those are a lot of downloads, how many a day? that's the reason why the upkeep of the server is so frikin expensive?

No, not really. We don't host the EB installers on our server, only the torrent file and the other links where you can get it. Most of the capacity we use is a somewhat image-heavy web site. We also use it as an FTP server for sending files to eachother and SVN server to ease development of the mod, both of these cause bursts of high activity.
