Sean Connery was a bit personal (didn't like the fact he uses his Scottish accent in every film)

Michael Cain was an unfortunate mistake (forgot he was still alive)

Chuck Norris deserves to a Golden Raspberry. (along with Steven Segal, I rank him as one of the worst famous actors)

Edit: De Niro got my vote, but I did have my eye on Ed Norton, the man will be a legend...

None of the list presented, as they are all movie actors, and thus by definition, cannot be counted as great.

Since Paul Schofield recently passed away, I would have to offer Simon Russell Beale. Possibly Dame Judi Dench.

I'm torn between Lorenzo Lamas and Steven Segal. I'll have to think about it for a while.

Nah, instead I just abused my powers in the Frontroom to add both Steven Segal and Gah! to the poll. (Note: Including the Gah! option is a traditional courtesy in all polls on the Org.)

Thanks for the GAH option, I really should of had that.

Edit: You voted Segal?! damn I hate that guy... and all of his films.

I am somewhat puzzled that Johnny Depp did not make it on the list (but I guess everybody can find somebody who in his opinion should have made the list).

Difficult choice - I think I'll go for Edward Norton (with American History X being the decisive movie)

Not only is Segal the greatest living actor, he's also the greatest living musician.

Al Pacino, nobody can do a rant like he does.

Of the younger generation, Johny Depp. Maybe not the best per se but the most fun to watch.

Okay, now that three different people have asked for Johnny Depp, I'm going to abuse my powers again and add him to the list. The poll is at the maximum, I think, so I'll need to bump some sucker off.

    -edit-

I take it back, I was able to add another name to the list. Now you can all vote for Johnny Depp ... even though you know you should vote for Steven Segal. Behold his genius!

Daniel Day-Lewis, this shouldn't even be questionable. Ed Norton, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeremy Irons, and Matt Damon also stand out on that list, but even they have a few performances a piece that aren't anything to write home about. Daniel Day-Lewis has never put in a bad performance in his entire life, and his list of roles is simply unparallelled.

De Niro and Pacino shouldn't even be on that list. They've both been phoning it in so long that their past glories are very heavily tarnished. They both should have retired 15 years ago. Tom Hanks is also someone who would have been a stronger challenger several years ago. He hasn't been putting in negative performances, but he's definitely resting on his laurels. Hanks has pretty good range, but doesn't seem inclined to push himself.

Omissions that should be on that list (though still wouldn't get my vote for 'best'):
    Peter O'Toole
    Christian Bale
    Brad Pitt
    Johnny Depp
    Benicio Del Toro
    (as noted above) Michael Caine
    Ben Kingsley
    Geoffrey Rush
    Anthony Hopkins

Gah! I see no mention of Kevin Spacey or Christopher Walken. They deserve to be on that list more than some of the ones mentioned (although the majority are definitely worthy).

Tough call. A lot of those actors were in some pretty bad movies.

    • De Niro is good, but his work has slipped lately. After Ronin, he has tried comedy roles, which is commendable, but nothing really stands out.
    • Hanks does good work, but he will always be Kip from Bosom Buddies/Rick from Bachelor Party.
    • Pacino seems to be in a rut. Probably not his fault, but Scent of a Woman ruined him for a while. Haven't seen The Merchant of Venice, I would imagine he could do a good job in that role. He was in Gigli, which would kill a lesser actors career right there.
    • Norton also hasn't done anything really good for a while. Rounders/AmHistX/Fight Club were an excellent run, but his talents are wasted on the Hulk. Bonus points for Death To Smoochy though.
    • Day-Lewis is great, he just hasn't been in that many movies. It looks like he is more selective that most, he's not acting for a paycheck...
    • ...unlike Freeman. Why would an actor with such talent take such mediocre roles.
    • Nicholson is like Day-Lewis. Not too many movies, fair amount of diversity now, although the serious dramas are his best.
    • Hopkins. Probably my pick. Yeah, he's done some stinkers (Zorro), but he's Anthony freakin' Hopkins.
    • Hoffman is solid, but Phillip Seymour is better these days.
    • Crowe is also pretty selective about his roles. He can do the commanding presence role very well. Some day I must watch Romper Stomper.
    • Irons is a mystery. I know he's good, but I always end up seeing him in crappy movies.
    • Hackman - the hardest working man in show business. Although I think I heard he retired to do books now. Great range, great voice.
    • DiCaprio has definite potential. A few more really good roles and he can shed Titanic.
    • I was surprised looking through Denzel's IMDB profile. I thought he had been in more movies. Solid work, but nothing really stands out.
    • Douglas should not be on the list. He's greatest achievement is sleeping with Catherine Zeta-Jones.
    • Damon needs to be more selective in his work, but he's a lot better than his old partner in crime...
    • Voight seems to enjoy supporting and bit roles now.

Denzel Washington. I find he can play the more intelligent action hero far beter than anyone else out there and those are my favourite movies - so I guess it is him.
