So...I think the fixation on the issue stems from the fact that lots of uninformed people, to include journalists from major networks and publications, present "assault rifle" in a manner that it is the same as a "machine gun", not unlike the way you convince a nation that some low grade chemical weapons and possible nuclear material=a nuclear missle.
The fixation is about making sure peoples ducks are in a row and they are dealing with facts
