Both sides of nails of both toes were taken out, then down to the nail bed to prevent them growing.

So look at your big toe, take about 1cm or half an inch off each side of the nail. Thats what my toes will look like.

    Constantly ingrown for three years.

oh? You had ingrown? Yeah I had it bad for a long while, soon it got to a point where i couldnt stand on the foot. Went into the doctors and they removed about a half inch from each side like you said and about 2 oz of pus... Was not fun.

So, looks like you won't be driving the car for a few days. Reminds me of when my Dad held me down and cut mine out with his pocket knife...

Eh, you can actually get surgery for that? Been having some ingrown issues once in a while which result in a week of pain, but I just keep rubbing in the approximate location with a nail cutter/knife and it gets better then.

Doesn't sound pleasant getting your nails pulled. Reminds of torture.

OUCH! That's going to hurt over the next couple weeks!

Yeh. I got my tongue untied 4ish weeks ago. Didn't hurt though. Just some minor discomfort for a week.

When I was younger my brother slammed a door on my foot and my big toenail came off. Had to grow a new one completely.

I am lucky. I sliced my palm with a curved tiny knife a few days ago (I am not used to dealing with soft fruits...). I could see my red flesh slit open but it did not bleed much, which I found to be... interesting. Maybe because in the palm there are not many blood vessels. It was not very pleasant, though. It also forced me to rely entirely on my right hand for a day or two.

They can actually put some stuff on that dissolves the nail. Weird stuff.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wedge_resection

    Thats what I had done.

@FH: I've become quite proficient at doing it myself (my podiatrist had a look and sat back astonished saying "I've never seen anyone do it this good, you've fixed it!" then of course, as usual it came back in few weeks.) and the most important part is getting right to the side of the nail and making it a rounded edge.

@stephen: Yeah i always wondered what that red stuff was, it would stay there, painful to touch, yet it wasnt skin and wasnt blood, it was like...flesh? annoying anyway.

I assume you got that on duty? If so I guess you were lucky that whatever happened wasn't more serious! Hey at least you'll have a scar and a story to tell the grandkids one day.

Took the bandages off, I regret it. I can feel the stich struggling to hold the other part of my toe. Hurts.
