Thread: All my allies betrayed me

Default All my allies betrayed me

Whats the point of having allies when they all betray you as soon as you are neighbour with them. I am playing as armenia and i made alliance with all my neighbour, for a while it was going well but then the selucids betray me and attack, that wasnt so bad because i had enough allies and i though i would be safe, but then as soon as i am about to defeat the selucids my alliy pontus attacks me. I didnt attack pontus for a while because i wanted to defeat selucids first, when i took antioch my other ally egypt attacks me on the next turn and takes antioch but as if thats not bad enough my other ally parthia attacks me. even though egypt was at war with selucids sience the start of the campaign they only attack me and not selucid.
This took all the fun away whats the point of having allies when they attack you anyway. One ally betrayng me wouldnt be as bad but all allies at once, c mon would you call that realism.
this can only be a bug and a really annoying one.
Is there any mod that fixes this problem

Alliances have always meant nothing in the TW Games.

Both in Shogun and Medieval Alliances were temporary and once you go too powerful the AI would go into "Total War" mode where it threw everything but the kitchen sink at you.

The same thing is true in Rome once you do too well the AI will strike at you with whatever it can find... Even if the attacking faction is puny in comparison to the defender who is a vast superpower.

The AI just hates the human player and never passes up on an opportunity to attack you.

This is not really evident in RTW, as it was in Medieval. The AI doesn't have the tendency to gang up on you anymore, save the romans (their gangup is dictated by their alliances, so that's a moot point.)

Playing a Seleucid campaign I had my long term allies the greeks attack. I was actually quite pleased because it was the first time I have ever seen the AI blockade one of my ports.

That just is not true, in my experience.

i agree with Slyspy, every time i reach "March on Rome" status, i get attacked by all my neighbors regardless of diplomatic relationship. which is annoying, but i personally think it would be too easy otherwise.

I was also unlucky and every time I engage in a war with a neighbour, the next turn I have ex allies armies crossing my borders and declaring war to me!!!
This happened playing with Gauls and Chartage.
I assumed the AI have demanded my allies to declare war on me and gave them an amount of money.
    but this should be improved.

Since the STW days I wonder, how come the AI don't attack each other at all, but just piling up huge enemies waiting for my coming. I think at least in RTW they do attack each other until I come - that's pretty satisfying already.

Somehow I found I am the arseh*le who always betray an AI alliance...

From my experience, AI factions are afraid of Romans when they maintain their initial alliance. AI factions constantly ask for Cease Fire when I play Romans, and most of the time, they WILL keep alliances until you attack first.

On the other hand, if you are non-Roman faction, AI will never be afraid of you even if you have 10 times the military strength. They will always seek war against you. This is my personal experience after playing all 3 Roman factions and 3 non-Roman ones.

Well i was pleased when the selucids attacked because i wanted to expand my empire it was quite fun with one enemy, but having to fight 4 enemies at once im not going to hold out for long, i dont even have a strong milatry and i just defeated pontus and lost my strongest army so my defeat is neaer with egypt declaring war.

I noticed that sarmatia never attacks me even though they are neutral and they have a strong army near artaxarta (my Capital), when parthia besieged my cvapital sarmatia attacked them and made them rout, its like they are defending me.
Is the diplomacy modable, if so someone has to fix this its the most annoyng thing i encountered in rome tghe bugs dont really bother me much but this i just hate it, as i said all my fun in playing as armenia is gone.

This is exactly what I mean, even when your empire straddles 40++ states and the plebs are begging you to march on Rome, the AI factions are still reluctant to band together and wail on you.

My Briton campaign was a serious example of AI ganging up.

it started off with the Gauls blockading one of my ports, then I proceeded to attack their territory.

My Allies the Germans soon attacked shortly after I got the upper hand against Gaul, as did the Romans, Spanish, Carthage and even Dacia sent a small force against me... Later on Numidia Blockaded my southern Gallic Ports for a Laugh.

I was really angry because I didn't ask for this, they just all piled in on me one after the other.

It all ended when the Brutii made me their protectorate and their Allaince network went against them and forced ceasefires on all fronts. In one move of a diplomat, peace had come to Western Europe... For a little while...

ive got the same problem with alliances but when i make an alliance with millitary access they dont attack unless i cancel the ally.

they break the alliance only when you have territorys they want(i think thats hardcoded or some reltaionships between some empires like carthage and rome or gauls and germans).

this is actually quite funny... complaining about your neighnours you are allied with..

I am absolutely sure, that when you are strong enough AND ready for it, you would turn on them to get those provinces too..

maybe they know you better then you know yourself... *s*

    ^ hes right =P

maybe offering to attack their enemies, buying map info, paying tribute helps extend the alliance?

In MTW you lost influence if you broke an alliance, and influence could be pretty important.

Presumably there's something similar in RTW.

In any case, it wouldn't be much of a game if the AI didn't treat the human player differently.

I find alliances are far more likely to hold in RTW. Just make sure your ally has easier routes of expansion, otherwise they will always attack you. Just like you would in their place. And if you fail to get strong alliances... try giving out large handfulls of cash as well. In my current greek game only the spanish wanted to ally with me. So I offered the seleucids 50k in cash to ally with me. You can guess how that turned out.

I don't know if it's just me... but has anyone found the Greeks more likely to be a good ally than other factions? They don't seem to expand as much as other factions, and seem happy to sit around getting rich, living in (relative) peace with neighbouring factions. I've had alliances hold out 50 years with Greece before, without a hint of aggression against me.
