    Fragony, I think your English is failing you here.

    "Strong demands" /= "strong demand"

    Not even the Daily Mail is claiming that there are hordes of angry "beards" specifically telling Subway to nix the pork or else.

    In Russian, the word would be 'potrebleniya' for demand in the consumer sense, while in the sense you have in mind the word would be 'trebovania'.

    The fact that these two senses can have distinct respective words in one language shows that they are indeed not the same thing.

    Though I do admit that a better literal translation of 'potrebleniya' would be "consumption", the word basically corresponds to the Western concept of consumer demand.

    TLDR: Don't conflate (consumer) demand with a demand. Notice the difference the article makes.
