    Smile Hurricane Sandy

Pardon if there's already a thread on this, but a quick search didn't turn anything up.

Sending lots of hope and love to my Brooklyn and NYC friends. It's strangely wrenching to see your old neighborhood underwater.

Building collapses, crane collapse, explosions, 50-house fires, seems like things went pretty hard in the five boroughs.

Also sending good thoughts to the Orgahs I know are in harm's way, such as @Gregoshi. (Let us know when you're dry and safe, brother.)

    Updates here, here, and here.

Watched some satalite images this morning that thing is huge. Good luck over there. Glad we don't have these here.

Damn.... That video, what the hell is exploding there?

    Edit, ah a plant

Yep, and saltwater is conductive, as the video demonstrates. Transformer station + saltwater = boom.

Sounds like all power's off in the area @Gregoshi calls home. Not kidding, let us know you're safe once you can do so.

I'm quite surprised, but Sandy was pretty much a non-event here (locally) even though it looks like (what was left of) the eye passed within 10-20 miles of us. A little water in the basement, but we get that during a heavy rain anyway. Lost power for about 20 seconds - a miracle because we lose power all the time in storms. I guess the trees in our area held strong against the wind gusts of Sandy.

I'm wondering if drone and TinCow faired worse in the DC area. drone hasn't been here since yesterday.

Glad to hear you're ok Gregoshi

Best wishes to all on the E. coast; need to catch up with my brother who had to hit Ohio and Washington. I doubt any flight would have been available for D.C. but I'd like to find out how he's whiling away the hours.

I have some friends who are in the areas it flooded worst. One lives in a two story house in a low lying area. First floor has two-three feet of water. Basement is completely flooded. Both of his cars are swamped, and one wont start anymore. Though he didnt lose power, interestingly enough.

Lost power about 10pm last night, they got it back on about 4pm today. No big issues, just a lot of rain and wind. I'm far enough away from water to have flooding, but I did lose to top of one of my trees.

It was a non-event out my way as well. We had a single power flicker and that was it. In my entire neighborhood (Vienna/Oakton) I saw only one tree down, and it was a small one. On the drive in this morning I saw three largish-trees down on Constitution, but pretty much nothing else. DC, at least central and areas west and south, appears to have been spared the bad stuff. Oddly, my parents lost power for 12 hours... and they live in Cleveland.

I rather like the idea of a generator being used to charge the neighborhood's cell phones.

I hear you're getting record seasonal temperatures as a prelude :) I hope the rain doesn't mix with snow when it hits; that always ends badly. Stay safe.

It's already mostly stopped raining, it rained hard for like an hour this morning. It's not even a bad storm wind was only 50 km/h, which is nothing. And it shifting between 5 C and 15 C at this time of year isn't odd, specially if it's a tropical storm rolling through.

Just got back to university, but for the past few days I've been without internet and power due to this storm.

So... it's good to be back, I guess. In Staten Island at least a large portion of the houses are still without power; my family's house lights came back on just a few hours after I left.

New York looks pretty bad in general. Trees were down everywhere, sometimes with live power lines at street level. If you go down to what used to be the marina there are boats and yachts just sitting on people's lawns. There are very few gas stations still running, and those that are open are packed with people trying to get gas for their cars or their backup generators.

The Manhattan subways were flooded, but I think that's about the worst they got. Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Long Island seem to have taken the most real damage.

Don't know much about the Jersey shore besides the fact that the boardwalk is gone and there's massive power outages as well.

On the bright side, power companies and the city gov. seem to be doing their utmost to get everything running again.

I seriously hope they have some fridges or a LAN party hooked up to that thing that we just can't see. Using a 15KW generator just to recharge cell phones is overkill and wastes a lot of gas.

I could stand to get a generator though. I'm on a well system, so when the power goes I lose water, so a small one to run the pump and the fridge would be nice.
