Deadliest Warrior

Samuri vs Viking was pretty silly. In real life the Viking would kneel behind his shield when the Samuri used his bow, and he'd have to face the Viking's spear in close quarters, not just as a thrown weapon (typically Northmen carried 3-4 "spears" into battle, or had their servant carry them).

Knight vs Pirate was also silly, the Knight didn't have a crossbow.

Did you ever see ThegnThrand's videos on YouTube? He spends a lot of time (probably too much) describing things like what you say.

Does anyone else notice that in every episode, there has to be at least one completely ridiculous weapon? The spit of poison and the ball and chain from the Shaka/Wallace episode come readily to mind...

And don't even get me started on the fact that they spent a quarter of the show touting Alexander's unarmed combat abilities and then had him lose to Atilla the moment he lost his sword.

THe best part of the show, though, is watching the pissing matches between the experts. The Spartan vs. Ninja one was pretty good in that regard.

It's actually a bit sad to see them get so emotional about it.

The whole thing is so absurd to me that it can't even be shallow entertainment.

They also totally underplayed the dicipline of Viking warriors (men who fought in the shieldwall.)

Speaking of which, if it's not too off-topic, I'd like to ask if you know any good books on Viking culture and warfare. I've asked this question many times, and am usually told to go read Osprey, and since you're an EB member you likely have a better grasp of history than the average person, even if this particular topic isn't your focus.

Actually most of japanese armies consisted of Ashigaru foot soldiers. Other then that the show only has entertainment value,nothing more nothing less.

The worst was the Shaolin Monk vs. Maori Warrior. What an insult to the Shaolin to even consider such a match. The Shaolin are so many miles above them in the skill level and sophistication of fighting and fighting techniques, and has weapons that were infinitely superior. It is like putting a US Marine against an unarmed 14 year old school girl...it is not even a fight, it is a slaughter.
I just don't understand why they cut the monk down so much in the show. (or why he was even on the show, him not being a warrior :P)

I mean, you're pitting one of the most psychotically brutal warriors in history (with a 2000 year technology advantage to boot) against a strategist with no record of ever having been in actual combat. Mark my words, it's going to be the most lopsided episode they've ever done.

Books on any period in history are necessarily populist. Most actually good work is in journal articles, but if you don't have a university library that doesn't help.

Generally, avoid osprey and anything written before about 1995, as Victorian mythos did not begin to shift before then. It's actually the publisher you need to look at, Universitry Press books, D.S. Brewer, Blackwell. Names like that.

Ronin were Ronin, not Samurai, that's a contradiction in terms. As to the status of Samurai generally, it depends on the period, but generally Samurai are proffesional soldiers, while the Viking they depicted was more of the level of an itinerant raider.

A Robin is a debased samurai like a hedge Knight. Then they should have used like a thegn versus a daimyo to be precise and yeah I guess they were like professional soldiers but in many cases they didn't even have horses or the archetypes armor

Off topic slightly: I'm looking for a respectable book on the history of modern Vietnam (1600 onwards-ish), but I can't find anything on Amazon. Do you have any ideas?

Many Samurai went podgy and fat towards the end of the Edo period, particularly in Edo itself.

Rawr, indeed it was. But I suspect neither were fighting at their full potential (otherwise the world could've been destroyed).
Nonetheless, I'd say an old Chuck Norris with hair migrated from his chest to his chin VS the Ghost of Bruce Lee would be an interesting matchup.
