Byrd was one of their "Kleagles" as I recall. Put him in the leadership committee for the state at the time. He has since repented of his youthful transgression against sense.

I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds.

—Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.

Not exactly. He is just an old old Democrat. They were the party of the KKK. Of course they seem to have developed a severe case of amnesia. They keep saying the Republicans are the party of Bigots…

He was just a party man. Blacks were not Democrats at the time. That didn’t happen until LBJ managed to get the Civil Rights Bill passed , with the help of the Republicans in Congress. Berry Goldwater was the prime mover for that one!

After defeating Goldwater in ‘64 he proposed and got passed his War on Poverty saying that “If we do this the Blacks (not the word he used, that one gets you banned) will be voting for us for the next hundred years.

In the next election the Democrats had a strong liberal wing! Something they had pretty much lacked up to that point. It won the nomination of McGovern. The south held their noses and voted for Nixon, not because they had become Republicans over night but because McGovern was seen as a mad man. The south was deeply conservative on almost all issues, and while Nixon was no conservative he was not seen as being so far left as McGovern was.

As the Republicans appealed more and more to conservative voters the Democrats began to reinvent themselves as the liberal party, and that boys and girls is where we are today…

They didn’t loose their bigotry they just channeled it for political expediency.
Most of the Social Programs have had the effect of destroying the Black family unit, something that was very strong prior to 1965.

Would vote a republican anyday over an ex KKK member....

Though with the whole swop over thing, wouldn't that mean the racists that did vote the democrats would be left with the republican party... lets not worry about that though... its much more fun only using the facts we like...

I think that is a mixed bag!

Most of the real racists I know or know of are yellow dog Democrats, surprisingly.

These people have hate more as a lifestyle and what you might see to be in their self interest may not be as obvious to them…

Don’t be confused! I don’t think any more highly of the Republican than I do of the Democrats. Party Leadership seldom goes where their constituents would most like to be…

Why do you think the American people are always voting for the lesser of two evils?

I am fully aware of all that. He still fits right in WV. Sometimes its not the party it's the state.

Which is funny, because West Virginia seceded from Virginia when the Civil War started to side with the Union. If I'm not mistaken, Byrd was actually at the Wheeling Conventions.

Supposedly, Byrd just experienced some discomfort and is now fine.

He probably just threw up in his mouth at the inauguration. I'm sure he will have many more years of getting things built and named for himself in his state.

Are you implying in stereotypical fashion that WV may be inbred and backward, and that that is why they keep electing the great senator Robert Byrd?

You don’t think it is because they have vision far and above that of the rest of us mere mortals?

Or is it the part about yellow dog Democrats?or that they could be bigots...

You possibly could be right, but…

I don’t know how them boyz is a’go’n a take to be’n called a’bunch’a’ignernt hillbillys by a Texacan!

Yes. Texans are the epitomie of culture and class. Never mix us up agian. Texas is probably the most diverse state in the union.

Because everyone in the north was an abolitionist coming into the south to free there beloved blacks from us ignorant ol'boys. The Yankees treated the Irish just as bad if not worse than the southerners treated the blacks.

    So harumph good sir

Not at all, they immediately gave them the right to keep and bear arms....popped them straight back onto a ship and sent them as replacements down to Gen Meagher. The REAL discrimination against the micks came AFTER they got home from a long couple of years trying to outfight Hood's Texans.
