Question on traits

Do you guys know why do I have a 16 old family member who despises Carthagenians who have been extinguished 50 years ago?
Also how is it possible that my superior commander still has a doubtful courage vice. He came of age with it, but I built him up to be a good general. It'd make more sence if vices and vertues appear and disappear depending on what you do.

I think traits sometimes appear randomly. In a german campaign, two of my general got this "doubtful courage" trait although they've never routed and were always engaged in the battle.

Some VnVs are bugged or unlogical in vanilla. The Trivium Cherry Vanilla Pack fixes most VnV "bugs" and adds new VnVs.
In vanilla you get doubtful courage when the enemy retreats...
(it may be logical in a way: why did you need to attack with such a large force?)
I also have a family member who has issues with the extinct Carthagenians. Trying to immerse myself I reason that
a) he''s actually got doubtful courage "but if there were only some Carth. to fight, I'd be there!"
b) It's a family thing. His grandfather may have hated them even before they put his eyes out.

doubtful courage is easy to fix, use him in battle make some flank attacks kill some and it will go away, if you auto resolve it can be comon to get it otherwise its not

I never autoresolve. And it would be nice if it goes away, but I haven't observed such a thing. He is 38 now

when you use him in battle dont just use him to chase routers heh

I believe he was talking about situations when u have an overwhelmingly large force, we're talking 3:1 or even more. And the enemy just retreats, right away in campaign map without giving u any options to do anything at all. I think there is 1/10 chance that you'll get the doubtful courage trait that way.

It would be helpful if you bring some fast cavalry (your general is usually fine). As soon as you see they start to retreat, you can catch up from behind and charge into the back of some infantry. As long as you get enough kills, you won't get the doubtful courage triggered.

Thats because his mother kept leaving him in the care of a Carthegenian nurse made when he was young and her obnoxious daughter refused to let him play with her pigtails.

That might be because of the yellow stain that appears on his toga everytime he is forced to stand up for himself.

I just discovered that I misread the question. The character came of age long after the Carthaginians were exterminated. In that case, there are two possibilities: either he got it from his father, or he decided he hated the Carthaginians based on history lessons from before he was 16 (presumably). The former possibility is vastly more likely, assuming his father did either hate or fear Carthaginians:

As for Doubtful Courage, there's unfortunately no way to get rid of it (I think). The Coward trait inexplicably has a NoGoingBackLevel of 2, which is exactly the threshold of Doubtful Courage. Unless a NoGoingBackLevel does something unintuitive, that means you're stuck. Most NoGoingBackLevels are higher. If you want to raise the level, go to data\export_descr_character_traits.txt, search for "trait coward", and edit the line that says "NoGoingBackLevel 2." Setting it to 6 or 8 (Craven Coward and Ruled by Fear, respectively) would be more reasonable, or you could delete it altogether.

i had a great commander walk up to an army of macedon and attack it the army retreated without a fight and i get a stinking "doubtful courage" message come up.
I wasn't to happy with the macedonians after that
