I suppose you mean walking on the red line? Yes it can happen sometimes. Yesterday I was flanked by half a unit of naked fanatics who went over the red line and stabbed my spear warband in the back. (I was camping at the corner)

No, I mean that the people outside the red line have differrent weapons. that is a single unit on the screen.
They changed whenever a soldier crossed the line.

Didn't they tell? Guess not. There is a secret armory outside the red line that allows your troops to exchange weapons. Haha.

Those short versions of the pikes that are also shown when greek pikemen are awaiting on the walls. They are a clever technique of fitting them in small spaces.

In this case though it's just a glitch.
