the amazons can't be recruited as far as i know. they can only be fought against. if you look at your campaign map that came with the game, they can be found in themiskyra in hyperboria, and which can only be approached from the west.

and i don't know if you're aware of this or not, but in case you're not, mercenaries don't show up in cities in rtw. you have to have a general outside a city and if there are any available in the province, he can purchase them.

    Ok here goes,
Merc hoplites- can be recruited in a lot of places from southern italy and sicily to the crimea but they have an experience bonus in southern greece.
Also where ever you find merc hoplites you can find merc peltasts

    Illyrian merc's- Illyria and Dalmatia

Sarmatian and Scythian merc- in and close to the steppes of the east

Rhodian slingers and cretan archers- can be found in greece and western asia minor but have XP bonus on crete and rhodes

Arab cav merc's (all 3 kinds)- start in the arab deserts and palmyra and end in Egypt.

Numidian merc's- start in libya and continue for the rest of north africa.

Cilician pirates- Cilicia, syria, cappadocia, Lycia

Balearic slingers- sardinia, spain, africa (the province carthage is in) but they have a XP bonus on the balearic isles

Scutari merc's- non-celtic Iberia Balearic isles, maurtania

Barbarian merc's (includes cav.)- starting in celtiberia and galatia in the south they range all the way north to the british threw gaul and germany and dacia and the steppes.

Thracian and baestarne merc's- you can find thracian merc's in western asia minor macodonia and epirus and sometimes Illyria. I've only ever found baestarne merc around Byzantium and in thrace itself

Merc war elephants- anywhere there is an elephant resource you can find them but they are generateed very slowly the chance of them showing up is 0.35 every turn

Judean zealots- in Judea duh but they are even more rare than merc war elephants. I've only ever seen them once and then they were rebels against Egypt (me) they look like Numdian desert spearmen but there nearly as tough as spartan hoplites

If there are more than these I've never seen of heard of them.

Sometimes mercenaries joins rebels. In my current Carthage campaign I have quite a few rebels popping up in Iberia, so I send out my diplomat to calm them down. Part of them decide to join me and they are the good Balearic slingers! Now my Iberia army has 6 slingers.

I just saw some Bastarnae significantly farther North than that. Can't remember the name of the province, but it starts Rebel between southeast of Germania, Just North of Dacia.

Anyone know where there's a map?

There's a couple Camel mercs to be found down in the southeast corner of the map. Bedouin Archers and Bedouin Warriors.

Also, Spanish mercenaries, Barb Cav Mercs.

The "list" of mercs can be found under the folder RTW\Data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign. There's a text file named "descr_mercenaries.txt". It regulates which provinces can produce what mercenaries, their "regeneration rates" (ie. how fast new ones pop up), recruitement costs, and such interesting little details as how many exp chevrons they start out with etc. Mercenary Hoplites recruited in the province of Sparta have a whopping 3 chevrons to begin with, for example.

If you make up your own merc units (like I did by copy-pasting the Amazons appropriately), or for example want to get the Cheat Oliphants around, this is the file to tweak to get them to actually appear in the game too.

    ...
...you know, I just started wondering how crazy things would get if you made the Oliphants appear in, say, Mesopotamia and then played the Romans or someone similar... could be pretty interesting when you go East...
"Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. --- Proof of the existence of the FSM, if needed, can be found in the recent uptick of global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. Apparently His Pastaness is to be worshipped in full pirate regalia. The decline in worldwide pirate population over the past 200 years directly corresponds with the increase in global temperature. Here is a graph to illustrate the point."

I just fixed my last post to end confusion. Also the Scutarii mercenaries=spainish mercenaries.

They would be pretty nifty, and only some simple modding to get them! I also think that Nkaed Fanatics should be able to be recruited around the Gaulish territories as they seem to make up most of the rebel armies in northern italy and Gaul
