at turning other walking tanks into molten slag.

StrongholdA castle builder. Gotta love it. You get to build Castles. This is potentially the only drawback of MTW. I can't design what my Castles look like, and the Castles in MTW are so ugly.

I haven't played Settlers in so long I forgot which version I own. But I liked it alot.

I spend equal time tinkering with MTW tweaking and whatnot but I don't think thats considered playing the game.

I am currently playing:
Combat Missions: Afrika Korps: Very fun and quite intense at most times to very exciting and exhilarating at others.
and Barbarossa to Berlin: I've never taken such a beating from any AI like this game has administered to me before!!! DAMN Kv2's:wall:
Call of Duty 2: Playing on a realism mod is extremely more statisfying, especially when that guy you just shot in the chest will actually die instead of wasting half of your clip. If you have played the game, you will know what I mean.
FIFA '06 for the PS2: I dislike the game mechanics as they seem unrealistic and "phony" at times. The manager mode is my favorite/best part of the game. I have already gotten fired from coaching the Houston Dynamo to a horrid season(I won like 3 game out of 15, and it wasn't even mid-way through the season yet lol) to coaching Wycombe FC from League 2 in England to mid-table of League 1!! Sooo fun that manager feature is. I also fixed a tourny my team was in:laugh4: We took first place:laugh4:
M2TW: Im usually broke almost all of the time:inquisitive:. It kinda resembles my wallet, weird huh?!

Have been playing Sniper Elite (http://www.sniperelitethegame.com/). A game that requires you to have much patience. The enemy AI is brutally efficient even if set to Easy AI.

But the realism portrayed is pretty cool. It's really satisfying to line up carefully and squeeze off a shot to an enemy's head from a large distance with a sniper rifle, as you then witness the bullet's traveling with the bullet cam, plunging itself into the target, as a piece of flesh (and bone?) is ripped out of him.

Take into account the considerations one must take for a single-shot kill: gravity, distance, wind, background noise, elevation, etc. Not to mention to carefully protect the flanks/rear of your shooting position with tripwire grenades for instance, as you work alone.

Relocation is very important too: a few shots from one place and you need to move your ass fast to another spot. As said, the enemy AI is sometimes ruthlessly efficient and may just flank you sneakily when you think you're safe, deploying their own snipers to pick you off.

The tension that builds up when you get closer to your goal (for instance picking off an important officer, or destroying a convoy, or to give cover fire to an ally).

Sniper Elite is one of those games that seems so under appreciated. While it has some annoying slowish elements and some anti-climaxes, it's certainly a good game and the only one of its kind :)

Finished Shadow Hearts :balloon: 22 hours, over two months. Nice game, but by the final hours I was sick to death of the judgement ring. It was a nice idea at the start, and through much of the game, but by the end I wanted to be able to painlessly spam my characters' attacks a la nearly every other console RPG out there, rather than having to focus carefully on what was happening and time my button presses to the sweaps of the ring. It was a new kind of monotonous, and one whiuch couldn't be mitigated by my favourite tactic of reading a book while spamming attacks, and only checking the screen now and then to see if I need to heal yet. It's going to be a long time before I start the sequel; I don't want to see another judgement ring for a very long time.

Next up is Shadow of the Colossus. I need a short little game to play between now and Okami's UK launch, so starting 60 hours of Baten Kaitos or something wouldn't be sane. The game's had much adoration on this forum (waves to Fragony :gring:), and when I found a mint condition copy of the special collector's edition staring me in the face for less than the price most places are charging for the standard edition it seemed like a hint. Not sure what I'll make of it. On the one hand I like games which try to be different, on the other I'm a frog who has never liked boss battles.

What are you playing?
That's a tough question to answer for me.

For the past few days, I haven't been playing anything. But ever since I got my Wii, what games I do play have been almost exclusively of the console variety. I also finally picked up a PS2 and a couple games. But, from there, I've been spreading my time around pretty evenly. Wii Sports is still a favorite and of course, I'm still advancing however slowly thru the excellent Tomorrow's Princess, then there's Excite Truck and Red Steel. On the PS2 side, I'm playing alot of Dynasty Warriors V. I'd say those games by far make up the bulk of my playing, but it's by no means exclusive.

Right now, I feel the urge to beat the crap out some anonymous Mii- so I think it's off to Wii boxing. :smash:

Company of Heroes.

Very enjoyable game, and arguably a well-produced one too. Intense, and fast, maybe too fast. Ever since I started playing TW at some point I got off the fast clicking and hectic chaotic RTS style of C&C (though I'll probably still get the new one when it comes out).

This game has too much micromanaging: when I have two squads and the enemy one and I use one to pin them down I then send the other at their flank I expect them to use their grenades automatically (regardless of maneuvering); it's too fast and rushed (while you're building you must command battles too); etc. Basically it should be less fast overall, and those special abilities must be used automatically if it fits the situations. And units should respond more properly to their surroundings: an MG crew I deployed to cover a zone should redeploy automatically if enemies are outside their current zone.

Been looking for some mods, but haven't really found any that take care of speed and realism exactly how I'd like it. It's stupid how units fighting up-close don't die fast or how they don't engage in melee, though on the other hand it gives you time to respond with the game's chaotic nature.

They should really make more strategy/tactical games with this engine. I wouldn't even care if they'd kept reusing it, as long as they make good games therewith.

That was the last Battletech game for me, ever. The poor excuse for a plot, combined with the iffy FMVs and annoying gameplay really did it. In terms of physics, controls and game balance it was better than MW3 which was a poor effort. Alright...
I just installed a new game on my laptop.
Europa Univeralis III

My first experience with this series.
Simple but OK graphic, lots of intrigue and diplomacy.
I like the feature of getting your enemy to annex land to you as a price of peace compared to the TW variant (what you take is what you get).

Vassalage is also a great feature I didn’t find useful until I was attacked by several nations at once (being France I found myself waging war on 3 front lines) and my vassals/Allies took completely care of 1 of my front lines.

Also noticed that this is not a fast pace game and you are in danger of spending too much time in front of your screen.

MW4 did, indeed, have a plot, which ties into the BattleTech universe. Unfortunately, it was marred by bad acting. MW4: Mercenaries was VASTLY superior to MW4 in every way. No lame Live Action videos, and an open-ended game. Plus I love how you can take a Jade Falcon Nova Commander as a bondsman. Much love to the Clanners.

My most sincere apologies, I certainly meant no offense. I don't own any of the rest of the MW games and have never played the paper(?) RPG from FASA (or are they Wizards of the Coast now?) which the story came from. I do agree on the terrible acting. I cringe during parts of it. Now I just fast forward through it.

I almost picked up Mercenaries a year or so ago, it is worth getting? I did have a go with an old copy of Black Knight(?) expansion and frankly couldn't make it past the first mission. I should add worth getting in the play value sense of the word, not the it probably only costs $5.

Well, I really, really liked the intro of MW4. The acting may have not been the best but the animations of the mechs and fighting scenes I really liked.
It was one of the things which made me anticipate the MechWarrior movie that was planned at some point. I think it got dumped though.

Mercenaries is definately worth a pick up. It relies now more on the monetary gains of battle, which makes headshots all the more worthwhile (especially when you get a headshot on a Dire Wolf or a Timber Wolf, because (obviously) Clan mechs are superior to IS mechs. It also places more emphasis on a more diverse range of teammates.
And you dont even have to win the game. You can play unlimited battles in the Arena to rack up points in various weight classes.

There are even optional paths you can take, such as...
Dishonorably raid a Jade Falcon commander's battle group at night, engaging in FAR less enemies than you would normally, but with little salvage and not much to walk away with but your life.
OR...
Honorably face the same commander the day afterwards, meaning you will be completely overwhelmed by superior forces (including a few Dire Wolves), but you will walk away with great salvage AND the Jade Falcon commander as a teammate. And trust me, she's worth it.

EDIT: And don't forget to look for the Mech Packs. They were "expansions" to the MW4 games that included five Mechs in each of them. One pack for the Inner Sphere, one for the Clans. They are rare nowadays and you will most likely only find them on ebay, but they are worth it. They can be used in either MW4 or Mercenaries.

The bad acting is what I was referring to. The "campaign" was also very restrictive and annoying. I much preferred the campaign in MW2 as either Wolf or Jade Falcon. The IS did not come into MW2 at all, it was purely clan. The landscapes were haunting looking, bleak moons and isolated bases. The missions were straighrforward and without the annoying scripted sequences. There was no resource management or salvage involved, this is what imho marred MW2: Mercenaries which, despite a massive range of chassis and weapons, was flawed in many other respects (CTDs). All of the usual suspects were present in MW2, the Hellbringers (lokis), Summoners (Thors), Direwolves (Daishi), Kit Foxes (Uller), Timberwolves (Madcats) etc. The main differences were the lasers, they were star wars style rather than true laser style, and the graphics. The PPCs were also quite funny in that they're like two large low velocity fuzzy silver balls, and the gauss projectile is like one smaller polished silver ball that breaks up feebily when it hits the target. The damage these weapons do is worth the compensation however. The same heat management exists, as does the weapon grouping alpha strikes and mech bay for customizing the weapons load. You could place anything inside a mech in any position, which was somewhat unrealistic, but added to the flexibility alot. The interface was much more intuitive than the MW4 one. If you can pick up the MW2 3dfx Interactive Edition on ebay, it's definitely worth it. To run it on a modern graphics card though you'll need a Glide Wrapper program and some luck.

The first Mechcommander game was also a good one.

Took the idea from Martok and tried installing Birth of the Federation on a widescreen XP laptop. Definite issues with the standard patch (botf102e), the sound was all messed up, the games options corrupted, and the game hung as soon as a campaign was started. Searched around, found the XP patch, and fired up a Klingon campaign, no problems. A little rusty on the tech tree, but having fun abusing the Cardassians. :klingon:

Ironically, I'm now playing a Cardassian campaign. I teamed up with the Ferengi to take out the Federation, and have now teamed up with the Klingons to take out the Romulans. As a result, we are now in a three-way alliance with each other (the Fergs & Klings only have an affiliation treaty, but they're still on good terms with each other); and we will all "win" as soon as the Romulans are eliminated. As a previous boxer I was enthralled from the beginning. I could fight with my old style and it was fun to see Evander Holyfield beat Muhammed Ali using a Light-Heavy style of walking around the oponent throwing lot's of jabs. His jabs actually made a difference.

I re-installed GTA : San Andreas, TheGodfather (I never finished it, because I got bored after a while, I'm giving at a second chance now), RTW (mainly because I participate in a PBM, couldn't resist the temptation to start a single player campaign though), Call of Duty (yup, the first one, still alot of people who play MP I noticed :2thumbsup: Not that I am any good at it.), Far Cry (I never bothered to finish it because of the save game system which annoyed me) and Oblivion (never removed it, but I didn't play for several months, I had to stop playing because of real life phenomena)...

And now I see this threads in the Arena about KOTOR, KOTOR II and Morrowind... And one day I want to re-play MTW...

Finished Lords of The Rings: Tactics on my PSP. Well, not finished in the strictist sense as there are still a few missions left, but it's feeling too repetitive now I'm right near the end. While not a spectacular game it did meet my expectations: a fun enough strategy RPG which played nicely enough for the main but had some rough edges and stood firmly in the middle of the SRPG crowd, not outstanding and not bad either. Having got a month's worth of lunchhour play out of it I feel I got my £15's worth.

Wanting a change of flavour before I dive into the SRPG depths of Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth I'm now playing Cooking Mama on the DS. Yes, a game about cooking. What's wrong with that? Stop looking at me like that ...

Nah, I guess it could have been worse, like let's say a game about shopping.

' Level 1: spend 200 € on clothes you don't need '
' Level 2 : Go buy 25 pairs of shoes...'
' ...

That would be really :wall:

I started another game of Jagged Alliance 2. No idea why - I probably just wanted a squad level tactical combat game and there are none finer. Also, it's one of those games that's easy to dip into and get a lot out of a few 1-2 hours sessions, without having to commit vast amounts of time or thought to. I do have NWN2, M2TW, Civ4 and Oblivion I should be playing, but those monsters seem to have energy activation barriers that are hard to surmount when you are busy with work and other things. You really need to break your leg or something to see them through.

Surely shopping is a key feature of most strategy games and RPGs? I'm off to San Mona in JA2, partly to pay Tony the arms dealer a visit. I also like to surf the JA2 laptop, to see whether Bobby Ray has got any decent kit yet. Yes, shopping is a key feature of most games I like... well, and looting, I suppose.

I picked up Vanguard out of curiosity. It's a bit glitchy still and is a bit of a system hog- but it really looks great. If WoW was too shallow for you(:laugh4: ), you might like this game- crafting is extremely in depth. I've also been enjoying diplomatic missions which basically are card games that involve you spending points in various categories of persuasion to push the argument in your favor. The stronger an argument (card) the more points it takes to play and they also give points to your opponent to use against you. It's challenging, but probably not as complicated as I made it sound. Everything has it's own sets of equipment as well- fighting, harvesting, diplomacy, ect.

Of course, then there's the 15 or so races and about as many different classes, 3 major continents, flying mounts, ships, player owned houses and who knows what else. I don't know if Ill be able to play enough to make the subscription worthwhile- but for now it's alot of fun.

That reminds me. At a certain time, I had massive amounts of gold in Oblivion. I started to put objects in my showcases in that big house (in Skingrad?). Afterwards, I wanted to have every set of armour, to expose it, watch it. I started to pay attention on clothes. After all, it looks better to walk around in towns wearing expensive shoes, an expensive shirt etc than to walk around in some armor set. My money was disapearing and I started to loot dungeons and such to have more money to be able to buy another set of fancy armour/weapons/clothes...

Dude, you got a capitalist work ethic, in a computer game??? :laugh4:

Funnily enough after a while I couldn't be botherered selling things and just kept dumping stuff on the floor in my room in the thieves guild, which is rather like real life too I'm afraid..

What we need is a "meaning of life" mod where you can give all your gold away to the poor and find Nirvana, or an "economics" mod where a load of starving peasants loot your house, set up a commune, and bury you in the back garden...:beam:

But but but it's fun! It's a set of touch screen based mini games, much like warioware! Brilliantly unique. Makes me hungry though ...

Hehe, I only considered the game because I saw a bunch of gamers posting endless love for it on another forum. They made it sound like such fun. Hehe, it was really quite hilarious: a collection of men sat about admitting they felt like freaks buying the game and loving it. I'm the only girl I know of playing it.

Ah, now it is a long streak of EU2 and Galactic Civilisations 2.
In the former I have already, as Scotland, conquered the British Isles, Norway, bits of France and Portugal, and vassalised a few Germans, colonised some of South and Central America, the Windies, Indonesia, and North India, oh and some of West Africa...

In GalCiv2, the British Empire (renamed, edited with the Union Flag and everything) is currently doing very little, because it CTDs from time to time...

Nostalgia trip time!

I've scored me a free copy of X-Com Enemy Unknown (I had it for the playstation back in the previous millenium) and I'm really getting back into it. A little tip for those Orgahs who find themselves recruited by the men in black... never, never be the first off the Skyranger!

In other news [snip: link to underdogs removed] is a very neat little strategy game which I'm enjoying, although at £0.00 you might want to think about it before shelling out.

EDIT: no links to the Underdogs, please. The site offers for download a lot of games which are, technically speaking, pirated. Froggy.

My ownership of Okami was delayed. The shops in town had none left on release day; alas, that's not a sign that it was selling in bulk. They'd only ordered a couple of copies in. Huh. So I hit amazon, and since it was Friday night when I ordered it was obviously going to take a few days before it arrived.

This is where amphibian stupidity kicks in. Get ready ...

I still have a few colossi left to kill, and I'm enjoying that game a fair bit. But. But but but, I have this nagging craving to play a traditional console Japanese style RPG. Random turnbased battles, manga styling galore, levelling up, one of those mad Japanese plots - the whole works. It's a craving I've been fighting since I hit the last 5 hours of Shadow Hearts weeks ago.

Yes, so, with a couple of days until I get my eagerly awaited Okami, and with Shadow of the Colossus in progress and nearly completed, what do I do?

I start playing Dragon Quest VIII. :wall: A 60 - 120 hour game :wall:

I love it! :loveg: Okami sits untouched, SotC is back in its box, and somehow I've managed to play 16 hours in 8 days.

The plot is basic, a fairytale like concoction about a cursed king and princess tavelling to find the one who laid the curse on them. Yet for all that I'm enjoying it considerably; it has charm, and it's executed so it is frequently funny. The characters are full of personality, aided in good part by the excellent voice acting. The world itself is enjoyable to explore; I've spent so much time wandering about off the roads that I'm overleveled for the point of the game I'm at. The battles are neat; they're fast, no massive animations or such here to drag them out and make then dull. What's more they are big - 4 characters in your party, and up to 8 enemies at once! As you only have 4 characters total you never need to worry about unused characters falling behind. This limited number also allows each character to have more development time and personality devoted to them.

When you don't want to work at advancing the plot there's loads to do; I've found treasure hunting, alchemy (make new items out of old ones), famous monster hunting, a casino, and I know that there's a monster arena where you can pit teams of monsters you have defeated against others to win prizes.

The graphics deserve special mention; as any screenshot will reveal, this game is stunningly beautiful for a PS2 game. It looks even better in motion.

Anyone else played it?

I picked up "God Hand" for the PS2 Wednesday for $17 after reading a positive review in Play Magazine. Wow... just wow- I can barely put this down. This game plays like a Tarantino-esque homage to all of the classic beat'em-ups to have come before it. The story-line and dialog are cheesily hilarious and the combat is equally cheesy with over the top combos and outrageous moves.

You can build you own basic combos with moves you earn/purchase and then there are the "roulette" moves- my favorite of which is the 'ball smash' (yes, that's literal) and the dragon kick (which actually kicks the person you hit over the horizon :laugh4: ). Lastly is the God Hand meter, which when full and activated allows you to dole out blindingly insane beat downs on your hapless enemies. :2thumbsup:

I don't know if the game is for everyone, but for me, it was a steal at its bargain bin price.

Armed Assault...

Now I have it working reasonably reliably it is not easy... Great game play if you are into the tactical simulation army thing... Dawn of War: Dark Crusade - The strategic game is fun but loses its appeal after one campaign (the strategic AI is rather weak and the campaign needs a good bit of patching). However it is DoW's 'skirmish mode' that keeps me coming back for more. I either use the Skirmish AI mod (ver 2.20) or the DoWXP mod (ver 3.65) and a slew of custom maps to keep things fresh. DoWXP is really fantastic; it incorporates a plethora of new units, vehicles and upgrades along with altered tech levels.

The funny thing is I generally despise 'build and rush' style RTS games but Relic knows how to avoid the banal, mindless, repetitive crap that typifies the genre and concentrates on the things that make RTSes fun. Furthermore I love the look and feel of 40K universe and Relic has done a spot on job of fleshing it all out.

Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar - Arguably the best 4X style empire building game on the market right now. It certainly has the best AI I've ever seen in a PC game.

Back to HOI2 with the Kaiserreich mod. I'm going to finish this game as the German Empire, go back to HOI2 regular and finish a game as Britain, and then install Kaiserreich again, which will hopefully be out of beta stage by that time.

By the way, it's a great game, even in beta. I'd certainly recommend it. A lot of work went into that mod, and they're still pouring it in.

Finished Another Code in 5:18 with the best ending on my first go. It was neat, but needed more puzzles. It was more an interactive story than a game. Respect is due for its inventive use of the DS' features, such as reflecting the image on one screen off the other to find the solution to a puzzle. I don't regret having played it; I am definitely glad I got it quite cheaply.

I've now started Phoenix Wright 2. All together now: "Objection!!" :gring: I expect to finish this one quickly; it's the sequel to the game I got with my DS, the game which is still my favourite on that handheld.

Still plugging away at Dragon Quest, and still trying to think up a good excuse to sit in the office and play Puzzle Quest on the days when I'm in charge of the shop and not needed on the shop floor.

--Company of Heroes (again), but now I'm also modding for it to put it more to my taste. Nothing like infantry support in the form of a beautiful Firestorm artillery barrage of incendiary rockets raining down heavily for about 10 seconds long (or longer) with a great radius, as your infantry lies in wait to advance thereafter, they might even get hit by a lone rocket descending when you thought it was over already :) A true Terror weapon and it greatly damages a large area now.
(The only annoying thing about this modding is trial-and-error :dizzy: )

--Chrono Trigger again (not so much though... have played it in English, French, and now in German(!)... looks good :laugh4: and it's nice to see how those translations work out). If I could only find that converter I'd play it on the old console itself.

Well after far too long (at least two months by my reckoning), I finally have a brand-spanking new PC.....and what a joy it is. :2thumbsup:

Since I picked it up on Saturday, I've already played a fair bit of GalCiv 2, which never really did run on my old machine. I've also gotten back into MTW/VI, having started up a new Spanish campaign. In addition, I downloaded and played the Medieval 2 demo a couple times, although I did so mostly to stress-test my computer's video/graphics abilities. (I'm happy to report everything ran smoothly at max settings. :beam:)

My newest addiction, however, is SimCity 4. Egads, I've been having way too much fun building roads & highways everywhere!

Good grief, what are you doing posting outside of the Medieval themed Total War forums Martok? I thought you got a nosebleed if you left their confines!

Anyway, I am currently mostly playing my own modded version of RTW which I am writing an AAR for it. Although it's about 10 times more fun to play the game than actually knuckle down and write about it.

I also have had a few skirmishes in Dawn of War and Total Annihilation. I was playing GCII not that long ago, but I never really enjoy the campaigns much. Plus after a while it crashes and I can't be bothered to replay the last 5 turns or whatever when I have hundreds of moves to redo.

MTW is calling out to me as well. It's telling me I must continue my Crusader campaign. I must resist!

Hmm. I haven't had any problems thus far, at least not with the game's stability. I'm having a bit of difficulty remembering how on earth I get my economy going, though. (It's been a little while since I played -- and boy, does it show!)

Put Dragon Quest on hold; I've had enough for now. However good a game is, playing it for several months makes you sick of it.

I'm now playing Kororinpa on the Wii for a change of pace. It involves rolling a ball through a maze, tilting the level itself via the motion sensors in the Wiimote. It's skillful stuff, and actually quite relaxing. Best of all one of the balls has a frog in it :gring:

I'm nearing the end of the second case in Phoenix Wright 2, and still riding around on my giant rat in Puzzle Quest.

My M2TW game may go onto hold; I loaded up my save game and the AI went completely psycho on me. Now I'm stuck in loads of tedious wars and the AI just won't stop. It offers me peace and breaks it within a couple of turns, over and over. Most disappointing, considering that in my first play session the AI was mostly peaceful, limiting itself to sensible wars which were fought with large armies of good troops.

I am currently playing Freespace 2. It is a PC space-shooter, resembling the Wing Commander series, released in 1999. Though the game failed to achieve any massive commercial success, the still very active fan community (http://www.hard-light.net/) is proof of the game's quality; the source code has been released to the public by the developer, Volition, and the Source Code Project continues to improve the game. In my opinion, it is certainly amongst the best games I've ever played. I think I'm playing through the main campaign for the fourth time now; there are also numerous user-made campaigns, the Freespace 1 campaign ported to Freespace 2, and a Babylon 5 total conversion (along with prequels/demos for a few other total conversions) available.

There's a large number of games sitting on my shelf I really should play... There's Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, Homeworld, Hearts of Iron: Doomsday, Neverwinter Nights 2, Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark, I could still have more fun with Morrowind, and lots of other stuff... Then there's the games which I haven't touched for a while, but where I have a game in progress, such as Diablo II and the EB mod for RTW. I guess I should hold off of buying games for a while. Could be quite a while, considering how many I have accumulated. I've still got a load to sell off, as well...

Kororinpa has fallen beneath the joint onslaught of the frog and her boyfriend. Victory is ours. Nice game; could have used twice as many levels IMO.

I'm not starting anything else presently, and Dragon Quest needs to stay on hold until I can't hum the entire score of the world map music from memory. Phoenix Wright 2 probably won't take me much longer; I guess I shall start something fresh once that is done too.

Final Fantasy V.

I always like these stories and such, but it suffers from the typical thing those old-style RPGs usually have: repetitive annoying battles you can't avoid (unless you flee in-battle).

I agree there. I played WoW for a few months straight and, ultimately, the idiots that comprise the community turned me off of it. Additionally, the tedium of higher levels and the related boring quests were a turn off as well. I still go back occasionally and subscribe for a month at a time. I try to coordinate it with friends/relatives subscriptions, and we usually cancel again before it becomes too tedious.

It's a fun game if you don't get too wrapped up in it and get addicted. Although, I tried the RP realms to get away from the idiots- it doesn't work. The RP realms are a joke- actual RPers are few and far between. (not that I wanted to hardcore RP myself, but I hoped I would get away from the morons who spam all the public channels with Chuck Norris jokes, ect)

.........

A game I've picked up and been enjoying recently is Izuna on the DS. It's an extremely old-school dungeon crawler. You play as a ditsy teenage ninja, who offends the gods of a small village and gets everyone cursed- so, she gets forced into braving various dungeons to face the gods and get them to lift their curses.

Some of the great "old school" things I like about it:
-You will die, especially in the earlier levels- get used to it.
-When you die, you lose all items, money, talismans, ect. that you have on you and get kicked out of the dungeon and have to start over.
-The dungeons are randomly generated each time you enter them.

In general, the gameplay is very simple but also challenging and somewhat unforgiving. To cast talismans, you need to use SP points, but the less you have, the less strength your normal attacks are supposed to have. You can also apply talismans to your weapons to make them stronger, but apply more than a weapon can handle and it can break easily or even get completely destroyed.

I like it. :2thumbsup:

A game I've picked up and been enjoying recently is Izuna on the DS. I've heard of that before; it got mentioned (http://groups.google.com/group/rec.games.roguelike.misc/browse_thread/thread/700cc691e95908e9/b37922ee574bb4ef?lnk=gst&q=Izuna&rnum=1#b37922ee574bb4ef) on the rec.games.roguelike.misc newsgroup. It is not common to see a commercial roguelike.

Having finished the Freespace 2 main campaign, I continued my old Diablo 2 - Lord of Destruction game (playing a sorceress); I just finished it. It was my first playthrough. The final boss fight was really intense, but I was much more prepared for it than I was for the fight at the end of the original game, so I won without dying once (though I did die two times in the fighting just before it).

I am thinking of tackling the Neverwinter Nights: Hordes of the Underdark official campaign next time I feel like spending lots of time on a game.

Another game I've been playing lately:
Dungeon Crawl. A roguelike (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roguelike); one of the most popular in the genre, and with good reason. I am playing the Stone Soup (http://crawl-ref.sourceforge.net/) fork of the game, which improves the vanilla version (the development of which has stalled) significantly.

I enjoy the strategic AI. I'm not confident enough or committed enough to start a PBEM, but I hope to soon. The AI is still giving me problems, and I'm progressing with the learning curve with regards to terrain, leadership, supply and other modifiers.

It's not an easy game as far as the strategy goes, but t there isn't much micromanaging to do, so most of your thinking is at the strategic level.

Quite enjoyable, and the developers are very active, patches and AI tweaks occur quite regularly.
