They completely muffle any sound caused by running or jumping on surface areas. Since the Trickster is on marble, it's impossible to get to him without one or two moss arrows. Moss arrows play a more dominant role in Thief 2: The Metal Age, because, naturally, everything's metal.

That level was scarier than Return to the Cathedral. Robbing The Cradle reminded me of The House On Haunted Hill (the remake).
