There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford
My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.
I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.
I think I get it.
Thank me, it's a courtesy.

Pretty true! Lots of people feel very restricted in such a role as there is a standard expected and they feel they have to be completely impartial all the time like some inhuman stoic individual. It is like a "trap" of responsibility. I like to think people can voice their opinions on matters on whatever they want, however responsibility should never interfere with opinion. As such, lets say we disagreed on a topic, I would do my best to ensure our clash on opinions does not interferes with duty, and if I felt that I am unable to do that, I would refer a duty situation to a third party.
So ultimately, I don't think moderators should be Socratics, but I do think they should be conscious of themselves.
[Well aware my name is Green and automatically skews the perception of my post because of that, but hey, I don't shy away from my opinion!]

The art of war, then, is governed by five constant
factors, to be taken into account in one's deliberations,
when seeking to determine the conditions obtaining in the field.
These are: (1) The Moral Law; (2) Heaven; (3) Earth;
(4) The Commander; (5) Method and discipline.
