    Thanks. That shot is actually a close-up of the snow cover of a tree. Here's three more examples, first and last from the ground and the second at an extremity of a branch of some plant:

    I guess that the chrystals form in a combination of the short days and the reflective nature of the snow cover, making sure that they don't reach positive degrees C. They probably have a name.
