I was led to believe by the forum that when SMP finally did go live then the game would be switched to beta from its current alpha stage. I could be incorrect though.

Hmm... well, I suppose that could be correct if the game switched to beta pretty soon. I've been holding off on more minecraft for a few weeks now because I want to start over once SMP is available.

You're probably going to be waiting a while. Notch stated SMP is his priority, but I think he's realizing most people are in this for the single player and might be refocusing his work based on that. This is from what I've seen in the forums. The Halloween update was a real stinker too, he's still fixing bugs from that, and it lacks a lot of needed polish that should be there even in an alpha.
