That stinks I really want to play as the US in the main campaign and not just the road to independence.

You'll be able to. After you complete the Road to Independance campaign it continues into the normal campaign, with you playing as the US.

It may also be the case that you can play as the US if you are playing as Britian and they rebel against you.

Well I hope they rebel at the beginning of the campaign.
