Need to update my video drivers...

...but I have no idea how. Only two programs I found to do it automatically required me to pay, and I figure there's got to be a way to do it manually.

Okay, let's try this again...

I have an Nvidia Geforce 8200m g driver. Can anyone tell me, or give me some idea, how to get the latest drivers for it without killing my computer? I tried looking online once again but everything there scares me... I have no idea what is legitimate and what isn't.

Edit: I tried the manual route (after figuring that out) by checking for the latest drivers in the control panel, but it says they are up to date; thing is, this can't be the case because I have had display problems in a few games I tried playing. There have to be better drivers out there.

If you have an Nvidia card, the best place to look for updates is their website: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Leave the product type as GeForce, then select GeForce 8M series (Notebooks) as the Product Series, select your operating system and search and the latest ones will come up. However some manufactuers have their own drivers and the Nvidia ones aren't supported by them, so it would be good to know what the make and model of your laptop is, just to check it's ok

Now onto the second issue, newer driver releases don't always fix things and they can sometimes make things worse! It would also be helpful to know what sort of display problems you are having (just describe what happens on screen) and which games, as it's possible there may be other ways to fix the problem that don't involve messing with the drivers.

Well, I certainly don't want to take a to my comp if it costs $, which I am severely strapped for at the moment.

The specific problem is with draw distances at extreme range; specifically, it has to do with the game Battlefield Europe, which is kind of an MMORPG; more like an MMO war sinulation, but the problem is the fact that, over extreme draw distances, the vision goes all psychedeic, and all I get is crazy colors, eventually washing out to white. Every bit of advice I have gotten so far says to get new drivers.

Also, the easiest way to solve it is to reduce draw distance, but that severely limits what I can do ingame, including using binoculars/weapons scopes, because they instantly bleach out.

Just looked over the forums for that game and seems there are quite a few graphical glitches although none seem to be quite the same you are having, so it may be worth trying the new drivers (from the website I linked before). I'd create a system restore point before you do it though, so you can easily roll back the changes if something goes wrong or it makes things worse. Good luck
