It's easy to come up with a motivation for a hero; he's got to save lives, protect the innocent, etc. That doesn't require imagination to roleplay, because it's how most people feel anyway. Villains are different. I don't believe in true evil, only in different motivations. People may act in vile manners, but they have complex backgrounds and reasons for acting the way they do. If you can figure out what those are, often their actions don't seem quite as bad. That's one of the reasons why my favorite fiction series of all time is the Song of Ice and Fire, by George R. R. Martin. His villains all have back stories that explain why they are the way they are. Once you learn them, you don't hate them as much as you used to and you can even sympathize with their positions and choices. Fascinating stuff, really. For me, evil is just more interesting.
You are waiting for A Dance with Dragons too?
