Sean Connery
Michael Caine!
What's wrong with you?! How on earth could you forget him?! :soapbox:
Chuck Norris isn't in the list....
Sean Connery was a bit personal (didn't like the fact he uses his Scottish accent in every film) :sweatdrop:
Michael Cain was an unfortunate mistake (forgot he was still alive) :shame:
Chuck Norris deserves to a Golden Raspberry. (along with Steven Segal, I rank him as one of the worst famous actors)
Edit: De Niro got my vote, but I did have my eye on Ed Norton, the man will be a legend...
None of the list presented, as they are all movie actors, and thus by definition, cannot be counted as great.
Since Paul Schofield recently passed away, I would have to offer Simon Russell Beale. Possibly Dame Judi Dench.
I'm torn between Lorenzo Lamas and Steven Segal. I'll have to think about it for a while.
I am somewhat puzzled that Johnny Depp did not make it on the list (but I guess everybody can find somebody who in his opinion should have made the list).
Difficult choice - I think I'll go for Edward Norton (with American History X being the decisive movie)
Not only is Segal the greatest living actor, he's also the greatest living musician.
:speechless:
Al Pacino, nobody can do a rant like he does.
Of the younger generation, Johny Depp. Maybe not the best per se but the most fun to watch.
Okay, now that three different people have asked for Johnny Depp, I'm going to abuse my powers again and add him to the list. The poll is at the maximum, I think, so I'll need to bump some sucker off.
-edit-
I take it back, I was able to add another name to the list. Now you can all vote for Johnny Depp ... even though you know you should vote for Steven Segal. Behold his genius!
Daniel Day-Lewis, this shouldn't even be questionable. Ed Norton, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeremy Irons, and Matt Damon also stand out on that list, but even they have a few performances a piece that aren't anything to write home about. Daniel Day-Lewis has never put in a bad performance in his entire life, and his list of roles is simply unparallelled.
De Niro and Pacino shouldn't even be on that list. They've both been phoning it in so long that their past glories are very heavily tarnished. They both should have retired 15 years ago. Tom Hanks is also someone who would have been a stronger challenger several years ago. He hasn't been putting in negative performances, but he's definitely resting on his laurels. Hanks has pretty good range, but doesn't seem inclined to push himself.
Omissions that should be on that list (though still wouldn't get my vote for 'best'):
Peter O'Toole
Christian Bale
Brad Pitt
Johnny Depp
Benicio Del Toro
(as noted above) Michael Caine
Ben Kingsley
Geoffrey Rush
Anthony Hopkins
Gary Oldman?
John Malkovich?
Ralph Fiennes?
Gerard Depardieu?
I feel the need for forming an anti-Segal club....
You do know he's called Mojo Priest by the magicians and musicians, right? You're talking about a great man.
-edit-
P.S.: Vote:Steven Segal
I will personally give an ice cream bar to each and every Orgah who votes for the Mojo Priest. Greatest living actor! Greatest actor of all time!
Morgan Freeman. I have yet to find a performance of his I did not thing was top notch.
William Shatner ~D
Gah! I see no mention of Kevin Spacey or Christopher Walken. They deserve to be on that list more than some of the ones mentioned (although the majority are definitely worthy). ~;)
Tough call. A lot of those actors were in some pretty bad movies.
- De Niro is good, but his work has slipped lately. After Ronin, he has tried comedy roles, which is commendable, but nothing really stands out.
- Hanks does good work, but he will always be Kip from Bosom Buddies/Rick from Bachelor Party. ~D
- Pacino seems to be in a rut. Probably not his fault, but Scent of a Woman ruined him for a while. Haven't seen The Merchant of Venice, I would imagine he could do a good job in that role. He was in Gigli, which would kill a lesser actors career right there.
- Norton also hasn't done anything really good for a while. Rounders/AmHistX/Fight Club were an excellent run, but his talents are wasted on the Hulk. Bonus points for Death To Smoochy though. :2thumbsup:
- Day-Lewis is great, he just hasn't been in that many movies. It looks like he is more selective that most, he's not acting for a paycheck...
- ...unlike Freeman. Why would an actor with such talent take such mediocre roles.
- Nicholson is like Day-Lewis. Not too many movies, fair amount of diversity now, although the serious dramas are his best.
- Hopkins. Probably my pick. Yeah, he's done some stinkers (Zorro), but he's Anthony freakin' Hopkins.
- Hoffman is solid, but Phillip Seymour is better these days. ~;)
- Crowe is also pretty selective about his roles. He can do the commanding presence role very well. Some day I must watch Romper Stomper.
- Irons is a mystery. I know he's good, but I always end up seeing him in crappy movies. :inquisitive:
- Hackman - the hardest working man in show business. Although I think I heard he retired to do books now. Great range, great voice.
- DiCaprio has definite potential. A few more really good roles and he can shed Titanic. ~D
- I was surprised looking through Denzel's IMDB profile. I thought he had been in more movies. Solid work, but nothing really stands out.
- Douglas should not be on the list. He's greatest achievement is sleeping with Catherine Zeta-Jones.
- Damon needs to be more selective in his work, but he's a lot better than his old partner in crime...
- Voight seems to enjoy supporting and bit roles now.
As others have said, several other names are missing.
Jack Nicholson of course.
vote:Rowan Atkinson
Come on, Orgahs! One more vote for Steven Segal and we can tie this off with that no-good lazybones, Daniel Day-Lewis. Don't hand this to the Brits! Steven Segal is the greatest living actor!
I'm gonna vote for Day-Lewis just because you said he was British :clown:
Denzel Washington. I find he can play the more intelligent action hero far beter than anyone else out there and those are my favourite movies - so I guess it is him.
Sir Alec Guiness!
Of this list, Daniel Day-Lewis.
Most actors play a certain character. I would say most of those listed play their character equally well, so it really comes down to whose character you like the best.
Jackie 'big nose' Cheng :2thumbsup:
Okay, Anthony Hopkins, Daniel Day-Lewis and Gah! are all beating Steven Segal now. This will not stand! We will triumph! Segal forever!
I went for daniel day lewis but it could have been any of these... Morgan Freeman, Denzel Washington, Tom Hanks, Gene Hackman and Cage or Depp
I think daniel took it in the end, because he's british, because i was worried steven segal may be doing better in the pool, of my choices he was top of the list, bar hanks, better recent work, only perhaps challenged by depp for recent work...
The particular problem with Steven Segal is that action heroes should run like a girl, observe.

Edward Norton, he was amazing in both Fight Club and American History X.
:balloon2:
I ended up going for Anthony Hopkins. I mean, just compare "A Bridge Too Far" to "Mutiny on the Bounty" to "Silence of the Lambs." Not bad, if you ask me.
As for Daniel Day-Lewis, I've only seen one of his movies, and frankly he hasn't acted nearly enough to be considered "legendary." That's why I still consider Michael Caine to be the closest thing to a living legend: he's acted in over a hundred movies in probably a greater variety of roles (and has done better) than any other actor alive.
Lewis .
Hard choice, but I picked Norton because he's still young and will end up legendary.
Inappropriately fondling a panda is not grounds for "greatest living actor."
how long has he not been living???
Haha, Segal. :laugh4:
On that list Lewis, but my favourite on that list would be Denzel Washington. I absolutely loved Man on Fire.
I must admit you make a strong case Lemur, but my vote would go to either Derek Jacobi or Jim Broadbent.
Went for Edward Norton. Actually, I don't think he's "greater" than a dozen other actors-- it's not really possible to compare greatness imo. But having just re-watched Fight Club last week, I am teetering dangerously close to Norton-worship.
Sean Connery or Clint Eastwood
Agreed, and that's why I think Daniel Day-Lewis stands out. He does not have a single role or character that defines him. His roles run the gamut of acting, and he excels in all of them. Anyone who can pull off My Left Foot, The Last of the Mohicans, In the Name of the Father, and There Will Be Blood has proven that he has range beyond what most actors are capable of.
I do like Segal. However I cast my vote for Nicholson. Two of my favorite movies, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "The Shining" really show off his multi-role talents.
i had a tough time deciding... till i figured out the vote was for "Greatestactor" - as in one who hasnt been assasinated for doing intolerably bad movies... so i had to vote Seagal!!! :laugh4:Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
Denzel. Because of Man on Fire. And Malcolm X. And The Hurricane. And Training Day. And American Gangster. And The Great Debaters.
Denzel Washington FTW.
Wow, the results of this poll are a powerful statement against democracy. :gah:
I have provided ample evidence that Steven Segal is the greatest living actor, not to mention the greatest living musician and panda-fondler.
Now I must show that he is also the greatest living philosopher.
"Mrs. Lemur? Yes, your husband seems to have suffered some sort of mental breakdown brought on by an unhealthy obsession with Steven Segal. What's that? Pickles and aardvarks will calm him down? Very well, I'll see what we can do...."
Have I mentioned that Steven Segal has his own energy drink? I thought you all should know that.
