MTW Leader Attributes

Every unit has a leader, from the lowliest peasant unit up to the King with his bodyguard. The unit leaders all have attribute ratings that affect their performance both on the battlefield and as potential governors.

Loyalty

A unit leader's loyalty rating indicates how loyal he is to the faction leader. Low loyalty leaders are more likely to join in a revolt against the faction leader, and are more easily bribed. For unit leaders with low command rating, this is not that much of a problem, but when the higher level commanders start getting disloyal, the faction has a problem.

The loyalty of the general with the highest command rating in a stack determines the loyalty of the whole stack. Low loyalty generals should not be given command of large and powerful stacks. They should be either kept separate, or added to the faction leader's stack, which will both increase their loyalty and eliminate the possibility of treason.

A general's loyalty can be improved by proximity to the faction leader, marriage to a princess, an increase in the faction leader's influence, or the bestowal of titles.

Piety

The piety rating shows how committed the unit leader is to the faction's religion. For a general, this attribute does not have that much of an effect, but a low piety rating in a Catholic general does make him susceptible to inquisitions. For a governor, his piety rating can affect the happiness level of his province. If the governor has a high piety, and the province does not match the faction's religion, the people will not be happy. (do piety and province zeal affect happiness?)

For unit leaders of Catholic factions, the crosses indicating piety rating will be broken if the faction leader has been excommunicated. (does excommunication lower the loyalty of high piety leaders?).

Dread

A leader's dread rating has no effect unless the leader is a provincial governor. A high dread rating increases the happiness (or rather, reduces the chance of revolt) in the province. Dread has no effect in combat.

Command

The command rating determines the combat leadership capability of the unit leader. Control of a troop stack is given to the unit leader with the highest command rating, and generalship of a battle always goes to the unit leader with the highest command value. The only exception is the presence of the faction leader, he will always command a stack or battle if present.

Command rating of the general is very important in combat. For every second star of command, units in a battle get +1 to both attack and defence. Units also get +1 to morale per second command star, unless they are within 50 meters of the general, in which case they get +1 per star.

Acumen

Acumen affects a governor's ability to manage his province's wealth properly. A high acumen will generate more money than normal from the province's farms and trade. Leaders chosen to be provincial governors should have at least an acumen level of 3, with 4 or higher being preferred. The governor increases the income by 10% per feather of acumen. The faction leader's acumen also affects income across his entire realm, giving +2% income per feather of acumen.

Influence

Only the faction leader has the Influence attribute (this replaces Loyalty). A leader with high influence is very important for the health of the faction. The influence rating affects diplomatic efforts abroad, and well as the loyalty of provinces and generals domestically. A low influence can cause unrest, and even civil wars.

  • Losing two provinces, -1 influence
  • Capturing two provinces, +1 influence
  • Losing a crusade/jihad, -2 influence
  • Successful crusade/jihad, +1 influence
  • Relieving the siege on an ally, +1 influence
  • Attacking an ally, -1 influence

Vices and Virtues

A unit leader may or may not have any vices and/or virtues. These are picked up randomly, or by some action or inaction on the part of the leader, his unit, or his province (if a governor). Vices and virtues can affect a leader's attribute levels, or his ability to govern a province or command a battle. Once a unit leader picks up a vice or virtue, he becomes an unique character and it will not be possible to merge his unit completely into another, since he will always remain.
