I guess it started with the quick french defeat 1940 against germany and the in anglosaxons country common believe that britain and amerika saved the french and the rest of the world from the nazis just by themselves...

That's possible. I also think it no coincidence that the joke resurfaced when France refused to participate in the invasion of Iraq. The French have this thing about militarism, but their performance in the last 130 years was unimpressive to say the least. But the joke is wrong about the cause. On many occasions the French army fought like demons. It was their leadership that let them down.

There are female members?

On the .Org? Frogbeastegg, Kekvit Irae and LadyAnn spring to mind. Frogbeastegg actually did a bit of research for EB in the very early days, but I am not aware of any current female team members.
