hehe, to be honest, I read the post that the patch won't be out till after January or something, and I haven't been playing any RTS games (I have been playing a Real-Time Tactical game: Dawn of War) so I got the hankering. Did I turn to RTW? Oh hell no, I turned to MTW. And it was so much fun.

I went into the campmap/startpos Early.txt file, tinkered with a few things here and there, and set to work dominating with the English again. Well, my first game ended in like 5 turns because all my heirs were slaughtered on the hills of Scotland in one aweful battle. Anyway, I got my bearings again after a few games...and it was so much fun.

I gotta tell ya, the graphics, just glitter, just eye candy; as satisfying as cotton candy, and evaporates as quickly. Ah, anyway, everything I might say has already been said. MTW was, and is, a great game.

I think it is hard to pin down what the problem for me has been. I love the game and most of its features. Siege battles are great. The best I've seen in any game. The limited AI is a problem.

But that isn't enough to sap the excitement I should feel playing the game. I've never doubted the outcome of any game I've played, and often feel like its tedious managing my cities and units.

Even in the last two versions moving all those spies by hand was less or felt like less work than managing a smaller number in this game.

It does look good, and now that I've got the hang of the fast battles they look good too. But....how does that song go? "You've lost that lovin feeling?

One of the big draws of the ORG used to be its download section unfortunately this is no longer the case. The admins haven't opened the file area so everyone (myself included) are going over to TWCenter.

Yes, RTW is selling for $30 at Best Buy this week, and the red box art looks good. It really stands out, and catches the eye. I even cautioned a customer who was holding the box at Best Buy on Saturday when the game was selling for $50 that the game needed a patch yet to be released. He said he would probably buy it anyway based on looking at the box. He wanted to know how bloody it was, and I told him they took out all the blood to get a Teen rating. I had to leave, so I don't know if he bought it.

Meanwhile, over at the www.twcenter.net, most are not active anymore because all we did was hype over the new game in August/September/October 2004, and that was also during the summer holiday with loads of big movies to download (Time Commanders, 2 decisive battles, dozens of trailers). At some point we hacked the data out of the demo to see all the speeches, building texts, unit texts, 1 month before the game was released (the datapack files).

Basically, before the game was out, we knew EVERYTHING about it. I am not kidding you, the game didnt surprise me anymore. It took some getting used to and I still dont have any campaign game that goes beyond 200 BC, having started and finished 8 or 9 campaigns, all on VH/VH.

This translated into little animo to go online and multiplay, and those who did are happy i guess playing there or @home singleplayer. In any case it decreased the desire to post on forums. To each his own, and surprising enough, the biggest fun for me is watching my student friends at a scientific study getting hooked by Rome, and asking me for advice on the game.

There is only so much you can get out of a game concept, and limited as it is, the forum activity with the transistion from old to new members (there are a lot of noobs who dont post but DO read), can hardly be a surprise.

Well, MTW is more strong to be sure. Compared the value added, MTW has done much better work. Maybee if RTW would be a surprise, but no, massive ad campaign, hopes, a long time it took to "finish" the game, that made expectations too high, than the disillusion.
MTW offers more attractive era (from military point of view), more different civilizations, religions, people like to play for a nation they can identify with (by geografical or othe means). RTW, too much energy spent to try to correct bugs which should be corrected by CA. Blah, blah... what the hell are we talking about? We should be discussing tactics, like in MTW posts, not these things. :)

Actually there are still a lot of fun in RTW, for its good variety will take a long time to experience every faction's style.

I am sure there are more people playing RTW than STW and MTW, just people feel there isn't too much to ask about. Why? There is already the forum index, with good newbie's guide and everything that covers 90% of the questions. That's a few whole days of read-load! We didn't have this wonderful index before, so repeating questions appear in a much higher rate than now.

Also, users dislike hostile and/or pessimistic atomsphere, although they might enjoy watching some the short term.

Well at the speed I am playing I will have fun with Rome for a long Long LONG time as I have only played as the Romans currently.

As for the forums, it's better that way. It was insane when there were 10 post per minute, I didn't even bother to read them, now the ORG returns to meaningful discussions of the pre RTW summer.
