Then don't kill me.
Well we are screwing up big time. I thought me and MRD and others had this earlier but I guess not.
Keep the faith MRD!
Orders in. Stay tuned.
NIGHT 8
They were down to four now. All of them sitting down in one of the lounge areas after the lynch of Seon. None of them wanted to be on their own now and no one was willing to let the others out of their sight. So there they were, Gene "Major Robert" Dump, Vincent Diamondeye, Thomas B_Ray and Marvin dcmort93.
Gene was the first to break the awkward silence: "So, we all know, one of us here at this table has been killing people. I'm pretty darn sure it's not me. What about you?"
He eyed Mr. Diamondeye, who picked up a guitar and replied: "Me? I'm a simple musician. You might even have heard about me, Vincent Diamondeye, the most well known voice from Locustwood to Apache Hill."
"So you were singing these beautiful tunes at night?", the major asked and Diamondeye nodded.
"I also think I have just the tune for tonight", he added and started to play while the others kept discussing:
<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="https://www.youtube.com/v/N29k5tMqslU?version=3"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="https://www.youtube.com/v/N29k5tMqslU?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="25"></object>
"Well, I'm willing to let him off the hook just for that. The music's just too good to be played by an evil soul. I, Gene "Major Robert" Dump, vouch for him." His attention turned towards another member of this quartet, a man dressed in black, with a spot of white at the front of his collar, clearly the garments of a pastor, a holy man. "So, what about you, Pastor B_Ray?"
"I'm as startled by what happened here as you are, son", Thomas replied and shook his head, "this is all very confusing."
Gene nodded. "Well, you seem legit to me, gonna vouch for you too. That leaves me to take a look at you there, Mr. dcmort93. What was your first name again?"
"Marvin. I'm Marvin, you know that", the rather nervous fella replied, "we've been talking for hours over the last couple of days and you know I was a train conductor, where I worked, what all my grandchildren do and..."
"Yea right", Gene barely managed to stop the old man in his sentence, "I remember. I vouch for you as well."
Awkward silence settled again as the other three were staring at Gene now until he noticed that he was suddenly at the center of attention. "What!?"
"You just vouched for all of us", Vincent, who was finished with his song, plainly stated, "that leaves no one else but you. You must be the killer."
"What? Me?"
"Yea, you", Marvin added, "I mean, what kind of a name is Gene "Major Robert" Dump anyway? Who'd call himsefl "Major Robert" as a nickname? What's your story?"
Gene thought for a moment and then started: "Well, I was with the army once, payment was bad and the whole combat experience kinda ruins the fun elements of the job so I quit when my tour was up and went into politics. Kept the nickname though, why not? I'm not the killer, sillies, I've tried to find them all week."
"But you never found them, at least not all of them", Marvin exclaimed, "maybe that's because you are one of them!"
"I'm not! Come on, guys", Gene shook his head and looked from one to the other for help.
Vincent just raised an eyebrow as he kept pushing: "So why have they not tried to kill you? I mean, you've been investigating and searching for clues publicly all the time. Any sane killer would have offed you long ago, unless it's you yourself!"
Gene buried his head in his hands, resignating as they suddenly heard the guitar again:
<object style="height: 390px; width: 640px"><param name="movie" value="https://www.youtube.com/v/CnG_FtaYkAg?version=3"><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"><param name="allowScriptAccess" value="always"><embed src="https://www.youtube.com/v/CnG_FtaYkAg?version=3" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" allowScriptAccess="always" width="640" height="25"></object>
One of the men had picked it up and played the tune that sent shivers down everyone's spine as they all stared into one direction now.
"You?", Gene exclaimed and Thomas B_Ray just nodded before he handed the guitar back to Vincent and slowly pulled out a gun.
"Yea, it's me", he calmly replied while attaching the silencer to the barrel of his weapon, "what are you going to do about it? I don't think anyone here will risk their life to help you, right guys?"
Both Vincent and Marvin were shaking their heads, slowly getting up and backing away from the scene. "Which leaves me and you and, given the weapon in my hand, I think the odds are in my favour." He smiled at Gene, who was still staring at him, wide eyed as if he couldn't believe what was happening. Just then the door to the room opened and both Alex Grearson and Thomas DeLaney entered the room, stopping surprised as they saw what was happening.
"Are you going to disturb me?", Thomas shot at the two but they both raised their hands defensively with DeLaney adding: "No, no, go right ahead, just try not to make any holes in my furniture."
B_Ray nodded and the next moment the gun was fired and Gene "Major Robert" Dump slumped into his chair, a dark red spot growing over his chest as he quickly breathed his last breath. No one spoke during these moments but Thomas reached into his pocket, taking out a cigar and lighting it delightfully.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
After a few moments of silence DeLaney walked over and softly pushed the dead body out of the chair to sit down himself, curiously looking at the pastor now as he asked: "So. Tell us, what was this all about?" The others approached as well and sat down as B_Ray told his story.
"A long time ago, more than forty years, me and two friends we thought we could do aynthing we wanted. We were gambling a lot and after a while we were deep in debt and our only chance was to turn to more illegal ways of obtaining funds. We robbed a bank and killed a few people, not having any moral thoughts about it but still we didn't want to do it again for the risk of being caught." He leaned back and puffed his cigar before continuing: "We decided to pay our debts and hide the rest of the money away somewhere to get it as kind of a retirement fund. We came up here, to Sesame Peak, where we hid the money in a secret room down in the basement of a deserted mountain home. Now, when we all retired, we wanted to come back to get the money but a few years ago you, Mr. DeLaney, bought the whole area and renovated the house into a hotel. There was no way we could come here unnoticed to just get the stuff and so we came up with the plan that unfolded over the last few days."
"But", Alex asked, "you lost your two comrades, doesn't that upset you?"
"Not really. They had it coming and now I don't have to share", he laughed out loud. "The only thing I kind of regret is that I had to kill again. I swore not to do that when I became a pastor but what can you do, what had to be done had to be done."
"And what about the money? Where is it?"
Thomas smiled at DeLaney and nodde: "I already retrieved it. It's in your car which I will borrow, if you don't mind. I left an appropriate sum in your office, just as in your rooms Mr. Diamondeye and Mr. dcmort93. I guess that should settle this matter and I will not hear from any of you again?"
They all nodded and B_Ray got up, walking out of the room and down the stairs while the other went out to the balcony from where they watched the killer take the car out of the garage. "I'll send someone up once I reach the village, to check on you guys. Farewell!", He shouted back, out the car's window before hitting the road and a few seconds later he was on his way down the mountain.
"Strange fella", Alex murmured and DeLaney nodded, shrugging and then taking a deep breath of the morning air. "Anyway", he exclaimed, "anyone up for a game of 'Go Fish'?"

All the others have, unfortunately, lost the game. I had fun hosting this and I really hope you guys had fun playing. Inactivity was a bit strong in the end of which I am not sure why. It was my first game so I'm pretty sure I made quite a few mistakes, some I already know, some others I don't. Feel free to comment on the game and please give me any feedback you have, positive or negative. I'm willing to learn
That said: Congratulations to all the winners! Well played!
(I'll comment on a few aspects tomorrow or Sunday. It's pretty late here.)
Well played winner dudes, congrats.
Thanks for the game TLD, though I must admit I did kinda lose track. Hard to keep motivated to pay attention for 15 phases when you die in the first... I'll certainly be signing up for your next game though. :2thumbsup:
Well played, I had my suspicions about B_Ray's supposed Confession ability, which never seemed to be coming. But then again, I didn't act in time. Not much I could do to save myself from the lynch, especially when I didn't check in on time, between voting and being voted for.
MRD had a really good game, gathering the network and all the information, pity that too much information actually caused a few mislynches, but it was close.
Really enjoyed the game, Thanks TLD!
I honestly thought we was going to win this, but I guess not!
Well played all. Not bad overall, another game as townie on me stats!
Stats mean nothing. Nothing I tells ya!
Hey, I'm #4 on the list for playing the most as town or something, 24 out of 25 games before you add in this game and the NetherWorld game.
well my gut told me to block B_Ray but my mind said otherwise. Well played everyone, and I'm glad I actually won one finally
So, now that this is over, and classical_hero has pulled out, does this mean that I can officially begin sign-ups for my game (and get the thread moved to the main Gameroom)?
For reference: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showt...ting-Queue-5.0
Thanks! :2thumbsup:
Also, I wish I'd signed up for this one, looks like it was a good game. Not sure why I didn't, honestly.
:cool3: Yay! This was my first game as mafia, and I'm thrilled to have actually won. It's also the first game I've survived. Thank you for hosting, TLD! I particularly liked your write-ups and the fact that every player had at least one ability. I like reveals upon death as well. :beam:
I really thought I would be the first mafioso to go down, reason being that I managed to draw heat from a couple players early on in the game. But autolycus's early lynch and the developing joint network between town and neutrals inspired me to take a chance and reveal to MRD, who we had agreed not to attack for a while. My personal goal was real, but my "confession" ability was not. I told MRD that I had a passive ability, which would be activated if I was killed at night, revealing the role of my killer in the write-up. I suggested he not share that info with anyone else, since getting killed at night was the only useful thing I could do (for the town). He came up with Confession ability as a bait to hopefully get me attacked the following night, and reveal a mafioso.
My main strategy was to keep MRD alive and try to earn his trust any way I could, without being too toady about it. He stood out as a key town player early on, and seemed to be at the center of information exchange. As big a target as he was, we eventually decided that it might ultimately work out best if we left him alive (and I think we had tried killing him one night, but ended up getting bus-driven). Personally, I hoped that the longer MRD lived, the less suspicious it would make him of me, and eventually that it might make players turn on him, wondering why such an outspoken player hadn't died yet.
And dcmort, yeah, I figured that if you role-blocked me on the last night, it would all be over for the mafia. :shocked3: But either way, you and DE would have won. Well played on your part especially, mort. Diamondeye, were you really a Princess role? I didn't find out what that was until the last night round.
This fail was all me.
This was my dilemma:
- Robbie claiming nuetral but my scan showing otherwise
- The "confession" ability did not make B-Ray a target, which indicated he may be mafia.
I'm typically not a fan of pro-town networks, and now I have a new reason not to be. With a little communication and record keeping on the part of certain individuals, I could have confirmed that Robbies scan was compromised. But once we lynched him and saw that he was town it created an issue with Seon. Really, it should have confirmed Seons innocence that there was in fact a bus driver, but all this was speculation because no one was talking. I think I contradicted myself in a couple of decisions. Basically, a bunch of people working together and then for a couple of turns people aren't around, no one is talking and things start to go BLAH.
I really should have gone after B-Ray, but I simply could not ignore the scan thing. I also thought possibly B-Ray had been targeted by mafia for the "confession" but bus driven, and I really needed some help determining what happened that round so I could confirm or debunk it. Bascially, I created a power that didnt exist to make B-Ray a target and when he was not targeted it should have set of warning bells, but alas no one was talking to me about what happened that round. This is why I never delete game PMs, recieved or sent, until the game is over.
Our momentum was great but in the end I sponsored too many bogus lynches. In this instance, it wasn't misinformation that killed us, it was lack of information and complacency. I hope the people who claimed to me in private and whom I publicly revealed and ultimately lynched can forgive me for my betrayal.
GG B-RAY
I HAT U VEERY MUCH
I was dead sure it was B-Ray after he asked me about my suspects in private before the night phase was over, but I just played along and tried to make myself less of a target. I would have snap-lynched him today if the game had still be going.
But, I'm not too sad about the way things turned out. Thanks for hosting, TLD! And well played everyone, especially the mafioso :beam:
So, a few things from my side, first: The Role PMs
Our not-so-lucky town:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
I liked the role. He had to keep people alive and his only means to do so was to shift them around at night. It was surely one of the harder personal goals, during the concept phase it had once been 5 townies to kee alive but I lowered it somewhat. At the point where only B_Ray was left of the Mafia there were still enough townies alive for Seon to fulfill this goal, had they lynched B_Ray then but, alas, it was not to be.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Another personal goal that was rather hard to accomplish especially since it included the necessity to stay alive until all scums were dead. Well we all know classical fell slightly short of that but someone has to die in the early rounds and it's usually a townie.
The investigation was "flawed" in that it needed the collaboration with another role that we'll go right into:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
The other investigator. Basically the investigator pair was down during the first two phases but had they survived they would have to work together to get confirmed results on classical's scans.
The personal goal is the first in a series that made a decision necessary, between furthering your victory condition or working on your personal goal. Since JHT could only attempt one action each night he had to decide to either help the cop or look for the person with OCD to cure them. We'll come to our friend with OCD later.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Tratorix did stay alive for quite a while but not until where his ability would have really mattered. It was a strong one shot ability that basically only made sense to use later on, this was due to the fact that I couldn't overload the town with strong abilities.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Another limited use ability that needed careful use. In the end it cost the town it's doctor, I'll comment on that later.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Warman did an exceptional job this time around in staying alive since I understand he usually goes down very early. Well, he made good use of it and fell oh so short of fulfilling his personal goal. Again, I'll comment on that fateful night 2 later.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Well, a basic doctor, not much there is to say about him. His personal goal was not that hard I think but in the end he died too early to fulfill it.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Yeah, definitely a hard personal goal as he would have to have the princess eliminated and the roleblocker who ended up working for the town (which I did foresee) even though he could have worked with the scums as well. It was also one of the personal goal where they had to choose between reaching that goal and furthering their victory condition. MRD did a great job this game I think but in the end he trusted the wrong people or, rather, trusted the wrong roles. I told you they'd have cover roles
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Captain Blackadder had a good game going. He used his one shot investiagtion right on the mark and nailed autolycus. He then killed Visorslash who he probably thought was scummy but I'll comment on that night later.
He used his protection later but his target was not attacked. That would have left me in a tight spot to determine whether his personal goal was actually fulfilled, since the PM only stated he needed to use the ability succesfully. I dodged that bullet though, since with the victory condition lost the personal goal was meaningless.
The beloved neutrals:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
One of my favourite roles, really. I liked the idea of a guy killing everyone whose name started with a J. Maybe I should have made him a serial killer but in the end I decided this way was more balanced. His personal goal would have put him at odds with both factions so he had to decide on how hard he should focus on it.
I'm also a bit sorry because due to a naming mistake on my part there were more roles with names of "j" than I had planned but since he got killed anyway it didn't matter later on.
Also, if JHT had found him and cured him, his personal goal would have changed to keep JHT alive. He would have remained neutral though.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
One of the "traps". I had one for the town and one for the mafia among the neutrals. Had the scums attacked robbie at night he would have survived the first attempt and had a chance of revealing his attacker. He would have also turned town and be another target on the list. Well, didn't happen, I still liked the role though.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
During conception another one of my favourite roles but it didn't work out the way I hoped. The personal goal could have been extremely hard but in the end no one ever voiced a negative opinion about the country songs in the writeups which is kinda disappointing. I kinda liked most of them but I know country's not for all people ^^ - His ability was the trap for the town, they didn't lynch him, so they also dodged that bullet.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Wel I hoped at least the comedian would say something negative about the musician's muisc but he never did. These two should be at odds with the comedian having to get only one other character killed but not knowing who it was while the musician could potentially have several targets with the advantage of knowing who they were. Well it never really played out. Also both of them had an ability to help them stay alive.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Another favourite role of mine and dcmort did a really good job I think. In the end he blocked the wrong person, although only from town perspective. He just had to stay alive and that worked out pretty well
Another personal goal that would have put him at odds with both factions and he ended up not really pursuing it.
Our victorious Mafia:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Surprise, surprise! I don't think his partners ever knew that he was an usurper. I tried to design all the mafia's personal goals so they had to choose between helping their team and victory condition or advancing their personal goal. He never used his ability just as I predicted he was probably waiting to see how well the game would develop for the Mafia. In the end he died as the first of the scums thus making it all irrelevant.
He only killed once and even that was a bit controversial, I'll get to that later.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Our second Mafioso and he was the one who ended up doing most of the killing. His undercover murder was an ability that would probably work better in a large game where the town has more writeups to analyse and the Mafia should be more careful not to reveal themselves. He never used it, killing everyone via poison.
His revival ability and personal goal meant to be sure to fulfill it he would have to use it rather early and probably on a town player. If that succeeded he would not have had it at hand later when he needed it and he ended up dying before he could ever use it.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Our last and surviving Mafioso. Good game, B_Ray! He had a very good cover role I think but my reasong is, if I'm going to give them a cover role I'll make it good, otherwise it's not a cover role at all. He ended up sending in kill orders in an early round (night 2) because of inactivity inside the Mafia. The others could take the kill and I decided not to count this kill against his personal goal, because I also didn't want to lose the mechanic of his goal so early, I counted the kill as autolycus' kill.
He later lost his personal goal anyway when khaan died and B_Ray needed to do the killing.
- I didn't really think it wise to try to off the nuetrals to reach my goal, plus it would be a total jerk-face move after the help DCmort was giving.
- Considering all the bad lynched at the end, I think DEs ability would have helped us had we lynched him and now I regret not doing so haha
- I misread my role PM and thought I could lynch block indefintely, but at the cost of them knowing it iwas the politician. A lynch block doesn't really help the town unless the blocker knows for a fact that the person is innocent, and with my victim I was about 80% sure. Had I known I only got one shot, I would have CLAIMED right after I did it, it may have resulted in people trusting me a little more, but I was afraid I would be a constant target if I admitted it, and even more so if it turned out I saved a mafia. I tried to use it again to save Traitorix, which explains my behavior that round, and TLD was like "um no"
- I created a cover role for a cover role for a mafia. Brilliant. Yeah, I have trust issues. And here I was thinking the last killer was nuetral.
Well it was all in your role PM although I think one of the things I need to do better next time is wording of the role PMs. There was obviously some confusion about these.
Yet your victory condition was to kill all the Mafioso. The game would have ended if there were none of them left
I said it to TLD before and in the Dead Thread, but I'd just like to repeat that I loved the role I had (Joel the OCD Factory Owner). Great idea TLD. Also, well played to everybody, particularly the mafia of course .
One thing that struck me as odd as why didn't the town lynch known neutrals. That would have helped in the cause as we eventually saw. So next time we should go after neutralss, no matter how potentially useful they might be, since they are not always useful for the town, as was the case of him blocking the town's cop on the first night, that is very much a scum move since it does not help the town. Overall I do have to say this was a good game, just frustrating how I came to meet my end in this one.
btw, here:s the Mafia QT: http://quicktopic.com/46/H/SqtQb9XCpxLPD and the Dead QT: http://quicktopic.com/46/H/BWkHfJ4SMiY
Well I don't think you can call that a scummy move, rather an unlucky move. dcmort was trying to play for the town all game but N1 targets are always rather blind shots. This leads me to the last part of my thoughts:
1) I think the town relied too much on their abilities. There were so many that it got confusing and I did foresee and to some extent want that. You guys didn't follow regular scumhunting anymore. B_Ray got attention for being scummy early in the game but nobody followed it up, rather believing the MRD-network's conclusions. Analysing what someone posts in thread should not be neglected I think, even if you have some powerful abilities at your disposal.
2) You guys didn't really analyse the writeups methinks. I'm curious if anyone has discovered the subtle hints I have left in quite a few of them but I won't tell what they were  There was one night where it wasn't as subtle though: On Night 4, when Visor died, right after Captain Blackadder got autolycus lynched on his scan result, dcmort blocked khaan, who was doing the Mafia kill, targetting dcmort himself.
The kill writeup was different in several aspects:
1) The killer used a non-silenced gun, which was different from all the other kills before
2) more importantly: No Old-Man-Poem!
Who killed Visorslash? That was Captain Blackadder, with his one shot vig kill
The next day no one noticed the differences in the writeup and even Blackadder himself didn't speak up about the fact that it was him who killed Visorslash. You could have nailed khaan there, a round earlier with actual evidence
3) The fateful night 2, where Johhog, the doctor, died:
This was an interesting nightphase for me. I got all the orders in and it looked like this:
Kill on MRD (autolycus)
Doctor Protection on MRD (Johhog)
Bodyguard Protection on MRD (Warman)
Busdrive MRD with Johhog (Seon)
Also Ishmael scanned for Warmans name that night
So I went into doing the writeup with a whole lot of actions around this group of people and since I had decided that anything that happened to the person who would eventually die would somehow show in the writeup they all had their part.
Now, the doctor's protection was invalid after the busdrive, because the doctor cannot protect himself.
The bodyguard's protection was valid so Warman would have taken the bullet instead of Johhog, thus fulfilling his personal goal of either dying instead of the cop or the doctor and the doctor would have still been alive.
I start writing this writeup around 10:30 because I always tried to be ready as close to 11 as possible to give the next phase enough time. I had the whole writeup finished and it looked like this:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
BUT... at 10:59 I got a PM from Nightbringer that he wanted to protect/block Warman. You know the rest
I think that's about it:
Again, congrats to all the winners, esp Diamodeye and his total victory, even though it got a lot easier for him than I thought it would be
Thanks to everyone for playing and a special thanks to Pizza for help with the setup!
Damn you Blackadder. :PQuote:
Who killed Visorslash? That was Captain Blackadder, with his one shot vig kill
Thanks for the game TLD.
Blackadder, the only time I'm scum is if I act completely townie. If you don't suspect me, I'm scum. :P
B Ray: I actually really like the choice of JHT. :brood:
Writes B Ray in huge letters and thick black marker in his "Book of mafia players against whom I absolutely must get bloody and unproportionate revenge"
dang I got really lucky on that khaan block
Did you folks have fun? The setup wasn't my idea but I did check it for balance, suggested a couple tweaks iirc.
I certainly did. I really like the fact that everyone had a unique role and personal goal, giving everyone something to do or consider each round beyond the basic lynch votes and night kills.
I had fun but didn't like the pressure of being considered "in charge" so to speak. It actually really sucked.
