It depends on the size of the forum, too. Maybe 50 members visit the Backroom regularly. I used to be a member of one much bigger Serbian forum that dealt with pretty much everything, from sports to social issues and politics. When you open a new thread there in the evening, by morning there's 150 replies. It's hard for both users and moderators to keep track of it and it goes OT extremely fast.

Also, this is primarily a game forum, so it's not the place people visit when they want a heated political discussion, unless they're already members of course.

The internet has educated me more about the working of politics and the world in general then every minute i have spent in education combined. The internet has also somewhat moderated my views and made me consider other possiblities more seriously...

I wouldn't say I hated anyone before but it has made me more understanding of different nations and why they and thier people act and vote like they do...

Not just forums. Go look at the discussion page on Wikipedia for any page related to the Great Northern War.
Or look at the comments on any pro/anti-Russian Youtube video.

Possibly the most amusing thing I have ever seen was a flamewar between a Russian and a Georgian in English. They didn't seem to have quite the vocabulary required to engage in a flamewar without swearing, but they were really trying.

Thumbs up Re: Internet forums have created hate amongst nationalities?

The best moderation is done by the posters themselves. In the end of the day the moderators don't like using warning points and some of the naughtiest posters we have a soft spot for if they are informed and/or funny most of the time.

It is fairly obvious that some posters bring out the worst and/or best in others and you can see tag teams of debate to tangos of death between some posters. As we can all see the same battles again and again. Logical when the topic is the same, a little tiresome when it is different topics.

I do think that communication is the key to a good family, friendship, business or any setting. Heck even a volleyball will do for conversation.

I think a lot of us agree on 80% of things and then fight like cats and dogs on 20%. Personally I prefer similies (in moderation and variety) to giving out even temporary warning points.
Our genes maybe in the basement but it does not stop us chosing our point of view from the top.

Nonsense! You really do underestimate your importance, Papewaio!

The mods are needed to build the foundation, after that's done, everything will go smoothly. Just look at any chaotic forum; none of them have anything even remotely connected to proper mods. Yes, after the foundation is built, things will go smoothly and we'll hardly notice you guys, except when you're pitching in your ideas in threads. But to say you're anything less important because of that is nonsense.

What's really fun though, is watching established media do one epic fail after the other when it comes to internet forums. I have yet to find a single one worth anything. Heck, there was even debate(in TV, papers, etc) after some neo-nazi was banned from Dagbladet's(our second largest national newspaper) forum, after some "rather interesting" debating techniques... It's alarming that the largest providers of free speech(the media) are complete retards when it comes to tackling free speech on the internet. Some people think that everyone getting the same "airtime" is what free speech means. Which is nonsense, all that leads to is chaos and anarchy. Free speech on the internet means that if you use your manners and actually think things over before and during your posting, you're free to post your opinion, whatever that may be. Free speech requires some degree of effort from the speaker.
Still maintain that crying on the pitch should warrant a 3 match ban

Unmoderated forums can work, as long as there is a good signal to noise ratio, and as long as effective filtering capabilities are available. Most good usenet newsgroups have a significant body of experienced and/or knowledgable posters, who know how the group works, and actively keep their group on-topic. Most decent newsreaders also have killfiles and scorefiles with which to filter out the noise, which can be configured to the user's taste. Whatever vBulletin may offer, it unfortunately doesn't offer the latter. I've been wondering whether web forums will ever agree on a common protocol a la NNTP, so that forumreaders can be developed that can read the forum's content, but present it to the user in the user's preferred form.

I think we've threaded a slippery path, Fragony. What works as humour for us, will inevitably go wrong. Better leave it.

But it's satire, they must understand it, it isn't all just vodka and potatoes you know.

I loves me a satirical bashfest. Oh bummer, you know I can't resist:

So a Welshman goes to America, has to spend the night: Sheepless in Seatlle.
