Thread: History of Poland

    Thumbs up History of Poland

Some people have a tendency of dismissing Poland as a defeated nation, but that is wrong. Polish history has spanned over a thousand years and is rich with stories of great leaders and amazing battles. Polish spirit and toughness have always prevailed even against overwhelming odds. A four-part series entitled "Great Polish Warriors: The Winged Hussars" is my tribute to them. The Polish Winged Hussars were indeed the post powerful army in Europe.

I look forward to your comments.

The following video tries to summarize 1,000 years of Polish history in less than 10 minutes. Very informative as an introduction.

There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford

My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.

My only purpose here is to promote Polish history and encourage people to learn more about it. In the process, I invite the membership to respond with useful information of their own. Its a two-way street. Looking forward to constructive comments and information.

    Welcome to the Org, polishgreatness.

This forum has one or two rather, shall we say, "enthusiastic" Poles, which explains the responses you have received so far. An open-minded discussion on the history of Poland would be welcome though.

    Louis, it's all you.

Also the name polishgreatness invites many greatpolishjokes.

I'd rather hear about the third partition of Poland.

Reinvent the British and you get a global finance center, edible food and better service. Reinvent the French and you may just get more Germans.

This guy is too literate to be Krook.

On the topic, every nation's history is filled with stories of great leaders and amazing battles and how their spirit and toughness has helped them prevail against overwhelming odds.

Winged Hussars were not an army, they were a part of an army and they had their uses but many nations had military units more advanced and/or better trained than their neighbours at some point in history. Not much of an argument.

Beautiful Kraków. One of Europe's great cultural centres, for a thousand years. A centre of the rennaisance, of learning. A centre of devotion, endless churches and remarkable popes. Gorgeous city centre, that has radiated culture outwards thoughout a vast region.

I've been there twice. Once, an entire week. A great week well spend. Nice people, beer to rival the finest in Belgium and Germany, cuisine based on pork, which I ordered by the kilo in restaurants (yummie!). And imposing art, architecture and culture everywhere. Bliss.

    Post Re: History of Poland

One of the goals of the revolutionary army was the liberation of Poland from the clutches of the three autocratic empires.

The indomitable French legions fought their way through three empires to Warsaw, destroying all that stood before them. Their arrival meant the abolition of serfdom, the overthrow of the feudal system. The introduction of a neutral state and modern bureaucracy. Jewish emancipation. The export of the Napoleonic Code.

To this very day, Napoléon is remembered in the Polish national anthem.

The enemies of Poland are therefore declared an enemy of the Revolution, to be sentenced to death forthwith
