    They are very much favored in autocalc, and sometimes I just want to avoid a tedious siege assault battle...
    The art of war, then, is governed by five constant
    factors, to be taken into account in one's deliberations,
    when seeking to determine the conditions obtaining in the field.

    These are: (1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth;
    (4) The Commander; (5) Method and discipline.

    The most annoying thing about fighting Romans is the endless stacks of legionnaires you face if you play a faction that's not in a position to eliminate them early. I'm pretty sure Roman factions get a financial boost after the Marian reforms so you can leave one historical battle marker after another on the landscape, and look further up the road and see just as many stacks headed your way as you've just killed.

    Other than that, my cataphracts looove eating the boys in blue/green/red for lunch. Doesn't take very long to get exp 9 units!

    I hate Romans so much, before playing I will buff the other factions somewhat. My main thing is to give Eastern Infantry, Carthage/Spainish Town Militia and sometimes even Barbarian Warbands Phalanx formation... it helps a bit.

    I hate playing against the Romans. When I first unlocked Sparta I was like oh yay I have the coolest units in the game.

    About 4 hours later, after I had lay siege to many Dacian/Armenia cities, but was slowly being pushed back, the Romans pushed me back to F**KING ATHENS! Huge stacks of Roman soldiers.

    I play decently when im behind in RTW, but not when im constantly fighting huge armies (see my anger on the Huns in Barbarian Invasion) and taking casualties. I dont think my playstyle favors "Perfect" play, I.E I should win a battle against a large number of Huns/Romans and take no casualties. Indeed, in my typical battle, I could lose many units, but break the ranks completely of the enemy with my cavalry charges. Thus explains why fighting the Romans/Huns for me is a terrific challenge, they throw unending superstacks at my small, but typically experienced horde.

    I find things like that quite fun. I think the Romans are boring, but at least they're better than endless walking mummies that are about 500 years late.

    I'm writing a AAR about the Romans right now, but I'm honestly no fan of the Romans... XD Political intrigue and storytelling is my primary goal with that, as well and maybe learning a bit about a faction I don't really love...

    But the Romans... good lord. I just played what I thought was a equal battle of a Carthaginian army against a Roman one and good lord... I got a Heroic Victory with a hundred or so casualties, almost lost an entire unit of Iberian infantry, and constantly had to run my slingers and skirmishers out of the way of danger. It kept me very busy the whole battle. When I discovered it was a Heroic Victory I had to ask myself... was it? : O

    To make things more balanced out I mod my game as some other people had suggested. For one thing I give Libyan spearmen the phalanx formation, after all Hannibal's Libyan spears performed a phalanx, quite famously and effectively. But even with these spears phalanx capable the above mentioned chaos was what I experienced. Also... why on earth can Carthage not produce archers, but Spain and Numidia can? Carthage seemingly only employs archers on elephants... I wonder why CA had to handicap the already strained non-Roman factions...

    Currently I run two Rome.exe's One that is lightly modded to where I see it as more accurate, historical, and balanced. The other I am heavily modding in an effort to better balance out the factions and increase the versatility of the game. Eg. Adding archers to armies lacking them, adding spears, heavy-light infantry, etc. And with close attention being paid to historical accuracy. I think my Carthage and Greek Hellenic factions can stand up to Rome a lot more effectively.

    Although, I will say, when I played my first major campaign as Macedon... I had a blast fighting against the odds against those never ending Romans. I learned to laugh at the projected odds the battle suggested as I knew my phalanx and cavalry was capable of victory about... 20 victories ago. All of my generals became amazing generals... and I felt honest and terrifying anxiety about my invasion of Rome. Since peace was impossible only complete destruction of Rome would do, so my entire western Greek fleet and army were to invade Rome for the purpose of conquering it utterly. Also... my absolute best general was an all star 20-something Aloeus, a reincarnation of Alexander himself! Oh man... those are some good memories. : D

    That's a good reason. As well as the fact they're men of stone and iron and lies!
