15-year old student from theNetherhaxNetherlands. Also a multi-instrumentalist folk musician, playing the bagpipes, squeezebox, harmonica, tin whistle and bodhrán.
I ran across EB once while playing RTR: PE, and I stuck with it afterwards.
...To try to change the course of history
I'm chemistry student, from faculty of science... and I played Koinnon Hellenon campaign to protect Athens and Syracousai, hoping to pump out more Philoshopers and Scientists, and make a better Hellenic wolrd...
Sadly, the Romans still took the Syracuse somewhere in 68 BC, as my garrison of 8 hoplitai haploi, one toxotai, and one puppet general (I use type 3 Gov on them), killed by a horde full of Roman legionaires... (my fault to let the Romans fill the western wolrd with Her Red Armies...) ... I just wonder, does Archimides fought the Romans as Hoplite and still get killed? or does he killed as he draws his last math problems? (I bet the Romans are poor at math)

I started playing Real time stategy games when i was 10 or 11, first command and conquer then age of empires. As I was and still am interested in history I've got more and more involved in modding. Now I'm working on a mod for Aoe3^^. some of my friends already suggested Rome Total war to me but I realy hated the omnipresent concentration on Rome(ok, it's the name of the game dugh) and several desine issues(and Arcani, depiction of "barbarians" ... of course) this prevented my from getting a copy. Then i swaped some game for MTW2. I liked it tho it ran utterly slow on my PC. This led me to eventually buy RTW AFTER! i found EB. since then I try to play a turn a day, and I'm shure that that was one of my best downloads^^.
26 yr-old from Germany, Studying mathematics/physics (focus on optimization, operations research) in Marburg/Germany, oh, and being hot too :egypt: I've been become very interested in history when I first discovered Age of Empires 1 in 1997(?). I even planned to study history but then changed my mind to mathematics.
Favorite period of time was ancient egypt and greece, Rome:Total War really got me into the post-Diadochi-Era. I prefer the eastern kingdoms (Seleucids, Baktria etc) prior to Rome though. Basically my interest in history reduces the later we get... I really dont like the renaissance for example... so I'm also not so interested in TW:Empires (yet).

EDIT: I just realized that I drunk Smirnoff Ice for the first time yesterday <_<..and I didn't even know.
True, but those are preferenses. Plus, I didn't say Smirnoff Ice is my favorite, I said it's my second favorite drink. I don't even compare them to be honest:clown:

well, at least you're all not whiskey fans...half my family loves them, the other half teatotals:clown:
I be on the teatotalling side.
How could one not love Whisk(e)y?! The reason why humanity is deeply in Scotland's/Ireland's dept. :beam: Also great drinks: beer (preferably Czech) and red wine.
Give humanity these three things and get rid of war and you basically have your utopia.
Well after reading all these posts I am the third oldest here at 36, and the only one from tiny Malta, a small island the size of fly shit on the map in the centre of the Roman pool. Married with 3 kids I have been playing games for a long time now, Amiga, PS1 and PS2, and now my dearer PC. My interest in warfare and ancient history in general makes me better understand the present. I work in a Power Station, a few miles away from an ancient temple in ruins dedicated to Juno, used by Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans, destroyed by the Vandals.
Cheers.
Isn't the word teetotal? I believe teatotal would be someone like me, averaging 10-12 cups of tea a day.:laugh4:
Bah, I don't really like Scotch. I do love wine, though. It's my most favorite alcoholic drink, deffinately. Red one, that is. With a rich, aged taste and smell. Spanish are one of my favorites, with Italian and Greek ones following behind closely.

P.S.: Happy birthday, johnhughthom! :birthday2:
Regarding a - well, everyone stupid enough to endanger himself and others by driving drunk is no big loss for humanity in my opinion.
Regarding b - I did not mean any offence. The "how could one not love whisk(e)y" of course was meant on an "aesthetical" level, apart from religious (or other) conviction.
@Maion: I actually never drank any Greek wine. Talking about Greek wine: I would like to try the ancient Greek way of drinking wine some time. 2/3 wine and 1/3 sea water, wasn't it?
My favourite kind of red wines are Cabernet and Zinfandel. There are quite some good of those coming from the New World (especially Chile and California).
I am a high-school teacher in my early thirties. I teach history and coach basketball on America's largest Indian Reservation. My childhood fascination with war emerged into a more academic study of history by the time I was 12 or so. I was a D student in high school (with the exception of social studies and debate) but a perfect ACT score ensured me a slot in my state's university system. In high school I smelled like piss and dressed in rags because I was a typical welfare brat whose mom spent the check on drugs. I was unpopular, except that me sheer size (6'8") meant that I was a useful talent on the basketball court. My black market connections allowed me to become popular by throwing parties. In college I continued to throw parties, and I made extra money by writing papers for rich kids. I planned on going to law school, but my grades suffered because of my excessive social life. Ultimately, the only classes that could get me up in the morning were history classes. I graduated with a BA in 2001. My postgraduate career included stints in the military, Law enforcement, and graduate school.
Today I teach history in one of the worst high schools in America. We are burdened with a 66% dropout rate and high levels of pregnancy, suicide, substance abuse (huffing) and gang violence. The cultural and geographic isolation (2 hours drive to any town) means that most teachers and administrators only last a year at this school (80% staff turnover). This is my third year. The region is desperately poor and is primarily composed of high, cold desert. Only 2% of my students can be expected to graduate from college. Hopefully I can teach my students enough about the world in general that they will at least be able to make informed decisions about our country's future. Education saved me from a life of poverty, and I hope that it can do the same for some of my own students.
I have a wife and an adorable daughter who does not smell like piss. I also coach one Arizona's top rated high school basketball teams, and if I can keep all of my players eligible, we might become the first public school in more than a decade to win a championship (typically only private schools can win this). Since I live in an isolated environment, I have plenty of free time to play elaborate video games, and EB is definitely one of my favorites. I still study history, and even with a degree in the topic I have learned a lot from EB (about Baktria/Parthia). I guess that I am the typical EB player...

Hi to all!I'm 27 years old and just a plain old greek.I actually live and work in Sparta though I grew up in Athens. And no,it's not a joke...I just recently began a 2 year long intership program in invasive radiology.I'm a doctor. After that I'm going back to Pireus to complete the final 3 years of my intership.I speak english and german apart from greek.Life as an intern in a country hospital really, really sucks.EB is one of the fun things I can do in my precious spare time.I'm engaged. We'll get married in about 8 months. As every abled greek man does,I also spent a year in the army.Charming!I got sucked into Total War when Shogun popped up.And yes,as a uni student I played ol' Shoggie while dead drunk at the break of dawn after parties.I will never be able to complete the Takeda VH/VH campaign.I also would like to express my deepest and warmest gratitude to the EB team for the best PC game ever.Especially for the AS...Beautiful!Gleemonex now has my undying admiration for attending the works of Richard Feynman. As for Maion,we're both greeks,we all know that we drink ourselves to death on every possible occasion. It's kind of an inner-circle secret.I really hope you all enjoy your student years! That's all for now...
Sorry, double post see the one underneath:sweatdrop:

I'm german, 18, and stuying geography.
My interest in EB is mainly caused by the wonderful complexity and details the team brought in to create a far more immersive and atmospheric RTW experience.
Of course a "hobby" interest in history etc. also was a reason (or perhaps even mingles with the "complexity" reason), but actually I want a game to be fun playing and not so much to be a history book.
EB just managed to merge both disciplines perfectly: Historical accuracy and a impressive game mechanics.
But I also would play every and all kind of fantasy mod for RTW if they managed to bring the same level of detail to work as EB does, but I never encountered any mod reaching this niveau. I don't care if I fight humans, elves, space marines or whales, as long as the background history and assets seem plausible and detailed, I'm in :) .
Greek wine is known for it's aftertaste and richness, just like the rest of the wines produced in Mediterranean countries. Another good type of Greek wine is the Mavrodafne (or Mabrodaphne, in EB hellenic style :-P), which is a deep-red and sweet wine drunk only warm, produced in Patras.
As for the ancient Greek way of drinking wine, it's indeed 1/3 to 2/3, but just normal water:clown: I drink wine like this sometimes, though I prefer to enjoy it with a nice meal consisting of meat pr cheese, the types of which again depend on the type of wine you drink. For example, parmezana(sp?) cheese goes very nicely with strong wines, like the Spanish ones I forementioned. Of course, bread is a good addition as well.
Spanakoryzo: Ah, a fellow Greek! Well, though I don't drink myself to death (not too often, that is:clown:), I do enjoy the benefits of 'liquid courage' as I like to call it. You tend to dance the very best zeibekika when you're drunk, that's a known and proven fact:laugh4:

alcohol increases one's ability to play EB...
EB is best played after a tiresome day of Study and Chemistry Experiments.... Alongside with dinners, full of noodles and Ice Cofee... :quiet: yummy...
Btw, alcohol will supress your nerve system... useful if you are present on the battlefield with a xyxton, kopis, and You need to command a large army of poor militiamen... at least they got frightned with your speech (bruup bruup bruup hoekk... (vomitting))...
I couldn't imagine somebody with the name Cute Wolf drinking beer anyway.:clown:
I don't like beer, they are bitter, and tasted weird in my mouth... I prefer wine or vodka though... they are sweet:yes:
I drink them only on holidays... or saturdays.. I ussualy fall asleep after drink them... And will be late for lectures:laugh4::laugh4::laugh4: My nerve system is too sensitive to alcohols
I only see one post at a time(Don't know how to change it), so I got bored of reading them all.
I did read the first couple and the last couple. Well, to go on, I'm 20 years young, I live in Texas, America and go to college here. College takes up most of my day time and then working at a freakin' Subway takes up my nights. So, usually I only have 1-3 hours to play EB a day, just because I sacrifice my much needed sleep. With some 211 Steel Reserves and some cigarettes, EB is so much more fun!
That's how my nights go when I play EB and the only other games I play are anywhere from Total War games, J-RPGs and my favorite PS2 game of all time... Romance of the Three Kingdoms! OH! I can't believe I almost forgot, I also work on the mod that I'm part of, it's called Rise of the Nations: Prelude to War. Long title right? I also have friends in many foreign countries that I talk to. That's about it for my boring lifestyle onto the next boring life story...
I'm a british, tea loving, beer guzzling, game-a-holic and in my spare time away from EB and X-box 360; I am studying Aerospace Engineering. I need to sort out my priorities! I put tea before Beer! And both of them before EB!
I'm 24, and a South African. I have ancestral heritage in most of Northern Europe but mainly Norway, France and Wales. I am a research psychologist which is basically a nice kind of social engineer. I play EB because how can one not? I have an interest in history because I have an interest in people.
I'm surprised that there are only two Africans posting (me and Majd il-Romani), are there any others out there? And women?
I want to do a PhD. on the value of gaming for identity formation and social relations, but I really want the methodology to be a self-narrative and to be sponsored the mother-machine to play, I mean collect data.
@ Irishmafia2020, I hear you on the rather dire circumstances. I am currently doing health research/epidemiology/interventionist psychology in an area where HIV prevalence among people aged 25-35 is 49%. Unemployment is close to 80% overall, though highest in young men. Good thing they've got me.
By the way, I drink water, and occaisionally milk.
Actually, I'm just curious, how many of you prefers to play EB while eat or drink something?... I just remember that morning time speech... :furious3:
A Battle is never an easy thing to face, especially before breakfast... never mind... time to feast after we finished up these dogs...:furious3:
Eating something when playing EB is great... Unless you look into amassed hordes of Gaesatae or Tindalote... (I force them to wear loincloths, when I play EB in front of girls or kids)... The Skadugangonez is still modest when naked... looks unclear because their black pitch!!! :laugh4:
I'm 21, German, student of media computer science in Dresden (in the east of Germany).
Since childhood I've been fascinated by the ancient times, especially the Romans and computer games. Finding EB, thus, was just a matter of time.
Reading all these nordic replies renews my wish to start learning Finnish. Who knows, I might go and work in Finland someday.
Oh, and I don't drink alcohol at all.
I am 19 years old and live in Sweden. Currently I'm studying engineering in linköping. But I dont really like it - so I will change to something different next year. Maybe to something about biology.
When I don't play EB I pretty much do everything you expected from a student. I like party, films, art and most of all music.:egypt:
I was about to say it's nice to have another engineer, but seeing as your gonna change, I shall be alone once more. I've noticed a lot of people who play are students. Or are the students just trying to do anything to avoid doing their work while most others feel threatened by the average age of about 19-21!:idea2:
quick answer is greeks
but that not to say that's bad as we're the ones that are normally the interesting ones unless you talk about something no one knows what your going on about and you get a few Dodgy looks :inquisitive::inquisitive:
the people I think play EB are gaming or/and historical fans I think that the hard-core gaming fans would need a interest in history for them to stay around for more than 3 months
ages 14 - 40 there will be old one's but I think it a very small percent but 16 - 40 for the majority
Almost nineteen, a preacher's kid from the US of A. A lifelong military history fan, I got into the TW series with Medieval, bought Rome. Played Rome until nauseated with the inaccuracies, then downloaded EB 1.0.

Always been a Humanties geek i guess the parents raised me on social issues politics and history.
Left Derry at 7 but go there quite regularly. When work calls me. I love Britain and Ireland. Therefore Casse are my favs followed by the other Celtic factions.
I once Killed a Crow. pissed in a small kids drink(i was also small) and beat up a bloke till he was blind in one eye. He was a thug and i was defending myself.
I also once saved a woman from getting raped.
I guess that balances it out a wee bit.
I'm a 22 year old American (Mostly German, Scandinavian, with just a pinch of Native American) microbiologist working at the NIH. The medical and biological sciences appear to be well represented on this thread. Always been interested in RTS, mostly Starcraft and Age of Empire Series. Really enjoy a good book, recently been reading Jared Diamonds works on society and Harry Turtledove's alternate history novels. Got into TW series through my cousin introducing me to MTW. Bought RTW but was disappointed. I enjoy games that break genera standards; SimCity, The Sims, Portal, Spore, Mirror's Edge. Stumbled across the EB forums here in the summer of 2005, downloaded .72 in January 2006 and been addicted ever since. And that is the story of how I found EB.
Is you father orange, or green? ;)

You need to eat...Quote:
meh ... what's the point... who needs to eat when you can play EB
Try to play EB 3 days without eat anything...:idea2:
It's maybe weird, but for me, the EB music works great as appetizers...:smitten:
cheers for everyone creating the EB music...:grin::grin: maybe you can get some donations, playing these eat-inducing music in restaurants...:idea2:

swiss beer's the best anyway
25 yo Bulgarian. Ibrahim, 10 friends is a lot. I have half as much and I am a very happy man. There are lots of people I can drink a beer with, but very few I call friends. Why aren't Greek guys praising ouzo? I love that drink, it is excellent for a hot summer evening.Crystallized of course. And here is a recepy: take a melon, inject it with ouzo, freeze it and than enjoy? Anyway I drink anything. In my university years I even drank homemade vodka. I am surprised I am still alive.
I study political science.
Ouzo is pretty good, yes.
I just realised that I had been lurking for a really long time, even after creating an account. been lurking here since..........sometime early last year, but only created an account a few weeks ago.
i'm a 15 year old from Singapore (I think I'm the only one from that region), came across EB when I was searching for a RTW mod that had a map that wasn't cut off at Persia.
I'm particularly interested in History, oh everyone here is, but I got interested in history after I got RTW.
Tsing dao's chinese beer, opened by germans leik more than a hundred years ago
Hey that's our way of colonisation XD If Empires Total war had a simmilar Government system as EB Germans would build a brewery instead of Provisorial Military Government^^
Ze goffernment isst in ze brauerai :germany:. LOL Its a great way to throw off people who want to overthrow the "colonial oppressors", after all, who would look for the military governor inside the brewery (except a German, of course).:wiseguy:
Actually, Ouzo is not very good for your health. That's basically because it turns white when mixed with water, which isn't good. On the other hand, I do sometimes drink Souma, which is the Parian equivalent of Tsipouro. Tsipouro closely resembles Ouzo in smell and taste, with some differences, mainly regional ones. Raki is also a good drink here in Crete. But Ouzo... Nah. Just for guys with no knowledge who have seen Zorbas the Greek or visited Greece in some goat village once in their lives:laugh4:

you forgot the under 20 years old students... only minor payments, or no payments at all :furious3::furious3:Quote:
mmmmmm..... teachers. Banker's hours, summers, holidays, and weekends off. The time off almost balances out the low pay...
I have visited Greece on several occasions but it wasn't the first time I tried ouzo. We have mastika in Bulgaria which is very close to ouzo. What is raki, Maion? We have rakiya here, which is good, but the variety is broad. It coukd be made of rape, apricot or plumps. And what alcohol IS good for your health? Wine of course, but not in the quantities that make it fun. Don't drink often and you should be ok. Cheers ~
I see, that's interesting. About my last comment, I was just kidding of course:laugh4: Anyway, here take a look about Raki (called Tsikoudia here in Crete): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsikoudia

Hm . . . I see I'm the only (almost) attorney. 24 year old Puerto-Rican/American living in the arctic tundra we call Illinois until I finish law school in May and I get to go back to warm, sunny Los Angeles. I'm trying to angle myself into urban planning, but that's in the air. I've been playing RTS since AOE II. Became fascinated with history in my teens and have since been a macro-history buff. I've never cared for dates or people, but trends and huge movements. Studied Sociology in college and read a lot of military history, philosophy, and political treatises in my spare time.
