It must surely be one of them!” Tlacalael simply shook his head and gestured down to the blood-stained altar. Chaotix turned to the emperor and prostrated himself before him. “My emperor, lord, please spare me! I am a lowly individual, not worthy of the honor of sacrifice. Please, convince your honored servant to alter this course!”
“No. The course is set. Lay down on the altar, and accept the caress of the divine.” With the final order from the Emperor, Chaotix laid down on the altar, chest bared to the stone roof. Tlacalael plunged the ceremonial knife down, and quickly peeled the chest apart to find the beating heart.
“My friends,” Tlacalael addressed us, holding the beating heart aloft. “May the gods accept our sacrifice of blood and flesh. We offer our blood so that they might see our dedication. We pray that it is pleasing to them.” With a deep breath, the High Priest set the heart down, and simply gestured to the hallways in the directions of the quarters to indicate we were finished.
IT IS NOW NIGHT THREE. PLEASE SEND IN ORDERS. 24 HOURS AS USUAL.

My apologies to everyone. Weekends are generally really bad for me and posting (family, etc.), but this weekend we had a winter storm that knocked out my internet, phone and TV for almost the entire weekend. Jarema’s quarters were shared with two other members of the priesthood. With only two mats, Jarema slumped himself against the wall, eventually falling asleep with his head buried in his knees. None of the three heard the slight rustle of the curtain to their room being drawn back. A tall, lean man entered, bearing a curved knife in his right hand. He stalked forward, attempting to carefully maneuver the two sleeping in the middle of the floor. He stepped over the first, peering back to make sure he didn’t accidentally wake him. He turned back to Jarema, and froze when he heard a shifting behind him. The man sleeping behind him had rolled over in his sleep and latched onto the intruder’s rear leg.
With a slight panic, the man tried to gently tug his leg out of the grasp, but the dreaming nuisance was having none of it. He gave a harder tug, but still couldn’t free himself. With a small, exasperated sigh, he shook his head. He finally yanked as hard as he could. Unfortunately, it was at this point that the grip loosened on its own. He rocketed out of the grasp, much faster than he’d anticipated. With a panic, he realized he’d have to be creative to not tumble onto the next sleeping fellow. He instinctively shifted his weight as best he could, sending his top half forward and down. With not a small amount of grace, he touched down with his right hand to the cement floor. Somehow, he managed to cartwheel himself over the snoozing obstacle, his feet touching down just on the other side. The man grinned to himself. He walked up to the slouched Jarema, placing one hand on his mouth while the other pressed the knife to his throat. With a quick, powerful slice, the man ended Jarema’s life in a silent struggle.
Past the quarters themselves, the hallways lead down into a large, dimly lit chamber. In the middle was a large, square hole filled with a small amount of water. Ordinarily, rainwater generously ran down from a chute that collected it near the top of the pyramid. However, the draught lessened the pool’s depth considerably. Only the lack of sunlight and heat kept it from completely drying. High Priest Tlacalael was drying himself after a short cleansing. He adorned himself in a colorful, bright robe. He sat on a stone bench, pondering how long it would take to solve the crisis. If they weren’t successful soon, the entire city would riot. Never mind how many were already starving to death. He closed his eyes, uttering a short prayer once more that rain bless their crops. His utterance stopped when he heard footsteps approach the doorway. He turned to find a stout fellow, armed with a spear.
“My friend,” Tlacalael began. “These chambers are sanctified. Please, leave your weapon behind if you wish to cleanse.” The visitor nodded. He laid the weapon down at the entrance. He abstained, however, from cleansing, instead opting to take a place at the priest’s side.
“Do you believe what we are doing is right?” he asked Tlacalael quietly. Tlacalael was surprised. It was quite a brash question to ask him. He considered how exactly to answer.
“I believe in the emperor. His will is to please the divine. I do not doubt his tale. Do you?”
“Do I believe the gods told him this course of action?” The man responded. “Yes, I do. However, I’ve one small issue with how we’ve approached this.” Tlacalael raised his eyebrows, but kept quiet. “This is entirely unfocused. We need to find the one god who truly cares for us. Do all of the gods truly wish the best of us? No, I think not. But I do believe that there is one who truly wishes for us to thrive, who would not inflict such harsh punishment on us without telling us why. Would this not be preferable?”
Tlacalael was stunned. “Th… this is heresy! The gods each have their proper domains, and only they can determine what! You cannot possibly be serious!” The man turned to the High Priest, staring him straight in the eyes. With unparalleled reflexes, his right hand shot behind his back, grabbing the knife hidden by his cloak. He rammed it through Tlacalael’s chest. He pressed forward, driving Tlacalael onto the bench, pinning him on his back. He ripped deep into the chest, slicing without the precision the High Priest himself held, but carving it open nonetheless. Tlacalael’s final moments were in pure shock as the assassin held his heart in front of his face. “Deathly serious, my dearest Ishmael. Find grace in his caress.”
Chaotix snapped awake. What….? Where….? He was immediately blinded by a shining, golden light. He turned around, to spare himself the trauma, and found himself on a golden floor. He could not see a horizon to this direction- the floor seemed to just go forever. “You failed,” a voice boomed from behind him. Chaotix closed his eyes shut, turning himself around. “You had the greatest of opportunities and squandered it. Death may have come, but your punishment has only begun.”
“But… I did everything I could!” he protested back. “I was nothing but loyal! I did all that was asked of me. It was the foolish priests who sentenced me to death, I did not slay myself!”
“You failed. Swiftly. Yet, still you are accurate. You did die for the greater cause. You will be welcomed in my golden palace. After a time, of course.”
“What do you mean?” Chaotix asked the voice.
“You will serve out your punishment elsewhere. When I have decided you have served justice, you will return here, your eyes able to see through the brilliance. Until then… embrace the darkness.” With that, the floor vanished beneath Chaotix. He fell away from the light, and into the void.
When I arrived the next morning, the emperor was raging at the gathered priests and warriors. Fury blazed in his eyes. I was not sure what was happening, but I found it strange that Tlacalael was not at his side. I cautiously approached the group, sidling into place a few spaces from the Emperor. When he saw me, he pointed a finger in my direction. "Scribe! Here! NOW!" I immediately shuffled up as fast as I could to his side. "Your superior is dead." he hissed. "I don't suppose you would know anything about this, would you?"
My jaw dropped. Tlacalael? Dead? It was... impossible! And I was accused of causing his demise?! "N-no, my Emperor! I had no idea! I..."
"Enough, then! We must continue his work! I will end this draught! I will save my city! I will show the gods my dedication even if it means the death of every single one us! So long as they see our suffering and faith, they will bring us water! Now you all!" he commanded to the rest of the gathered men. "You will find the purest one, or I will slay you all! Get going!"
DAY FOUR BEGINS NOW. YOU HAVE 36 HOURS.

I think it's quite plain. The gods are killing us. The killers are agents of gods. It makes sense.

At any rate, Chaotix was clearly a killer. His writeup does show that the killers are not the gods themselves, though.
The gods are having us killed off. This charade, this drought, everything, it's all a game. They're watching the mortals get massacred one by one for sport.
And to top it off we've lost the high priest, though given the circumstances I don't think there's much he could have done for us. :P
The only confusing thing: what were Yaro and Csargo? They couldn't have been gods, because they were killed. Perhaps a better case would be that they were friendly gods, or something.
What can we do about this?

To me it looks like there is one 'rogue' god, and the killers are working on behalf of him. Hence the conversation between myself and my killer, and the thing with Chaotix (I'm assuming that he was mafia, which is why we only had two kills tonight).
But then, if the High Priest actually could do something useful (tell us?), and the other two supernaturals/gods were friendly...
Not too good. 2 scum, 2 kills, 10 townies?
The bad god may well be a Godfather (if the other two were physically present), leaving 3/12...

I'm of the opinion that we have some real lurkers here. I mean throughout the last few days we've had so few posts, lots of people not voting or giving more than one post a day. People that aren't sticking their neck out and are hiding. Someone in that group is likely to be a killer. Of course I also still suspect edse who somehow is able to silently deflect suspicion without raising a fuss every time there's a vote on him.

That's a link to a Realms Beyond Mafia game that I'm currently in. It put this one to shame. It's still on the first day and there are already 282 posts from 17 players and the host. Most posts are longer and informative, inquisitive and legitimately argumentative even on day 1. Everyone posts or you get lynched. It's pretty much the exact opposite from here. It's one of the reasons I get upset when no one is posting or I get attacked because I post. I guess one of the differences is there are is no out of thread communication unless you are in a scum pack. It makes it harder on the village, and thus one of the reasons everyone pushes so hard in thread. If you want to know where my "righteousness" comes from its knowing the difference between the games.
Not to defend my scumbag friend here, but Lewwyn typically adopts this stance. At least from the Island point of view. Which he was mafia. But that's besides the point.
Also Lewwyn, different people, different site, different kind of play, etc all make for a different game.
Regardless, an important fact to remember is that the more you talk, the more likely you are to slip as scum or make a mistake. Which is why that tactic works. However, it will no doubt catch townies too, and the fact that we always have lurkers should not be a surprise to you. The length of the days may also have something to do with it. I do like discussion, and I post a lot, or at least I used to before life intervened.
Regardless of this, I'm not suspicious because of the fact you post, I'm suspicious of what you said. And to hide behind a lurker crusade is easy for scum, even if they start it, because often lynching all lurkers is a win-win situation for scumbags.

Though interestingly enough, your killchoices there (Island) may also relate back to here. Sasaki, ATPG, etc. Now Csargo and Yaro, both experienced at mafia and good at it. Ishamel and Jarrema are also not lurkers and they do play the game.
It (was or something like that) an unread rule that you don't kill the oldies/experienced night one, or at least that's what I've ascertained. I know you had no problem with that one.

Why do you keep voting? Unfortunately we didn’t get an official tally of the votes from yesterday, so we have no way to know if your vote then was actually counted or not. Perhaps you would like to shed some light on the matter?
GH’s vote for Chaotix could easily have been an attempt to get on the right side of the lynch. When he changed from Jarema (a “place holder” vote) Chaotix was already well in the lead. I wouldn’t discount a relationship between the two. Perhaps an explanation by GH for the reasons he switched votes would be helpful.Quote:

Maybe the folks who don't like lots of power roles have a point. If you have lots of time (spent about 40 minutes just reading and another 10 typing this) it is possible to figure some things out even this early in the game. Maybe I'm not as useless at vanilla as I thought. Or perhaps this will turn out to be a load of senseless drivel. Anyhow, in the spirit of getting more discussion. :yes:
We need to sacrifice the one who is pure. Purity can come in either good or evil form, so we should not use good/evil as a sole indicator of scum.
My reading on Chaotix is that he could have been either SK or scum. This would make more sense within the night writeup than town would.
We can't read the high priest as innocent, at least not for certain. That role might just give flavor to the writeups -- now that the high priest is dead we get less precision with a knife. But the next night will tell us a lot -- if Ishmael wasn't town then either mafia killed sk, or sk killed mafia. Here's where my relatively less experience comes in -- is one of those kill types normally not allowed? I can't remember which one normally can't kill the other. If we have 2 or more kills tonight, then the obvious assumption that Ishmael was innocent is probably correct. And in fact I'm not really saying he wasn't, just keeping the possibility open given the genre.
GH and Lewwyn make a big point about lurkers being more likely to be scum, but hunting lurkers is also a good cover for mafia trying to take control of the lynch. They throw a vote out on a lurker, and if a bandwagon results they are less likely to be suspected because late on the bandwagon is seen as more scummy than starting one in the first place. And if the mafia find themselves with more posts than the average town, it is safe to point out anyone as a lurker because their scumbuddy won't be on that list.
Then we have the dead guys talking and voting. That could mean they're scum, though I'm hard pressed to say who killed them. Would a host deliberately "kill" the mafia and make it their challenge to influence people with their dead votes? Seems too unbalanced to me. So would having townies still be able to vote after being killed, unless they were power roles to begin with.
My best guess is that one (or more) of the lurker hunters is scum. For that I'll go back to the voting patterns. The vote on Chaotix only got serious when we got most of the way through day and GH and Lewwyn both had votes. Don't know how to read Yaropolk -- dead and counted, or dead and not counted? Visorslash doesn't give me a negative vibe yet, but did follow a deader. I'm town but I can't expect you to believe me. So who voted late on that bandwagon, and are now hunting lurkers? It's a coin flip between GH and Lewwyn, and I see GH as being more helpful.
Vote: Lewwyn but I'm open to better evidence.
That took long enough to write that several posts came in.
This reminded me, I have been suspicious of Edse doing so much vote switching. I can imagine scum bouncing around like that, hoping something will stick.
I'm really torn between Lewwyn and GH, and BSmith makes the same points I would have made about GH if the coin flip went that way. Let's examine this behavior some more. :yes:

This was the first vote on Chaotix last round. The interesting thing is that this was in direct opposition to Chaotix voting for Monty, who is now Yaro's lynch choice.Quote:

- First of all, despite Yaro's statements of such when he told us to vote Monty, I was unsure if this was the first time he had pulled this in this game. Now I know that it isn't.
- Secondly, the current opinion is that Chaotix is scum of sort sort going by the drop in kills. Whether or not this is actually the case (I think it's likely, but am nowhere near certain), Yaro is really pushing this line hard in order to get us to lynch Monty this round. If we're inclined to believe Yaro, then the best thing we should do is probably trust his source(s) and vote Monty. If we don't, or believe that he has an ulterior motive, we can't really strike directly at Yaropolk, him being already dead and all. Monty is in this case either a sacrificial lamb designed to be part of a confidence scam on Yaro's part (the kills decrease again and we hail Yaro as our savior for the rest of the game and follow his directives unquestioningly) or a role of some importance that is in opposition to Yaro's goals. There is also the possibility that Yaro's being manipulated by the source feeding him this information, but I find this unlikely as there is a high chance that Yaro has a role himself.
In any case, Monty's been on since the discussion ramped up earlier today and hasn't posted.

Come on GH, you can do better than that. First you give your reasoning for voting Chaotix as "I was drunk," and then you switch to Montmorency simply because a dead person told you to. Sure he's implying that he has a source of information (detective, PMs when he was alive, whatever), but anybody can do that - scum, a third-party role, or even just a townie who wants to make his case heard. If I told everybody to vote for you because "a little bird told me to," would you then meekly acquiesce and self vote?
The difference between the two cases is that in this case, I outlined most to all of the possible motives for Yaropolk to be doing this and determined that it was more probable he was telling the truth (or at least what he perceived to be the truth). In your example, I'd know without a doubt that you were lying and thus focus on proving it to everybody. Differences in available information account for a lot. :laugh4:
