Indeed, There is some tragic sense of comedy in here...

Tragic in the sense that he is the "last of the Mohicans" doesn't even know it.

Comic in the sense that in the wider sense of things, either high above or down below, someone is laughing at the thougt of a new customer, as the odds of him actually making it through if he doesn't flee (which he can't) are very very slim.
