From what I've heard, though, you hit some sort of max armor level or something like that, so you can take your steel plate all the way to level 50. Can somebody explain that to me?
This should explain it better than I can.
Quote:
Damage reduction is capped at 80%. If you are wearing all four pieces of armor, this occurs at 567 displayed armor rating. If you have 100 skill and all relevant armor perks, this requires a smithed armor rating of about 135. You can increase your smithed armor rating by 1 roughly every 2 points of Smithing with the appropriate perk, or every 4 without. Therefore, at 100 Smithing you will need 85 base armor with the appropriate perk, which is not achievable without a shield with Light Armor (though Dragonscale comes close at 82 for the set) and requires at least a Steel Plate set for Heavy Armor. With Fortify Smithing enchanted apparel and Smithing potions you can boost Smithing even further, which can potentially allow any material for which a Smithing perk exists to reach the cap. At the extreme end, you will need about 126 Smithing to make Steel Armor hit the cap, and about 154 Smithing for an Elven set. Unfortunately, Fur, Hide, Studded, Leather, and Iron armors are not affected by any Smithing perks and so cannot be improved as much.
With the aid of enchanting (fortify smithing) and pre-made enchanting and smithing potions, and of course the appropriate armor perks, you can reach the armor cap with any style or type of armor in the game, even hide and iron armor. All without even using a shield.
Shields, spells, and the
Lord Stone can reduce the base armor required to hit the cap even further, but these require more management.
Basically, as I see it, if you can get a rating of 567 with an armour (possible, like the article says by using fortify smithing potions/enchantments.....remember you can keep improving armour even after legendary...even though it stays legendary, its rating increases), then you can use it happily.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
started a new playthrough (was 20 on my nord two hander but i have restartitis and also am not a fan of melee builds) decided to mix it up and went with a breton mage. lol weight all they way to right so hes jacked as well.
magic was powerful until i upped the difficulty to master..... everything is so much more difficult now its insane.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
i know lol im using light armor and one handed.
obv smithing is a go as always.
its just more difficult but i relish the actual difficulty now just killed whiterun dragon

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
this game takes up a heinous amount of space on the xbox.
i just lost my decade old profile (no recovery available) along with my current save. i had 12000 gamer score which is meaningless i know but it is of value to me.
look i like to pretend im a hardcore gamer and know alot about games and play for hours a day but i do not have the kind of money or willingness to spend said money on some things. i just have a cheap little memory unit that the xbox comes with and only have an arcade to begin with.
that being said I shouldnt NEED anymore than that to play this game.
very very angry and disappointed right now.
also i cant ever start new games because there is a ******* game breaking glitch where no one talks at all and so the ******* game never progresses and i never get out of the **********88 wagon to start and i have to try over and over again until it finally ******* works.
i freaking love this game but it just literally resulted in the loss of my beloved profile, lost my 48 hour save, and now i cannot even start a new game. Im so angry right now i cannot even think

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Ouch! Sorry to hear that Centurion1 You would think features like a profile would be stored in a separate cache or something.
I have read a lot about the game and I'm dieing to play it. Wait until the Construction Set and a player made "patch" or just dive in? Over at UESP they have documented a lot of the gamebreakers... would it be sufficient to just avoid the known bugs and hope I don't "discover something new?

And that's why you want to get it for the PC. With the console you can solve such annoyances.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
It's the poor souls trying to play the game on a PS3 I feel for. Once your save game reaches a certain size the frame rate is forever reduced to unplayable levels. Speculation has it that it's a combination of how the PS3 shares its RAM, how the game keeps saved world data in RAM, and the fact the game saves the status of every single object you move forever instead of implementing some sort of reset that moves it back after X game days. "Sorry, you moved a few too many baskets and it's eating up the GPU's RAM. Start a new character." If that speculation is correct then a fix may not be possible as it would require some hefty engine re-writing. This in addition to the longest load times of any platform, and all the problems experienced by the other platforms.

Sounds good!
I guess I'll just do what worked for Oblivion; save early, save often, and don't play too long w/o jumping out of the game for a bit. Even at it's most stable that game had some quirky surprises.
The Official Forum was informative; the most common complaint seemed to be that there is no way to be "good"/"heroic" in carrying out most of the quests. Certainly not game-breaking for me (if true) but a surprising oversight by Beth.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
yeah instead of white or black there is quite a bit of grey in this which i tend to play. even when i try to be evil on a playthrough i just cant. i always console myself that this reflects well on my character.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
I play on the PC, but have you tried simply uninstalling and reinstalling the game? Because if even the earlier saves are messed up it must be some problem that might've occurred with the installed files itself, and not just a bug.

Took the plunge!
I find the controls a little clunky but I guess I'll get used to it. Need to see if one can map a lot of the clicking to a mouse or controller.
Graphics are nice but that's not what I play a game for; need to see if the story picks up.
I know I'm doing a lot wrong; Breton-sign of the Mage and I've killed everything with a mace so far :p Guess I better re-track to the first dungeon I passed and learn how combat really works :)

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
imperial is a good race the gold bonus is not something that can be replicated and its sizeable haha

For ES races in broadest storkes;
Pure Combat:
Nord
Orc
Redguard
Pure Magic:
High Elf
Pure stealth:
Kajit
Wood Elf
Magic/combat:
Breton
Dark Elf
Combat/stealth:
Argonian
Imperial (maybe)
The Imperials and the Argonians are the weakest races (in terms of bonuses). That said with some fore though and luck any race can succeed in most situations.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
imperials bonus gold ability is filthy. none of the bonuses for any race are really super strong but that extra gold is very very noticeable. instead of say five gold you find 15. ive also seemed to find better loot overall and more gems.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Argonians are the bomb. They have always been my favorite race to play as.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Which is less than useless, and always has been. Water-breathing potions and charms are more plentiful and entirely more useful. At least now they can wear shoes.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Which is also a perk on the restoration tree that anyone can get. That also happens automatically.

Mage guild. Went to talk to the guy in "Hall of Elements"... still waiting for his reply. He, and only he froze up solid. Hope I don't need him for anything else :p

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
I love hearing about all these problems everyone is experiencing. My Xbox Morrowind GOTY was almost flawless. It gives me hope that Skyrim should be similar. Never played Oblivion though.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
my most common issue and its incredibly infuriating. notihng you can do unfortunately. it will not reverse itself.
@vladdy oh im sure by goty status it will be totally clean. morrowind on release was horrendously buggy as well all elder scrolls games are.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
I keep rolling Nords, since I figure, you know, you're in Nordistan, might as well play a native. I've tried out four characters, all Nords, just to see how they played. Did a big armor mage, a stealth bow dude, a pure mage, and then a 2H heavy armor stabby guy. I'm enjoying the 2H smacky stabby fellow the most, so I guess he's going to take me through Skyrim.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
The guy unfroze when I came back to him (did a cpl other quests)
Today I got something I hate about Steam or any other on-line dependency. "cannot connect to cloud" and various portents about "out of sync" if I proceed w/o a heavenly connection. FFS the game is on the computer; its not a mmorpg I should not even have to think about that bs. /rant
Overall game seems good but I am really annoyed with some things.

I haven't done that quest line yet. But I'm siding with the empire, the Stormcloaks are (unwitting) butt-monkeys of the Thalmoor. And if they win Skyrim ends up like at best like Hammerfell, at worst (and most probably) like Elswyer. Elvish states in the ES universe are not what you'd call just or fair. Yea, but if you help the Stormcloaks *you* could be the pointy-eared Nazi.

This. In fact, i found it incredibly poignant and emotional from a Nord's perspective to side with the Empire than the stormcloaks. I was throwing down my own people's hopes for freedom in order to save them from an even worse fate than service to an apathetic empire - being the next Thalmor target of invasion.
Freedom is an impossible hope for Skyrim being sold to the populace by a short-sighted, racist power-monger: Ulfric.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
So, did anyone of you finish the companions quests and the thief's guild? If so what do you think of the story?
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
I've only done the Thieves guild so far, and I didn't feel it was poorly written. Taking the thieves back to being Tamriel's Mafia like they were in Morrowind was a good thing. I feel that the cursed Robin Hood thing they had in Oblivion was a lot weaker. Plus the lack of the whole independent thievery thing makes it much better to play through.
-

Didn't do the thieves guild quest. The companions quest-line though, was quite short, compared to Oblivion's Fighters Guild. As far as writing is concerned, IMO that was never a strong point with TES games.
What really bothers me is that lack of a 'Destroy the Thieves Guild' quest.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
I do not think Oblivion's was better. I think Oblivion's thief's guild was poorly written too.

Some more minor (but useful) interface mods
Better sorting mod - Renames some items so that they are sorted better
Container categorization - Allows you to view containers the same way you view your own inventory, with the various categories (weapons, apparel, etc)
I highly recommend using them in conjunction with SkyUI (and to make it easier on yourself, use the Nexus Mod Manager, too).
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Thank you for the link to SkyUI:yes:
Trying out an Argonian now. Much happier overall. The best thing for a new toon to do seems to be practicing on whoever leads you out of the initial area;
The thief quests seem a little weak. I am not fond of the "enforcer" role but I'm just getting started on it really. The thief class seems pretty strong though and I do like "sneaking" :)
Bugs are a problem. It took me a mind-bending amount of time to complete the dungeon for Azura's quest. At the end? No star (broken or otherwise) in the "boss" chest so no way to advance it. Will have to "console" the item in order to continue :(
The "perks" feature is really nice! Makes for some tough choices and allows a bit of personalization. Still, getting stun-locked by an NPC mage is really frustrating :P

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Got it for Christmas and absolutely loving it.
How do you guys approach this game? Normally, I play a TES game with one character, join as many factions as possible and do as much as possible with this one character. I tried that in Morrowind, but when I reached about level 60 or so, there wasn't any real incentive for me to keep going. I had a very powerful enchanted sword that killed almost everything with one or two strokes and the game started to feel boring.
I think I'm going to "divide" the game this time. Now, I'm playing as a Nord, focused on fighting (sword and shield, bow and light armor). I joined the Companions, have been doing lots of little side quests, discover the land. I think I'll join the Legion, do those quests and then probably finish the main quest. Instead of also doing Thieves Guild, Dark brotherhood, Mages Guild etc.; I think I'll just start over again to play a ruthless criminal, focusing more on pickpocketing, sneaking, speechcraft etc. and only join Thieves Guild and Dark Brotherhood (and perhaps the Stormcloaks as well). After that, I can try a Mage (but I'm not so fond of mages).

I like to do it all! Not possible this time around I think. The strongest part of the character develops through perks, and you only get so many.
Like Oblivion it's easy to run into the "leveling problem"; too many levels and not a playable selection of skills. I am trying to keep focused on a fairly narrow range of skills that help me kill stuff - at least until the main quest is over.
All classes appear to have abilities that are very powerful, so I think Bethesda did a good job on balance.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
I tend to roleplay at first and then if i actually keep a character for long enough i do everything else. most of my time is just spent exploring and stockpiling my house.
I usually tend to restart at around 20-25.
havent played in a week and a half the bugs are unbearable and make me want to smash my xbox absolutely horrendous and makes me hate bethesda and ive loved the gameplay of every game they have ever produed. i even loved oblivion. but i find it so disrespectful to not do enough testing to fix this insane amount of bugs i am quickly beginning to hate the game.

Me too.
I'll probably stick with one character and see how far I get. If I finish the game or take the character as far as is fun, I might try another, but usually just getting through the game even once is enough for me as it takes me so long to do so. In Oblivion I went heavy mage with almost no weapon skills. This time I'm going to try something like a battle mage, but hand to hand combat is too stressful (because I suck at it). Maybe practice will improve my skills. Like with Oblivion, I've taken the main quest a few missions in, but there are so many distractions, it is hard to decide which way to go.

You're probably going to hate me now, but after 23 hours of gameplay (PC version), I encountered only one bug (just couldn't move my character at a certain moment, a reload of a previous save solved it).
People always complain about how bugged the Bethesda games are, but, apart for some minor things, I never encountered game breaking bugs in Oblivion and Morrowind. Guess I'm just lucky.
I like being wealthy, having many houses and being able to bring in all kinds of loot, trophees and "old armour". I crafter my entire Elven armor myself and allthough I'll change it for better armor later on, I won't sell it. I'll keep it as a souvenir. Once I'm old, I'll be able to sit in front of my fireplace and look at all my old armour sets and tell stories to my grandchildren. "I was using that bow and wearing that helmet when I defeated blahblahblah".
At level 19 now. Archery + sneaking rocks.

So many distractions. It's hard to finish a quest in this game, certainly so if you need to walk some distance before you get there. I really should learn how to say "no, not now" to people. It's starting to feel like work, where you need to prioritize your tasks, else nothing gets done. There's even a quest where the quest giver sends mercenaries after you if you don't finish the quest fast enough :mean:

I try to heed the lyrics of Bilbo's "The Walking Song" from Lord of the Rings:
Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate.
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Alas, too often I fail at the "pass them by today" part. :laugh4: But it is fun none-the-less. :2thumbsup:

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Hi all, got the game for christmas and I am a Nord fighter/mage at level 15. My biggest problem is my intense curiousity. I literally cannot complete a quest because I keep getting distracted whenver i see a new place to explore on my map. Add to that my curious kidnapping to the far side of the world and I have spent entire days without even leveling up or even fighting.
Only had a few bugs so far, nothing game breaking, although one has ruined a sidequest by teleporting an NPC into the sky...

I like to put myself in the game and make decisions as I'm really there. I didn't join the thieves guild or the Dark Brotherhood because I feel sort of bad if I steal stuff or murder someone even though it's not real life.

The video is great!
Pretty much done with the main quest now. I doubt I'll play it again...maybe a new patch or the release of the Construction Set will make it worthwhile. Controls on PC are borked imho; spells and attacks sometimes go MIA and you just stand getting slaughtered (no, not stunned which would be a valid game mechanic); minor things abound but my pet: why not put some indication of where to go in the quest completion box? Its nice that usually it tells you WHO to see, but never WHERE you might find them.
Some problems are just me. I have never found a way back to the Cistern, so the Thief questline is kinda stuck :p
Good idea, poor execution.

Hello,
We got SkyBoost that claims to be relieving the CPU-bound bottlenecks that still get updated. It promises FPS gains in areas especially like Markath.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
A lot of praises for SkyBoost -simply better than TESVAL- which I can confirm myself too. SkyBoost r4 (FPU version for AMD, SSE2 for Intel) indeed relieves your system at a noticable level.
Try it.
I am not getting any FPS drops while viewing Whiterun from Dragonreach. I have a Skyrim packed full of HD textures with .ini tweaks as well as AA 4x and AF 16x on 1680x1050 resolution.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Thank you Craterus I found the entrance behind temple of Mara :)
LEN, SkyBoost is wonderful! No more standing and getting snuffed while trying to do things on-the-fly. Thank you for another very useful link :) Again, the player community is making a Bethesda release "user friendly".

If you select a quest it will place a nav point where you need to go on the map that you can also see on the compass. Is this what you're looking for?
I'm playing the PC version, BTW.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
To add more into this, when you bring up [L]ocal map while you are viewing the global [M]ap, you can even spot the exact NPC you are supposed to interact for the accomplishment and it's not fixed, it's real-time.
-
Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
I installed Skyboost and I'm seeing a little improvement. I have all settings maxed and the fps when viewing Whiterun from Dragonreach improved from 14 fps to 19. I know that is still rather low, but the movement of people did smooth out much better with that 5 fps increase.

I'm playing the PC version, BTW.
I'm aware the icon comes up when doing the quest, but it does not seem to appear for turn-ins...
Hmm, I may be missing the obvious... do I have the quest selected when looking at completion? I'll have to check!
Thank you Nelson :)

So the Bronies have invaded Skyrim.
Truly the Devil has made his kingdom on earth. FLEE! FLEE!! For only the righteous shall be spared!

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
I can't believe that, after two and a half months of owning this game, I'm still enjoying it and discovering new locations and events even without the ability to download mods and such; I received AC:Revelations and Arkham City for Christmas, but once finished they were resigned to the shelf as Skyrim went back into the 360 for the umpteenth time.
I have severe roleplaying syndrome coupled with restart-itis and alt-itis, so I'm currently packing a character for each race; at the moment, I'm playing as an Argonian Bard called Hits-High-Notes (spot the joke, anyone?). He's mainly specialising in Light Armor, Illusion and Speech, carries a lute everywhere, likes hanging around in taverns pestering people. He's a refreshing change of pace from my other characters, at any rate.
Has anyone ever had to explain Skyrim to the uninitiated? I was in the plains around Whiterun, looting Mammoth Cheese, when a comment from my other half comes up about where the stuff comes from. I muse that the giants must milk the mammoths themselves, whereby we then get into a debate about how it's not possible for giants to do that, because they're clearly too stupid to do so, the proof of which being that they scratch their heads, which obviously makes them unintelligent! I mean, let's ignore the fact they make their own clothing and weaponry and they're also running their own airlines...

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
They are way past the airline stage. As I was wandering the plains west of Whiterun, I saw a mammoth shoot 50 feet straight up into the air and then float back down again as some giants watched. Clearly the giants are in the early stages of their space program.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Or maybe they are simply trying to find some sort of anti-dragon projectile weapon.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
I hear the giants have a frequent flyer club... :inquisitive:
I've yet to attempt taking on a giant or a mammoth for that matter. However, I did witness an interesting battle with a dragon taking on two giants, a mammoth and a sabre-tooth tiger. The main battle took place on a plateau of sorts with small cliff drop-offs at several places around the edge. I could see the dragon was swooping and attacking something as I approached and then noted one giant was hiding behind some trees. Right after seeing the hiding giant, the second giant disengaged from the dragon and ran down and hid along one of the cliffs while the dragon continued to fight the mammoth and/or tiger (I didn't have a clear enough view to see exactly what the dragon was fighting until I found the bodies later). After a brief rest, the one giant hiding behind the cliff, ran along it and then charged at the dragon from another direction. Again, I couldn't see the action on the plateau fully but soon the dragon went silent and the giants walked away. I ran up to the scene of the battle and found the dead dragon there...and found myself taking in the dragon soul. Thanks giants!

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Some combo of attacks makes things go flying in this game. Last night I found this Orcish shock sword that was making the weaker Forsworn go flying up in the air or fus roh dah style knock back.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
I believe that I read somewhere that when someone is hit by a killing blow the remaining damage that didnt get absorbed by the creature's hit points get's converted to momentum. So if you hit them with the infinity+1 sword when they have only 1 hp left they go flying. Dont quote me on this though.
...I wonder if I modded in a cheat sword I could get the enemy so high they end up bouncing off ceiling of the world's invisible walls.

That's correct, good sir, and it's the reason for giants being able to send you into orbit; apparently they're Lvl.32 at the start of the game (their mammoths are Lvl.38, allegedly) and you would have neither the hitpoints nor mitigation to shrug off their attacks at that stage in the game, you're instantly killed when hit, even on Novice difficulty. The sheer amount of damage they deal over one's health limit is enough to send your lifeless body ragdolling through the air.
This is technically a glitch in the way the system handles damage calculations, but Bethesda have maintained that they'll keep glitches in the game if they're funny, as this one is. Never gets old for me, at least. :laugh4:

I've killed two mammoths in one battle once while hiding in some ruin. The mammoths couldn't enter and I simply shot at them from the inside.
As for giants, they don't seem to like water. I ran away from one once, into a river. I noted he didn't follow me, but just kept standing there, yelling at me. So, I slowly swum back to a spot where I could stand, but still out of reach from his club. Many arrows took care of him. For a rocket scientist, he didn't seem the brightest bulb to me.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
Despite what I said about not playing the game again, it drew me back :(
I have to admit I have never managed to kill either a mammoth or a giant. Kiting seems to be the best way , but I'm just not that good at it. A hit and run melee attack almost worked, but I zigged when I should have zagged and was rewarded with a bird's eye view of the area.
Quirky behaviour seems to be the rule. I have battled dragons with their aid; after such battles it's a coin toss whether they quietly walk away or chase me. At least they have personality :)

Your highest upgraded knockback shout (the meme generating "fus-rho-dah") will knock giants clean off their feet and send them flying backwards. Once you're around level 15-20, you can capitalize on this by running up to them and BEATING THEIR BRAINS OUT before they recover. That should take about 50% of their life, then its all about the footwork. Engage them on ground where you can dance them around and avoid their massive strikes. Sprinting and jumping out of the way is the best way to avoid a hit, since even crazy decked out, if they hit you with their rocket club its a 1 hit k.o
I've killed two giants at once before using the shout dodge and strike method.

There used to be a glitch where chickens could report crimes. I think they should have made a chicken that looked like an english bobby that wanders the map looking for crime to report. When he see's you commit a crime it should run up to you and shout, "STOP RIGHT THERE, BA-KAWWWK, CRIMINAL SCUM!"

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
If you opt in (via Steam), 1.4 is up as BETA for Skyrim.
Both the author of performance boosters and users confirm that they experience the highest FPS gain with 1.4.
Make sure you make backup for your saves considering this is labeled "Beta" for a reason.

Re: Official Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim thread!
So I just got a kill a giant quest. This should be fun. Call dragon and flaming ebony battle axe.
